Everyone loves a good evolutionary puzzle. Why do we have appendices? Why do we dream? Why do we blush? At first glance, memory would not be in this category. It's clearly useful to remember stuff, after all—to know where to find food, to remember your mistakes so you don't repeat them, to recall who's friendly and who's fierce. In fact, though, certain aspects of memory—when you hold them up to the light—turn out to be quite puzzling indeed. My guests today are Dr. Ali Boyle and Dr. Johannes Mahr. Ali is a philosopher at the London School of Economics (LSE); Johannes is a philosopher at York University, in Toronto. Both have written extensively about the functions of memory, and, in particular, about the functions of episodic memory—that capacity for calling up specific events and experiences from our own lives.  Here, Ali, Johannes and I lay out the textbook taxonomy of memory, and discuss how episodic memory has drawn the lion's share of philosophical interest. We pick apart the relationship between episodic memory and another major type of long-term memory, semantic memory. We sketch a range of different accounts of the evolved functions of episodic memory, including Johannes's proposal that episodic memory serves communication and Ali's proposal that it fuels semantic memory. And, finally, we consider what this all means for our understanding of memory in children and in animals. Hafsah bint Umar رضي الله عنهم (S11) In the case of a revocable divorce; only the husband can take back the woman during the iddah (Surah 2:228) However, after the iddah, if the husband wants the woman back, he must go through the entire marriage procedure again - I.e Nikkah, Mahr etc. Witness are needed when calling for a divorce or when calling the woman back - not having any witnesses means you have left the sunnah, however the divorce is still valid. The sunnah time to call for divorce should be when the woman is not menstruating, and when the man has not been intimate with her - a mercy from Allah (s.w.t) - so as to not be rash and act on emotion. Just as our Messenger's ﷺ love increased for Abdullah Ibn Um Mukhtoom رضي الله عنه after the Surah Abasa situation, his ﷺ love increased for Hafsah رضي الله عنها when he took her back after divorcing her. She along with Aisha رضي الله عنهم were the ones to look after our Messenger ﷺ when he was ill at the end of his life. Although Aisha and Hafsah رضي الله عنهم were young when the greatest of creation ﷺ left this world - Allah (s.w.t) still gave them the status of being mothers… of the believers! Although they had no biological children, they have us - billions in number.

It's reasonable to assume that demarcate inspired the noun demarcation—many a noun has been formed by adding the suffix -ion to an existing verb. We can ultimately thank Spanish for both: the Spanish noun demarcación (from demarcar, "to delimit") was used in 1493 to name a meridian dividing New World territory between Spain and Portugal.
