I didn't think that the fans would be so crazy. W: Hey, this is normal! Carp games are really intense! M: Yeah! Um, who's your favorite player, Tomoka? W: My favorite players are Tanaka, Kikuchi, Maru, and Suzuki! M: Ha ha! That's a lot. Who's your MOST favorite? W: Um… I love 'em all, but I guess I love Suzuki the most! Oh! Suzuki's stepping up to the plate now! Wohoo! M: Yeah, but we're pretty far out here in right field. It's kind of hard to see. Here, you can use my binoculars. (later) M: Tomoka… here's your Carp udon. Ha ha. It's funny that even the food being sold here is about the Carp! W: Yeah, and almost everyone's wearing their favorite player's jersey. Mine's 51, of course. That's Suzuki's number. M: Oh, I should get one too. But they're SO expensive! W: Yeah… Hey, who do you like right now? M: I think Johnson's pretty cool. And besides, we're both American! Ha ha! W: Yeah, I like him a lot too. Hey, this Carp udon tastes great! How's that Carp takoyaki? M: It's really good. (Sound of a ball hit by a bat) Hey, Tomoka look! The ball's coming this way. Let's get out of here! W: No way! I'm gonna catch this ball! Get out of here, Daniel! (Pushing Daniel to the side) M: Ah!!! W: Ah! I got it! I got a home run ball! M: Way to go, Tomoka! A home run ball! And thanks for pushing me out of the way! But I got takoyaki all over me! M: (panting) Remind me again why we decided to become piano deliverymen. This lady lives on the 8th floor, and we've only made it up to the third floor! My arms already feel like spaghetti! W: It's piano delivery WOMAN! And I'll tell you why: this is all part of the four-year plan. Remember? M: Um... I'm so exhausted right now that I can hardly remember my own mother's name! Why don't you jog my memory? W: (sighs) Fine, Bruce. This is the last time I'm going to explain it to you. M: I CAN'T guarantee that. W: (huffing) Alright, the four-year plan is to work as piano delivery men... Ahem... piano delivery PEOPLE for two years in order to build up core body strength. Then, we spend the next two years training to be professional wrestlers. With the kind of strength we'll get from this job, we can become world champions! M: Wait, that four-year plan? You actually still think that's gonna work? I'm just working this job so I can see the inside of all the attractive women's houses in this city! W: You really are a hopeless pervert, aren't you? M: Hold that thought. I think my back's about to give out! W: You say something? M: Gahhhhh! (Bruce grimaces in pain and the cracking of his back is clearly audible. Bruce drops the piano and it falls down all three flights of stairs to its concrete grave.) W: What the... Bruce?! Do you know what you've just done!? You've ruined the four-year plan! I wanna go see the T-Rex exhibit first! W: Robbie, how many times do I have to tell you: dinosaurs went extinct millions of years ago. There're no T-Rexes in the zoos. M: And how many times do I have to tell YOU that that's just a government conspiracy fabricated to keep people from using dinosaurs as weapons. W: (Puts her palm over her face and sighs) OK, Robbie, OK. I believe you. Just stop talking about it already. I actually wanted to enjoy this trip to the zoo, and you're making that pretty difficult. M: Hey look! Lions! (Robbie grabs Regina's hand and makes a dash for the lion enclosure.) M: Wow! Lions are awesome! W: (giggling) I'm glad to see you've taken interest in an animal that actual exists. M: I always wished I could've been raised by lions. Living in the mountains, living off nothing but the flesh and blood of rhinos! W: Um, I don't think that's where or how lions live, Robbie. (Regina looks down at her phone to distract herself from how badly this date is going. Regina then looks up.) W: Hey Robbie what do you think of--. (Robbie is no where to be found.) W: Robbie? Robbie?! Where are you? (A few seconds later) M: I'm over here, Regina! (Regina looks over to see Robbie cuddling with one of the lions within the enclosure.) W: WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN THE LION ENCLOSURE ROBBIE!? THATS SUPER DANGEROUS! M: Just following my heart Regina, just following my heart. He… he’s up in a tree and can’t come down. M: OK. Where are you now? Is George hurt? W: I’m in the park…on Elm Street. I don’t think he’s hurt…He’s clinging to the branch. He’s trembling! Poor thing! He can’t come down by himself. I can’t go up and take him down either. It’s too high! M: OK. I’ll send a truck and ladder. Please don’t go up. Just stay there and wait for the truck…. Now, how old did you say George is? W: Um, he’s about three months. M: Three months?! How come he’s up in the tree? He’s only a baby! W: Well, he’s been naughty these days. He climbs up the tree every day and comes down by himself. I think he’s gone too high today… M: Huh? W: He was stuck in the rubbish bin the other day… He’s so cute. Now he can eat one tin of tuna each meal. He’s grown up so fast! M: So… he’s… he’s a kitten? W: Oh, didn’t I say that? M: No… Well, Ms., I’m sorry, but this number is for emergencies only. W: Yes. In the summer I usually just come here to swim, but lately I've been lifting and working on my cardio. I've been seeing pretty good results. …Do you have tickets, by the way? W: Tickets? Tickets to what? M: Tickets to see me in the Body Builders Contest! (flexes muscles) W: Hah! Very funny, but it still looks like you have a long way to go. I should