You can do a lot of good for your thyroid by simply changing your diet. And this is true of all thyroid conditions but especially if you have Hashimoto's. Eating the right foods can reduce inflammation and protect your thyroid gland. Or, it could do the exact opposite. It's for this reason that you need to understand which foods you should be eating and which you should be avoiding. When it comes to eating the wrong foods, here's the list to avoid: 1. Gluten. 2. Iodized salt. 3. Dairy products. 4. Soy. 5. Coffee. 6. Alcohol. 7. Processed foods. 8. Refined and processed sugars. 9. Industrial seed oils. 10. Certain vegetables. If you avoid these foods you can reduce thyroid gland inflammation and you may even be able to reduce your thyroid antibody levels. And worst case scenario? Even if you don't see an improvement in your thyroid, you will still experience benefits to your entire body. Statistically speaking, thyroid patients are more likely to be taking prescription medications for other problems like: - Depression - Anxiety - High blood pressure - High blood sugar - Weight gain - And more This is a problem by itself, but there's an even bigger one: The prescription medications used to treat these very conditions can actually make your thyroid even worse. So in a real sense, you may be taking medications for symptoms caused by your thyroid that circle back to make your thyroid function (and those very symptoms) even worse. Here's a list of medications that do this and what to do if you are taking any: Category 1. Medications that block T4 to T3 conversion. Category 2. Medications that block TSH production. Category 3. Medications that block thyroid hormone production from the thyroid gland. Category 4. Medications that block thyroid medication absorption. Don't want to deal with these issues? Your thyroid is very responsive to lifestyle changes and making these changes can improve your thyroid and help you get off these medications for good. Tired of feeling tired? Think that an endocrinologist is a solution to your problem? Think again. While it may seem intuitive that an endocrinologist, someone who has spent extra time studying about the endocrine system, has more specialized knowledge compared to a primary care provider, you'd be wrong. Endocrinologists do not have the specialized knowledge you think they do and tend to treat every single thyroid patient the same. Here are 5 reasons you will probably get better success with other doctors (plus which ones to see instead): Reason 1. They won't order the right tests. Reason 2. They all treat the same way. Reason 3. They don't have the specialized knowledge you think they do. Reason 4. They are set in their ways. Reason 5. You won't be able to convince them to change. Instead, here are the doctors that you will probably find better results with: - Doctors who specialize in functional medicine, anti-aging medicine, integrative medicine, natural medicine, and naturopaths. Don't feel discouraged by this information either because there are things that you can do right now to improve your thyroid. Want to learn more? If levothyroxine contains thyroid hormones and thyroid hormones control metabolism, shouldn't taking levothyroxine help with weight loss? You would think so, but that's not what happens in the real world. Instead, we have studies and anecdotal experience that show that patients taking levothyroxine experience no positive benefits to their weight. And worse than this, some actually experience weight GAIN. But how can this occur? It has everything to do with the type of thyroid hormone found in levothyroxine and what that thyroid hormone means for the body. Levothyroxine and Synthroid contain the thyroid hormone T4, which is inactive by itself. It's not until the body converts it into the active thyroid hormone T3 that it becomes usable. In a perfect world, everyone would be able to convert this hormone readily but that's not the world we live in. Which is why studies show that people who take other more active thyroid hormones do experience the weight loss you'd expect to see from levothyroxine (but don't). This doesn't mean levothyroxine is a bad medication, but it does mean that you shouldn't rely on it to help with weight loss. But you can get where you need to be by using a combination of thyroid hormones including: T4, T3, and T2. Recommendations for each (which mimics the healthy production of the thyroid gland) include: 80-100 mcg of T4 5-20 mcg of T3 100-200 mcg of T2 This combination of thyroid hormones is much more powerful than just taking levothyroxine alone and can help you lose weight with minimal effort. If this is the first time you're hearing about T2 then make sure to check out this video next: https://youtu.be/2cL641utwn4?si=CigxA1lu4JHgO-eo Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? BMI Calculator: https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/BMI/bmicalc.htm Does your weight tell you anything about your thyroid? Absolutely. In fact, because your thyroid regulates metabolism, being overweight is a flashing red light that indicates you may have a thyroid problem. This is even more true for people with existing issues like hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's. If that's the case, does being overweight tell you something about thyroid function? Yes! In fact, it's a great proxy measurement. This is one big reason that thyroid patients need to keep track of their weight. But it just so happens that the most common way they measure their weight happens to be the most inaccurate. If you have a thyroid problem, you need to be tracking your weight, but you need to use the right metrics. The most accurate include your BMI and your body measurements. These will give you more useful information than your weight on the scale and will actually help you in your journey to lose weight. Cytomel is a T3 only thyroid medication (the brand version of liothyronine) that is far more active than levothyroxine. Because it's so much more active, it also happens to be much better at helping thyroid patients with Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism lose weight. Before you run out and grab it, though, or try to switch medications, there are a few things you need to know. When using it you will want to keep an eye on certain lab tests including free t3, total t3, and reverse T3. In addition, you will also want to keep an eye on your basal body temperature and resting heart rate. Because of its power, it's important to keep an eye on these metrics to make sure you don't accidentally take too much. As far as dosing for weight loss is concerned, most patients do best taking a dose somewhere between 5 and 20 mcg per day. Instead of thinking as Cytomel as an alternative to levothyroxine, I think it's best thought of as a complementary option to it. Many thyroid patients see the best results when using both of these thyroid medications together. In addition, combining them with T2 will yield even better results. It's well known that your thyroid controls and regulates your weight through its impact on your metabolism. As a result, it's actually very common that patients with hypothyroidism end up gaining weight. But what patients usually don't understand is that if you gain weight from hypothyroidism, only about 10-15 pounds of that weight is directly from your thyroid. So why is it that some thyroid patients gain 30, 40, or even 50 pounds after their diagnosis? The cause for this extra weight gain has more to do with fluid than with actual fat! And because fluid levels can shift rapidly from day to day, they are often responsible for the wide shifts in weight that many thyroid patients experience. The 3 main causes of this rapid weight gain include: 1. Swelling, edema, and water weight. Hypothyroidism puts your body in a state where holding fluid is much more likely due to a condition called myxedema. This thyroid-specific condition results in the accumulation of GAGs and hyaluronic acid in your tissues which pulls in water from circulation resulting in swelling. 2. Constipation. Thyroid patients are also at risk for developing constipation and, if you aren't having a bowel movement every day, you can start to gain a lot of extra weight from stool. 