Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss this anthology that presents widely varied mystery and suspense tales. They are quite well read and will hold the attention of mystery lovers and curious listeners. Jane Oppenheimer's intimate and expressive narration of Abby Geni's “The Body Farm” tells a story of justifiable homicide. Nicole Lewis captures the multiple voices, quick pulse, and meta quality of Alyssa Cole's “Just a Girl”, while John Pirhalla performs Nate Kolakowski's “Scorpions,” an ironic story, with verve and subtlety. In this episode of the Fully-Booked podcast, the hosts, Meaghan and Arthur, delve into a new chapter of the podcast. The audience is informed about Shirin's temporary departure due to her pregnancy as Shirin steps away to focus on her growing family, Arthur, co-producer of the Fully-Booked podcast, steps in to co-host alongside Meaghan. This change, while temporary, marks a significant shift in the dynamic of the show. Arthur’s background in coding and his technical contributions to the website bring a fresh perspective to the podcast. The hosts humorously discuss his 60% familiarity with the topics they’ll cover and joke about potential jousting matches for hosting rights when Shirin returns. Despite the change, the team is optimistic about the new direction and is ready to embrace 2025 with fresh content and themes. Kicking Off 2025: A Sci-Fi Focus As the podcast launches into the new year, Meaghan and Arthur introduce a month-long exploration of science fiction. This is a notable shift, as Meaghan admits that she and Shirin have historically read very little of the genre. However, Arthur’s passion for sci-fi provides the perfect opportunity to delve into its rich and diverse discussions. The hosts acknowledge the challenges they faced in planning sci-fi content in the past. With Arthur’s enthusiasm, planning the month’s content was surprisingly straightforward. The podcast promises to cover various aspects of sci-fi, including genre mashups, successful and unsuccessful adaptations, and newer releases. This thematic focus aims to appeal to long-time sci-fi enthusiasts and newcomers alike. Sci-Fi Genre Mashups: Exploring New Horizons One of the main themes of the episode is the exploration of sci-fi genre mashups. Meaghan and Arthur discuss how sci-fi often blends seamlessly with other genres, creating unique storytelling opportunities. They highlight several examples: Sci-Fi and Mystery: The Midsolar Murders series by Mur Lafferty combines amateur sleuthing with extraterrestrial settings. Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter and Wayward Pines series mix speculative fiction with gripping mysteries. Michael Crichton’s The Andromeda Strain explores a medical mystery linked to a satellite crash, blending suspense with scientific intrigue. Sci-Fi and Horror: The hosts delve into the subgenre of sci-fi horror, highlighting works like Caitlin Starling’s The Luminous Dead and David Wellington’s Red Space series (Paradise-1, Revenant X). They also discuss the historical roots of the genre, referencing classics like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend. Sci-Fi and Fantasy: Works like Christopher Paolini’s To Sleep in a Sea of Stars and Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series exemplify the blend of futuristic technology and fantastical elements. Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth series introduces necromancy into a science fiction setting, creating a unique narrative style. Sci-Fi and Historical Fiction: Stephen King’s 11/22/63 combines time travel with the historical backdrop of the Kennedy assassination. Philip K. Dick’s The Man in the High Castle explores an alternate history where the Axis powers won World War II. Sci-Fi and Romance: Meaghan and Arthur touch on the lighter side of sci-fi with titles like Alyssa Cole’s The AI Who Loved Me, which combines AI with human connections, and Ruby Dixon’s monster romance series. Sci-Fi in Other Media: Adaptations and Recommendations The hosts transition into discussing sci-fi in other media, particularly film and television. They reference the ongoing Silo series and compare its dystopian elements to works like Blake Crouch’s Wayward Pines. Meaghan shares her thoughts on the Alien film franchise, admitting she’s new to many of its sequels. The pair humorously critique the series’ ups and downs, including the divisive Prometheus prequels. The episode also touches on notable sci-fi adaptations and their impact: Dark Matter by Blake Crouch was recently adapted into a TV series. Man in the High Castle adapted for Amazon Prime. The Apollo Murders by Chris Hadfield blends Cold War intrigue with space exploration. The hosts express excitement about revisiting sci-fi classics and exploring lesser-known gems. They encourage listeners to explore Fully Booked’s website for related articles and reviews from contributors. Looking Ahead with Enthusiasm As the episode concludes, Meaghan and Arthur emphasize the importance of embracing new experiences. They acknowledge that while the month of sci-fi exploration is a departure from their usual fare, it presents an opportunity for growth and discovery. The duo encourages listeners to join them on this journey, whether through reading, watching, or engaging with the content on their website and social media platforms. The hosts’ banter, combined with their genuine curiosity and enthusiasm, sets the tone for an exciting year ahead. With a mix of humor, insight, and personal anecdotes, the episode invites listeners to explore the vast possibilities of sci-fi and its many intersections with other genres. Given the hot weather -- and the depressing politics -- you may be looking for an easy "beach read" for the beach, or maybe just the break room or bedroom. Laurie Dreyer, manager of Troy Public Library's Lansingburgh branch, has five suggestions, in various settings. The first four she heard of from the website blackgirlnerds.com: "Summer on the Bluffs" (Sunny Hostin, 2021, on Martha's Vineyard); "Drunk on Love" (Jasmine Guillory, 2022, in a Napa Valley winery); "Honey and Spice" (Bolu Babalola, 2022 in a radio program!); and "The Accidental Pinup" (Danielle Jackson, 2022, in a photography studio). The fifth one is a thriller: "When No One Is Watching" (Alyssa Cole, 2020, in a Brooklyn neighborhood). For more details, stop by the Lansingburg branch at 27 114th St., or visit www.thetroylibrary.org. To find other libraries in New York State, see https://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/libs/#Find.

