Recorded live at the Mifa exhibits during the Annecy Festival, this behind-the-scenes tutorial features Toon Boom expert Alexander Matthews walking me through the ins and outs of Storyboard Pro. Originally intended just for my animation team on The Arbiters, the insights were too good not to share. From efficient shot planning to smart panel workflows, Alexander answers my feature-specific questions in ways that apply universally to animators, directors, and storyboard artists alike. He also offers a quick look at Harmony and Toon Boom's broader suite of tools.Note: Audio is a bit rough due to the festival environment, but the value is absolutely worth it.

St. Bernard of Claivaux (1090 - 1153 AD) was the founder of the Cistercians, a reform order of the Benedictines, and was one of the Church's true mystics. He opposed the “intentionalism” of the heretic Peter Abelard with his quip: “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” He also opposed an anti-pope, corrected a king, brokered peace in Europe, and had to nuance the doctrine of “just war” in the face of Christian losses in the Crusades. May 18th, 2025 | Are You An Arbiter or Distributor of Grace? | Jonah 4Jonah's story could've ended neatly in chapter 3—rebellion, repentance, revival. But instead, we get chapter 4: a prophet angry at God, grace given to enemies, and a question that never gets answered. In this powerful conclusion to our Jonah series, Pastor Todd Kaunitz walks us through the unsettling ending of Jonah's journey and asks a question that hits close to home: Are you an arbiter of grace or a distributor of grace?Jonah wanted justice for Nineveh, not mercy. He was glad to receive grace for himself but furious when it was extended to people he despised. Sound familiar? Through this message, we're challenged to examine our own hearts—how we view our enemies, our comfort, and God's mission.Reflection Questions:Am I withholding grace from someone in my life?Do I secretly want people who've hurt me to “get what they deserve”?Am I more upset by discomfort than by the reality of lost souls? In this season of life, do I look more like Jonah… or Jesus? This episode closes Jonah's story, but it might open a new chapter in yours. Today's crossword seemed (to at least one of our cohosts) to be slightly crunchier than the usual Sunday, thanks to clues like 3D, "Ci vediamo in giro!" , CIAO; 70A, Pauperism, so to speak, RAGS (um, ok); and 61D, Arbiters of taste, CONNOISSEURS (or as they are known nowadays, influencers). To be clear, we are not complaining: we like a little crunch in our cereal and our crossword grids, and today's puzzle had just the right amount.Show note imagery: Groucho Marx - he didn't invent absurdist comedy, but he definitely perfected it.We love feedback! In this vlog, I take you behind the scenes as we gear up for big meetings in May for The Arbiters. From refining the script to building out detailed storyboards and concept art, we're practicing daily to ensure everything is sharp for the pitch. I also talk through our planning for the Annecy Film Festival—including travel logistics—and why I've paused work on my filmmaking book (temporarily!) to prioritize The Arbiters.Plus, I share insights from my manifesting journal now that I'm halfway through the process, reflect on lessons from watching the Grammys Rewind series, and recap my Boston trip for Emerson College's film fest and men's soccer alumni event. It's a packed update on balancing the creative grind, personal growth, and staying grounded in the journey.

This year feels like a major transition—for all of us. In this vlog, I reflect on how I'm navigating change through creative work, personal rituals, and a few powerful tools that have grounded me lately: therapy, yoga, journaling for manifestation, and Phil Stutz's True and False Magic. I open up about the big deadlines ahead for The Arbiters, reviving my filmmaking how-to book after a ghostwriting setback, and the poetic freedom I'm exploring for my next novel. Plus: thoughts on burnout, the cost of always seeking “cheaper” solutions (including over-relying on AI), and why rest might be more revolutionary than we think.

