Today I got to talk to Dr. Bill Kimberlin author of Watch Me Die: Last Words from Death Row. Had a fantastic, in-depth talk about Bill's experience with prisoners on death row, and what he has learned in his time conversing with the condemned. In Watch Me Die, Dr. Bill Kimberlin explores the grim realities of death row in Ohio and across America. He spends time interviewing inmates and eating meals with them. In some cases, he is the last person to speak with them before they die. From the moment they are placed on suicide watch until the moment they are executed, Kimberlin follows their twisted and complex journey through the execution process. Through open and intimate conversation, Kimberlin earns the trust of many high-level and violent offenders. He shares their unfiltered thoughts and feelings as revealed to him through their writings, their artwork, and their own words. He also shares his own fears and concerns as he shares space with unconstrained individuals who have taken countless lives. This newly revised edition includes a “Where Are They Now?” section, updating the reader on which inmates have faced their execution, which inmates are still counting their days, and who else has asked Kimberlin to watch them die. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thatscriminaljs/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thatscriminaljs/support

Sword and Scale True Crime

A recurring question in the criminal justice system is whether the death penalty is moral, right or just. Everyone seems to have a fairly strong opinion regarding it, but almost no one has any any first-hand experience with the process. The idea that such a severe punishment to be conducted in secrecy, behind closed doors, may seem archaic and somewhat medieval. In this episode we talk to a man named Dr. Bill Kimberlin, who did something few others would. He actively attempted to attend an execution, and in fact has seen three of them conducted. He also has extensive knowledge of the death row system in the state of Ohio and describes the cushy life that the worst criminals in our society enjoy. We also revisit the Rodney Reed case and get an update on its state of limbo a full year after we first reported the story to you.

Watch Me Die is a firsthand account of Ohio's death row and the state’s execution process unlike any other. Dr. Kimberlin, a trained clinical psychologist and professor of psychology, goes beyond the prison walls and into the world of death row inmates. No bars, no shackles, and no chains. Kimberlin spends time one-on-one with some of Ohio's worst killers to learn about their life on death row. Then he watches them die.  You will see how these inmates think as Kimberlin not only spends time interviewing them but also eats meals with them and, in some cases, is the last person to speak to them before they are executed.   You will also be walked through the full execution process, starting from when the inmate is placed on suicide watch and going until they are pronounced dead on the execution table.   You will see the flaws in the system and be able to judge for yourself if the death penalty, as it is utilized today, is really worth pursuing.   This book promises to take you into the depths of death row and into the minds of killers like no one else has ever been able to do before. You will see their artwork, their writings, and their mindset as they prepare for their final days on this planet. WATCH ME DIE-Dr. Bill Kimberlin
