Over 70 percent of Americans say they would like to grow spiritually, according to the Barna research group. That includes Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z.  “When over seven in ten people say they want to grow spiritually, they are not necessarily saying, ‘Hey, I want to meet Jesus,' ‘Hey I want to become a Christian,'” says Savannah Kimberlin, an Associate Vice President for Church Engagement at Barna.  The people who are open spiritually, she says, are looking for purpose or inner peace and are willing to consider a spiritual answer. Reaching them with the answer in Jesus will look different from how Christians spread the news of Jesus in previous decades.   “They care very deeply about knowing and seeing and being taught that Christianity is not only true, but that it is also good,” she says. Christians are the most attractive to spiritually hungry people when their beliefs show through in the way they live even more than in the words they say.  “If we want to step into these kinds of relationships where we are being salt and light, and where we are facilitating spiritual conversations, we have to make sure that our actions speak louder than our words,” Kimberlin says.  The Barna Group has been researching faith in America for over three decades. In this thought-provoking episode, Savannah Kimberlin, the Associate Vice President of Church Engagement at Barna Group, delves into the challenges that Gen Z, parents, and educators are facing in today's society. With Gen Z growing up in a "pressure cooker" environment, there is immense internal and external pressure on them to be perfect, which has led to declining faith and mental health issues. However, Kimberlin highlights that despite these challenges, Gen Z is seeking truth and purpose, and Christian leaders can guide them in their spiritual journey by being honest and authentic with children, facilitating discussions, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and being patient.

In Watch Me Die, Dr. Bill Kimberlin explores the grim realities of death row in Ohio and across America. He spends time interviewing inmates and eating meals with them. In some cases, he is the last person to speak with them before they die. From the moment they are placed on suicide watch until the moment they are executed, Kimberlin follows their twisted and complex journey through the execution process. Through open and intimate conversation, Kimberlin earns the trust of many high-level and violent offenders. He shares their unfiltered thoughts and feelings as revealed to him through their writings, their artwork, and their own words. He also shares his own fears and concerns as he shares space with unconstrained individuals who have taken countless lives. Although researchers play an important role in making progress on equitable research, they are one part of a broader ecosystem of people and organizations who make research possible and use research findings to change policies, programs, and practices to improve people's lives. On this episode of On the Evidence, we focus on the role of funders, particularly those in the philanthropic sector, as early proponents and adopters of culturally responsive and equitable research in social programs. Our guests for this episode are Mindelyn Anderson and Kimberlin Butler. Anderson is a sociologist who has studied social inequality and stratification, race and migration, education and social mobility, and health. She is the founder and principal of Mirror Group, a consulting firm that brings collaborative, participatory, utilization-focused evaluation and capacity building to communities and learning organizations, including foundations. Butler is the senior director of foundation engagement at Mathematica. Since joining Mathematica in 2019, Kimberlin has helped lead the company to incorporate equity in all aspects of Mathematica's work. She also works with foundations that are setting the agenda on embedding equity in research in areas like food security, early care and education, and economic mobility. During the conversation, Anderson and Butler talk about their career paths, how they became interested in culturally responsive and equitable research, the role philanthropy plays in centering equity in research, and how research organizations can avoid common pitfalls as they seek to incorporate equity in their work. This edition includes a “Where Are They Now?” section, updating the reader on which inmates have faced their execution, which inmates are still counting their days, and who else has asked Kimberlin to watch them die. Kimberlin is an executive Director of re:imagine/ATL, an organization that trains, equips, and inspires Generation Z to build careers in the creative and digital media industries. Moderating is Kisha Imani Cameron, a film and television producer and a film coach. Cameron founded Africa First, a program for emerging filmmakers and was the former COO of Ghetto Film School. These three powerhouse women are out to transform this industry in more ways than one, and in this conversation they spend time discussing how real change takes place at the root. The overt lack of diversity and inclusion in the film world is a systemic issue that cannot be ignored any longer and to even begin making a difference takes a village and each one of us taking action. These three guests, each doing their own part to redefine the greater collective of the film community, work together and support one another in reciprocity. One could not exist and be successful without the other. We need to similarly support these organizations, be aware of their work, and involve ourselves in order to be a part of the solution.

Blossoming in times of hardship and depression with Dr. Crystal Lewis Joining me on the show today is Dr. Crystal Lewis. Dr. Crystal is a mentor, author, motivational speaker, singer and change agent. She's also a minister in teen leadership programs and church events. She's passionate about helping people connect with God and pursue a purposeful life. Dr. Crystal uses Christianity as a tool to inspire and motivate all her readers and followers. Her book, The Diamond Transformation - How to Survive and Thrive in Tough Times is an inspiring biography of her life in school and how she persevered through dark times in her life. Dr. Crystal's Life Journey An introvert at heart, Dr. Crystal enjoys listening to women empowerment podcasts, karaoke singing, and journaling. All of which she finds therapeutic for herself when she's drained as a result of work. Life, however, hasn't always been easy for Dr. Crystal. About 9 years ago, she was accepted into Stony Brook University to pursue a PhD in Chemistry. Everything was going great, and life was a roller coaster ride for Dr. Crystal. All this took a sudden flip when a tornado hit the campus she was studying at forcing her to escape campus and seek refuge somewhere else. During the chaos, Crystal lost a lot of important personal files and documents. Her Naturalization certificate which proves her American citizenship was one of the documents she lost. In order to claim her fellowship and scholarship, Crystal needed her original Naturalization certificate. In the midst of trying to find a solution for her problem, Crystal found herself drowning in despair and hopelessness. Everyone she turned to for help turned her down. It was during this dark period of her life that Crystal had a conversation with God and wondered if He still had a purpose for her amidst all the darkness she was in. Thankfully for Crystal, He did. God wanted her to know that He had set a diamond in her which He was soon about to unleash. And this was the reason God was putting her through the pain and sadness she was going through at the time. The Diamond Process. At one point in our lives, we've all felt stifled and stuck in a hard situation. Stage 1: Positioning. In the first stage, diamond is actually graphite. Similar in life. We might feel like we're in a crisis and that God has completely forgotten us by placinging us and our family in an isolated position of failure. Stage 2: Processing. During processing, the graphite goes through intense heating and pressure.Just as in life, God through His tests, places us in intense and hostile environments to enable our growth. Stage 3: The plinian eruption stage. In this stage, the diamond travels through a Kimberlin pipe and beaks. You've probably heard of the saying ‘It's darkest before dawn'. Keep standing and praying. Quotes This is an opportunity to seek God's face and discover what He wants us to know during this season Your destiny is to fulfill God's purpose. Khaysan grew up watching her parents work hard to set up a caravan park from the ground up. This sparked the courage to start her own business at the age of 24, which she grew successfully before a tumultuous exit some years later. Discovering she is not a great long-term employee (she gets bored), Khaysan dove into a new business venture called Project Athlete which blends mindset, nutrition, and health for personal transformation. We explore what she learned from her parents (all business takes time, you gotta love it to make it through hard times, and no bad times last forever); what she learned after rising and falling quickly in business for herself (comfortable breeds complacency and laziness); how she bucked social programming to embrace the entrepreneurial life; mindset secrets from professional athletes (passion fuels everything, stay coachable, and things happen for a reason - get back on the horse after a fall); how her definition of success changed from being all about the money, to money being just a byproduct of doing something that sets your soul on fire; three mindset principles for success (awareness of habits, what triggers good and bad habits, and time for being patient).
