On Monday 23rd June, community members rallied at Coburg Town Hall to save the social worker position at Merri-bek libraries. In February, Merribek Council ended the successful 2-year pilot program for a permanent social worker in the library, and had refused to commit to the program. The protest called on the council to fund a full time in-house library social worker in this time of multiple compounding crises, recognising that libraries are the heart of our communities. On today's program, I bring you audio from that rally, starting with the rally's chairperson, Yasmin Shamsili.

When it comes to upgrading your home to be more energy efficient or going all-electric, it turns out one of the most powerful motivators isn't advertising, policy, or even rebates. It's a conversation with someone we trust. But with over 11 million homes in Australia needing some kind of energy upgrade, how do we spark millions of those personal conversations? One answer is to go local. Merri-bek City Council in Melbourne has become a leader in grassroots energy transition, taking a hands-on, human-centred approach to helping residents electrify their homes and cut emissions. They're a great example of what's possible when local government meets the community where they're at, literally. Donna Luckman, Merri-bek Council's Zero Carbon Campaigns Lead and winner of the Energy Efficiency Council's Energy Management Champion Award, outlines how the council supports residents with practical, locally focused programs. And Sarah Hussein, a community outreach officer embedded in Merri-bek's culturally diverse neighbourhoods, explains how she's helps households navigate the energy transition, from understanding options to taking action.

The Labor government continues to provide economic, diplomatic and military support to Israel's genocide in Gaza and now Iran. We know that they signed a $917 million dollar deal with Israeli weapons company Elbit systems early last year. We know that the Heat Treatment Australia facility in Campbellfield provides crucial treatment for components of F-35 Joint Strike fighters.  Now, more than ever, we need to put pressure on our own politicians to end all military exports to Israel and cut all diplomatic and economic ties. In Melbourne's inner city local municipality of Merri-bek, a group of committed Free Palestine activists organised a rally against sitting Labor MP, Peter Khalil, who was recently been promoted as Assistant Minister for Defence. The rally took place on the cold winter's night of Friday June 13th and today's episode of Accent of Women brings you some speeches from that rally. The Rally chair is Bella Beiraghi of students for Palestine and the first speaker is Samantha Ratnam from the Australian Greens who challenged Peter Khalil in the once safe Labor seat of Wills, turning it into one of the most marginal seats in the state of Victoria.

There's an upcoming election in Australia, and housing will be a big issue. Show host Gene Tunny chats with Fusion Party candidate Owen Miller about Fusion's sweeping housing policy proposals. Topics include eliminating negative gearing, taxing capital gains on owner-occupied homes, and increasing public housing. They also discuss ideas like charter cities, high-speed rail, and a government-run real estate platform. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for Gene, please email him at contact@economicsexplored.com.About Owen MillerOwen Miller grew up in Sydney and has long been interested in science fiction, ultimately leading to the study of mechatronics (robotics & control systems) and computer science at the University of Sydney. After working in different software roles in Sydney and even dealing Blackjack for some months, Owen moved to Seattle to work on the recommender systems at Amazon. Owen later moved to New York and was involved in smaller startups, especially in hospitality. Although the start-ups didn't take off, this rite of passage involved less shielding from the real world and helped clarify the roles of the market and the state in the provision of essential aspects of life, such as software and social cooperation. In 2020, Owen started the Non-Human Party; a vision for an opt-in online nationality that would optimise the existence of robots and animals, in addition to humans.Upon moving to Melbourne in 2022, Owen became the Registered Officer of Fusion, with the hope of enabling Australia to reach its full potential as a wealthy, sustainable and harmonious paradise; a beacon for the rest of the world. He currently serves as Fusion's Convenor.Owen was Fusion's candidate for the 2023 Aston federal by-election.In 2024, he ran as a candidate for local council in Merri-bek (for the Bulleke-Bek ward). He will again be running as a federal candidate in 2025, this time in Wills. In 2024, Spotify classified Owen as belonging to the top 0.05% of Kylie Minogue fans.Source: https://www.fusionparty.org.au/owen_millerTimestampsIntroduction (0:00)Relationship Between Fusion Party and Pirate Party (3:07)Fusion Party's Housing Policy Goals (4:04)Comparisons with Other Countries and Tax Policy (6:19)Immigration and Housing Policy (9:09)Owner-Occupier Capital Gains Tax and Land Tax (12:53)Renter's Rights and Social Housing (17:16)Supply-Side Housing Policies (27:49)Liberté Account and Open Source Real Estate Listings (38:24)Final Thoughts and Wrap-Up (51:02)TakeawaysTax reform is central to Fusion's housing strategy — They propose reducing capital gains tax discounts and phasing in land tax for all properties, including owner-occupied homes.Fusion supports a major investment in social housing — Advocating a jump from 3.2% to 10% of housing stock as public housing.Tenant rights need an upgrade — Fusion argues for banning no-fault evictions and establishing minimum standards like clean air and energy efficiency.Livret A accounts could revolutionize infrastructure funding — A French-style citizen savings bond to fund high-speed rail and public housing projects.Urban sprawl isn't the answer — Fusion favors infill development and transport-driven decentralization over expanding city fringes.Links relevant to the conversationFusion's housing policy:https://www.fusionparty.org.au/housing_as_a_homeLumo Coffee promotion10% of Lumo Coffee's Seriously Healthy Organic Coffee.Website: https://www.lumocoffee.com/10EXPLOREDPromo code: 10EXPLORED Full transcripts are available a few days after the episode is first published at www.economicsexplored.com.