3. Menstrual problems (hormone-related weight gain) Your thyroid not only regulates your metabolism, but it also has an impact on the menstrual cycle and progesterone. Thyroid dysfunction causes a decline in progesterone which can lead to an imbalance in estrogen:progesterone and excess weight gain from fluid. If you think the weight gain from your thyroid is more related to fat mass instead of water weight then you'll want to check out this information: https://www.restartmed.com/mistakes-hypothyroid-patients-make-when-trying-to-lose-weight/ Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? There's no question that changing the food that you eat every day can have a huge impact on your thyroid. For this reason, thyroid patients are always looking for the best diet. This search for the best diet leads a lot of them to the carnivore diet which promotes itself as one of the best diets available. But is it true and should you try it if you have thyroid problems? I'm going to argue no, for 4 main reasons: 1. Carbohydrates are needed for optimal thyroid function. Low-carb diets have been associated with low T3 levels and high reverse T3 levels, the same pattern seen in chronic illness. 2. Decreased carbohydrate intake increases sex hormone binding globulin and decreases the activity of sex hormones. Low-carb diets like carnivore can increase SHBG which can reduce free testosterone and free estradiol levels. This can then impact your thyroid. 3. There are better ways to lose weight. There's nothing magical about the carnivore diet that you can't get with other whole-food diets. 4. Low-carb diets cause sleep disturbances. Thyroid patients already have trouble with sleep and going low carb can make this problem even worse. If you want to see diets that I think are better than carnivore, check out this video: https://youtu.be/5seJiR5aCAM?si=-K7RVnP_Y58-L3pU You can also find more information and links to resources here: https://www.restartmed.com/carnivore-diet-thyroid-problems/ Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? Contrary to popular belief, you don't HAVE to take your thyroid medication first thing in the morning. In this video, I discuss some newer studies which show that taking thyroid medication in the evening can be just as effective (if not more effective) than taking in the morning. The takeaway here is that it doesn't really matter when you take your thyroid medication so long as you are taking it on an empty stomach. And to do that, all you need to do is make sure that you take it 2 hours after (or before) a meal. This leaves the stomach with 2 hours to empty which means that food will not interfere with its absorption. There are two ways to transition to taking your thyroid medication in the evening and I call them the non-skip approach and the skip approach. Most people have no problem taking their thyroid medication in the morning and then again in the evening but if you are sensitive then you may want to try the skip dose approach. Tired of not having good treatment options available for Hashimoto's? If so, I have some good news for you. Outside of traditional treatments like thyroid medication, there are some incredibly powerful natural options that have been shown in some research studies to help. One of the most potent is known as nigella sativa. I'm going to use nigella sativa and black seed oil almost interchangeably in this video but here's the difference: Nigella sativa is the plant that produces black seeds and black seeds can be cold pressed to produce black seed oil. The active ingredients in nigella sativa can be found in both black seeds and black seed oil so it's very likely that taking any of these 3 may provide benefits. One study that looked at nigella sativa found the following: 1. It had a pro-thyroid benefit and acted to help reduce TSH levels and increase free thyroid hormone levels. 2. It had a thyroid-antibody-reducing benefit and resulted in a decrease in TPO antibodies by almost 50%. 3. It may provide an anti-thyroid cancer benefit by reducing VEGF levels. These results are incredible and should perk the interest of just about every patient with Hashimoto's. The study referenced here used nigella sativa at 2 grams per day but I think black seed oil can provide superior benefits. Will consuming iodized salt help or hurt your thyroid? It depends on who you ask, but if you're asking me (and I'll assume that you are since you're watching this), my answer is that there are much better sourced of iodine and using iodized salt may cause more harm than good for most people. There are several reasons for this, but some of the main ones include: 1. The fact that iodine deficiency is not the problem that it once was. 2. The fact that there are better ways to get more stable doses of iodine. 3. The fact that excess salt consumption can cause other problems including high blood pressure. Assessing your iodine intake can be difficult but here are some key takeaways: 1. Avoid iodized salt and get your iodine intake from other sources. 2. Get as much iodine as you can from whole food. 3. Make up the difference, if needed, with an iodine supplement. 4. Try to get around 150 to 300 mcg of iodine each day. Vitamin B12 is incredibly important and many people simply don't get enough. And if you don't get enough then you'll end up with symptoms like fatigue, hair loss, weight gain, brain fog, depression, nerve problems, heart palpitations, and anemia. That's one problem. The other is that the form of B12 that most people use is the wrong one. Let's talk about the 4 most common forms of vitamin B12, which one(s) you should use, and which one(s) you should avoid: 1. Cyanocobalamin This is probably the worst form of vitamin B12 because it's synthetic (not natural), it comes attached to cyanide that must be metabolized, and it requires activation by the body before it can be used. 2. Adenosylcobalamin Adenosylcobalamin is one of two active forms of vitamin B12 and it's found primarily in the mitochondria where it helps create ATP for your cells. 3. Methylcobalamin Methylcobalamin is another active form of B12 which is found in the cytoplasm where it helps eliminate homocysteine. 4. Hydroxycobalamin Hydroxycobalamin is an intermediate form of B12 that is more stable than adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin but is not as active. Which form should you use? The best case scenario is to use the 3 active (and intermediate) forms all together so that even if you have a B12 metabolism genetic defect or polymorphism, your body can still utilize the B12. A combination of 1,000 mcg of methylcobalamin plus 1,000 mcg of adenosylcobalamin plus 1,000 mcg of hydroxycobalamin would be ideal. Not sure if you need to use B12? T2 thyroid hormone, also known as 3,5 diiodo-l-thyronine, is gaining a lot of attention among thyroid patients, and for good reason. As far as thyroid hormones are concerned, T2 plays a major role in regulating metabolism, cholesterol metabolism, and heat production, making it the ideal treatment if you are suffering from hypothyroid-related weight gain as well as high cholesterol. For this reason, many thyroid patients are wondering if it's right for them and they've been asking a lot of questions: Is T2 thyroid hormone safe? What are the side effects? And should I try it? Well, this video is going to shed light on all of those. First, we have no reason to suspect that T2 thyroid hormone is harmful because thyroid patients have been using it for over 70 years. This is because T2 is found in small amounts in NDT thyroid medications like Armour thyroid. What about side effects? Based on the over 10,000 thyroid patients who have used my T2 supplement, here's what I've found: Roughly 70-75% see some benefit when taking it. Roughly 5-10% see no discernable benefit and roughly 10-15% of patients see some minor negative side effect when taking it. So, should you give T2 a try? That depends on how you are feeling. If you are a thyroid patient who is currently feeling lousy despite taking your thyroid medication every day then, yeah, giving it a try may be a good idea. In addition, if you are a thyroid patient suffering from the inability to lose weight then that's another reason to consider giving it a try. My wife was able to use a combination of diet and lifestyle changes to get off of her T3 thyroid medication. She suffered from an unusual form of thyroid resistance due to an eating disorder in her teenage years which left her with metabolic damage, treatment-resistant depression, thyroid resistance, and the inability to lose weight. She had a complete resolution in her symptoms with the use of T3 thyroid medication (liothyronine) but didn't want to stay on her thyroid medication forever. To do this, she changed her lifestyle and her diet and, as a result, she was able to get off of her thyroid medication and remain symptom-free. Have you ever wondered why you don't hear much about thyroid hormone cream? Why is it that all other hormones exist in cream form including progesterone, testosterone, and estrogen? There really isn't a good reason because the truth is, thyroid hormone cream is probably the single best way to take thyroid medication. It just so happens that not all thyroid hormones are available in cream form... at least not yet. Here are 5 reasons that thyroid hormone creams beat out capsules and tablets: 1. Topical benefits where they are applied. Some studies suggest that topical thyroid hormone application may help regrow hair and help with wound healing. 