Diagnostics in Life Sciences is the Key to Healthcare w/ Mara Aspinall of Illumina Ventures AZ TRT S05 EP12 (227) 3-24-2024 What We Learned This Week Diagnostics is the key to healthcare, identifying medical issues and designing the right treatment for the patient Five Levels of Diagnostics – Screening, Diagnosis, Prognosis, Interacting, & Monitoring Illumina Ventures is a life sciences venture capital firm with 35 companies in their portfolio Their investment companies deal in genomics, cancer testing, telehealth, at home testing & more Future of Biotech will be impacted by both AI and Nanotech Guest: Mara G. Aspinall, Partner, Illumina Ventures https://www.illuminaventures.com/ President and CEO, Health Catalysts Group Board Member of AZ Bio - https://www.azbio.org/ Mara Aspinall is a healthcare industry leader and pioneer with a commitment to civic involvement. She is a Partner at Illumina Ventures, an independent, global healthcare venture capital firm focused on genomics and precision health investing including diagnostics and therapeutic products. Aspinall has deep roots in venture investing, having co-founded BlueStone Venture Partners in 2017. BlueStone has a strong portfolio of diagnostic, medical device, and digital health companies in the U.S. Southwest. Throughout her career, Aspinall has spearheaded initiatives to educate payers and policymakers on genomics and personalized medicine. She publishes the popular Sensitive and Specific: The Testing Newsletter and the annual Diagnostics Year in Review. This commitment to expanding knowledge inspired Aspinall to create and co-found the Biomedical Diagnostics master's degree program at Arizona State University, the only program dedicated exclusively to diagnostics, genetics, and genomics. Previously, Aspinall was President and CEO of Ventana Medical Systems, a billion-dollar division of TheRoche Group, (now Roche Tissue Diagnostics), a worldwide leader in the development and commercialization of tissue-based cancer diagnostics, where she led more than two dozen major instrument and assay launches and helped position the company as a global leader in companion diagnostics. Aspinall spent 13 years at Genzyme Corporation, where she served as President of Genzyme Genetics and Genzyme Pharmaceuticals. Aspinall transformed the business from a small, specialized player to one of the top five laboratories in the U.S. while setting the industry standard for quality testing. The business was sold to LabCorp for $1 billion in 2010. Aspinall also served as Founder and CEO of On-Q-ity, a start-up diagnostic company dedicated to circulating tumor cells. During the pandemic, Aspinall emerged as a national authority on COVID testing, serving as the principal investigator at Arizona State University on grants from The Rockefeller Foundation, creating TestingCommons.com and EvidenceCommons.com – internationally recognized interactive databases on COVID diagnostics and related research and clinical applications. Aspinall was named Arizona Biosciences Leader of the Year by the Arizona Bioindustry Association and one of “100 Most Inspiring People in Life Sciences” by PharmaVOICE magazine. Aspinall has extensive board experience. She has served on multiple public and private company boards in leadership roles over the last ten years. She is currently Chair of the Board of OraSure (OSUR) and Chair of the Nominating & Governance Committee of Castle Biosciences (CSTL). She also serves on the board of BlueCross BlueShield of Arizona. She holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, a BA in International Relations from Tufts University, and is certified in Cybersecurity Oversight from Carnegie Mellon/NACD. Notes: Seg 1 All of life sciences and biotech is healthcare. Diagnostics is the central organizing portion in healthcare, and consists of testing if needed. There are five (5) levels to diagnostics. Level One is Screening – where a patient may or may not be sick, check the health status, and also could be regular check ups for something pre-diagnosed. Level Two is the Diagnosis - where tests are taken and then you see the results of the test. Level Three is the Prognosis – what symptoms does the patient have, and where you need to go from here, what will happen with these symptoms. Level Four is a newer part called Interacting - This is where you can do personalized medicine and what's called theranostics or drug treatment. You combine drugs with the treatment. You have to analyze what type of drug is needed. What someone's body is like, how they metabolize drugs. What dose central levels are needed. People's reactions to drugs is not just body size or weight as suggested previously, but could be very much based on the genes. Level Five also new is called Monitoring - If disease treatment is over how do you monitor over the long term. What test do you take to confirm that there's been no return of the disease. Examples would be an MRD test which stands for a minimal residue disease. You also may be doing things like CT scans or x-ray scans in the past, but sometimes these do not detect disease properly. Some cancers could be very small and you need a blood test. People may check in through cycles of a disease treatment also. Seg 2 Regarding monitoring and Level Five