Concussion symptoms and mental health can be very interconnected, especially when you can't see the symptoms on the outside. Today, Cristabelle interviews Bella Paige (founder of Post Concussion Inc) on her journey with 10+ concussions and trying to hide her symptoms at first and pretending like nothing was wrong. This led to depression, which Bella openly shares with us today in a candid and inspiring conversation. Bella Paige is a brain injury advocate. After sustaining over ten concussions and experiencing post-concussion syndrome for years, she hit a low spot and attempted to take her own life. After going to therapy, Bella knew she needed to do something for all those suffering from this invisible injury. She started Post Concussion Inc because she wanted to aid not only individuals who have suffered from concussions but also their families and friends. Bella Paige was a highly competitive show jumper as a younger girl. And she LOVED it. The adrenaline rush alone might have been enough to keep her going but she loved the competition, the horses, all of it. She planned to compete and show horses for the rest of her life. Sadly, injuries intervened. In any sport having to do with 1200 pound animals you can bet that injuries will come, and often. But highly competitive, driven athletes (even young ones) often don't share their pain with others, nor do they ask for help. So Bella kept competing in spite of accumulating injuries and increasing pain. But, finally, sadly she had to stop and she had to drop out of school to heal.Such a set back can be emotionally crushing, and it was for Bella. It took a great deal of time, many dark days with little to brighten them, and a vast amount of help for her to come through her emotional and physical struggles. And she's not done. Bella works on herself everyday. She's found dirt bikes to replace horses, which she sees as less dangerous, but still feeds her need for a rush. A lot of what gives her purpose and, I imagine a bit of peace, is her podcast, her mentoring, and her speaking engagements. All of which she does to share her story with others like her (and me) in the hope that we can all gain some small or big insight from her experience to help us on our path to less pain, more clarity, and a life of value.Find Bella's podcast here: https://www.postconcussioninc.com/podcast and her website here: https://www.postconcussioninc.com. Talking to us today about the link between brain-based injuries and mental health, is psychotherapist and clinical research associate, Michaela Olson. One of the main contributors to concussions being designated "the invisible injury" is the absence of physical damage observed using traditional visualization techniques, such as CT scans or MRIs. Addressing this issue with us today is Dr. Uzma Samadani, associate professor, attending neurosurgeon, and founder of Oculogica. The mission of Oculogica is to diagnose and classify different types of brain injuries using eye-tracking.Join us today as we dive into how Oculogica is achieving these goals and why FDA approval is such a big achievement. Find out why Dr. Samadani chose to become a neurosurgeon, how the diagnosis and treatment of brain injuries have changed over the past few decades, and what the underlying cause of a brain injury can be. We learn why "mild brain injuries" are so dangerous to patients and their mental health, and how sport has been good for shedding light on brain injuries. We also address the guilt, blame, and shame surrounding a brain injury and how inequity can impact a patient's outcome. For all this, and so much more, tune in today for another fascinating episode! Maintaining physical health at the cost of your mental health is no use, so sometimes we just have to take the risk and enjoy ourselves! Bella has been doing this over the last little while and it's opened a whole new can of worms. From her fears and self-doubt while snowboarding, to her sister's rage, today Bella talks us through her thought process around risking yet another concussion. We dive into why there doesn't seem to be an answer to the question "How many concussions is too many?", and how being nervous can negatively affect your performance. Bella describes how her perception of her injuries is different from that of her loved ones, and how this changes their opinions of risky behavior. We hear why taking these risks is so important to Bella, and why it's important to understand that your thinking in the past is not your thinking now. Silvie Van de Ree was on her way home on her scooter when another scooter driver hit her. Initially, all she noticed was the whiplash, so she went home and rested. Fast-forward a year, and Silvie was still suffering from the scooter crash. Through her own research, she established that she was suffering from post concussion syndrome. Join us today as we talk to Silvie about what her symptoms were, how her doctor tried (but failed) to help her, and the various treatments she has done with varying success. We hear why it's so important to trust yourself when you feel a treatment isn't working (or when you need a break), and how recovery isn't a straight line. Silvie explains why she founded The Concussion Community in 2021, a platform allowing sufferers to connect, to learn from online courses and classes, and hopefully one day meet for a retreat! Bella has suffered 10+ concussions that have affected her in a multitude of different ways. Everything from sports, careers, and school, to friendships, and relationships with family. Bella was in highschool when she hit her brick wall after hiding her symptoms for months. Because of this, Bella has really emphasized that you never really know what people around you are going through and that not telling anyone was one of the biggest mistakes she's ever made. We can learn a lot from Bella's story as she touches on very important topics of mental health and the struggles associated with concussion recovery. Bella learned that there are many others out there going through similar situations as herself, and that from her experiences, she can help advocate and support others through it.
So much of what concussion, and brain injury survivors experience, is invisible. While the physical symptoms of a TBI and post-concussion syndrome can be debilitating and difficult to live with, the invisibility of the injury can contribute to, and worsen, feelings of isolation and depression. In today's show, Bella unpacks what she has learned from living with an invisible injury, and shares what she wishes she had known during her recovery. Bella reflects on how her identity was changed by being a concussion survivor, how she became attached to that identity, and interrogates the work she has needed to do to move on from her identity as a survivor. Tuning in you'll also hear more about our concussion school toolkit. How do you know when something is wrong? This can be a tricky question to answer and even more problematic when the wounds may be invisible. Our guest today, Bella Paige, shares her story of having concussions throughout her life, how that affected her, and how did it leave her feelings. Through the time we have been doing CausePods, a common theme of “I just felt like the only one” has been the genesis for creating a podcast to fight that thought and remove the stigma related to a topic. The feeling of community around a niche group of people can be powerful, and the Post Concussion Podcast is no exception.