2. More freedom in when and how you take it. If you take thyroid hormone in cream form then it can be taken at any time of the day and with any type of food. 3. Better bioavailability and absorption. Creams are roughly 2 to 2.5x stronger than oral versions of the exact same hormone. 4. Fewer side effects. Lower doses required mean fewer symptoms, especially heart palpitations. 5. Better symptom control. If your thyroid hormone is more effective then it will result in better symptom control. Right now, the only thyroid hormone available in cream form is T2 Cream which can be found here: https://www.restartmed.com/product/t2-cream/ But if we can show the pharmaceutical companies that there is interest in thyroid hormone creams more generally, then they will be more likely to start creating T4 and T3 creams. Using a scale is one of the biggest mistakes you can make as a thyroid patient trying to lose weight. Why? Because it doesn't accurately tell you how much fat you are losing or how much muscle you are gaining. And, for thyroid patients, this is a big problem because you should be trying to preserve muscle mass when you lose weight. How can you accurately measure fat loss? By using these metrics: 1. Body measurements. Because muscle mass is more dense than fat, even if you lose 5 pounds of fat and gain 5 pounds of muscle, your body will start to shrink (even though the scale will stay the same). 2. Weekly progress pictures (and a mirror). If you are losing weight while preserving muscle, your body will not only look slimmer, you will look healthier! When you are losing both muscle mass and fat mass simultaneously, you may take on a sickly-looking appearance. 3. Caliper testing. Caliper testing gives you an idea of how much fat is on your body but testing your skin thickness. 4. Weekly average (using a scale). If you want to use the scale, make sure to measure it daily and then take the average over the course of a week. This will give you a more accurate reading because it smooths out the day-to-day fluctuations from food volume, constipation, and water retention. Sugar alternatives are supposed to be safe and healthy low-calorie options that can be used in place of refined and processed sugar. Their great appeal is that they allow you to eat sweet things without gaining weight. But they don't actually work as well as you might think. Before we get into that, though, here are the best natural sugar alternatives for patients with Hashimoto's: 1. Monk fruit 2. Allulose 3. Stevia 4. Sugar alcohols But here's why I don't recommend them: 1. They are all heavily processed. 2. They aren't considered real food. 3. They aren't side effect-free. 4. And they aren't the miracle weight loss treatment you think they are. Instead, I recommend forgoing the natural options and using natural sweeteners like honey and maple syrup. If you aren't willing to accept the calories associated with these sweeteners, they you shouldn't eat their low-calorie alternatives because it will just make you crave more sweets in the future. Magnesium is incredibly important for thyroid function and, unfortunately, most thyroid patients aren't getting enough. This is for 3 main reasons: 1. Thyroid dysfunction increases magnesium breakdown and excretion. In other words, thyroid problems promote the elimination of magnesium from your body. 2. Stress increases magnesium usage. Because thyroid dysfunction makes you more susceptible to stress, thyroid patients have a higher demand for magnesium compared to the average population. 3. Most people aren't getting enough magnesium from their diet (about 80% or so). This has to do with the fact that magnesium is commonly found in plants and most thyroid patients are eating too much processed food. How can you fix this problem? By getting more magnesium from your diet and by taking additional magnesium supplements as needed. The three best magnesium supplements for hypothyroidism are... 1. Magnesium glycinate. 2. Magnesium citrate. 3. Magnesium l-threonate. Want to learn more about different forms of magnesium? Many patients with hypothyroidism struggle with high cholesterol due to how thyroid hormone regulates cholesterol metabolism. When thyroid hormone is low, cholesterol levels will increase. For this reason, many thyroid patients are placed on a statin to combat this high cholesterol. But is this necessary? Maybe in some situations, but definitely not all. Before you take a statin or another cholesterol-lowering medication, try these natural treatments first: 1. T3 containing thyroid medication like liothyronine or Cytomel. T3 is far more potent than levothyroxine at lowering cholesterol and can be considered if you are taking thyroid medication but still not seeing your numbers go down. 2. Eat to improve your thyroid. Instead of eating to lower cholesterol, eat to improve your thyroid. By boosting your thyroid with food you will get benefits on both your weight and cholesterol at the same time. 3. Glucomannan. Glucomannan is a soluble dietary fiber that may help lower cholesterol by up to 10%. 4. Berberine. Berberine is a plant alkaloid that can lower cholesterol by around 15-20% and can be used in conjunction with other cholesterol-lowering supplements and medications. 5. Black seed oil. Over 100 million people will fill a prescription for levothyroxine this year and most of them have no idea how many different things interfere with its function. This includes food, medications, and, yes, even supplements. Which is why I put together a list of supplements that can cause problems with thyroid medication. Are you taking any? 1. Biotin - Biotin interferes with the ACCURACY of thyroid medication and levothyroxine. 2. Caffeine - Caffeine decreases the absorption of your thyroid medication. 3. Iron and calcium - Both iron and calcium bind to and inactivate levothyroxine and other thyroid medications. 4. Glucomannan and other fiber supplements - Glucomannan and fiber supplements delay the absorption of thyroid medication. 5. Estrogen enhancing supplements. - Supplements that increase estrogen increase thyroid binding globulin which decreases how much free thyroid hormone your body can use. Why is it that some thyroid patients experience almost too good-to-be-true side effects when they STOP taking thyroid medication? And why does taking thyroid medication seem to make some people feel WORSE? Should thyroid medication make thyroid patients feel better? You would think so, but life isn't always that simple. There are some people who lose weight when they stop taking thyroid medication and, in this video, I want to explain why. Here are two reasons: 1. You were taking levothyroxine when you didn't need to be on it. Up to 30% of thyroid patients taking thyroid medication right now don't need to be on it. If you are someone who is taking medication when you don't need to, you may be making your thyroid worse (because your own thyroid gland would do a better job at regulating your levels compared to a medication). 2. Your dose of levothyroxine was too high. Contrary to what you might think, high doses of levothyroxine will not always cause weight loss. In fact, taking too much thyroid medication can cause your body to create high levels of reverse t3 which results in tissue-level hypothyroidism. By stopping thyroid medication, your reverse T3 level can decrease which, paradoxically, improves thyroid function at the cellular level. Does this mean you should stop your thyroid medication if you want to lose weight? No! But it does mean that if you are having trouble losing weight that you should take a closer look at your thyroid medication dose to determine if you are taking the right amount and if you really need to be on it. Everyone knows eating too much sugar can be damaging to your body, but did you know it can also be damaging to your thyroid? If weight loss and better overall health weren't enough to convince you to give up sugar then maybe these 5 thyroid-related benefits will be. Here's what happens to your thyroid when you give up sugar: 1. Your thyroid hormones will be more balanced. Reducing inflammation can help your body convert T4 into T3 thereby increasing thyroid function. 