using cancer as an example. People may go through 6 rounds of chemotherapy treatment. The doctor should monitor by round 3 and check is the tumor reduced or how is the chemo working. Do you want to have benchmarks to see if you're reaching the health goals and if the medicine is effective. Future treatment might be biopsy of a tumor and testing glass to see what drug may work on it. Revisiting Level Four in personalized medicine you may see in the future Chino metric analysis. Check the risk level for certain diseases so you can have a preemptive process to prevent potential predisposed diseases. This is level A. Level B would be when diagnosed with a disease, you check the tumor, mutations and genes checking both the DNA and RNA. Mara is on the board of AZ Bio (.org). The goal of AZ Bio is bringing educated people about biotech together to affect the state, the universities, and companies. Move research along with the responsibility to patients in the medical field. Mara is involved in venture capital which is critical, because it funds entrepreneurs in good companies to research and create Biotech product processes and products. There are other levels of investment, which typically start with friends and angel investing then move on to venture capital, and then private equity for really big rounds. She was the founder of Blue Stone and they invested in Southwest companies. In the fall of 2023 she became a partner at Illumina Ventures. They deal with 35 different companies. They've invested in all levels, biotech and genomics. You're looking for a VC to be specialized and knowledgeable about an industry so they can help the business grow provide it with money and add expertise. Seg 3 Mara and Illumina Ventures recently put out a report - Diagnostics Year in Review. This report covers how did the industry is doing, what stocks earn money, what IPOs there were, financials, clinical, innovation, and mergers and acquisitions. How does venture-capital work? Typically you have individual funds one through five. You raise money from investors and invest in new emerging companies. Companies may be doing research, drug development, or working other areas of life sciences. Examples of companies in their portfolio: Delphi deals in cancer, diagnosis test and early screening for cancer and detection test. Level one screen checking for lung cancer and what early symptoms there are. Biopsy can be dangerous so you need other tests. Let's Get Checked - a telehealth online company that brings testing to the patient either at home or in an urgent care or ER. This is faster and easier. Examples of test are Covid test and STD test. Serimmune human immunity research company Genome Medical a genetic counseling company, working with patients to discuss what diseases they may be predisposed to, and ways to not pass it to the Seg 4 Future of Biotech We saw with the pandemic, the rise of telemedicine with faster online diagnosis. We will also see in the future that AI changes drug development and reading tests The creation of better and faster equipment. The rise of nanotech, and early detection of diseases with blood samples - for example, at home blood draw. So, it's been an interesting week in the world of education, and for those with children about to enter the NCEA years, it's be fair to say you're probably wondering what's in store for your kid. While the current system has pros and cons, the idea of changing it up when your child is halfway through their NCEA years is annoying and confusing for everybody involved. And it doesn't help when the plan keeps changing. In April this year, the Minister of Education, Jan Tinetti announced Level 1 changes were going to go ahead in 2024.But the mandatory introduction of new NCEA assessment standards for Level 2 and Level 3 would be pushed back a year, meaning schools would not have to start using Level 2 until 2026, and Level Three until 2027. Next year, my second child starts the new Level 1, with its reduced subjects, merged specialist subjects across business, math and science fields and new forms of assessments, including speeches. Because all 15-year-olds love getting up and speaking in front of their peers. And then she's going to revert back to the current NCEA system for Year 12 and 13. At least we're familiar with this, as our oldest is going through it now. But the approach to change has been messy. Add to this, the news that some schools have decided to ditch NCEA Level One because it's not fit for purpose, and parents are left with the impression their Ministry has got it wrong. We know we have a literacy and numeracy issue, and change is needed. But why aren't we listening to the 56 schools who have already altered their program for Year 11 or created a whole new qualification for the year, like St Cuthberts, whose principal spoke out this week? These schools- and they're not all private schools- believe they can better prepare their students for Year 12 and 13 by offering more time in the classroom, a better understanding of their chosen subjects, and less time doing assessments. Some schools have data back to 2015 showing the impact of their different approaches. Why are we not looking at their results and using this information to drive change? From what I can tell, many