Jesse and Krista Casler have a deep understanding of the currency exchange between earthly dollars and treasure in Heaven. Jesse is the Chief Operating Officer of Hope International, having served Hope over the last 20 years. Together, Jesse and Krista have allowed generosity to touch nearly every part of their lives. Their stories touch on many aspects of the generous life, from financial accountability to foster care and generosity of the home to donor advised funds and charitable bunching. But above all, their lives are marked by a deep joy in everything that they do. Major Topics Include: Their unique foundations for faith and generosity How they met and began their careers The mission, programs, and story of Hope International Stories of God using Hope to change lives Misconceptions about addressing poverty Four domains of generosity impact—personal, spiritual, social, and material Approaching financial discussions together as a joyful challenge Tips for starting a financial accountability group Generosity through foster care Thoughts for people in ministry who want to be givers Participating in the “year of Jubilee” principles in a modern context When to give from the perspective of a nonprofit How to scheme with God QUOTES TO REMEMBER Jesse: “Sometimes when we think about poverty, we think about material things like not having enough money. But for some people, poverty is also aloneness.” Jesse: “How can I save as much money as possible and put it to good use to create even more so that I can be generous with the world?” Krista: “Being raised in a pastor's household, we were very conscious of how our money was spent, but at the same time, living in generous ways.” Krista: “If a group of individuals living in great poverty, all of whom are blind or visually impaired, can talk about their capacity for saving and giving, how can I not also have some capacity for saving and giving?” Jesse: “There's a role for regular giving that keeps an organization moving, but it can be really impactful when a larger gift can be given to start something new or catalyze something in a much bigger direction.” Jesse: “No matter what your salary is, you can create distance between income and expense. And decisions you make about your expenses become your engine for saving, investing, and giving.” Jesse: “When we turn 50, what if we gave away 10% of our net worth, just our income in that year?” Krista: “There's joy and fun when you're being creative in giving. Even in a season when you don't have much money, you can ask God to help you use what you've got.” Krista: “There's joy in looking at a giving opportunity as a creative challenge to scheme with God.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW Hope International (see our interview with founder, Jeff Rutt or CEO, Peter Greer) Alisa Hoober, on Creating a Strong Family Culture of Generosity and Mission (see our past interview here) National Christian Foundation (see our interview with President Emeritus, David Wills) Two Men with Money by Tim Keller The Finish Line Community Facebook Group The Finish Line Community LinkedIn Group WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Health & Wellness In Focus Episode #19 – Coping With Grief & Loss: “Light in Your Valley” Host: Dr. Bryan Hudson | Guest: Dr. Stephen E. Gardner Program Summary Dr. Gardner’s links: LinkedIN, www.linkedin.com/in/stephen-e-gardner-edd-ma-ct-6823b4b Everyday Consulting, www.everydayconsulting.org Crown of Hope International. www.crownofhope.org In this insightful episode of Health & Wellness In Focus, Dr. Bryan Hudson interviews Dr. Stephen E. Gardner—a pastor, theologist, veteran advocate, transformational coach, and independent scholar—on the theme “Coping With Grief & Loss: Light in Your Valley.” Key Highlights: 1. The Multifaceted Nature of Dr. Gardner’s Work: Dr. Gardner views his roles beyond the pulpit, engaging with the community on issues like death, loss, and personal transformation. His work with veterans especially involves shifting from post-traumatic stress to post-traumatic growth. 2. Understanding Grief Beyond Death: Loss includes not only death but also life transitions like job loss, shifting beliefs, or health setbacks. Grief is both emotional and neurological—highlighted by Dr. Gardner’s recommended book The Grieving Brain by Mary-Frances O’Connor. 3. The Four Tasks of Mourning (based on Dr. William Worden): Accept the Reality of the Loss – Acknowledge what has happened, even if heart and mind aren’t in sync. Process the Pain of Grief – Embrace emotions like guilt and sadness without rushing to “move on.” Adjust to a World Without the Deceased – Including identity changes, especially for spouses or long-term caregivers. Find a Way to Maintain Connection While Moving Forward – Through legacy, memory, or service. 