New Zealand Wrap Inside Supercars wraps up the New Zealand swing with Tony Whitlock and James McCabe unpacking two weekends that delivered both spectacle and substance across Taupo and Christchurch. The headline out of Ruapuna was Broc Feeney's glowing assessment of the old school circuit, praising the revamped layout, tighter margins, and the return of real consequences when drivers pushed beyond the limit. With Supercars committing to Christchurch for at least three years, the pair explore how the Canterbury Car Club's planned upgrades from permanent garages to expanded safety infrastructure signal a long term future for the event. They also reflect on how the Kiwi fans once again elevated the atmosphere, turning Ruapuna into a genuine Supercars cauldron. Across the Tasman double, Tony and James break down the competitive picture as the championship tightens. Feeney leaves New Zealand with momentum and the points lead, while Brodie Kostecki, Matt Payne, and Cam Waters each showed flashes that hint at a wide open title fight. Passing was at a premium at Ruapuna, tyre life became a strategic weapon, and pit lane execution proved decisive all themes the team dives into as they assess who maximised the trip and who will be searching for answers before the series returns to Australia. It's a full, insightful wrap of a New Zealand campaign that reshaped the early season narrative and reminded everyone why 2026 is already one of the most compelling Supercars seasons in years. I note the whinging has started from EV owners as their fixed price deals for recharging their Nissan Leafs at home come to an end. Some claim the new deals will be 50% higher. How can you possibly be surprised? Did you think you would get away with it forever? For a while the more deluded lauded the road tax loophole, until it got closed as well. The power companies see EV owners as a new revenue source. As petrol may or may not become a commodity not worth bothering about, at least for cars, car dealers will be licking their lips that a product three and a half short weeks ago they couldn't shift for love nor money, may have a wait time as the desperados clamber in for something that unshackles them from the tyranny of oil. But equally if it becomes a “thing”, and it's way too early to say whether it is or not, but if it does, power companies will not believe their luck. An almost entirely new revenue stream, not just a whole new series of customers, but old customers paying way more now that they are hooked in. We must remember power prices are rising because of renewable investment and basic line maintenance. The Commerce Commission has allowed big increases for you and me to upgrade infrastructure so maybe the way to see an EV is not about the cost, although it is still cheaper. But it's more about the convenience and despite the doom merchants, we are no longer running out of power. In fact, in one of the countries more upbeat stories is we have seemingly transitioned, or will, pretty well in terms of base load and meeting ongoing, if not growing, demand. It's why Sri Lanka has turned the neon signs off and told office workers to kill the air conditioning – they don't have Clyde or the Taupo geothermal. They need oil. This won't be a moment for public transport. They've blown that. It's too unreliable. The current burst of patronage will vanish as quickly as it arrived. But EVs might be having their moment. Once you are in one you may not go back. That critical tipping point might have been provided by a war. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
"The weather could not have been a more idyllic. I was basking in the brilliance of Lake Taupō aboard the glorious replica steamboat, Ernest Kemp, as were several dozen guests from all over the world. Cruising the great lake for over 40 years, this gorgeous little vessel that accommodates 50 guests, began life in Kerikeri, named in honour of the last member of the Kemp family to live at Kemp House. A massive and damaging flood in the Kerikeri Inlet in 1981 prompted the sale of this shallow draught vessel, and Ernest Kemp began a new life feeling the lake's freshwater on its hull, a year later.: "For a complete change of pace, I was itching to rock some of Taupō's much-vaunted mountain bike trails. And they won't disappoint." Read Mike's full article here. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Greg Foran is back where I suspect he belongs, and likes. The former Air New Zealand boss, if you have missed it, is off to Kroger, which is America's second biggest grocer behind Walmart. I have never met a New Zealander who has worked in America that belongs in America more. It was evident from the first time I met him that he was American. You can spot them in their shirts and ties. They are conservative and yet impeccably pressed. He looked like he had starched himself getting out of bed each morning. The last time he was in here, his farewell interview, we talked off air about where now. He didn't say specifically, but I knew it was America. The bit he never explained, probably because he either couldn't for commercial reasons, or couldn't because he hadn't quite worked it out for himself, was what the hell he was ever doing back in New Zealand. I asked him any number of times in a sort of non-direct way, what on earth was it about a small airline at the bottom of the world that would drag you out of Walmart to come and run it? Possibly given he wasn't running Walmart, it was a job in which he was running something so his CV would show a Kroger in years to come that he was ready to be boss. At Walmart he lived in Arkansas and flew in private jets. In New Zealand he kept having to explain why the Wellington to Taupo plane never took off. The Covid thing must have been the nightmare from hell and it wasn't his fault. But even without it and the myriad of problems he faced, including the inexplicable cluster around engines that no airline anywhere seems to have encountered the way Air New Zealand has, you always got the impression he was either here for a short time, or it had all been a patriotic mistake driven by a laudable desire to return to home base and make some sort of contribution. But I can tell you this, of all the Air New Zealand CEO's I have known - business legend Ralph Norris, marketing genius Rob Fyfe, Prime Minister Chris Luxon and Greg Foran - no one looked less at home and more bewildered than Greg. Some people loved him because he was often at the airport checking their backs in, so work ethic was never the issue. The issue was Air New Zealand wasn't American. I bet you he has never been happier, or more relieved. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
