While the world witnessed Israel's genocide in Gaza, another war has been unfolding inside Israeli prisons. Thousands of Palestinian prisoners, including women and hundreds of children, are held under brutal conditions, many without charge or trial. In this episode, we speak with Palestinian lawyer Nadia Daqqa, one of the first attorneys to visit Palestinians abducted from Gaza after long months of enforced disappearance. Nadia shares chilling testimonies of starvation, torture, and medical neglect. She also unpacks Israel's policies that reinforce the illegal mass detention of Palestinians, revealing another war taking place quietly behind prison bars. What explains the endless wrangling over a term coined by Raphael Lemkin to define the crime of national destruction, even as Israeli officials openly express their intent to make Gaza uninhabitable? In this episode, scholars Dirk Moses and Sonia Boulos argue that the search for answers must begin in 1948. Support Our Cause at https://libri-vox.org/donateJefferies' novel can be seen as an early example of "post-apocalyptic fiction." After some sudden and unspecified catastrophe has depopulated England, the countryside reverts to nature, and the few survivors to a quasi-medieval way of life. The first part of the book, "The Relapse into Barbarism", is the account by some later historian of the fall of civilisation and its consequences, with a loving description of nature reclaiming England. The second part, "Wild England", is an adventure set many years later in the wild landscape and society. The book is not without its flaws (notably the abrupt and unsatisfying ending) but is redeemed by the quality of the writing, particularly the unnervingly prophetic descriptions of the post-apocalyptic city and countryside. There was once a dream that was America. In that dream, the founders envisaged a perfect Union based on justice, domestic tranquility, general welfare, and the blessings of liberty on them and our posterity. It was a wild dream, a vivid dream, a dream not readily available in Europe riddled as it was with despots, kings, and an unhealthy political affiliation with the Catholic Church itself flailing on the whims of a corrupted hierarchy up to and including the Popes eager to fill their coffers with gold allowing them to live a life of luxury while the suffering peasants were expected to tithe their meager portions.

To hear more, visit wisdomofcrowds.live“ ‘Barbarism' is a word that keeps coming to my lips lately,” writes Damir Marusic in a brilliant new article this week. Barbarism seems to be the only real word that describes what comes after the liberal international order. But Damir isn't pointing to the supposed barbarism of our enemies. His article points to the ways that we in the West — and in the United States — are becoming coarser and more egocentric. Like the poet said, barbarism begins at home. Shadi Hamid interrogates Damir about his piece in Socratic fashion. Is Damir maybe making a moral equivalence between the Trumpist Right and the hapless Left? While it's true that the Left isn't very effective, it can hardly be said to be barbaric. In the course of his answer, Damir discusses Alligator Alcatraz as the symbol of new American barbarism: kind of silly, but also, openly cruel. For Damir, barbarism isn't just Nazism; it is the strong turn toward selfishness and narcissism that has taken place since the middle of the twentieth century. And he has a theory of why the turn took place: secularization and the death of God. On this point, Shadi agrees, but he still has questions. Is it political structures or innate nature that make us turn toward evil? If it is the former, how can politics help in this moment to keep us from becoming truly barbaric? It is a timely and intense conversation. In our bonus section for paid subscribers, Damir and Shadi discuss why “war is a force that gives us meaning”; Shadi compares violence to orgasms; Damir's Calvinist sympathies make an appearance; Damir opposes “vulgar Nietzscheanism” with a “moral law” forged out of our “broken humanity”; Shadi wonders if Damir has finally become a moralist; can morality survive Pax Americana?; Gaza and barbarism; Christopher Hitchens and faith; the origin of the phrase, “Beyond the pale”; and more!Required Reading:* Damir, “Back to Barbarism” (WoC).* Thérèse Delpech, Savage Century: Back to Barbarism (Amazon). * Curzio Malaparte, Kaputt (Amazon). * Friedrich Nietzsche, “The Parable of the Madman” (Fordham University). In this episode, we talk about Thorstein Veblen's Theory of the Leisure Class. In it, he argues that modern culture is basically continuous with that of predatory barbarism, except that it is drunk on the extreme surplus produced by capitalism. Under these conditions, much of human activity becomes performative: consumption, leisure, and perhaps paradoxically enough even hustle culture are all forms of demonstrating one's superiority in a petty game of social esteem. We explore some of these paradoxes and discuss whether Veblen's analysis still rings fully true in the 21st century, but to be honest we mostly just pour vitriol and scorn upon the extremely embarrassing members of our own ruling class. We can be petty, too!leftofphilosophy.comReferences:Thorstein Veblen, The Theory of the Leisure Class (New York: Oxford University Press, 2007).Bernard Rosenberg, “Veblen and Marx”, Social Research 15:1 (1948): 99-117.Music:“Vintage Memories” by Schematist | schematist.bandcamp.com“My Space” by Overu | https://get.slip.stream/KqmvAN

Can history be understood scientifically? Modern science shows us that all realms of nature are dictated by objective laws—from quantum physics to molecular biology. But most mainstream historians refuse to admit that the same is true about human society. As Marx famously said: “Men make their own history, but they do not make it as they please.” History isn't merely driven by the free will of great individuals. Nor is it a senseless mess, as postmodernist thinkers would have you believe. The economic structure of a given society sets the stage for historical development. Great changes in politics and culture are driven by changes in production. By studying this relation, we can develop the tools we need to leave our own mark on history. Therefore, we are proud to release a presentation by Marcus Katryniuk, an activist of the RCP, on the Materialist Conception of History, and how workers and youth can make history.Further Reading:What is Historical Materialism?Civilization, Barbarism, and the Marxist View of History

We also talk about the latest United Nations Conference of Parties on the climate crisis (COP28). Held in a notorious petrostate, the United Arab Emirates, 200 countries agreed to begin a phase out of fossil fuels by 2050. also raises the issue of climate activists being targeted with lawsuits, RICO charges and jail time in the Global North, while land and climate defenders in the Global South face torture and murder. Nine days ago, we learned of the horrific Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel, resulting in more than 13,000 Israeli deaths and thousands of injuries. Much of the world was rightly horrified. But very quickly we saw scores of protests breaking out on college campuses and in major cities around the world. But the protests do not condemn Hamas. Instead, they blame Israel for these atrocities because of its allegedly repressive policies against Palestinians. But it gets worse. Black Lives Matter and other activists created a logo of a paraglider - the method Hamas terrorists used to fly into Israel to slaughter families and people attending a concert in the desert - to symbolize their ideology. So these people are clearly celebrating Hamas and the killing of Jews. How rampant is this anti-Semitism and why do so many people feel so comfortable spewing their hatred?Today, Sara is joined by Liora Rez of StopAntiSemitism.org to chronicle how devastating the Hamas attacks are to Jewish people throughout the world, the brazen hatred of Jews we're seeing at home and abroad, and the truth that many people in this world clearly need to learn. Please visit our great sponsors:Allegiance Goldhttps://protectwithsara.comClick or Call 877-702-7272 to tell them Sara sent you and get $5,000 of free silver on a qualifying purchase. In this special double episode, Charlie reacts to the shocking and horrifying events in Israel, where a surprise attack by Hamas has claimed nearly a thousand innocent lives, taken a hundred hostages, and driven Israel to declare its first war in half a century. Charlie explains what happened, what will happen next, and what the best posture for America is amid the chaos.
