Timestamps: (6:40) - Creche update / Listener of the week (11:23) - Patty Wu-Murad Update (14:46) - Grace Millane British woman Grace Millane (21) had the world at her feet.   She had just graduated university and was taking a year off to travel the world.   After spending weeks in South America, Grace arrived in New Zealand in November 2018.  She enjoyed meeting the locals and making new friends. In late November 2018, Grace matched on Tinder with a man named Jesse Kempson and the two decided to meet up.  They enjoyed visiting some bars and restaurants in Auckland.  The two hit it off and Grace decided to return to Jesse's place for the night.   She was last seen getting out of an elevator in his apartment complex and was never seen again.  Jesse murdered Grace that night.  Over the coming hours, Jesse made internet searches including "rigor mortis", "extra large bags" and "carpet cleaner".  He also went on another Tinder date that had been previously planned, while Grace's body was in his room. Jesse would end up confessing to Grace's murder and has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 17 years. Apologies, recording started late due to technical issues. Atomic Habits by James Clear was discussed in relation to the spiritual path by Ayya Karunika at the book club on Saturday, 24th May 2025. Ayya explored how the concept of the “aggregation of marginal gains” (p. 13) can be used to enhance our daily practice. She offered a brief yet insightful overview of the four laws of behavior change (pp. 43–55), showing how they can support the cultivation of wholesome habits while helping us abandon unwholesome ones. She also introduced practical strategies such as habit stacking (pp. 72–79) as effective methods for integrating the Buddha's teachings into daily routine. In addition, she explained in detail how to apply the noble eightfold path in daily life and discussed the importance of focusing on systems rather than goals (pp. 23–28) in order to achieve better results in meditation and to strengthen overall progress on the spiritual path. Bhikkhuni Ayya Kārunikā is currently the senior resident monastic at Santi Forest Monastery, NSW, Australia and the spiritual director for New Zealand Bhikkhuni Sangha Trust, Hamilton. She has been in monastic life for over 14 years and she received her full ordination as a bhikkhunī in 2014 at Dhammasara Nuns monastery in Western Australia where she lived and trained for over a decade with Ajahn Hāsapaññā. She has been a student of Ajahn Brahm and Ajahn Brahmali for over 2 decades. Ayya Kārunikā is able to articulate the Buddhist teachings in a way that is practical and comprehensible to people of all ages and has experience in conducting retreats for both adults and youth. While she has a PhD in Microbiology and worked as a scientist, she has also been the building project manager for the construction of the Dhammasara Nuns Monastery main building complex and has worked with many volunteers over the years. Ayya Kārunikā was born in Sri Lanka but has been living and working in Australia for over 2 decades. She has a passion to share her experience and knowledge and loves working with people and also doing creative projects. Today, we'll talk about how Tim came to join Frequent Miler.(00:52) - How did Tim get started in miles and points?(02:12) - Around 16 or 17, Tim and his brother planned out a series of roadtrips to try to see beyond their Midwestern home.(06:24) - To prepare for his honeymoon years later, Tim volunteered for medical research studies to raise money. His goal: take his new wife to the top 5 places she wanted to see. (New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, France, and Ireland.) (09:10) - After all that travel, Tim and his wife ended up with a bunch of United miles. He started to learn a bit about miles when he attempted to use those United miles to fly home for the holidays. (13:07) - Gradually, Tim started to learn more, starting with a Southwest credit card.(14:14) - When Tim started entering the wine making industry, he started traveling more for work and had the opportunity to join an expensed trip to South Africa if he could get himself there. As a tall guy, he was motivated to figure out a way to fly business class.(20:31) - Tim and his wife planned a trip to the Maldives, which got Tim even deeper into the hobby, especially when he sort of stumbled upon a type of mistake fare of sorts where his stay was earning points as though it were a paid stay. For years, Payson has maintained that Nichole is the most talented athlete in their household, but it wasn't until this winter that she finally decided to add some structure to her riding and shoot for some concrete goals. It all came about during an unusual lull in her schedule shortly after she and Payson finished his crossing project in New Zealand and got married in Tasmania, and just after she completed her capstone project for her Master's Degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins. Payson and Nichole sat down to talk about how her tentative request for a training plan turned into an increasingly busy racing schedule. She started out by jumping into the four-day Sahara Gravel stage race in Morocco in February before winning the Central Missouri Circuit, a 340-mile ultra race, earlier this month. This weekend, she'll be lining up for the Unbound 100 in preparation for the Vapor Trail, a high-country bikepacking race later this year. Nichole talks about surprising herself in Morocco by discovering a thrill for racing, dealing with the heat, mental exhaustion, and fueling headaches during the overnight Central Missouri Circuit, and what it's been like having Payson as a coach. What does liberty entail? How have concepts of liberty changed over time? And what are the global consequences? Liberty as Independence: The Making and Unmaking of a Political Ideal (Cambridge UP, 2025) surveys the history of rival views of liberty from antiquity to modern times. Quentin Skinner traces the understanding of liberty as independence from the classical ideal to early modern Britain, culminating in the claims of the Whig oligarchy to have transformed this idea into reality. Yet, with the Whig vision of a free state and civil society undermined by the American Revolution of 1776, Skinner explores how claims that liberty was fulfilled by an absence of physical or coercive restraint came to prominence. Liberty as Independence examines new dimensions of these rival views, considering the connections between debates on liberty and debates on slavery, and demonstrating how these ideas were harnessed in feminist discussions surrounding limitations on the liberty of women. The concept of liberty is inherently global, and Skinner argues strongly for the reinstatement of the understanding of liberty as independence. Illustrates the connections between philosophical debates surrounding liberty and the sociopolitical contexts in which they took place Provides a comprehensive analysis and bibliography of rival ways of thinking about liberty Explores the contribution of the American Revolution to discussions on the idea of liberty Quentin Skinner is Emeritus Professor of Humanities at Queen Mary University of London. In Budget 2025, private schools will receive subsidies increasing the annual spend by $4.6 million a year, to $46.2 million. As well as this, the annual spend on charter schools will double to $57 million. ACT Party Leader, David Seymour, says that independent schools are an important part of New Zealand's education landscape that offers diversity of choice for parents. For our weekly catchup, News and Editorial Director and Monday Wire Host, Joel, spoke to the ACT Party's Simon Court about the additional support independent schools will receive, and how this will benefit the average taxpayer. They also discussed changes to Jobseeker and emergency benefits for 18-to-19 year olds, as those receiving this benefit will now have their benefit tested against their parents income. The move, which is set to come into effect in 2027, is estimated to impact almost 9000 young people. They also discussed changes to Kiwisaver, where the government will halve subsidies and increase employer contributions to a minimum of 4% from 3%. But first, they discussed the additional support for independent schools.

According to Bloomberg, the group of 12 major oil-exporting nations, including Saudi Arabia, UAE, and others, is considering a July increase of 411,000 barrels per day (bpd)—roughly triple the previously planned amount. This would mirror supply increases in May and June. Such an increase in July could lead to a breakdown in Brent crude's $60-per-barrel price floor (as long as the war risk premium remains suppressed). Brent fell to $63 a barrel, down about 1.7% following the news.