4. Harmful Coping Practices: Telling people to “snap out of it” is unhelpful and often stems from discomfort or fear. Over-spiritualizing grief or using shallow platitudes can invalidate real feelings. 5. Integrating Faith with Mental Health: Faith is essential but must be paired with informed mental health practices. Spiritual responses should not replace therapy or professional help. Ministry of presence—being there without words—is often more healing than scripture alone. 6. Cultural Competence in Counseling: One-size-fits-all approaches fail across cultural lines. Dr. Gardner advocates for respectful, “user-centered” care that adapts to clients’ cultural and spiritual contexts. Professionals should ask: “How can I help you in a way that respects your culture?” 7. Encouraging Mental Health Careers: There's a great need for more culturally competent professionals, particularly from underrepresented communities. Churches and pastors should present these fields as mission and kingdom work. 8. Breaking the Stigma Around Mental Health: Many avoid counseling due to fear of judgment or appearing “broken.” Seeking help should be normalized like seeing a doctor for a broken arm. 9. The Power of Meaning-Making: Healing accelerates when people can find purpose or meaning in their loss. Dr. Gardner shared his personal story of losing his mother at 18 and how he found strength through understanding her legacy and completing his life mission. Final Thoughts: Dr. Gardner stresses the importance of community, competent care, and courageous vulnerability when facing grief. Pastor Hudson reinforces that churches should be wellness hubs that connect people to the full range of care they need. Viewers and listeners are encouraged to share the episode to help others who may be experiencing grief or loss.

Peter Greer is the President and CEO of HOPE International, a global Christ-centered economic development organization that operates in 27 countries. Under Peter's leadership, HOPE has grown significantly in scope and influence, investing in the dreams of underserved entrepreneurs around the world. He's also a prolific author with more than 15 books to his name, including Mission Drift, Rooting for Rivals, and his latest, Lead with Prayer. A Harvard Kennedy School grad and a sought-after speaker, Peter combines nonprofit leadership with business insights to fuel a global movement of Christ-centered empowerment and economic justice. Peter joins us to discuss the importance of prayer in leadership and life—especially in light of the wisdom he's gathered in co-authoring Lead with Prayer alongside Cameron Doolittle and Ryan Skoog. In this transparent conversation, Peter reflects on how his own spiritual practices have changed over the years, the challenges of truly collaborative leadership, and why prayer isn't something to squeeze into our schedules—it should be the foundation. “Most leaders today must think they're busier than Jesus—because most are spending less time in prayer, not more.” - Peter Greer “Not organization building, but movement making—that's where the exciting work is happening right now.” - Peter Greer “I've written everything not as an expert, but as a practitioner still learning what it means to live open-handed.” - Peter Greer This Week on The Wow Factor: How Peter's journey from studying international business in Moscow led him to microenterprise and missional work The mission and growth of HOPE International, and how it supports entrepreneurs in over two dozen countries The story behind Lead with Prayer and what inspired Peter and his co-authors to dig deep into leaders' prayer lives Why prayer often decreases as leadership responsibilities increase—and how to flip that script What we can learn from Johnny Erickson Tada about suffering, gratitude, and deeper intimacy with God Terry Looper's sacred pace and how “getting to neutral” helps him make decisions grounded in spiritual discernment The ripple effect of prayer and why we should pray bigger, bolder, multi-generational prayers Practical ways to integrate prayer into your everyday life—like prayer by association and “wasting time with God” How fasting, digital detoxing, and physical posture can deepen your spiritual walk Lessons from the Moravian prayer movement and how a small community's prayers changed the world Peter Greer's Word of Wisdom: Try new things. Today we sit down with Peter Greer, President and CEO of HOPE International, to unpack the revolutionary insights from his new book, "Lead with Prayer."