of these schools have been happy to share their experience with the Ministry of Education, but the Ministry of education appears to be doing the complete opposite. The proposed ‘dumbing-down' of the curriculum doesn't benefit many. More work should be done trying to work out how to raise the performance of those who are currently struggling. I've also heard teachers say that the new version of NCEA won't be as internationally respected as the current system, so I imagine IB and Cambridge would become more popular options. Reducing subjects is short-sighted. Now, I know some people believe that school is all about focusing on important subjects to do with math and literacy, but a wider range of subjects increases the learning enjoyment for many. And exposure to subjects may influence futures. If you have, or have had a kid go through the current system, you'll know how it works. For many, Year 11 is a practice year to get to grips with the constant assessments and the structure of NCEA. Year 12 is the year that matters. These are the grades that get used to get into whatever course you want to do after school. And Year 13 is a little bit like a backup year. So you can see why schools are working towards making changes to Year 11, to better prepare students for Year 12. All I would say from our experience is that Year 12 is a big step up, and students need to be NCEA match-fit. If schools feel they can better achieve this and provide more time in the classroom, why wouldn't they? When did something as fundamental as education become so difficult, so political, and so polarizing? What's keeping me sane is the number of teenagers I see who have survived NCEA, headed off to the next stage of their lives and are thriving. Last week on the show, we invited a panel of university students to discuss issues and headlines that were important to them. This morning we wanted to keep the conversation going, but this time we focused on Level Three high school students - what they're talking about, what's on their minds, and what keeps them up at night. So, parents, listen up! Ashley Keeping is a student at St. James Regional High in Port aux Basques. Gavin Burry attends Gander Collegiate, and Billie Wicks is at Clarenville High School.

This level includes VO2max testing efforts (so a 10 second flying 200 on the track to a 5 minute VO2Max effort), — you are using everything you got. All out for a short time. Pacing is hard without practice but what is notable is how, even with proper pacing, you fail to maintain the power output after a very short time. This is similar to weight lifting…the bigger the weight, the fewer the reps. The fast twitch muscles fatigue quickly from using up ATP and accumulation of waste products that make the muscle environment more acidic and interfere with the muscle function. At this level, oxygen is the limiter. After a rest, the muscle recovers and can go again but not quite as well. This process can be repeated a few times but the fast twitch muscle will get fatigued (maybe damaged?) and need to heal and adapt before the next effort (hopefully a couple days hence if you went to failure). At this level, you really need a power meter or smart trainer to measure your power output for the training interval. HR won't help because of the delay in HR response. LEVEL FOUR (4): Lactate threshold / FTP/ steady state (around an hour) — it's a concept as much as it's a power output that can be sustained as long as glucose is available to burn and lactate can be cleared and used by the mitochondria. Similar to this is the Functional Threshold Power….It's called functional because an hour is a nice round number and is approximately the time needed to complete a 40k TT which is a standard TT distance in cycling. This might also be about the time it takes to burn through available glucose. You are breathing heavily but steadily. You are not talking. At this level, if you paced it correctly, glucose is the limiter, not oxygen. A power meter is helpful but you could also do an FTP test based on distance covered in 1 hour or time to compete 25 miles. LEVEL THREE (3) Tempo / Sweetspot (also called “no man's land”) is in-between lactate threshold and endurance pace. This is where racing lives unless it is a very short or very long race. This is advertised as being more time-efficient than polarized training. Sweetspot is the high end, just below Threshold, while Tempo is the lower end, just above Endurance/FatMax level. LEVEL TWO (2): Endurance/ fat max (a long time). This is the famous Zone 2
