The line between cult and religion is sometimes blurred by the leader of the movement. Bonnie Nettles and Marshall Applewhite blurred the lines of new age religion and a cult by introducing aliens and UFOs. Nettles and Applewhite set out to bring their message of leaving the worldly distractions behind to ascend to the next level. The next level became more complicated when Nettles passed away. It's hard to pitch the idea of being an alien when you die of earthly sickness. Applewhite becoming the sole leader of flock, decided to take them in a direction that would put them in front of the world for all to see as the "spaceship" guided by Nettles passed the earth. Heaven's Gate was an American UFO religious cult based out of San Diego, California, founded in 1974 and led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles. On March 26, 1997, police discovered the bodies of 39 members of the group, who had participated in a mass suicide in order to reach what they believed was an extraterrestrial spacecraft following the Hale–Bopp comet. Just before the suicide, the group's website was updated with the message: "Hale-Bopp brings closure to Heaven's Gate ... Our 22 years of classroom here on planet Earth is finally coming to conclusion – 'graduation' from the Human Evolutionary Level." When Marshall "Herff" Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles met during a stint in the psych ward of their local hospital, the pair hit it off instantly. They decided to go on a spiritual journey together once released and left their lives behind. Influenced by a number of spiritual, religious and cultural practices, they came to the conclusion that they were to lead a group of people to Heaven. However, they viewed Heaven different than most. Traveling the west coast, they made strides in recruiting members to their group until a couple of curious sociologists infiltrated the group and made what they learned public. The group abruptly stopped recruiting and even made cuts to those already following. That's when things grew even stranger.
In this special episode, Brian presents a culmination of years of research outlining the Heaven's Gate cult's ultimate ending and its connection to Coast to Coast AM.
This week, Deanna covers the story of Heaven's Gate. This was an American cult led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles in the 1970s through the 1990s. This group believed that the Earth was about to be wiped clean and that the only way to survive was to leave their human bodies behind and ascend to a spaceship flying behind the Hale-Bopp comet. In this episode, hear about their origins, their story and unfortunate tragic end.
+++ SCOPRI NEXUS ARCANUM CONTATTI, CONTENUTI & NOVITA' -> Qui Iscriviti a Patreon Se vuoi fare una donazione: paypal.me/nexusarcanum
Heaven's Gate was a religious cult that gained infamy in the 1990s for its tragic end. Led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, the group believed that they were destined to shed their human bodies and ascend to a higher plane of existence. The story of Heaven's Gate is a chilling reminder of the power of manipulation and the dangers of extremist beliefs.
Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles were two people with unusual views of the world, they believed they were aliens sent from a higher kingdom, the two witnesses mentioned in the Book of Revelations. So how did they manage to convince 39 people to end their lives in a mass suicide?
Heaven's Gate is the second-deadliest cult in US history. In 1997, 39 of them killed themselves in Santa Fe, California, while wearing Nikes, which I'm sure the Nike PR department really appreciated. Their aim was to catch a ride on the Hale-Bopp comet, which was actually a spaceship of light, sent by 'The Next Level', an interdimensional organisation which you definitely want to be part of. The cult's leaders, Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, secluded themselves and their 'students' for 17 years form the rest of the world, subjecting each other to 'lessons'. Eventually, the cult members were so dedicated that nine of them underwent voluntary surgical castration, which I assume was some sort of team-building activity. Heaven's Gate still maintains a crispy, 1990s-style website, where they have published numerous theological and advertising materials for the cult. So, like any well-adjusted Earthlings, we decided to read them. In 1987, San Diego police discovered the bodies of 37 people in a house. They all had matching haircuts, matching outfits, and infamously - matching Nike sneakers. These were the members of the Heaven's agate cult, and they had decided to ‘graduate' from their human forms, so they could ride the Hale-Bopp comet to Heaven. Led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles (also called ‘Ti and Do'), Heaven's Gate initially seemed like a bunch of of eccentric alien believers, until they orchestrated one of the most shocking mass suicides in modern history. (Unless you believe them, in which case, they just hitched a ride to Planet Heaven on a spaceship comet and lived happily ever after.) HEAVENS GATE Heaven's Gate, was a religious group founded in the United States on a belief in unidentified flying objects. Under a variety of names over the years, including Human Individual Metamorphosis, Bo and Peep, and Total Overcomers Anonymous, the group advocated extreme self-renunciation to the point of castration. It burst into public consciousness following the suicide of 39 of its members in a suburb of San Diego, California, in March 1997. Founders Marshall H. Applewhite (1932–1997) and Bonnie Nettles (1927–1985) met in 1972 and soon became convinced that they were the two “endtime” witnesses mentioned in Revelation 11. In 1975 they held gatherings in California and Oregon that attracted their initial followers. Those who attached themselves to “The Two” dropped out of society and prepared for the “transition” to a new life on a spaceship.