This week, we revisit our conversation with Peter Greer. Peter is the president and CEO of HOPE International, a global Christ-centered economic development organization serving throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. Prior to joining HOPE, Peter worked internationally as a microfinance adviser in Cambodia and Zimbabwe and as managing director for Urwego Bank in Rwanda. He received a B.S. in international business from Messiah University and an MPP in political and economic development from Harvard's Kennedy School. Peter's favorite part of his job is spending time with the entrepreneurs HOPE serves—whether harvesting coffee with farmers in Rwanda, dancing alongside savings groups in Haiti, or visiting the greenhouses of entrepreneurs in Ukraine. As an advocate for the Church's role in missions and alleviating extreme poverty, Peter has co-authored over 10 books, including Mission Drift (selected as a 2015 Book Award Winner from Christianity Today), Rooting for Rivals (selected as a 2019 Leadership Resource of the Year in Outreach magazine), The Spiritual Danger of Doing Good (selected as one of the top 40 books on poverty by WORLD magazine) and Created to Flourish (which his mom reviewed with five stars and a smiley face emoji). More important than his role at HOPE is his role as husband to Laurel and dad to Keith, Liliana, Myles, and London. While his sports loyalties remain in New England, Peter and his family live in Lancaster, PA.
In this episode of Capital Hacking, host Josh McAllen interviews Jeff Rutt, a successful entrepreneur and founder of Hope International. Jeff shares his journey from a dairy farm to building homes and empowering individuals through microloans. He discusses the concept of "Toxic Charity" and highlights the impact of providing loans that lead to dignity and sustainability. Jeff encourages listeners to pray, get involved, and support Hope International financially. He also mentions the opportunity to join preset trips to witness the organization's work firsthand. Jeff's dedication to making a positive impact inspires listeners to contribute to changing lives globally.Ultimate Shownotes:[01:10] - Jeff Rudd's Background and Journey from Dairy Farming to Home Building[02:05] - Introduction to Hope International and Toxic Charity Concept[05:22] - Keystone Custom Homes Overview[11:30] - Process of Building a Neighborhood[16:38] - Comparison of Keystone Custom Homes with Public Builders[20:36] - Discussion on Hope International and Empowering Communities[25:29] - Impact of Hope International and Invitation for Support[32:14] - Personal Stories of Charity Work and Impact[35:38] - Ways to Get Involved with Hope International[40:15] - Information on Upcoming Events and Trips with Hope InternationalTurn your unique talent into capital and achieve the life you were destined to live. As we conclude our Summer Psalms series, we see that the Psalms end with a great climax of praise to God for his greatness. We recognize how His greatness is passed on from generation to generation as we hear from our friend Musa Jospeh of Christ's Hope International. But, above all we see that God in his greatness chooses to pour out his grace for us in Jesus that we might extend that grace to others.
How do prayer and leadership relate to each other? Looking at the lives of some leaders, it seems like prayer is incidental to leadership at best. For others, it's a personal priority that doesn't seem to impact leadership in any obvious way. For still others, prayer is like an on-ramp, preparatory for the work of leadership but largely left behind when the leading begins. What does Christian leadership that is deeply rooted in a life of communion with God look like? I'll be talking about this today with Peter Greer, one of the authors of Lead With Prayer. Peter Greer, is the president and CEO of HOPE International, a global Christ-centered economic development organization serving throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. Under Peter's leadership, HOPE has expanded from working in two to over twenty countries and served over 2.5 million families. Prior to joining HOPE, Peter worked in Cambodia, Zimbabwe, and Rwanda. He has co-authored 15 books, including Mission Drift, Rooting for Rivals, The Gift of Disillusionment, and The Spiritual Danger of Doing Good.____________________________________________________Connect with Alan on LinkedIn or learn more about Unhurried Living programs on their website. Where have you seen God's hand in your life to transform your life or others? In this episode, Jeff, Jeff, Creek, and Sarah discuss:Transitioning from being a lukewarm Christian living a selfish life to living a God-led generous life.Wrestling with God and letting Him lead you where He wants you to go.Appreciating all things God has given us and understanding where everything comes from. With Jesus, all things are possible so turn it all over to Him. Key Takeaways:Falling apart as a couple is a choice. Focusing on each other and on Jesus in times of struggle will change you and bring you together if you let it.God will show up in the lowest of times and the meekest of