Greg Foran is back where I suspect he belongs, and likes. The former Air New Zealand boss, if you have missed it, is off to Kroger, which is America's second biggest grocer behind Walmart. I have never met a New Zealander who has worked in America that belongs in America more. It was evident from the first time I met him that he was American. You can spot them in their shirts and ties. They are conservative and yet impeccably pressed. He looked like he had starched himself getting out of bed each morning. The last time he was in here, his farewell interview, we talked off air about where now. He didn't say specifically, but I knew it was America. The bit he never explained, probably because he either couldn't for commercial reasons, or couldn't because he hadn't quite worked it out for himself, was what the hell he was ever doing back in New Zealand. I asked him any number of times in a sort of non-direct way, what on earth was it about a small airline at the bottom of the world that would drag you out of Walmart to come and run it? Possibly given he wasn't running Walmart, it was a job in which he was running something so his CV would show a Kroger in years to come that he was ready to be boss. At Walmart he lived in Arkansas and flew in private jets. In New Zealand he kept having to explain why the Wellington to Taupo plane never took off. The Covid thing must have been the nightmare from hell and it wasn't his fault. But even without it and the myriad of problems he faced, including the inexplicable cluster around engines that no airline anywhere seems to have encountered the way Air New Zealand has, you always got the impression he was either here for a short time, or it had all been a patriotic mistake driven by a laudable desire to return to home base and make some sort of contribution. But I can tell you this, of all the Air New Zealand CEO's I have known - business legend Ralph Norris, marketing genius Rob Fyfe, Prime Minister Chris Luxon and Greg Foran - no one looked less at home and more bewildered than Greg. Some people loved him because he was often at the airport checking their backs in, so work ethic was never the issue. The issue was Air New Zealand wasn't American. I bet you he has never been happier, or more relieved. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Auckland needs sporting events. As many as possible. As big and flash and shiny as they come. The oft rumoured State of Origin has been teasing the populace for many a year. Rumours are still thick on the ground; this time it's thought that the announcement will be as early as this month. Great if it happens, but it will be a one off I'd suggest, great for a stellar tourist weekend for the 09, but not the long term locked down major sporting event the city yearns for. We have the ASB Classic. An annual tennis-fest to be proud of, long may it be a staple of the summer. The annual All Black fixture at Eden Park. Then crickets. The insects, not the test version which the city is incapable of hosting. It's hardly big or shiny either right? I'm not sure it's sport, but the hugely popular Black Clash cricket sportainment event is in the Bay. No big motorsport event in AK, although there were attempts at bringing Formula E here, but that got quashed before it had a chance to plug in. Supercars? Taupo and Christchurch. The World Rally Championship has been and gone; it is now a rarely realised pipe dream. Sevens rugby is long dead. Aotearoa's major golf tournament is in Queenstown. PDC darts? At least we've pinched that back from the Tron. Surfing's World League? Raglan. No America's Cup, thanks Grant. All of this points to one thing, the Auckland leg of the Sail GP. If the government and Auckland city don't fight tooth and nail to keep this rapidly expanding global event here on the sparkling Waitemata, somebody will need to get in the sea. These opportunities to host a major sporting event like this as a rare as a summer without poo on our beaches. Secure it and secure it long term. Taupo residents have vowed to fight for the town's hospital, due to fears it could lose critival services because of dire workforce shortages. The shortages were so bad that contingency plans were drawn up last year to move patients to Rotorua Hospital if Taupo's clinic had to close its doors. That would leave the area's 40,000 people without a hospital. It is a scenario residents at a packed public meeting last night said cannot happen. Jimmy Ellingham reports.
An agreement between Taupo councillors and local iwi Ngāti Tūwharetoa has caused controversy after one of the councillors called in lobby group Hobson Pledge to raise concerns with a wider audience. Maori News Journalist Pokere Paewai spoke to Corin Dann.

Two popular regional flights in the South Island are on the chopping block due to what is has been described as 'out of control' costs. Sounds Air will soon can its flights from Blenheim to Christchurch and Christchurch to Wanaka. It comes after the airline cancelled its services from Wellington to Taupo and Wellington to Westport last December, and sold an aircraft. It has been seen as not just a blow to hopes of boosting tourism but also for healthcare and those needing treatment at Christchurch Hospital. Tess Brunton reports.
It's Wills Week and a Taupo mum and her 13-year-old son have created a list of wishes to help families have those difficult conversations before it's too late.
Contingency measures drawn up by concerned Taupo Hospital clinicians show plans to move patients to Rotorua Hospital if staff shortages forced Taupo's clinic to close. The hospital, which serves a population of 40,000 people in the tourist region, has struggled to attract enough senior doctors to fill its roster. This forced the hand of workers to plan for the worst. Reporter Jimmy Ellingham obtained a copy of the Escalation and Closure Plan for Taupo Hospital and spoke to Melissa Chan-Green.

Talks about a major update to a 15 year old agreement between Taupō's council and the region's largest landowners have sparked controversy. The 2009 Joint Management Agreement between the district council and Ngāti Tūwharetoa is being workshopped, and a draft agreement has been presented to the public. Critics argue that no public mandate has been issued, and that ‘Treaty principles' are embedding ‘co-governance' directly into council operations. Mayor David Trewavas told Mike Hosking the agreement has absolutely nothing to do with co-governance, and is instead about protecting Lake Taupō. He says that when people actually look at and understand the deal, they'll understand it's about protecting the lake and ensuring it remains one of the cleanest in the world. “It's just all about the lake, nothing to do with co-governance at all.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kiwi Supercars driver Matt Payne has had a dream start to the season. He's been racing under Grove and Penrite, and has already racked up three wins for the season. It's had fans and former drivers raving about his prospects as a future champion and considering he's currently sitting third on the overall ladder, he'll be hoping it's the very near future. Two of his wins so far came in the same weekend, on the home track at Taupo. “I think that was a pretty special weekend for, for all of us,” Payne told Hosking. “Y'know, two wins in one weekend is pretty cool, and I think for me, winning at home, especially in front of the New Zealand crowd, it couldn't have been any better.” His other win came in Tasmania, Payne moving from his starting position in 10th to claim the victory. “That was a pretty special race,” he said. “Just how everything played out, as the tyres were going away, and just how close it was at the end... it definitely stayed with me for a while.” “Pretty awesome race.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