2. It will be easier to lose weight. Cutting sugar will improve your thyroid which increases your metabolism but also positively effects insulin levels and muscle glycogen. 3. Your skin will look better. Sugar accelerates aging by degrading the function of collagen and elastin. 4. Your thyroid gland will be better able to protect itself. Sugar impacts your microbiome which disrupts immune function. The better your immune system works, the better your thyroid can protect itself against thyroid hormone-related oxidative damage. 5. You will have more energy. Fatigue is a major symptom of hypothyroidism and it also happens to be common in those who consume sugar. The more sugar you eat, the more reliant you become on sugar as a source of energy instead of fat. This triggers constant food cravings. 6. You'll have more control over your appetite. Both thyroid dysfunction and sugar consumption promote cravings for sugar which can be hard to control. Eliminating sugar from your diet reduces those cravings (though they do increase in the short term). Don't confuse sugar for carbohydrates! Learn why I recommend that every thyroid patient consumes 100 grams of healthy whole-food carbohydrates each day: https://youtu.be/xmgvv8QL3XI?si=7srCYt2TyrOgAoMN Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? Many patients with Hashimoto's feel frustrated. They don't like the idea of taking thyroid medication for life and they don't like the idea of feeling like there's nothing they can do to help themselves feel better. The good news is they can do something: take supplements. The right supplements are not only safe, they can also be effective at improving thyroid and immune function in people with autoimmune thyroiditis. Here are 6 supplements that can help you feel better if you have Hashimoto's: 1. Zinc Zinc helps support the immune system, thyroid function, and thyroid conversion. My recommended zinc supplement: https://www.restartmed.com/product/t3-conversion-booster/ 2. Selenium Selenium helps increase T3 and provides protection to the thyroid gland against oxidative stress. Selenium is also found in my recommended zinc supplement: https://www.restartmed.com/product/t3-conversion-booster/ 3. Adrenal support Adrenal adaptogens help provide energy and can be combined with thyroid glandulars for even better results. My recommended adrenal support supplement: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/ 4. Probiotics and Prebiotics 20% of T3 is created in the gut and it's a major site of immune regulation. The easiest way to improve your gut health is by taking probiotics and prebiotics. My recommended probiotic supplement: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyro-biotic/ 5. Vitamin D3 with Vitamin K2 Vitamin D3 protects your thyroid gland from thyroid cancer and thyroid autoimmune diseases while vitamin K2 helps with calcium shuttling. My recommended vitamin D3 + K2 supplement: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyro-adk/ 6. Black seed oil (Nigella Sativa) Nigella sativa (the plant that produces black seed oil) has been shown in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial to help improve thyroid function and lower thyroid antibodies. My recommended black seed oil: https://www.restartmed.com/product/hashimotos-ab-rx/ #thyroid #hypothyroidism #hashimoto's
Millions of prescriptions of thyroid medication will be filled this year and the vast majority of them will be for levothyroxine. Of those millions, only about 10% or so will go to a class of thyroid medication called natural desiccated thyroid. Despite being only 10% of all prescriptions, thyroid patients have a clear preference for it. Not only does it help with weight loss, but it also can help better control thyroid symptoms based on surveys of thyroid patients. There's only one problem: Doctors don't like to prescribe it. Unfortunately, they are under the impression that NDT is an inferior medication to levothyroxine which is why today, I'm busting these NDT myths. Here they are, in no particular order: 1. Claim #1: Taking NDT Will Cause Bone Loss & Heart Problems Long-term studies show this isn't true PROVIDED you are not taking more than you need. 2. Claim #2: Newer Synthetic Medications Are More Effective The idea here is that NDT may cause side effects because of its T3 content. This may happen, but it's also the reason that people prefer NDT... because it works. 3. Claim #3: NDT is Not FDA-Approved This is true but irrelevant. NDT has been use since 1890 so it was grandfathered into the FDAs newer requirements. 4. Claim #4: NDT is Old-Fashioned This isn't true either as all thyroid medications contain the same bio-identical thyroid hormones. The same T4 that is found in levothyroxine is also found in NDT. 5. Claim #5: Taking NDT Will Cause Mad Cow Disease NDT comes from pigs (not cows), and there's never been a reported case of Mad Cow disease in the US. 6. Claim #6: Taking NDT Will Increase Thyroid Antibodies This is theoretical and may be a problem for a rare subset of people, but not enough to warrant that everyone avoids it. Claim #7: NDT Isn't A Real Medication Because it Can Be Purchased Over The Counter NDT is not the same thing as over-the-counter thyroid glandulars which is what this claim confuses. Despite what many of you may feel, it's definitely possible to get to a normal weight if you have a thyroid problem. That doesn't mean it's easy, but it does mean it's possible. In order to do that, though, you'll want to avoid these mistakes. Mistake 1. Massive upfront calorie restriction. Calorie restriction in some form will be necessary to get to your ideal weight but many thyroid patients should spend more time focusing on their thyroid function instead of their calories, at least in the beginning. Mistake 2. No weight goal or plan. Thyroid patients who set specific goals are the ones who will reach them. If you don't have a plan then you won't obtain your goal. Mistake 3. Overeating healthy foods or "healthy" versions of unhealthy foods. Paleo brownies are still brownies whether they are paleo or not. Are they healthier than box brownies? Sure. But they still shouldn't be on the menu if you are trying to lose weight. Mistake 4. Not having realistic expectations. As a thyroid patient, your weight loss is going to be slower than the average person. Coming to terms with this will help sustain your efforts. Mistake 5. Cutting carbs too quickly. Cutting carbs is great for a quick burst of weight loss due to a loss of fluid so be mindful about when you cut them. Mistake 6. No resistance training (you're losing muscle and fat instead of just fat). Your goal should be to lose fat and maintain muscle but most people end up losing 50% fat and 50% muscle. Roughly 80% of hypothyroid or low thyroid patients say that they have trouble losing weight. It's for this reason, that they are often attracted to dangerous diets that promise rapid weight loss. Unfortunately for them, instead of rapid weight loss, they are often met with thyroid damage, metabolic damage, and short-lived changes on the scale that revert back to normal the second they stop. Which is why today I'm going to talk about the most powerful weight loss treatments that exist for thyroid patients. If you are looking to lose weight SAFELY while ensuring that your weight won't just come right back on the second you stop, these are for you: 1. Prolonged fasting (1-4 days) Fasting is hands down the cheapest and most reliable way to lose weight. While it is a form of calorie restriction, it works better than daily calorie restriction for patients with thyroid dysfunction (see the video for more info as to why). 2. Strategically decrease carbohydrate intake Your thyroid needs carbohydrates, at least 100 grams per day, but you can strategically reduce your carb intake to push out water weight and nudge the scale downward. This is great if you need to rapidly lose some weight for something like a wedding. But given their importance for daily thyroid function, carb cycling works better than long-term low carb diets. 3. Zone-2 training Zone-2 training promote more fat burn than any other level of exercise and it's perfect for thyroid patients because it's lower in intensity than HIIT. This means better compliance, more fat loss, and less fatigue. 