Even new, completely innovative products have competition. Long before your product comes into the market, customers have found ways to solve their problems. Understanding who your real competitors are is critical to your business success. As you analyze your competitors, it can be helpful to think about the three levels of competition. Level One. These companies solve the customer's problem with products or services that are very similar to yours. While you may have enhanced features or slightly different offerings, it is likely an uninformed consumer will assume your products are interchangeable. Level Two. These companies offer an alternative solution to your customer's problem. On the surface, they may not appear to be a direct competitor because the product or service is dramatically different. If, however, this alternative solution solves your customer's problem, it is a competitor. Level Three. These companies or products do not solve the same problem at all, but compete for your customer's limited resources. Your business may not have competitors in every category, but you have some. As you think about the solution you provide from your customer's perspective, why would they choose one of the alternative solutions? Price? Habit? Unless you understand why they are making the choice, it will be difficult to help them choose you instead. A competitive analysis is just one part of your overall business plan Ready to update yours? Check our our new Self-Paced Business Plan Workshop

What's the difference between a good leader and a great leader? According to John Maxwell, leadership expert, best-selling author, and founder of the world-famous John Maxwell Group, the answer depends on what level of leadership ability a person reaches. In 5 Levels of Leadership, Maxwell outlines the various stages of leadership from least evolved to most evolved. What are the 5 Levels of Leadership? Level 1 – Position A leader grants a particular person the right to lead. As a result, people follow them because they are directed to, not because they are influential. Level 2 – Permission The leader focuses on building and growing relationships with their employees. As a result, their team members give them free permission to lead. Level 3 – Production When a leader reaches Level Three, they focus on the increase of results. In turn, people follow them because they trust the person knows what they're doing and will lead them in the right direction. Level 4 – People Development Those who reach Level Four are servant leaders who teach, mentor, and multiply other leaders. They obtain and maintain followers because people know they positively influence the lives of everyone around them. Level 5 – Pinnacle Level Five leaders—the rarest type of leader—are well-known for their accomplishments, how they've enriched the lives of others, and led their organizations to change the world for the better. These leaders have followers because of who they are, what they've done, and what they represent to people. John Maxwell is a leadership expert who has written more than ten books on the subject, several of which are New York Times bestsellers. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michael-kaagee-mante/message

Tony dives into the third level of leadership in this most recent episode. Some leaders are fortunate to start on this level, but not many. One of the key traits of level three leaders is their ability to foster and maintain relationships with others. In order to inspire others, there needs to be some baseline of relationship so they can buy into what you are trying to achieve. Tony reveals a few other key characterics at this level such as providing opportunities for others to lead without them asking to show that you trust them and want to see them do well.Start your own podcast with Buzzsprout and get a $20 Amazon Gift Card using this link https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=1734803. Health and safety will be paramount when Auckland and Waikato schools reopen to select students tomorrow morning.Schools in Level Three areas will reopen tomorrow for Years 11, 12 and 13.Ventilation, mask-wearing and social distancing will be used to keep students safe.Grant McMillan, the Principal of Manurewa's James Cook High School told Tim Dower he won't be taking any risks.“If at any time I'm concerned, if I believe that things are no longer safe, I'll go straight to our board of trustees and ask to close.”McMillan says he's made a roadmap for every student at his school.“So we are going to use those maps with our students and get them where they need to be before the 10th or 17th of December.”LISTEN ABOVE
Retail stores operating under Level Three are still pushing Government for a firm date to reopen.New Zealand will switch to a new traffic light system to suppress Covid when all DHBs reach a 90 per cent vaccination rate.Businesses will be able to operate at any level — but with increased health and safety measures in the orange and red zone. But Retail New Zealand's CEO Greg Harford told Andrew Dickens we also need a date for when the population must hit the vaccine target.“Setting that date will create a sense of urgency. People who are sitting there and thinking ‘I'm not so sure if I need to rush into this', the reality is we do. Businesses are under pressure, families are under pressure.”LISTEN ABOVE
The Tamaki's are once again defending their right to protest. Bishop Brian Tamaki appeared in court this week for failing to comply with a Level Three order and breaching his bail conditions. He has attended and helped organise two lockdown protests and violated his bail conditions by attending another protest on October 16. Wife Hannah Tamaki told Kate Hawkesby he fully understands he could go to jail. “I don't think he deliberately wants to break the law but, he's gonna tip-toe up to the line and shout over to the other side: People, make the choices that are right for you.” LISTEN ABOVE
