Love, Pain, Grief, and Learning How to Overcome with Cat PartheniadesOn this week's episode, Yuliana welcomes Catherine ‘Cat' Partheniades to the show to talk about the moment she found out she was adopted. She was 30 when this happened, and shortly after this discovery, both of her adoptive parents passed away. Today she chats with Yuliana about reckoning with her parents' lies, experiencing resentment, and her intense periods of drinking to repress the emotions she didn't know how to deal with or even want to deal with. It was only upon finding her biological family that she found solace in her identity and her parents' decision to withhold information from her. After coming into contact with her birth mother through Facebook, Cat remembers meeting her in Brazil as a blissful moment where she finally found the missing piece that she hadn't quite been able to place in her life before. Kim and our guest go on to talk about both Cat's birth and adoptive parents, and the pair close out the episode by talking about her experience healing from grief and complex emotions. It's certainly been an interesting ride for Cat Partheniades, but, as you will hear, she doesn't want this narrative to dominate her life. After all, she is so much more than that.Episode Highlights:Cat finding out she was adopted at 30 Her parents' liesExperiencing resentment toward her parents Setting pain asideFeeling like she's betraying her parents Finding her biological family through FacebookThe quest for Charlotte's birth momReunification with Charlotte's biological familyCharlotte's coming outIdentity strugglesHealing from griefEd Sheeran's PhotographQuotes:“Facing the health challenges of both her parents, she finds out that she's adopted, even amid the pain of losing her parents and this life altering discovery, she finds a way toward acceptance of her life and more importantly, herself.”“I did get into contact with my biological family, and at that point in time, I finally felt that I was at home with myself— with the universe in a sense - because when I met my biological family, that's where I belong, in a sense. What's love got to do with it? No pain no gain is that true? My journeys in love and pain have been an experience. I have fallen in love. Only to realize that I wasn't really in love. I have been a luat before too, that was short lived. I have confused, love for sex and sex for love in my past. Pain has always found its way to me. I believe it has a lot to do with how I was brought up and raised. Not so much the handling of me, but what I was exposed to. They say you are what you consume. So if I grew up consuming a lot of anger and negative energy, then there would be a chance that these types of influences could show themselves later on in my life. Now at the time of course I wasn't thinking like this. Now, in my more mature years, I understand that there is a possibility to have love without pain. There's a chance I have pain with no love. I've been able to learn so much through my marriage because of how kind and warm hearted my wife is. She has shown me how to be patient and that it is worth while. You don't have to be what you have consumed over your lifetime. You have a choice the same way I have a choice. I choose love with no pain. I know you have many choices in the podcast world so thank you so much for being here with me today. I appreciate you, your time and energy. John Caudwell – Love, pain and money...with TRE's Giles Brown
It was at a car auction in 1987, the height of Mrs. Thatcher's booming Britain, that he spotted the future. A mobile phone came in an unwieldy suitcase. Within two decades John Caudwell sold his Phones 4u business for £1.46 billion. John's life story retraces the inspirational journey, from the very shaky beginnings of his phone empire to owning yachts, private planes, a fleet of topflight cars, a Jacobean mansion in the Midlands, and London's most expensive home (featured in a Channel 4 documentary). It's a fascinating insight into the drive, ambition, focus, and vision required to become a billionaire. Born in a terraced house in Stoke-on-Trent, Caudwell went from bullied child to self-made billionaire, befriending Sir Elton John, Eva Longoria, Hugh Grant, and Robbie Williams, who have all taken part in his charity balls to raise money for Caudwell Children. In this episode, John Caudwell talks with Adam Stott about his new book Love, Pain, and Money, his successful charity work, and his journey to becoming a Billionaire. John shares his battles with endless career misfortunes and overcoming a series of personal tragedies to become a successful businessman and philanthropist. Listen to learn more!