4. T3 thyroid medication T3 thyroid medication is by far the most powerful thyroid hormone available and it also happens to be the best for weight loss. The only problem? It's hard to get. If you can't get T3 then opt for T2 instead which is available over the counter and comes in cream and capsule form. 5. GLP-1 agonists I'm not a huge fan of GLP-1 agonists in general, but there's no question that they do work and there may be a situation where using them makes sense. That said, given their significant side effect profile, they should be reserved for when all other treatments have failed! Don't forget that a healthy diet is part of long-term weight loss and if you need help with that, check out this video: https://youtu.be/5seJiR5aCAM?si=P3UkDO9_2CaL8jaQ Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? There's a lot of bad advice that gets thrown around out there for people who have Hashimoto's. And, believe it or not, some of the worst offenders are doctors! If you have Hashimoto's, make sure you aren't falling for these lies: 1. Your TSH is "normal". The TSH is an accurate test for diagnosing thyroid disease but it's not a great test for assessing if you are being adequately treated. 2. Changing your diet won't help your thyroid. It's always been the case that changing your diet is an important and necessary treatment for just about any disease state and Hashimoto's is no different. 3. You'll have to take thyroid medication forever. Even though you MIGHT have to take thyroid medication forever doesn't guarantee that you will. New research suggests that there are a lot of patients out there who can get off their meds. 4. The best and only treatment for hypothyroidism is levothyroxine. While levothyroxine works for some people, it doesn't work for everyone. There are plenty of other options you can look into. 5. Your thyroid is "normal" so your symptoms are in your head. If you still have low thyroid symptoms despite taking thyroid medication then it means you aren't taking enough medication or that your doctor is missing something. You should eat low carb if you have a thyroid problem like hypothyroidism and want to lose weight, right? No! Cutting your carbohydrates has been shown to REDUCE thyroid function by negatively impacting thyroid lab tests like free T3 and reverse T3. The change that we see in people who go low carb for long periods of time mimics the same thyroid lab tests we see in chronically ill patients and in those who starve themselves. In other words, if you want better thyroid function and better thyroid lab tests, you need to eat more carbs. This applies if you have hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's, and even if your thyroid has been removed. But how many carbs do you need? The answer? At least 100 grams per day. These carbs should be consumed as whole food sources, NOT processed foods like pastries, cookies, cakes, donuts, etc. And don't be stingy on fruits or 100% fruit juice either as both of these are healthy options and will not cause weight gain. Don't worry about carbs causing weight gain either, because that's not the case (see the studies in the video for proof). Cutting your carbs is a big mistake that thyroid patients make when trying to lose weight and if you want to see the others then check out this video: https://youtu.be/vxtia4SlX7g?si=pSJD9niICtyVMk9y The 100-gram/day minimum even applies to those thyroid patients who have insulin resistance and the number only goes up from here depending on your activity level. Glucomannan is a plant fiber that comes from konjac root and it has some special properties that can help you lose weight. Unlike other plant fibers (which are also healthy) it can absorb up to 100x its weight in water. This holding of water allows it to press against stretch receptors in your stomach which impacts appetite. But this is just one benefit, here are 3 ways that glucomannan can help you lose weight: 1. By helping you to control your appetite. When taken before a meal, and with water, glucomannan absorbs water which pushes against your stomach walls. This then sends signals to the brain that you are full. But, in this case, you are full of plant fiber and not food which means you are hacking your appetite. 2. By delaying the absorption of sugar and carbohydrates. When introduced to water, glucomannan turns into a sticky viscous fiber which delays the absorption of glucose and carbohydrates. This delay means better insulin and blood sugar control which means more weight loss. 3. By positively impacting gut health. The healthier your gut is, the easier it will be to lose weight. This is why studies show that taking both probiotics and prebiotics can often result in fat loss. Study here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10000630/ How do you use it? For weight loss, 3 grams per day taken 15-20 minutes with a big glass of water before your biggest meal of the day works best. Using it this way helps your brain think you are eating way more calories than you actually are which means that you can naturally suppress your caloric intake without causing severe hunger pangs. For even better results, combine glucomannan with olive oil and l-glutamine. One easy way to check the status of your overall health and the health of your thyroid is by simply looking at your nails. Because your nails grow slowly, and because they respond to stressors on the inside of your body, they represent a 6 month history of your overall health. It just so happens that they also give you valuable information about your thyroid function as well. In hypothyroidism roughly: 70% of patients experience fragile nails 48% experience slow growth 40% experience thinning And 38% experience onycholysis (which is nail separation at the base) In hyperthyroidism roughly: 100% of patients experience koilonychia (which is depression of the nail in the center with flaring of the nails on the side) 83% experience softening of the nail 29% experience onycholysis (which, again, is nail separation) And 10% experience brittle nails In addition to these problems, those with thyroid problems are also at increased risk for developing: 1. Leukonychia 2. Pits in the nails 3. Brittle nail syndrome 4. Vertical lines 5. Horizontal lines These 6 treatments can help improve the quality of your nails: 1. Avoid nail trauma 2. Make sure you optimize thyroid function 3. Take a multivitamin 4. Reduce your intake of calcium and take vitamin K2 5. Take collagen peptides 6. Take silicon Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? These 3 simple vitamins can help support your thyroid in more ways than one and, based on data from NHANES, most people aren't getting enough of them from their diet. Here's how they work and why they are helpful: #1. The Pro-Thyroid Benefits of Vitamin A Vitamin A helps with the production of thyroid hormones, protects your thyroid gland from autoimmune disease, prevents thyroid gland enlargement, and protects against thyroid resistance. Up to 45% of the US population doesn't meet their vitamin A intake requirements from food so supplement may be a good idea. #2. The Pro-Thyroid Benefits of Vitamin D3 One study showed that hypothyroid patients taking vitamin D saw improvements in TSH levels and calcium regulation. Vitamin D also protects against thyroid cancer and both types of autoimmune thyroid disease (Graves' and Hashimoto's). #3. The Thyroid-Symptom Related Benefits of Vitamin K2 Vitamin K2 can help prevent two of the biggest consequences of low thyroid function: osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. All thyroid hormones are important for different reasons but if we are talking about pure power, T3 reigns supreme. Compared to other thyroid hormones, it's about 100 times more active on the thyroid nuclear receptor which means that it does the majority of the heavy lifting. And because of its power, when T3 levels are low, you will feel T3. By my estimation, low T3 is probably one of the biggest causes of persistent low thyroid symptoms among patients with hypothyroidism and is often missed because most doctors don't check for it. But if you want to optimize your thyroid, you need to optimize your T3. Here are some of the most common causes of low T3 that you should be aware of: 1. Thyroid gland problems 2. Decreased T4 to T3 conversion 3. Relative t3 deficiency (thyroid hormone resistance) 4. Illness or chronic medical conditions 5. Nutrient deficiencies 6. Prescription medications If you suspect you have low T3 then you'll want to watch this video which walks you through natural ways to increase it: https://youtu.be/q3eBmUCu7KQ?si=wWTjH54-HkUhPPus Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? Experiencing symptoms and not sure where they are coming from? It may just be your thyroid. Owing to the fact that just bout every cell in your body has a thyroid hormone receptor, the symptoms of hypothyroidism are vast. And while you may know about the more common symptoms, there are plenty that can easily get mixed if you don't know what you are looking for. With that in mind, here are some of the most surprising symptoms of hypothyroidism (low thyroid function): 1. High cholesterol Thyroid hormone regulates the elimination of cholesterol. When thyroid hormone is low, cholesterol clearance is decreased which causes a build-up of cholesterol in the body. 2. Menstrual problems Because thyroid hormone impacts both progesterone and estrogen, low thyroid can cause menstrual problems including problems with fertility. 