Host Kathleen McInnis sat down with Dr. Benedetta Berti, Head of Policy Planning in the Office of the Secretary General at NATO, for an insightful conversation on her role in adopting NATO's first Climate Change and Security Agenda. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the rise of non-state actors, the face of warfare has evolved considerably. To adapt to these changes, NATO has developed a unique and robust set of political and military capabilities to address the full spectrum of crises – before, during and after conflicts. In today's episode, we look at NATO's historic contributions to global security, as well as examine how the Alliance has evolved to counter emerging threats and new technological advancements. We are joined by Dr. Benedetta Berti, a foreign policy and security researcher, analyst, consultant, author and lecturer. Her work analyses the impact of insecurity on civilians, as well as crisis management and prevention. Media Minded explores the bizarre world of misinformation and conspiracies. Following on from the success of the first season in 2019, each episode platforms a different subject who has previously been a victim of, or a willing participant in, a conspiracy theory… but these lines may be more blurred than you think. Ex-cultists, anti-vaxxers and more describe their slow descent into the untrue, and those who experience the brunt of the lies and hatred explain the effect that the proliferation of these ideas has. All the while, industry-leading academics and experts provide theoretical justifications for the actions taken by all parties. Presented by Matteo Bergamini Edited and recorded by Sabina Mckenzie Brown. Season 3 of this podcast is made possible thanks to the kind support and sponsorship of the U.S. Mission to NATO.

We, the Heads of State and Government of the 30 NATO Allies, have gathered in Brussels to reaffirm our unity, solidarity, and cohesion, and to open a new chapter in transatlantic relations, at a time when the security environment we face is increasingly complex. This is how the communiqué from the NATO summit that took place on June 14th starts. The document should direct the Alliance towards an updated Strategic Concept. NATO acknowledges that it faces multifaceted threats, systemic competition from assertive and authoritarian powers, as well as growing security challenges to its countries and its citizens from all strategic directions. Russia, China, cyber, hybrid, and other asymmetric threats, rapid advances in the space domain or the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction are mentioned in the communiqué. Climate change is called a threat multiplier that impacts Alliance security. Why is NATO talking about all those challenges? And what steps will the Alliance take to address them? I talked to Dr. Benedetta Berti, a foreign policy and security researcher, analyst, consultant, author and lecturer. She serves as Head of Policy Planning in the Office of the Secretary General at NATO. Our discussion took place at GLOBSEC 2021 conference in Bratislava. If we want sustainable, long-term security to be the norm in the world, it's time to radically rethink how we can achieve it, says TED Fellow and conflict researcher Benedetta Berti. In an eye-opening talk, Berti explains how building a safer world has a lot less to do with crushing enemies on the battlefield and a lot more to do with protecting civilians -- no matter where they're from or where they live.

The major combatants in Syria are all deliberately displacing civilians as a tactic of war. How is this shaping the conflict, and what does it mean for the future of Syria? Dr. Benedetta Berti, who studies internal conflicts and the integration of armed groups, guests.
Benedetta Berti is the author of Armed Political Organizations: from Conflict to Integration (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2013). Berti is a research fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) and a lecturer at Tel Aviv University. The book investigates the inner workings of three organizations: Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Irish Republican Army. Berti's intricate research reveals the history and institutional components of each group beyond what we have come to accept about each. These are organizations that have used violence and military strategies, but also have social service wings that provide education and public health programs. Over time, each adopted increasingly political aims and the mechanisms to participate in elections. Berti's claims that changes in political opportunity structure help explain the timing of these moves into electioneering. The findings from this comprehensive book can advance comparative politics scholarship on armed conflict and social movements, but also should be read by public administration and organizational theory researchers.
