Dating in today's world is full of questions: everything from "should I even date this person" to "how do we date without getting our hearts broken" to "when should we get engaged?" With all kinds of advice from friends, family, and media giving confusing or even conflicting messages, we are often left wanting a guide in navigating romance. God Himself designed romance, and His Word is a simple, although challenging, guide for how to find love and navigate the mystery of romance. Check out our third installment of the "Before I Do" series where we take a look at Jesus' words to us and how it relates to our love lives.
We all have an innate desire to be satisfied, but what happens when we try to fill that need with love that doesn't fill? Love, sex, and dating can be challenges for young adults when we try to find our own path to satisfaction. This is nothing new, as Jesus actually met a woman who was living the same way with unhealthy relationships 2000 years ago. Join us for our second talk in the Before I Do series, as we learn the dangers of dating thirsty and the satisfaction that comes from knowing God.

Not long ago, same-sex couples had to jump through endless hoops to make their relationships even close to legal. Happily, those days are over. But here's the rub: many gay and lesbian couples, accustomed to living off-grid, are so thrilled to have the benefits of marriage that they jump into it without fully considering the consequences. In Before I Do: A Legal Guide to Marriage, Gay and Otherwise (New Press, 2016), leading gay rights attorney Elizabeth F. Schwartz spells out the range of practical considerations any couple should address before tying the knot. She explains the rights married couples have--and those they do not. With cameos from some of the most prominent LGBTQ+ professionals, Schwartz explores all of the implications of marriage from name changes and getting a license to taxes, insurance, Social Security, and much more. Chapters on estate planning, pre- and post-nuptial agreements, and organizing finances make Before I Do a crucial handbook for anyone considering marriage--because, as Schwartz explains, just because you can get married does not mean you should. On this episode of Complicated Conversations, we are joined by New York Times bestselling author Sophie Cousens. She is the author of This Time Next Year and Just Haven't Met You Yet. We talk with her about Before I Do, her new novel that asks the question: what would you do if “the one that got away” turned up the night before your wedding?! We chat with Sophie about “mommy issues” and the way her heroine, Audrey, is affected by the choices her mother has made; why she thinks the one that got away or the “what if” love interest is so popular in fiction; how she came to understand Audrey, her complicated protagonist with a “heavy” soul; what is love and how her novel explores all the permutations of love, lust, and connection; why love is dominated by a scarcity mentality and whether you can have more than one true love; who is worthy of love; and, of course, how the stars and astrology factor into all this!
In today's episode, Maggie joins rom com author Sophie Cousens to chat all about her new book 'Before I Do.' Sophie also shares the cocktail that MUST be paired alongside 'Before I Do' as well as a few songs that remind her of the book. Interested in hearing more from Sophie? The pandemic hasn’t forced singles into love lockdown mode as statistics indicate that more people are turning to dating apps in 2021. Although the virtual environment offers seemingly infinite options, more isn’t always better and doesn’t necessarily increase chances for a love match. On this episode of On Her Terms Defined, couples therapist Olivia L. Baylor highlights considerations and guidance for those looking to avoid dating drama once and for all! We discuss why dating is so hard, how to set expectations, the benefits of couples therapy/counseling and more!SPECIAL NOTESAvoid using the terms “mentally disabled,” “mentally handicapped,” or “mentally ill.” It is appropriate to say that someone “has a mental illness.” It can also be appropriate to say “mental health condition,” since many people who deal with mental health concerns may not have a formal diagnosis or a full-fledged illness.Therapists recognize that gift giving is customary and a matter of respect for some cultures. When you're "mom," intimacy can easily fall by the wayside. Too many people need you, you don't feel sexy, and if one more person touches you, you just might lose it! Most marriages and partnerships experience challenges keeping the passion alive over the years, and especially in parenthood. A healthy sex life is important to healthy intimate relationships, however; so, what can you do to reignite the flame, or keep it burning, when motherhood feels like it's taking over? I'm talking with therapist and author of "Before I Do," Olivia Baylor, LCPC (http://www.LifeRevisions.com), about how to redefine intimacy and connection, identify your physical and emotional needs, and help yourself and your partner get those needs met to keep the sexual fires burning and your relationships strong and flourishing! (Parents: Because of the "intimate" nature of today's episode, you may wish to keep the kids away as you listen!)