"Guesses, of course, only guesses. If they are not true, something better will be." At the end of his life, Lewis wrote Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer. Lewis's thoughts on heaven and the resurrection were, perhaps ironically, published posthumously. In this fifth installment of "Love, Pain, Grief, and Joy," Drs. Crystal and David C. Downing, along with Producer Aaron Hill, explore the second half of this often overlooked book including the problem of spiritual and theological bigotry, the importance of the incarnation and resurrection, Lewis's views on communion and the inspiration of Scripture, and why Lewis believed that "Creation [is] delegation through and through."
"Creation seems to be delegation through and through. He will do nothing simply of Himself which can be done by creatures." Those words were written by C.S. Lewis in Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer at the end of his life and published posthumously. In this fifth installment of "Love, Pain, Grief, and Joy," Drs. Crystal and David C. Downing, along with Producer Aaron Hill, explore this often overlooked book by Lewis. How did Joy's death inspire Lewis to write this book? How and why should it be read in conjunction with A Grief Observed? And how does this book that is "chiefly on prayer" still manage to touch on broader theological topics such as joy, embodiment, resurrection, determinism, free will, organized religion, and the impassibility of God.
"What reason have we, except our own desperate wishes, to believe that God is ... 'good'?" Phrases such as these in A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis have caused many fans and critics to assume that Lewis lost his faith after the death of his wife, Joy Davidman Lewis. In this fourth installment of "Love, Pain, and Grief," Drs. Crystal and David C. Downing, along with Producer Aaron Hill, explore the context and questions surrounding one of Lewis's most practical and yet misunderstood books. What is the role of faith in the grieving process of Christians? In what way is reality, God, and the memory of lost loved ones iconoclastic? And is that a good thing?
“To enter heaven is to become more human than you ever succeeded in being on earth; to enter hell, is to be banished from humanity.” This week, in our third installment of "Love, Pain, and Grief," we continue our discussion of The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis with Dr. Jerry Root. Drs. Crystal and David C. Downing, along with Dr. Root and and Producer Aaron Hill explore questions such as: Why does Hell exist? Who will end up there and why? Is it fair or compassionate to doom people to Hell? What will heaven be like? And do all dogs go to heaven? Or only the dogs of believers?

“We can ignore even pleasure. But pain insists upon being attended to." Dr. Jerry Root, scholar and close friend of the podcast, is back again for our second installment of "Love, Pain, and Grief." This week hosts Drs. Crystal and David C. Downing, along with Dr. Root and and Producer Aaron Hill explore The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis. Because all humans wrestle with questions about human and animal pain, suffering, evil, natural disasters, hell, heaven, and the nature of God, Lewis's immensely profound and quotable book will resonate with atheists, agnostics, and even exvangelicals deconstructing their faith.
Over the course of his life, C.S. Lewis wrote several books addressing the most complex and universal human experiences—love, pain, and grief. In this week's episode, Drs. Crystal and David C. Downing sit down with scholar and close friend of the podcast, Dr. Jerry Root, to discuss The Four Loves (1960) by C.S. Lewis. How does Lewis define philia, storge, eros, and agape? Are his definitions accurate? What is the difference between Gift-love and Need-love? Is Need-love bad? How can love be corrupted? Do earthly loves distract from love for God?