3. Swelling in the legs and in the face Low thyroid function increases mucopolysaccharides in the tissues which pull water along with them. This results in swelling wherever they go. 4. Headaches Headaches may be an early predictor that you are about to become hypothyroid and the same is true for migraines. 5. Mood swings A sluggish thyroid decreases ATP production in the brain which slows down your ability to think and process information. This results in changes to your mood, depression, and brain fog. 6. Dry skin Thyroid hormone acts on eccrine or sweat glands found in your skin. If your body can't produce enough sweat then your skin will become dry and cracked. 7. Muscle aches and pains Thyroid hormone helps your muscles relax which prevents painful trigger points from developing. 8. Changes to your voice Just about every thyroid patient will experience changes to their voice but it may not be noticeable unless you are an expert. 9. Carpal tunnel syndrome Mucopolysaccharides can accumulate in the wrist which can put pressure on the median nerve resulting in carpal tunnel syndrome and nerve pain. If you have any of these symptoms then you'll want to get these tests: https://youtu.be/xjvdJ95AU7E?si=tyyuZ0OaVborfLdM Most people are aware of the most common symptoms like cold hands/feet, weight gain, hair loss, constipation, and fatigue, Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? T2 thyroid hormone is a potent thyroid hormone and the only thyroid hormone available over the counter. For this reason, many thyroid patients have asked me how they can test their T2 level to determine if they would benefit from a T2 supplement. And while commercially available tests are not available for T2 right now, we do have a way to estimate T2 status in the body with the use of proxy measurements. These proxy measurements aren't perfect, but they do seem to be fairly accurate based on my experience. Here are the measurements that I'm talking about: 1. Resting heart rate. If T2 is low then your resting heart rate will be low (usually in the 50s to 60s range). 2. Metabolism. Feel like your metabolism is sluggish? Low T2 could be to blame. 3. Cholesterol. When T2 is low, cholesterol levels will rise. 4. T3 and T3 levels. T2 is a byproduct of the metabolism of thyroid hormone. If your T4 and/or T3 levels are low then we can assume that T2 will probably also be low. 5. Thyroid symptoms. Still have thyroid symptoms despite taking thyroid medication? This is probably the most obvious sign that you need more thyroid hormone. Which is more important for weight loss: hormones or calories? I would say, for most people, its hormones. This is because the majority of people are already pretty good about keeping an eye on their calories. And if calories were the problem, they would already have lost their weight. Both calories are hormones are important for regulating your weight but I've found that hormones become more important as you have more weight to lose. And calories become more important the closer you are to your ideal body weight. If you are someone who has more than 15-20 stubborn pounds to lose that aren't being managed by calories, then it may be time to check out these 4 hormones. These hormones all have the ability to help you lose weight by targeting different functions in the body: *note: these hormones should only be used if you are DEFICIENT or low in them. You wouldn't want to take them for weight loss if your levels are normal. 1. Testosterone. Testosterone is important for both men and women and it works to help build muscle, enhance mood, and help with energy. 2. Progesterone. Progesterone is primarily important for women where it acts to antagonize the effects of estrogen. High levels of estrogen promote weight gain and progesterone counteracts this effect. 3. Thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormones, especially T2 and T3, are very important for regulating metabolism and can be used by both men and women. 4. DHEA. DHEA is a weak androgen but also provides additional functions in the body. It's relatively easy to get and some studies show it may be beneficial for weight loss. #hormones #weightloss #weightlosstips #thyroid #progesterone #testosterone #healthy Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? Want an easy way to reduce your risk of developing all autoimmune diseases by up to 22%? One study of over 25,000 people showed that you could do this with just the use of two supplements taken every day: Fish oil and vitamin D. Link to study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8791065/ Here are some takeaways from the study so that you can easily apply this information to your life and get the benefits: 1. The reduction in autoimmune disease is probably higher than 22%. This is because the researchers could only include people with official autoimmune diagnoses and not probable autoimmune diseases. 2. The benefit from these treatments applies to ALL autoimmune diseases, not just thyroid autoimmune diseases. 3. The longer you take these supplements, the bigger the benefit. The researchers found that the benefit of taking vitamin D was significantly higher after it was already taken for 2 years. 4. Even if you already have an autoimmune disease, there's still good reason to take vitamin D and fish oil. Fish oil and vitamin D still provide other therapeutic benefits to those who already have Hashimoto's or other autoimmune diseases. 5. You can probably get even better results by taking more vitamin D and a higher fish oil dose. The doses used in this study can be considered the bare minimum. Not having enough vitamin D increases your risk of developing unwanted symptoms like depression, fatigue, and muscle weakness but it also increases your risk of developing more serious consequences like diabetes, weight gain, and cancer. For these reasons, you should take your vitamin D level very seriously. But the question is: how can you rapidly increase your vitamin D to prevent these issues? I'm glad you asked because you have 3 options that work VERY well: Method #1. is the sunlight method. This method is by far the most natural and the one that you should aim for if at all possible. It works by harnessing the power of the sun which helps to convert and activate vitamin D in the skin and body. Watch the video to make sure you are using the correctly! Method #2. is the supplement method. Because not everyone will be able to get all of the necessary vitamin D that they need from the sun, we have to talk about supplements. If you are using supplements then you'll want to make sure to use vitamin D3 instead of D2 at a dose of around 1,000 to 5,000 IUs each day. Method #3. is the combination method. The combination method takes advantage of the sun, supplements, and natural sources of vitamin D from food. Realistically, this is the method that most of us will use because it's not always practical to get our vitamin D from any singular source. Because vitamin D more closely resembles a hormone as opposed to a vitamin, increasing your vitamin D has the potential to help many different systems in your body. Take your vitamin D level seriously and get tested if you haven't recently, especially if you are trying to improve your overall health. #vitamind #vitamin #vitamins #supplements #supplement Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? It's never normal to have elevated antibodies to portions of your thyroid gland floating around in your blood. The presence of these antibodies indicates that your own body may be trying to attack and destroy your thyroid gland and they are the hallmark of thyroid autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease. And, unfortunately, conventional medicine doesn't have very many great treatment options for lowering these antibodies. But that isn't a problem because it turns out that there are some great natural supplements that have been proven to help. These supplements fall into two groups: Those proven in studies to be beneficial: 1. Nigella sativa 2. Selenium 3. Inositol 4. Iodine reduction And those shown to be effective based on anecdotal experience and based on known physiologic action: 1. Vitamin D 2. Fish oil 3. Magnesium Want more help reducing your thyroid antibodies? Want an easy way to naturally increase how well your thyroid is working by up to 20%? There's a simple way to do it: by treating your gut. Your gut and thyroid are connected in several ways and if there's a problem with one, you can guarantee there will be a problem with the other. There's no scientific study to back my claim that treating your gut can increase thyroid function by up to 20%, but based on my understanding of thyroid physiology, I think it's possible for most people. Here's why: 1. Estimates suggest that 20% of circulating T4 is converted into T3 in your gut. 2. Healthy bacteria can bind and hold onto thyroid hormones allowing for recycling of these hormones instead of elimination in the stool. 