This week has been a whirlwind! I worked at the Grammys, which was an amazing experience, I've been continuing on with The Arbiters—recutting our proof-of-concept trailer to better reflect the updated script, continuing outreach, and… an actor I'd love to have in the film has shown interest! On top of that, I'm submitting to Anime Expo and planning other events to get The Arbiters in front of more eyes. And in the midst of all this, I'm making time to be healthier—more yoga, better habits, and trying to keep balance while chasing big goals.Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe! Inspired by A Course in Miracles, this episode explores the profound idea that what you withhold from love is ultimately given to fear. I discuss why this concept matters and how embracing love over fear can reshape your relationships, decisions, and mindset. Learn how to identify when fear is holding you back and how choosing love can lead to a more fulfilling and courageous life. Here are some practical examples of artists withholding from love and instead giving to fear: 1. Not Sharing Their Work Due to Fear of Judgment • Example: An artist spends years perfecting a painting, song, or script but never releases it because they fear criticism. Instead of embracing the love of creation and sharing their vision, they let fear keep their art locked away. 2. Choosing Trends Over Authenticity • Example: A filmmaker has a unique story to tell but chooses to follow mainstream trends out of fear their original idea won't sell. Instead of creating from love and passion, they operate from fear of financial failure or industry rejection. 3. Perfectionism Leading to Creative Paralysis • Example: A writer keeps rewriting the same script for years, believing it's never good enough. Instead of trusting the process and loving the growth that comes with each iteration, they allow fear of imperfection to stall progress. 4. Compromising Vision for Commercial Success • Example: A musician shifts their style to fit what's currently popular, despite their heart pulling them in a different direction. Instead of expressing themselves authentically, they let fear of irrelevance dictate their work. 5. Avoiding Risks That Could Lead to Breakthroughs • Example: A director wants to experiment with a bold new animation technique (e.g., The Arbiters pushing anime forward) but hesitates because no one else is doing it. Fear of failure outweighs the love of innovation. 6. Sabotaging Opportunities Due to Self-Doubt • Example: A photographer gets an offer to showcase their work in a major gallery but turns it down, convinced they aren't “ready.” Fear of exposure and potential failure overrides the love of their craft and opportunity. 7. Withholding Praise from Fellow Artists • Example: A producer sees a peer succeeding but doesn't acknowledge or celebrate them out of jealousy or insecurity. Instead of supporting and collaborating from a place of love, they let fear of comparison create distance. Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe! Prince Harry's decision to settle with News Group Newspapers may have been the smart move, according to one expert. He'd been suing the group - which publishes the Sun and the now defunct News of the World - alleging they obtained information about him by illegal means, over 15 years. The settlement is reportedly over $20 million. Royal correspondent Victoria Arbiter says settling will save a headache. "At the end of the day, the UK justice system is prohibitively expensive - the cost would have been absolutely eye-watering. So thankfully, this has given him the closure that he so longer for." From May 12, 2023: Earlier this year, Brian Fishman published a fantastic paper with Brookings thinking through how technology platforms grapple with terrorism and extremism, and how any reform to Section 230 must allow those platforms space to continue doing that work. That's the short description, but the paper is really about so much more—about how the work of content moderation actually takes place, how contemporary analyses of the harms of social media fail to address the history of how platforms addressed Islamist terror, and how we should understand “the original sin of the internet.” For this episode of Arbiters of Truth, our occasional series on the information ecosystem, Lawfare Senior Editor Quinta Jurecic sat down to talk with Brian about his work. Brian is the cofounder of Cinder, a software platform for the kind of trust and safety work we describe here, and he was formerly a policy director at Meta, where he led the company's work on dangerous individuals and organizations. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. From April 14, 2023: Over the past few years, TikTok has become a uniquely polarizing social media platform. On the one hand, millions of users, especially those in their teens and twenties, love the app. On the other hand, the government is concerned that TikTok's vulnerability to pressure from the Chinese Communist Party makes it a serious national security threat. There's even talk of banning the app altogether. But would that be legal? In particular, does the First Amendment allow the government to ban an application that's used by millions to communicate every day?On this episode of Arbiters of Truth, our series on the information ecosystem, Matt Perault, director of the Center on Technology Policy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Alan Z. Rozenshtein, Lawfare Senior Editor and Associate Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota, spoke with Ramya Krishnan, a staff attorney at the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, and Mary-Rose Papendrea, the Samuel Ashe Distinguished Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of North Carolina School of Law, to think through the legal and policy implications of a TikTok ban.To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. We talk about the pitching process, what a Pitch Deck is, the difference between a teaser and a trailer, and all the things he does as a director of his first animated feature, We go back in time to the time of Saturday morning cartoons and how Phil was reared on Hey Arnold and Captain Planet among other shows. Also he talks about how a course in editing led him to "reverse engineer" his way into directing and writing. From April 26, 2023: If someone lies about you, you can usually sue them for defamation. But what if that someone is ChatGPT? Already in Australia, the mayor of a town outside Melbourne has threatened to sue OpenAI because ChatGPT falsely named him a guilty party in a bribery scandal. Could that happen in America? Does our libel law allow that? What does it even mean for a large language model to act with "malice"? Does the First Amendment put any limits on the ability to hold these models, and the companies that make them, accountable for false statements they make? And what's the best way to deal with this problem: private lawsuits or government regulation? On this episode of Arbiters of Truth, our series on the information ecosystem, Alan Rozenshtein, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota and Senior Editor at Lawfare, discussed these questions with First Amendment expert Eugene Volokh, Professor of Law at UCLA and the author of a draft paper entitled "Large Libel Models.”Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. From April 1, 2021: This week on Arbiters of Truth, the Lawfare Podcast's miniseries on our online information ecosystem, Evelyn Douek and Quinta Jurecic spoke with Issie Lapowsky, a senior reporter at the tech journalism publication Protocol. They discussed last week's hearing before the House Energy and Commerce Committee with the CEOs of Facebook, Google and Twitter—the first time the companies had been called to testify on the Hill after the Capitol riot, which focused public attention on the content moderation policies of tech platforms when it comes to domestic extremism. The hearing produced some interesting takeaways, but also a lot of moments when the CEOs were awkwardly forced to answer complicated questions with a simple "yes" or "no" answer. They also discussed Issie's reporting on how tech companies have struggled to figure out how to address far-right extremism in the United States as opposed to Islamist extremism. And they talked about Section 230 reform and what it's like reporting on the tech space. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. From August 20, 2020: This week on Lawfare's Arbiters of Truth series on disinformation, Evelyn Douek and Quinta Jurecic spoke with Alex Stamos, the director of the Stanford Internet Observatory and former chief security officer of Yahoo and Facebook. Alex has appeared on the podcast before, but this time, they discussed a new coalition he helped set up called the Election Integrity Partnership—a coalition focused on detecting and mitigating attempts to limit voting or delegitimize election results. Disinformation and misinformation around the U.S. presidential election has already started popping up online, and it's only going to increase as November draws closer. The coalition aims to counter this in real time. So how will it actually work? They also asked Alex for his hot takes on TikTok—the popular video sharing platform facing pressure over concern about influence from the Chinese government. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare.