When No One is Watching is a thriller written by Alyssa Cole which is a gem that I luckily stumbled upon via the Apple Book app. The book was published September 1st of 2020 and went on to becoming a New York Times best seller. When No One is Watching follows Sydney Green as she has just moved back to her hometown of Brooklyn. As soon as she gets back she notices how the neighborhood is changing and the neighbors she has known her entire life start to vanish overnight...literally. A lot can happen in a week and this book proves that. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ibn87dc/message

Hello friends,Stephanie Shonekan is an author and musicologist who has worked with the BBC, public radio and written and taught extensively on music, from soul music, to country music, and Nigerian and African-American hip hop. Shonekan serves as the dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Maryland, and we have created a podcast together, Cover Story with Stephanie Shonekan, at the University of Missouri and NPR-affiliate KBIA. Cover Story is all about life, history, love, identity, and music - through our culture's favorite songs. And that is also what Stephanie Shonekan's work is about. So: We talked about reading Jane Austen while growing up and going to college in Nigeria - and how the stories of Austen might play for young readers in Nigeria growing up and growing into life and literature. Again, it's all about: culture, identity, love, and the stories we tell. In this conversation, Shonekan talks about the fact that in Nigeria as a colonial and post-colonial country, she was introduced to characters and stories that did not reflect her family, her friends, and herself - and that was both an awakening of sorts, and also a painful thing to discover. Her answer? To go and find the authors and the classic literature of Nigeria, her home country. Enter: Classic writers like : Chimimanda Adichie, Buchi Emecheta, Wole Solinka, and Chinua Achebe. And she asks a very simple but powerful question: Why weren't these writers introduced to her as part of her education? Why did she have to go and discover them for herself? This is a question about the canon of classic literature - and how something that can bring transformation and joy, like classic literature, can also, and has been, used to disseminate power, nationalism and empire, and can be deployed to erase culture and identity.Dean Stephanie Shonekan, in this episode, talks with us about discovering the stories of Jane Austen, and then discovering stories of her own. And then, finally, circling back to come to terms with the stories of Jane Austen. And also: Bridgerton. Because in any conversation about romance, race, and the stories we tell, we have to talk about Bridgerton, right?!Enjoy this excerpt of our conversation: Links and Community* The Woman of Colour: A Tale is a Regency story chronicling the life, love and adventure of a Black heiress, Olivia Fairchild, who travels from a Jamaican plantation to 19th century England to marry. Here's a wonderful edition from Broadview Press published in 2007 with historical notes by Professor Lyndon Dominique. Some teachers are including this book alongside Austen, an inclusion that would seem to direct address the canon of literary works and what gets taught - let us know if you are doing that and how it went for your class. * Stephanie Shonekan references some Nigerian classics, including: Chimimanda Adichie, Buchi Emecheta, Wole Solinka, Chinua Achebe, * Patricia Matthew is a well-known author and professor whom many of you in this community know and love. Professor Matthew has written about her complicated feelings about reading Jane Austen, with “On Teaching, but not Loving, Jane Austen,” and on Bridgerton here, and on how she embraced her inner Emma - who can relate?! * Here's Chimimanda Adichie's talk on The Power of Story - that is referenced in this conversation* We also talked about the writing of Alyssa Cole and her historic and contemporary romance fiction. Here's the Loyal League series featuring romances set in the Civil War among a network of Black spies working to overturn the Confederacy, which looks absolutely amazing. Sometimes we need a promised happily ever after. Sanjana Basker talks about the value of joy, feminism, and sexual empowerment in romance books. Romance books are about love, community, and connection, some things often undervalued in society today. Sanjana and I dive deep into all the reasons we love these books and the community surrounding them. Like romance books themselves, while not all of the episode is about sex, it is part of it. We