King starting the independent record label JAY Records to release the Timex Social Club hit ‘Rumors' and ushered in the biggest selling single of 1986 (3.5 million copies) and becoming the #1 R&B single on the Billboard Charts. With a Top 10 single on the Billboard Pop charts for over 56 weeks, King watched his life change as his music became an unprecedented hit. What he'd produced was history-making, as nobody had before taken an R&B song from an indie label to such heights. Such moves from a 24 year old entrepreneur made the year 1986 even more memorable, as he quickly followed up with a label/production deal with Warner Brother Records and his King Jay Records label, subsequently releasing the first Club Nouveau single ‘Jealousy' and the album, ‘Life, Love & Pain'. After ‘Jealousy' went to #8 on the Billboard R&B charts in September of 1986, followed by ‘Situation #9' (#4 Billboard R&B charts), 1987 came in with an even bigger bang when ‘Lean On Me' was released in February and became #1 Billboard Pop/#2 Billboard R&B platinum single, winning a Grammy for R&B Song of The Year #TimexSocialClub #ClubNouveau #MusicIndustry #rnb #rnbpodcast #rnbmusic #newjackswing #hiphop #hiphopmusic #DJCassidy #PassTheMic #HalftimeChat

Twin flames y'all... intense love and intense pain in the same relationship. Benjy Sherer uses his own twin flame journey to walk us through an immense amount of information about twin flames in this episode, including: • Benjy's personal twin flame story • What is a twin flame? • Does it have to be romantic or could it be friends? • The twin flame energy frequency • The Runner/Chaser dynamic • Growing through the trauma of a twin flame relationship • What the twin flame journey teaches us • Divine Masculine & Divine Feminine involved in a twin flame relationship (NOT about gender) • What can you be doing if you're separated from your twin flame? • Should we even be focusing on twin flames? OUR GUEST There is a fine line between emotional awareness and spiritual awakening, and that is where Benjy Sherer thrives as a mentor and teacher. Guiding people to emotional mastery, Benjy bridges the gaps between psychology, spirituality and philosophy. Those 3 realms are all intrinsically connected in Benjy's completely unique - and yet intuitively and compellingly simple - approach to self love and emotional mastery. Growing up with a deep existential need for answers, Benjy's academic background was in Philosophy and World Religions, but that academic search left him pessimistic at the soul level about our ultimate role in this universe and the purpose of life. It wasn't until after a dark night of the soul and a spiritual awakening of his own that he was forced to dive more deeply into his own inner healing, in order to rediscover his true purpose and learn the skills, tools, and techniques that he teaches to clients today. His overall approach is about “Feelings First”, referring to the notion that we can master our emotions directly, without the need for deep intellectual analysis, ultra-spiritual practices, or pharmaceutical medications. He teaches people how to connect directly with the emotions and sensations of their body - without fear, guilt or shame - and to allow these feelings to run through them so that they can be truly released. It's about building emotional muscle, not seeking rational answers. As he says, emotional healing is NOT an intellectual activity. www.benjysherercoaching.com https://www.facebook.com/groups/futuremakersunited Purchase Benjy's book, Feelings First Shadow Work: A Simple Approach to Self Love and Emotional Mastery available on Amazon or at BenjyShererCoaching.com/FFBook CONTACT MELA www.podpage.com/belle-book-candle FB & IG @bellebookcandlesc YT: Belle, Book & Candle Support by becoming a patron: www.patreon.com/bellebookcandle Or, buy Mela a coffee! www.buymeacoffee.com/bellebookcandle Interested in our upcoming Greenwild Festival on November 13, 2021? This episode I discuss our sense of pain and pleasure: where and how they each arise in our mind and body and various ways to control their intensity. I discuss the science of behavioral tools like acupuncture and hypnosis and directed pressure, including the neural circuits they each activate to modulate our experience of pain or pleasure. I also discuss whole body pain, pain "syndromes" and novel pain relief compounds such as Acetyl-L-Carnitine, SAMe and Agmatine. I discuss neuroplasticity of the pain system and the key role that visual perception plays in pain modulation. Finally, I address the link between dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin, with arousal, pleasure and pain. As always, both