Anna Borgman is a Montana-based butcher, chef, and writer whose work focuses on helping people better understand and appreciate the origins of their food. Whether writing an article for Steven Rinella's MeatEater or helping to field harvest and process a bison, Anna has a gift for helping curious, conscientious people become more educated about the impacts of their food choices. And as you'll hear in this conversation, her enthusiasm and authenticity are infectious– even after more than an hour of chatting, I felt like we only scratched the surface. - Anna grew up in Oregon, and thanks to participation in 4H, she was involved with animals and livestock from an early age. During her teenage years, skiing became her primary passion, and she devoted much of her post-college life to spending as many days as possible in the mountains, oftentimes working multiple jobs to make ends meet. Eventually, through a serendipitous chain of events that we discuss, she found her way into culinary school, which was her gateway into the world of meat and butchery. Through all the various stages of Anna's career, she's brought intense devotion– possibly even obsession– to her work, which has resulted in a fascinating life trajectory that is both inspiring and instructive. - Anna and I share so many mutual friends and I've been hearing about her and her work for many years, so I was thrilled to have her finally join me for a conversation. We started out discussing her childhood in Oregon and how skiing became her primary focus for so many years. We discuss some of her adventurous international travel experiences, and how those places and the characters she met led her into the world of food. We discuss the upsides of obsession, advice for getting out of ruts, the value of curiosity, and the importance of experiencing other cultures. She also talks in detail about the realities of slaughtering livestock, why she feels such a connection to butchery, her favorite books, and much more. - Even though this was my first time meeting Anna, I felt like I was chatting with an old friend. I'm super-inspired by all of her work, but even more inspired by the focus and passion that she brings to everything she does. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. --- Anna on MeatEater Anna on Instagram Forage Fed --- TOPICS DISCUSSED: 3:00 - What Anna wanted to be when she grew up 7:30 - When Anna realized that most livestock she raised would led to slaughter  10:00 - Anna's interest in skiing and how it led her to work with a French cook in Australia and adventures in Spain 16:30 - Anna's experience in culinary school 20:15 - Why so many interesting people have pastry making on their resume 22:15 - When Anna became interested in butchery, and whether or not working long days in culinary school made Anna feel more content 25:45 - The importance of having an obsession 28:45 - Anna's advice for getting out of a rut  32:00 - The scariest things that have happened to Anna during international travel, as well as the lessons travel taught her 38:30 - When Anna went all in on butchery 43:00 - The process of slaughtering and butchering 46:30 - Anna's first slaughter 51:45 - Lessons from butchery 57:00 - The value of curiosity  59:45 - Discussing Forage Fed 1:03:45 - Anna's book recommendations 1:09:00 - Anna's guilty pleasures (or lack thereof) 1:14:00 - Anna's parting words of wisdom --- ABOUT MOUNTAIN & PRAIRIE: Mountain & Prairie - All Episodes Mountain & Prairie Shop Mountain & Prairie on Instagram Upcoming Events About Ed Roberson Support Mountain & Prairie Leave a Review on Apple Podcasts

Efficiency is what every business wants… Efficiency with low expenses. But how do we get this? What are the steps we need to take as a business? This is what Justin says: “Efficiency begins with headcount. Making sure that your workers are not ‘employees,' but ‘owners.' They need to look at the greater whole of the company and step into different roles.” Justin Borgman is the Chairman and CEO at Starburst - an analytics engine that provides a modern solution that addresses these data silo & speed of access problems. In this episode, Justin shares how he developed a culture centered around grit to endure downturns, experiments that helped him build Starburst, how to run a business with efficiency, the importance of focusing on the strongest elements of your business, revenue models, and more.   Here's what's inside:  Culture will get you through the downturn: Justin says when the macro environment is going through a recession, company culture is what will get you through it. Reinforce your values every chance you get, create expectations, and develop grit. Embody your level of ownership: Justin mentions that the most efficiency comes with a proper headcount of valuable workers. There is a difference between an ‘employee' and an ‘owner.' Owner's look at the greater whole of the company and how they can make it grow holistically while employees just do one job. Be an owner. Utilize consumption patterns: Consumption patterns are essential for seeing future patterns. Justin and Starburst use it to study and obtain important information on databases and to forecast future patterns from a sales, marketing, and management perspective. How can business owners maximize the value of their company? Look no further than the people in your organization and the talent in your region.Private equity enables entrepreneurs and founders to achieve the American Dream by offering a succession plan to an organization that will be a great steward of the company and carry out the mission of the founder. Borgman Capital does just this. The firm works with midwestern companies across all sectors, many in the small-to-midsized manufacturing market, to purchase and grow the business so the founder can transition to the next phase of their life. This is the American Dream for entrepreneurs. In this episode, we talk with Sequoya Borgman, Managing Director of Borgman Capital, about strategies for how businesses can create the most value in their company, why investing in your people is so crucial for a business owner, and why manufacturing is ripe for opportunity in the U.S.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:Leaders can maximize the value of their company by professionalizing the business: Many founders tend to hold onto all the insight, relationships and know-how for every function of the company. When all the value is tied up in the owner, it's very difficult to replace that individual, leaving risk for the buyer. Business owners can increase their company's value by professionalizing their leadership team and handing off key responsibilities and knowledge to up-and-coming leaders who will help run the organization after the owner exits.Any organization that isn't using the most up-to-date technology is falling behind: In private equity, this means cutting-edge analytics technology to help valuate a prospective portfolio company. But the same is true for the companies in their portfolio - automation raises the value of the company and solves many of the workforce issues faced by manufacturing businesses. Manufacturing is booming in the United States and will continue to do so, and those who automate now will get ahead in the future. Having a workforce development plan in place will create added value to your company: Any private equity company's goal is to grow their portfolio businesses - and that means hiring and training new employees. With the added increases in automation, companies that already have learning and development strategies in place are worth more than those who don't. ResourcesTo learn about Automation Alley and get free access to Industry 4.0 knowledge visit: www.borgmancapital.comConnect with Borgman Capital on social media: LinkedInVisit episode page: https://techedpodcast.com/borgman

In this episode we speak with Justin Borgman, Chairman & CEO at Starburst, which is based on open source Trino (formerly PrestoSQL) and was recently valued at $3.35 billion after securing their series D funding.  In this episode we discuss convergence of DW's / DL's, why data lakes fail and much much more. Top 3 takeawaysThe data mesh architecture is gaining adoption more quickly in Europe due to GDPR.There were two main limitations of data lakes when comparing to DW's, performance and CRUD operations. Performance has been resolved with query engines like Starburst and tools like Apache Iceberg, Apache Hudi and Delta Lake are starting to close the gap with CRUD operations. The principle of a single source of truth / storing everything in a single DL or DW is not always feasible or possible depending on regulations. Starburst is bridging that gap and enabling data mesh and data fabric architectures.