talk, though—I was so lazy up until a month ago. If I wasn't sitting in the office, I was at home on the couch watching TV all day. Then, about a month ago, my friend insisted on dragging me to a yoga class here. It didn't sound too strenuous, so I gave it a shot. M: Yoga? Isn't that just more sitting around, though? You can still be a couch potato and meditate on the Buddha at home, you know. W: What? No. Doing yoga shapes your figure and relaxes your mood. It's basically like advanced stretching—religion doesn't factor into it. M: Oh, I see. I didn't know they offered a yoga class here… You do seem very limber, though… Maybe I could give it a shot as well. Are you happy with the results so far? W: Yeah, it's great! The movements were somewhat painful at first, but after doing it for a few days I got used to it. Then it started feeling better and better. And now if I don't do it for a couple days, I just don't feel right. M: Sounds like you're addicted. Well, I gotta give this a try if it's really as good as you're saying. Any tips for a beginner? W: Well, the main thing is just to stick with it. A lot of the exercises do require you to hold your breath while stretching for a long time though, so you might want to stick with your cardio for now. M: Alright. Well, I'll stick with the cardio, but swap out the lifting for yoga. It's not like I need to keep lifting anyway. I mean, look at me! Do you know a good veterinarian? Cause my pythons are looking sick! I remember that I was in the Cheerleader Club in school. I like baseball stadiums because we feel as if we are one when cheering for teams. M: Yes, Japanese really make an art of cheerleading. Americans don't really do it in groups like that. Anyway, baseball games are really fun because we don't know what's going to happen till the 9th inning. It might be a come-from-behind homer! W: Cheering for baseball always gives me power and inspiration. If we don't give up till the end, we can make it! No one knows the results. M: Yes, it teaches us the importance of team play, too. W: Cheering for baseball is fun because there are so many players. Each player has their own role and they are playing each position as hard as possible. It's a great message that we have to do our missions as hard as we can, right? M: Yes, that's true. Hey, why do you like baseball so much? W: It's because of my father. He loves baseball. He used to take me to the stadium at least once a month. I haven't been to the stadium for a long time! M: Oh really? What are you doing tonight? W: Just staying at home and watching TV shows. M: Do you want to come to the stadium with us tonight? W: Would that be OK? I'd love to! M: I'll drive you to the stadium, but you have to help take care of my kids, OK? It's called teamwork. W: Cheering for baseball is fun because there are so many players. Each player has their own role and they are playing each position as hard as possible. I can see there are a lot of tourists here too. W: Yeah, I often pass through Peace Park and there are always non-Japanese people here, which is great. M: It's a communal meeting place. My high school had one in the school where some students get together and practice dancing. W: The carvings are beautiful! There are European, Maori, historical, and contemporary works. W: I think it's wonderful that Maori culture is not lost even though a lot of people came from Europe to this country. M: Yeah. It’s a Maori way of cooking. They steam meats and vegetables under the ground with hot stones. It takes hours to cook. M: I see. And how was it? W: It was OK. How was your stay in New Zealand? W: Hi Nathan! It was great. I really didn’t want to come back… M: I bet it was great… Um, you’ve…gained a bit of weight? W: Yeah…the food in New Zealand was really different. I had a big dinner every night, meat almost every day, not as many vegetables as in Japan…I’d never seen a whole chicken at home in Japan, but they cook it in the oven at home! They also eat lamb. There was a lot of yummy food too: like ice cream, cookies, and chocolate! No wonder I gained weight! It’s OK though. I really liked it. M: Yeah, I think you’ll lose weight now that you’re back in Japan. So, do you have any pictures of New Zealand? W: Of course! I was there for almost a year so there are tons of them. Look. Here’s the first picture I took in New Zealand. M: Is this your host family? W: Yeah. He’s my host dad. M: And…what are you doing, pressing your nose to his nose? W: It’s called a hongi, the traditional Maori greeting. My host dad was related to Maori, the native New Zealanders, you know. He greeted me in the Maori way. You play rugby, right? Have you seen the All Blacks do the haka. It’s traditional dancing. M: Oh yeah! They’re really cool! W: Hey, take a look at this picture. M: Is it… a meal? W: Yes, it’s called hangi. It’s a Maori way of cooking. They steam meats and vegetables under the ground with hot stones. It takes hours to cook. M: I see. And how was it? W: It was OK. But I heard some students say they didn’t like the smell. Anyway, it was good to see hangi because it’s hard work, starting from digging the hole! M: I bet. I don't mind doing housework. It'd be fun! I want to have my own space and time to fully experience college life! W: Well, I want to…but it costs a lot. And I have two younger sisters… M: OK…but I think even though you live with your family, you can still have a good time at uni!