go into a deeply academic conversation about sex at around minute 42, so if that's not something you enjoy, you may want to skip to minute 58. Summary: Take a bite out of the Big Apple with Holly and Devin today! They peel back the layers of New York City with books that focus on Harlem and Park Slope, Brooklyn. Holly and Devin both lived in the city (Devin for 2 years, Holly for 20) so it holds a special place in their hearts. That being said, stories set in the city can be over-romanticized and a lazy choice and the books they appreciate most have a true, granular sense of place and don't just center around Times Square. Topics Discussed: The Heart (2:26): Devin discussed Real Men Knit by Kwana Jackson, a book that starts right after the death of Mama Joy, the adoptive mother of 4 grown men and the lynchpin of their Harlem community. She ran a knitting store for decades, and after her untimely passing the family and community are left to pick up the pieces and figure out who they are without her. Devin's key takeaways were: Kerry Fuller and Jesse Strong, the central couple of the book, are deeply connected to Mama Joy and the shop specifically, but their dynamic for most of the book feels more brother-sister than the tension you'd hope for from a friends to lovers romance. Jesse has 3 brothers (Noah, Lucas, and Damien) who act as foils for Jesse's immaturity and propensity to ignore responsibility for the sake of sleeping with more women; they also want to close the shop which acts as the central driver for Jesse and the book's plot. Overall, this book felt more like a family and community story than it did a romance. There was a deep sense of place and connection to Harlem throughout, but the book got a steaminess rating of 2. The Dagger (15:38): Holly discussed A Good Marriage by Kimberly McCreight, a thrilling romp that unpacks the torrid affairs and pulse-quickening drama of the wealthy Park Slope elites. NYC criminal defense attorney Lizzie receives a call from Rikers Prison - her friend from college, Zach Grayson, is in prison after his wife is found dead at the bottom of the stairs of their Brooklyn brownstone. Her key takeaways were: The book oscillates between Lizzie's first-hand account of figuring out what really happened, the wife Amanda's diary in the days leading up to her death, and Grand Jury testimony transcripts; this serves to heighten intrigue and give the reader lots of puzzle pieces to fit together. While the book doesn't criticize gentrification directly, there is definite shade thrown at the bougie Park Slope mom's and the elite culture (including a partner-swapping sex party!) While the book had a few red herrings that felt like a stretch, Holly still rated this book very highly and recommends the book especially on audio. Holly also wanted to recommend When No One is Watching by Alyssa Cole as a good accompaniment to A Good Marriage. Hot On the Shelf (34:17): Holly: Kismet by Amina Akhtar Devin: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus What's Making Our Hearts Race (39:25): Holly: Watching Showgirls at Cinespia, Cemetery Films Devin: American Rescue Dog Show on ABC/Hulu Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

WHEW WE HAD A LOT TO SAY. This week, we're discussing lesbian romance novels and, unfortunately, why we just don't like a lot of the ones we've read. Amelia discusses gender exploration and lesbian relationships with gay men. Sarah laments the lack of butches and why Regency era women should be allowed to do rampant infidelity. We both spend a long, long time trying to figure out why the sex is so boring. Afterwards when Sarah was editing the episode, Amelia asked her to try to make us not sound like evil dark sex perverts. This feat that proved to be absolutely impossible. Media discussed: Olivia Waite's Feminine Pursuits series which includesThe Lady's Guide to Celestial MechanicsThe Care and Feeding of Waspish WidowsThe Hellion's WaltzThe Perks of Loving a Wallflower by Erica Ridley A Proper English by KJ Charles The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky ChambersGideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir The Unspoken Name by A.K. Since I spoke pretty disparagingly of contemporary lesbian romance in this, I wanted to clarify that while I still didn't connect with the central romance of this book, I enjoyed reading the story overall and would recommend it to people looking for a modern twist on a princess-bodyguard story starring two Black woman, a fictional country, a critique of the idea of monarchy while still enjoying some of the trappings, and a fun cast of main and side characters.