Heaven's Gate leader Marshall Applewhite convinced his 39 followers to take their own lives to go to the next level. I comment on the documentary put out by HBO about the so-called "Cult of Cults"...Heaven's Gate. I also bring up the other founding member Bonnie Nettles and her involvement in this cult.
Hey freaky fam! Ever thought about joining a cult? In the early 1970s Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles created "Heaven's Gate" and they believed they were the keys to enter Heaven. But it doesn't stop there. This cult includes aliens, God, Heaven, the Hale-Bopp comet, and a mass suicide. Tonight Phil and Travis will cover one of the more interesting religious cults in history. The Heaven's Gate religious movement was founded in 1974 by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles. Nettles and Applewhite based their beliefs on a mix of Christianity, New Age, and ufology. Nothing is more fun than a UFO religion, but this story has a tragic end --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/phillip-sams/message
In 1974, the cult known as Heaven's Gate was formed, and for the next twenty years they remained hidden away, preparing for what they believed to be the "next level" above humankind. Bonnie Nettles and Marshall Applewhite, the leaders of Heaven's Gate, appeared to keep the activities of the cult peaceful, but the 39 total deaths at the end of the cult proved otherwise.
In the first episode in our 2 part series on Heaven's Gate we discuss the history of Marshal Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles. Then talk about the early iterations of what would become the cult Heaven's Gate.
Tune in to find out how the alleged "reincarnated Jesus" Marshall Applewhite and his cult partner Bonnie Nettles became obsessed with the Bible and Star Trek and then convinced 39 members of their cult, to cut off their "member" put on some Nike's and then eat applesauce laced with drugs along with a vodka chaser in order to commit suicide and enter the "Next Level" on a UFO. Need I mention they had to have $5.75 for UFO fare????? Who is more likely to join this cult?? April or Caroline??? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

You probably know how this story ends. A cult concerned with aliens and the apocalypse coordinated the largest mass suicide ever on U.S. soil. But how much do you know about how they got there? Hannah and Suruthi untangle the surprising histories of Bonnie Nettles and Marshall Applewhite, and the convictions — around extraterrestrials and ascension, castration and sobriety, and something called “tomb time” — that eventually spelled doom for thirty-eight of their followers. Heaven's Gate was an American UFO religious cult based near San Diego, California. It was founded in 1974 and led by Marshall Applewhite (1931–1997) and Bonnie Nettles (1927–1985). On March 26, 1997, deputies of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department discovered the bodies of 39 members of the group, including that of Applewhite, in a house in the San Diego suburb of Rancho Santa Fe. They had participated in a mass suicide, a coordinated series of ritual suicides, in order to reach what they believed was an extraterrestrial spacecraft following Comet Hale–Bopp. Use Discount Code: TMH2021 for 15% https://excaliburrings.com/ Visit the creator David Lund youtube page and watch him create these amazing works of art. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5qeZue7w51zgM-xnB1_CKg Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/theMediaHijacked/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7Lbqa8NqieSOZpTCtxshQw T-Shirts “NOW AVAILABLE” https://www.themediahijacked.com/ Every Tuesday @3PM PST/6PM EST Join us on twitch.tv Follow us on Twitch.tv: https://www.twitch.tv/mediahijacked Billy: https://www.instagram.com/youneak/ Chris: https://www.instagram.com/sarkastik_jones/ Don't forget Rate and Subscribe!!