Predictable but disappointing. That's how one expert is describing the decision to keep Auckland under current Level Three restrictions for another two weeks.Emeritus Professor Des Gorman told Andrew Dickens the Government had to balance the chorus of experts wanting Level Four with the reality compliance is slipping. He says he's disappointed because what we needed today was clarity - with timelines and what the endgame looks like.“Mothers and fathers homeschooling, the people whose businesses are going bust, people whose jobs are at threat, people whose mental health is deteriorating, they didn't need ‘tune in on Wednesday and Friday and we'll tell you the next instalment,' they needed clarity, they needed hope.”LISTEN ABOVE
Auckland's mayor has labelled party-goers who breached lockdown "bloody idiots". Footage from the massive party at a North Shore property on Saturday night went viral on social media yesterday. Under Auckland's Level Three rules, only two households are allowed to meet outdoors - with a limit of 10 people. Phil Goff says these people should have thought about their families and the wider community. "It's just selfish and irresponsible to have an event like that, knowing it's breaking the rules when everybody else is making a sacrifice so we can get back to normal and have a decent Christmas together." Korea24 – 2021.10.15. (Friday) News Briefing: The government has announced that current social distancing levels will remain in place for another two weeks, but some restrictions will be eased from Monday. Under Level Four, the capital region will allow up to eight people, including four fully vaccinated individuals, to gather at multipurpose facilities. Up to ten, including six fully vaccinated people, will be allowed in other areas under Level Three. Authorities said the upcoming two-week period will serve as a stepping stone towards the transition into the so-called "with COVID-19" system of gradually normalizing socioeconomic activities early next month. (Bryce Olk) In-Depth News Analysis (Weekly Economy Review): The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced this week that they are maintaining their growth outlook for South Korea this year at 4.3%, but the overall global outlook has been revised down from 6% to 5.9%, citing concerns over supply chain disruptions. The Bank of Korea also gave similar warnings to a National Assembly committee on Friday, saying the supply chain issues could last longer than expected. The BOK also hinted this week that an additional rate hike could come as early as November. Professor Yang Jun-sok from the Catholic University of Korea joins us in the studio to provide his analysis on these issues. Korea Trending with Walter Lee: 1. She has just completed her first book called “Agile Business Innovation & Design” which will be released later this year. Podcast episode summary: Sari shared her wisdom on teams, her approach to team coaching and her definition of agile and how she supports companies adopt an agile model for business innovation. Sari populated this episode with numerous anecdotes and nuggets of wisdom for both leaders and practitioners of team coaching. Her insight into teams and what makes them great makes this a must listen. Noteworthy points of discussion Agile is not about leadership characteristics or psychological factors it is more about how the business is structured, how leadership is created to have the energy of a start-up and to be coach like and how the business co-operates with its customers and how innovation is married to a commercial orientation. Sari consults business to adopt an Agile Business Innovation design in 28 weeks. Business must want to change to think and be Agile. Intact Academy offers a very comprehensive Team Coaching Program. Based a lot around TA (Transactional Analysis) using concepts like Voice Dialogue, Constellations, Group Dynamics all used to support the team change Sari reminds listeners it is important to distinguish between Groups and Teams many people confuse the terms and forget what it means to work on a team Members have to accept Interdependence and Collaboration. Also, it is important that people understand the roles of Leadership and Followership Sari described the approach she uses to support coaches learn about team coaching. She is adamant about the order in which team coaches approach teams. Level One is all about the Structure of a team -boundaries/hierarchy/Roles Level Two is about relations on a team -how to improve the dynamics and improve social ranking between members Level Three is about the team Imago or perception of the team and its culture Sari shares an example of how Social Ranking when it is not equidistant can derail a team Story is an important feature of teams and important to attend to the narratives teams hold and whether the current narrative will yield the change required for the team Some trip wires novice team coaches fall prey include assuming the role of the leader, mixing up the order described above, being there “merely to help” as opposed to speaking the truth and helping the Leader and team get really clear about what is expected to innovate and change Sari believes love is a wonderful energy for teams and helps a team change its story once care, attention and respect are in place Sari uses the