3. Your gut is the site of the absorption of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients from both the food that you eat and the supplements that you take. Your thyroid needs these nutrients to function optimally. 4. It's the site where your thyroid medication is absorbed. 5. 70% of immune cells live there. 6. The ratio of good to bad bacteria, known as your microbiome and found in your gut, influences your metabolism and ability to lose weight. You can heal your gut easily by doing the following: 1. Putting the right healthy foods into your body. 2. Removing unhealthy and inflammatory foods. 3. Taking probiotics. When opting to take probiotics, look for a probiotic with multiple species. Berberine is one of the most powerful weight loss supplements out there because it acts on some of the most fundamental issues that precipitate weight gain. What makes it ideal is that it has a broad range of benefits, is well-tolerated, and can be used in conjunction with other weight loss supplements and medications. Here's how it can help you lose weight: 1. By improving insulin sensitivity. Berberine has been shown in at least 1 study to have an equal impact on blood sugar as the prescription medication metformin. 2. By increasing the density of mitochondria in your muscle cells. Increasing muscle function is critical to burning more calories. 3. By activating brown fat tissue. Brown fat tissue helps regulate your heat production and metabolism and berberine can help you brown white fat. 4. By reducing inflammation. Reducing inflammation helps balance fat-storing hormones like leptin. 5. By improving gut health. There is a connection between gut health and your ability to stay lean and berberine can help clean up your microbiome from unwanted bacterial overgrowth syndromes. The ideal dose of berberine is somewhere between 500 mg all the way up to 2,000 mg taken each day. You will want to split the dose taking half in the morning and half in the evening. Most people are fine taking 1,000 mg per day but you may want to take more if you are trying to treat issues like diabetes or insulin resistance as well. #berberine #weightloss #weightlosstips #weightlosstreatment #weightlosssupplement Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? Not drinking enough water? You may want to rethink that decision because dehydration has a negative impact on your thyroid! Not only is about 60% of your body made of water (making it essential for just about every cell and function), but your body also needs water to maintain the concentration of proteins in the bloodstream. States of dehydration cause changes to the functions of these proteins which can then impact your hormones (including your thyroid). Here are 3 ways that dehydration can negatively impact your thyroid: 1. Dehydration impacts thyroid hormone delivery. When you are dehydrated, your body will shunt blood flow to the tissues that need it most. This means that thyroid hormone will not be carried evenly to all of your tissues (especially those farthest from your heart). 2. Dehydration impacts thyroid hormone-binding proteins. Dehydration impacts the concentration of proteins that bind to and inactive thyroid hormone. This means that you will have less active thyroid hormone available for your cells to utilize. 3. Dehydration limits skeletal muscle function and performance. Your muscles represent a major site of thyroid hormone action and when you are dehydrated, their function is limited. Limited function means you are burning fewer calories and you will have less thyroid hormone activation. 4. Dehydration reduces the filtering and elimination of chemicals that have negative effects on thyroid function. Compounds called endocrine disrupting chemicals can negatively impact your thyroid and these compounds are eliminated through the kidneys. When you are dehydrated, your kidneys are not able to eliminate compounds as well causing them to build up and wreak havoc. If you're suffering from hair loss then there's a high probability you've looked into hair supplements. But before you go out and purchase one, there's something you need to know: there's a secret ingredient that all of the best hair supplements contain and I'm going to share it with your right now. What's the ingredient? It's silicon. What's crazy is that this ingredient has been under your nose for a long time without you even realizing it because it's often hidden as a different name among other ingredients. But give me a few minutes and I'll explain why silicon is the PRIMARY ingredient found in the best hair supplements. Silicon is a trace element which means your body only needs small amounts of it and it's because of this that it often gets overlooked. A true deficiency in silicon is quite rare but it's not uncommon to not get enough. And low levels can and definitely do impact your hair, skin, and nails. Popular supplements like nutrafol and viviscal, which are used by thousands of people every day, contain this ingredient in spades. Learn more about how silicon can be used as a powerful hair regrowth supplement, which dosing is best, how to make sure you're getting enough of it, and much more in this video. #hair #hairloss #hairsupplements #hairlossprevention #hairlosssolutions #hairlosstreatment Supplements that CAUSE hair loss: https://youtu.be/MlSNg-QZdv4 Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? If you are interested in losing weight or simply maintaining weight then you need to pay close attention to your basal metabolic rate. This rate controls how many calories you burn at rest and it's the most important factor when it comes to your weight. The question is, can you do anything to augment your basal metabolic rate to improve how many calories you burn at rest? And the answer to that question is yes. This is because your thyroid is primarily responsible for controlling BMR. It's estimated that up to 40 to 60% of your caloric burn is regulated in part by your thyroid. And there are things you can do to improve your thyroid function to increase how many calories you are burning at baseline. One of those things is by taking thyroid hormones, especially t2 thyroid hormone. Emerging research is showing that T2 thyroid hormone is one of the thyroid hormones in your body that is primarily responsible for regulating your metabolism. And it just so happens that T2 is the only thyroid hormone that is available over the counter. Studies in both humans and animals suggest that T2 thyroid hormone may be an emerging treatment for obesity both in people with thyroid disease and in those with normal thyroid disease. Learn more about using T2, its safety profile, how much to use, and much more. #t2 #weightloss #weightlosstips #weightlosssupplement #weightlossjourney #weightlosstreatment #thyroid Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? Exercise is probably one of the best treatments for your thyroid that you aren't taking advantage of. Don't believe me? Here are just some of the benefits: 1. Higher free thyroid hormone levels. 2. Lower TSH level. 3. Faster weight loss. 4. Increased muscle mass and better muscle health overall. 5. Improved mood. 6. More consistent bowel movements. 