In this thought-provoking conversation with Freya Mathews, we delved into the depths of panpsychism, nature, and eco-philosophy. Freya illuminated the interconnectedness of these ideas, emphasizing how our current ecological crisis demands a profound reevaluation of the very assumptions that gave rise to modernity. Panpsychism, the view that consciousness is a fundamental aspect of the universe, became a central theme. Freya articulated how recognizing the sentience within all things challenges the human-centric perspective that has led to environmental exploitation. She passionately argued that a shift towards an eco-philosophy rooted in panpsychism can help us cultivate a more respectful and reciprocal relationship with the natural world. As we explored these concepts, it became clear that responding to our ecological challenges requires more than just surface-level solutions. Freya urged us to rethink our place in the world, to question the Cartesian dualism that separates mind from matter, and to embrace a holistic understanding of existence. In this enlightening conversation, Freya Matthews inspired a call to action—to not only address the symptoms of our environmental crisis but to fundamentally transform our worldview, recognizing the intrinsic value and agency of all life forms on this planet. Freya Mathews is Emeritus Professor of Environmental Philosophy at Latrobe University. Her books include The Ecological Self (1991, 2021), Ecology and Democracy (editor) (1996), For Love of Matter: a Contemporary Panpsychism(2003), Journey to the Source of the Merri (2003), Reinhabiting Reality: towards a Recovery of Culture(2005), Ardea: a philosophical novella (2016), Without Animals Life is not Worth Living (2016) and The Dao of Civilization: a Letter to China (2023). She is the author of over a hundred essays, chapters and articles in the area of ecological philosophy. Her current special interests are in ecological civilization; indigenous (Australian and Chinese) perspectives on “regenerativity” and how these perspectives may be adapted to the context of contemporary global society; panpsychism and the critique of the metaphysics of modernity; and conservation ethics. In addition to her research activities she helps to care for a private conservation reserve in northern Victoria. She is a fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. In early ‘80s California, a new kind of music was brewing that blended the psychedelic sounds of the '60s with the modern day post-punk ethos. This week, hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot reflect on the Paisley Underground movement. They'll discuss the prominent bands like The Bangles, explore what made the scene so special and explain its impact on indie rock. Jim and Greg will also look back at the 1964 hit by The Shangri-Las, "Leader of the Pack," almost 60 years later. Plus, they'll review the new record from The Hives. First comes a DM slide; then, comes marriage. RBB “She Knows What She Wants” Claire Baltes joins Fallon this week to discuss her West Coast winter wedding and hybrid indoor-outdoor venue. As Fallon quickly tells Claire, any bride gambling with the weather should have a rain plan and they should l-o-v-e that rain plan. The duo also get into all things cake, the song Claire and her father will inevitably perform at the reception, and the case for designing two floor plans on opposite budget spectrums. Then, Randi Bushell — CEO of Merri (and our first expert requested by an RBB!) — joins the conversation to show Claire how she can bring her vision to life, with the help of vendors and a 3D platform.