Hero's Journey with teams. Joseph Campbells book is about the story of stories -all stories can be seen as 12 steps -Vogel's work with the Hero's Journey is perhaps more accessible Finally Sari after over 34 years as a practicing consultant, coach and leader is returning to what she calls the essentials, helping create meetings between people/sense making of relations-this is what is needed in todays' world – she is also going to do a lot more with stories and story -telling using dance and singing Sari shares the resources she uses to inform her practice with teams ‘ but she also shares an invaluable resource, the everyday happenings. She suggests that we become better at everyday observation. Teams reveal themselves in the same way. Observation followed by conceptualisation to understand that behaviour means for change. Introduction: Sarah Hill is the co-owner of Dialogix and she describes herself as a dialogue facilitator and behavioural dynamics interventionist. The focus of her work is on tackling some of the toughest and most demanding behavioural challenges. She works with CEOs and senior leaders from a range of different cultures and countries. She designs & delivers accredited training programs on structural dynamics, generative dialogue and childhood story. Sarah is the Author of “Where did you learn to behave like that? A coaching guide for working with Leaders. She has also co-authored the book The Tao of Dialogue. Sarah holds a PhD and has published articles on collaborative research working with invisible realities & issues of integrity through the lens of Structural Dynamics. Sarah's ambition as a thought leader is to help Leaders recognise that their unresolved childhood stories not only adversely impact themselves but the teams and whole systems of which they are a part. Podcast episode summary: This episode explores the methodology of Structural Dynamics and Childhood Story. Sarah explained how the behavioural components of structural dynamics can help a team understand their communication patterns and resolve some stuck patterns. She distinguished between the 4 levels of structural dynamics and how practical a model it can be for teams. She also explored the very real invisible realities of childhood story and how shadow behaviours in high stake situations can impede constructive dialogue. Between us we shared our own childhood stories and the work it takes to re-narrate internal narratives. Noteworthy points of discussion Sarah ‘s interest and passion for change and generative dialogue came after a chance meeting with an organisation called Prison Dialogue. There she witnessed the power of these processes to exercise change even in tough cultures. Exposed to the work of David Kantor and her PhD “Separate Lives silenced voices” is a theme through all of her work Sarah referenced the podcast I had with Dr. Paul Lawrence, episode 13 where he explored Structural Dynamics with me Sarah illuminated the 4 different levels of Structural Dynamics Level One: speaks to our action propensities in conversation through four different acts, the move, the follow, oppose and the bystander Level Two: These are the operating rules governing our behaviour, open, closed or random Level Three: describes the communication domain we use or attend to and they include, Power which is about action or task, Affect is about intimacy or a focus on relationship, Meaning is about sense making, thought or knowledge Level Four: relates to your childhood story that is often invisible If I were to self-assess using this model, I might consider that I am naturally inclined towards Move/Random/Meaning/ Sarah shared her story about being uncomfortable with oppose having been in a family dynamic where oppose was used and where for Sarah as a child it was dangerous to oppose or be opposed. That was her internal narrative In high stakes we can react in ways that are embarrassing & shaming. Often something else is playing out behind the shadow behaviour, a fear or old narrative that is now not helpful The work involves understanding what happens in high stakes, what are the triggers that induce shadow behaviour? what are the themes or fears that lie behind our behaviour in high stakes? what are some of our formative experiences? The work is not to dwell on the story but to recraft a new narrative, knowing that the story does not change Structural Dynamics helps to make the invisible visible. It provides a way to understand what might be appearing in conversation and why often there exist model clashes between individuals on teams or in organisations Structural Dynamics is very proactive. It equips teams to change the nature of their discourses by having a common language to explore together. Sarah is of the mind that the work of Structural Dynamics and the associated behavioural change work necessary is still not central enough on teams Sarah appreciates that to do the work teams need to slow down to speed up. And each level works across a given season, such that by Year Three you will be in Level Three of your CPCs. But of course, not everyone wants to wait a few years to be better…so this section is dedicated to explaining the progression of CPCs, defining basic exceptions, and explaining how to tackle your current season goals.