areas.Passion grows when you know the purpose behind the profit.Don't hold on to the stuff - the bitterness and grudges. Give each other grace in all things. There is nothing that feels like giving. You will find peace, satisfaction, and all the feel good emotions when you're giving. "We want Jesus at the heart of everything we're doing. We've drank the good water, we've seen the light, we've felt the fire, and we realize that He makes all the right decisions. We want Him at the helm of everything. We put Him at the head of our business, we put Him at the head of our household, we put Him at the head of our finances, He can have it all because I trust Him 100% with His decisions." — Creek Stewart Episode References:HOPE InternationalGospel PatronsFat Guys in the Woods ClipsSOS: How to Survive Clips About Creek Stewart:Creek is a world-renowned Survival Instructor. In the world of business and leadership, amidst the endless tasks, meetings, and decisions, one often wonders: where does prayer fit in? Peter, the president and CEO of Hope International, offers insights into how prayer can not only coexist but also thrive in the heart of leadership. Peter and Justin sat down and had a transformative conversation that reshaped Peter's approach to prayer. At the heart of Peter's revelation is a reframing of the way he engages in prayer. Rather than viewing prayer as a means to ask for specific outcomes or favors, Peter now sees it as a pathway to deepening his friendship with Jesus. This shift from transactional to relational prayer has been nothing short of revolutionary for Peter, infusing his life and work with renewed purpose and meaning. Peter's journey was not solely introspective; it was informed by a study of different business leaders and organizations. Through this exploration, he gained valuable insights into innovative approaches to prayer in the workplace and leadership. They observed that successful leaders were intentional about incorporating prayer into their daily routines, recognizing its transformative power in shaping both personal and professional lives. Since inception, HOPE has provided more than $1.5 billion dollars to more than 2.5 million small business owners across 24 countries in the form of microfinance loans in order to empower them to break their own cycle of poverty with the gifts God gave them. Over the years, Jeff has used profits from Keystone to fuel HOPE's mission. However, he took things another step further when he gave away 89% of the ownership of Keystone through the National Christian Foundation.

Have you ever considered taking your employees on a mission trip? In this episode, Jeff, Jeff, and Peter discuss: The history of HOPE International. Taking employees and family members on mission and vision trips. Being generous in experience not just finances. Getting the most out of your international travel experiences. Key Takeaways: Bringing your team into your mission will bring greater engagement and job satisfaction. With a greater perspective, the stresses and challenges of your life will seem much less important and difficult than before your mission trip. Important work needs to happen before and after the trip, not just during the trip. There are more similarities than differences between the people of the world. We are all neighbors, whether across the street or across the world. "Just try it! See what happens. Tell me if there is not more joy, more life, more meaning when you come back. We are designed by our Creator for meaning and purpose. A life that is lived inwardly is not a life that is lived to the fullest." — Peter Greer About Peter Greer: Peter Greer is the president and CEO of HOPE International, a global Christ-centered economic development organization serving throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe.Prior to joining HOPE, Peter worked internationally as a microfinance adviser in Cambodia and Zimbabwe and as managing director for Urwego Bank in Rwanda. Are you following your plan for your life or God's plan for your life? In this episode, Jeff and Matt discuss: Seeing God's hand in the faith-building times of our lives. Getting equipped through God's callings. Generosity and culture in your professional life. Maintaining a learning disposition. Key Takeaways: God will provide and He will always take care of us. Build teams that recognize the power of the team and all that you can accomplish when working together. There is power in recognizing we are all sinful creatures and are working together to better ourselves. God is a Big God. He has shown that we can trust Him, even if it means we must reinvent ourselves and follow His plan, not our own. "In a sinful world, as humans, it's so easy for us to fall into behaviors where we self-promote, and we self-protect. And when that kind of attitude shows up on a team, it's deadly. And one of the things that I'm trying to do inside of our culture is to help people feel safe." — Matt Nelson About Matt Nelson: Matt Nelson has served as the CEO of Pahlisch Homes since 2020, bringing more than 15 years of experience in the residential development and construction industry to the role.
