"I'm a fan of Bridget Jones.... That I share that with so many people is a really cool thing," Renée Zellweger told Newsweek's Parting Shot in an exclusive interview. Nearly 24 years ago, the movie starring Zellweger as that young, single, British woman who started a diary was released. Its protagonist subsequently became a cultural phenomenon, a symbol of the modern British woman and an international example of liberated women everywhere. And the real-life woman who made her famous became so identifiable with the character from Helen Fielding's 1996 book Bridget Jones's Diary that it's almost impossible to imagine any other actor in the role. Now Zellweger is back with Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. Zellweger chats with Newsweek's H. Alan Scott about the legacy of Bridget Jones, what about her she relates to most, and why she's so protective of her. Bridget Jones author Helen Fielding is thrilled Renée Zellweger is back in the fourth installment of the series, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. "She's so like Bridget in that she is so warm and kind. There's a gentleness about her, and it's real. There's nothing made up about that," Fielding told Newsweek in early February. "Once Renée started playing the role, it all merged together," she said. "And from that point, I started writing Bridget as Renée, all mixed up together.... I write for her, seeing her, knowing what she does." In a bonus episode of the Parting Shot, Fielding spoke with Newsweek's H. Alan Scott about the legacy of Bridget Jones, her relationship with Zellweger, and whether she'll write another Bridget Jones book. In the final episode of our "marriage plot" season, we welcome fan favorite Dave Housley (author, most recently, of The Other Ones, and founding editor of Barrelhouse Magazine) to talk about a book that updated the 19th-century marriage plot novel for the 1990s: Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones's Diary. Dave had seen the movie version of the novel multiple times. But none of us had ever read the novel, which began as a jokey column in a London newspaper. We talk about the book's quirky voice, which of its jokes still land in 2024, and whether our culture's attitudes toward diet and body image have changed significantly in the last few decades. Plus: Dave's advice to Mike for marital harmony, and is author Matthew Quick part of the sprawling QAnon conspiracy? You can learn more about Dave, and his books, at his website: https://housleydave.com/. It would go on to make $116 million domestically and $364 million worldwide on a $42 million budget. Notting Hill was the second of several successful ventures between Grant and writer (and Mr. Bean creator) Richard Curtis, following 1994's Four Weddings and a Funeral and predating 2001's Bridget Jones's Diary (which Curtis adapted from Helen Fielding's enormously popular novel) and 2003's Love Actually. Tracey Emin, who has been a major figure in contemporary art for more than 25 years, has always been fascinated by the Norwegian master and, in 2021, she exhibited 25 of her own works alongside Munch's oils and watercolours at the Royal Academy. Helen Fielding, creator of the Bridget Jones novels and films, and Gill Hornby, author of the bestseller Miss Austen, join Sotheby's books specialist Kalika Sands and novelist Kate Mosse for a conversation in partnership with Sotheby's and held at Sotheby's in London about the enduring appeal of the 19th-century novelist Jane Austen. Fielding explains that when it came to turning her newspaper column about Bridget into a book, it seemed natural to borrow the tried and tested plot of Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Hornby reveals how she was inspired by real events when she created her fictional account of Austen's life. They discuss whether marriage or spinsterhood was the better option for a woman at that time, and debate exactly how we should interpret Austen's portrayal of Mrs Bennet, a figure desperate to marry off her four daughters, in Pride and Prejudice. Megan Agnew (news features writer at The Sunday Times) and Pravina Rudra (online editor and writer at the New Statesman) join Flixwatcher to review Megan's choice Bridget Jones's Diary. Bridget Jones's Diary (2001) is a British romantic comedy based on the novel of the same name by Helen Fielding. Directed by Sharon Maguire (Bridget Jones's Baby) with a script by Richard (Four Weddings and a Funeral) Curtis, Andrew (Pride and Prejudice (1995 TV series)) Davies, and Helen Fielding it stars Renée Zellweger as Bridget with Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleaver and Colin Firth as Mark Darcy, Bridget's love interests. It's New Year's Eve 1999, Bridget, 32, works in a publishing office, she is single, concerned with her weight, smoking and drinking and her attraction to her flirty boss Cleaver. At her parents annual New Year party she is introduced to the newly single Darcy, an old childhood friend who is now a handsome successful barrister. Comedy and a love triangle ensues as Bridget attempts to find true love. It is fair to Bridget Jones's represents a particular period in time, the fat shaming and casual sexual assault are very jarring and there is a lot of smoking. However, its legacy has endured due to Zellweger's charming and spirited Bridget and Grant and Firth basically playing themselves. Recommendability reflected this and Bridget Jones's Diary scores a very high 4.38 overall.   [supsystic-tables id=326]   Episode #313 Crew Links Thanks to the Episode #313 Crew of Megan Agnew (@MeganAgnew) and Pravina Rudra (@Pravina_R) You can find their website here https://t.co/gnfT7Mnb6H And at https://twitter.com/thetimes And at https://www.thetimes.co.uk/profile/megan-agnew?page=1     Please make sure you give them some love   More about Bridget Jones's Diary For more info on Bridget Jones's Diary can visit Bridget Jone's Diary IMDB page here or Bridget Jones's Diary Tomatoes page here.