7. Reduced inflammation. If you wanted to take advantage of a treatment that can help you almost as much as a thyroid medication (without the need for a prescription) then exercise is something you simply can't ignore. But how can you exercise for your thyroid? And if you do, how do you know which exercises are best? Exercising with a thyroid condition is difficult, but not impossible. Symptoms like fatigue, and muscle pain, which can stem from low thyroid function, can limit your ability to exercise but the good news is that exercising can actually help alleviate these symptoms. If you are going to exercise, the best combination of exercises includes aerobic exercise along with strength training. Doing both of these will allow you to take advantage of the benefits of exercise without causing more harm than good. By the way, exercise works for ALL types of thyroid conditions including hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, those post thyroidectomy, and those post radioactive iodine ablation. #thyroid #hypothyroidism #hashimoto's #exercise #healthy #exercises #thyroidawareness #thyroidtreatment Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? Selenium may be one of the best and easiest ways to reduce thyroid antibodies if you have Hashimoto's thyroiditis or Graves' disease. Selenium is a trace mineral that is necessary for the function of certain enzymes and proteins. One of the functions of selenium is to create glutathione which acts to protect the thyroid gland from oxidative stress. When selenium is low, your thyroid gland is open to damage just from creating thyroid hormones. Taking selenium has been shown in several studies to help lower thyroid antibodies and even balance thyroid hormone levels like free t3 and free T4. There is some conflicting information, though, regarding selenium supplementation as not all studies suggest that it's effective. The reason for this is probably because selenium supplementation works best for those people who need it and who are deficient. Should you take selenium as a thyroid patient? I think so because the benefits far outweigh the potential negative side effects and, even if it doesn't help lower your antibodies, you haven't done any harm in the process. #thyroid #hypothyroidism #hashimoto's #selenium #supplements #healthy #hashimotos #hashimoto #hashimotosdisease #graves #gravesdisease Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? Taking the right supplements has the potential to dramatically improve your thyroid and either help it work better or prevent future problems from occurring. Whether you're trying to optimize your thyroid function because you have an existing problem like hypothyroidism or because you just want to prevent a future thyroid problem from occurring, these are, in my opinion, the 5 best supplements to take for your thyroid EVERY day: 1. A daily multivitamin. A multivitamin because your thyroid is incredibly active and chews through a lot of nutrients. The most important include zinc, selenium, vitamin A, iodine, and vitamin B12. A deficiency in any of these may impair thyroid function. 2. Protein powder. Protein powder makes the list because it's one of my all-around favorite supplements for one reason: it helps you stay on track with your diet. In addition, there's also a connection between your muscle mass and thyroid function. 3. Omega 3 fatty acids. Fatty acids help to lower inflammation which helps ensure you can make more of the most powerful thyroid hormone T3. 4. Vitamin D3. Low vitamin D is associated with an increased risk of developing hashimoto's thyroiditis, Graves' disease, AND thyroid cancer. Vitamin D is a no-brainer. 5. A probiotic. A probiotic because that's the easiest way to support your gut and make sure you can both absorb nutrients and thyroid medication (if you take any). #thyroid #hypothyroidism #hashimoto's #thyroidsupport #thyroidsupplements #hashimoto Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? Yes, you've been lied to: brazil nuts are not the source of selenium that you've been led to believe! Yes, they are definitely the single best food source of selenium out there, but they have a few dirty little secrets that you should know about BEFORE you start eating them. These secrets are so impactful on their overall benefit that I think it often makes more sense to supplement with selenium as opposed to getting it from brazil nuts. Here's why: The selenium content in brazil nuts varies dramatically from nut to nut. Some studies suggest that it's as high as 6 mcg per nut all the way as high as 154 mcg per nut. The second reason has to do with selenium toxicity. It's easier than you might think to accidentally take too much and when you couple this with the variability in dosing, you're very likely to get much more or much less than you think. The third has to do with the potential increased risk that taking too much selenium can have on diabetes risk. The bottom line? Think twice about using brazil nuts as your primary source of selenium. If you want to eat them, then use no more than 1 per day to make sure you stay out of the trouble zone. #brazilnuts #selenium #nutrition #nutrientdeficiencies #supplements Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? Your thyroid gland is the most important endocrine gland in your body (yes, I said it!) because it controls and regulates just about every cell in your body as well as just about every hormone in your body. It also happens to be sensitive to inflammation and if this happens, you will feel it. These are the most common signs of thyroid gland inflammation: 1. Fluctuating thyroid hormone levels. 2. Feeling run down. 3. Joint pain and muscle pain. 4. Allergies or reactions to foods. 5. Skin problems. 6. Symptoms of other autoimmune diseases. Because thyroid gland inflammation is never normal, you should always get it checked out. The most common cause of thyroid gland inflammation is the autoimmune disease Hashimoto's. If you feel you have inflammation make sure to get tested for this condition and make sure you take steps to reduce inflammation as quickly as possible! You can do this with natural therapies, changing your diet, and taking the right supplements. #thyroid #thyroidawareness #hypothyroidism #hyperthyroidism #thyroidproblems #thyroidsymptoms Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? Using the right supplements has the potential to help you manage your thyroid symptoms and support your thyroid. Using the wrong supplements can do the exact opposite. In fact, using the right supplements is even worse because not only will they not help you feel better, but you're also wasting money. This video outlines some of the WORST supplements and WORST formulations that thyroid patients can take. If you are looking to improve thyroid function and better manage your symptoms then you'll want to avoid these supplements and ingredients: 1. Magnesium oxide. 2. Zinc oxide. 3. High-dose iodine. 4. Cyanocobalamin. 5. Vitamin D2. Instead of using these formulations, you will want to opt for magnesium glycinate, zinc glycinate, low-dose iodine, methylcobalamin, and vitamin D3. #thyroid #hypothyroidism #thyroidsupport #thyroidawareness #hashimoto #supplements Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? Wait, aren't fruits harmful because they contain sugar?! Not by a long shot. Fruits are not only healthy for your entire body, they can also help support your thyroid gland. If you are someone with thyroid disease, or if you are just looking to support your thyroid to keep it healthy, this information is for you. Fruits work to help your overall health by providing a natural source of fiber, phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals, and polyphenols. These ingredients help your body fight of inflammation, protect your cells, help with weight loss, and so much more. When it comes to your thyroid, a few fruits stand above others. These include: 1. Blueberries. Packed full of nutrients, blueberries clock in at 85 calories per serving. These are low carb and have some of the best health benefits of any fruit. 2. Goji berries. Goji berries act as both a fruit and an adaptogen which means they can help with adrenal fatigue, vitality, and cortisol imbalance. 3. Avocados. This fruit is high in healthy fats which makes it unusual among those listed here. Healthy fats and fiber is the name of the game here. 4. Kiwis. These fruits contain huge amounts of vitamins and minerals in each serving beating out some of the more common fruits you know of. 5. Coconut. This high fat fruit is a great source of medium chain triglycerides which makes it ideal if weight gain is a problem for you. #thyroid #hypothyroidism #nutrition #fruits #plants #hashimoto #diet Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto's: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog?