basic science and various protocols are described. Note: The description of the dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) was intentionally simplified and does not include mention of dorsal horn spinal relay neurons, etc. For an excellent full text review of this anatomy and circuits for touch sensing, please see: https://bit.ly/3jH9CPf Thank you to our sponsors: InsideTracker - https://www.insidetracker.com/huberman Helix Sleep - https://www.helixsleep.com/huberman Athletic Greens - https://www.athleticgreens.com/huberman Our Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/andrewhuberman Supplements from Thorne: http://www.thorne.com/u/huberman Social: Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/hubermanlab Twitter - https://twitter.com/hubermanlab Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/hubermanlab Website - https://hubermanlab.com Join the Neural Network - https://hubermanlab.com/neural-network Links: Instagram discussion with Dr. Sean Mackey, MD, PhD - https://www.instagram.com/p/CMVq0X8Bk1D/ Agmatine study - https://bit.ly/3CtTwRn Mechanistic basis of acupuncture - https://bit.ly/2VHi0pz Timestamps: 00:00:00 Skin, Pain, Pleasure 00:01:50 Protocol 1: Maximizing Motivation (with Dopamine & Pleasure) 00:07:12 Sponsors: InsideTracker, Helix Sleep, Athletic Greens 00:12:04 Pleasure & Pain, & Skin Sensors 00:18:13 Sensing Touch with Your Brain: Magnification of Feet, Hands, Lips, Face, Genitals 00:22:16 Two-Point Discrimination, Dermatomes 00:28:11 Thoughts & Genes That Make Physical Pain Worse 00:33:45 Expectations, Anxiety, & Pain Threshold 00:40:27 Protocol 2: Cold Sensing Is Relative; Getting Into Cold Water 00:45:22 Protocol 3: Heat Is Absolute 00:48:10 Injury & Pain 00:52:04 Protocol 4: Plasticity of Pain: Key Role of Vision 00:58:08 Sensing Disparate Body Parts As Merged 01:01:00 Pain “Syndromes”, Psychogenic Fever, “Psychosomatics” 01:04:40 Fibromyalgia, Naltrexone, Protocol 5: Acetyl-L-Carnitine 01:12:24 Protocol 6: Agmatine, S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe), L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate* 01:17:27 Acupuncture: Mechanism, Non-Responders, Itch & Inflammation 01:28:20 Laser Photobiomodulation, Protocol 7: Hypnosis (reveri.com) 01:30:00 Protocol 8: Pressure-Based Pain Relief, “Gate Theory of Pain (Relief)” 01:37:53 Redheads & Pain Thresholds, Endogenous Opioids 01:44:02 Protocol 8: Love & Pain, Dopamine 01:49:23 Pleasure & Reproduction, Dopamine & Serotonin, Oxytocin 01:51:40 Protocol 9: PEA, L-Phenylalanine (Precursor to Tyrosine) 01:55:40 Contextual Control of Pleasure by Autonomic Arousal, Dopamine Baselines 01:59:40 Pleasure-Pain Balance 02:01:24 Protocol 10: Controlling Pleasure, Dopamine & Motivation Over Time 02:06:40 Protocol 11: Immediate, Non-Goal-Directed Pleasure, PAG 02:08:40 Direction of Touch: Pleasure Versus Pain, Arousal & Touch “Sensitivity” 02:13:00 Synthesis & How to Conceptualize Pain and Pleasure, Support Please note that The Huberman Lab Podcast is distinct from Dr. Huberman's teaching and research roles at Stanford University School of Medicine. Somewhere in the Middle with Michele Barard welcomes Author Keshia Williams Keshia L. Williams loves the arts, music, people, and self-expression. She moved from Newark, NJ, to Atlanta, GA, to start the next chapter of life, moments, and inner peace. She enjoys discussing love, relationships, and raw feelings. Her book Loving with Emotions: You Must Feel Everything is who she is and represents what she has experienced as a child, adolescent, as well as coming into adulthood. Keshia has been writing since she was seven years old and has been told she had a wise soul beyond her years since the age of eight. Keshia had the opportunity to write children’s books as a child, but this option was held back from her without her knowledge. Later, she was told it was because she needed to enjoy her childhood. Keshia wants to share her voice with others to know the spoken word is for healing and that it is okay to release the past and speak out. Keshia wants to give people the opportunity to live out loud, live in their truth, and not be ashamed of who they are because strength is the key to excellence.
As the very first poem published in a literary magazine, The Love, Pain and the Independence is about each concept in their own descriptive situation.

Today, I share how I learned a valuable lesson through my sport of jiu jitsu. I learn a lot about life through jiu jitsu and it's why I keep pushing through it. The mat always catches me when I fall... the mat is also where I broke my foot and had to lose three months of income and some of my independence.
