Heaven's Gate was an American UFO religious cult based out of San Diego, California, founded in 1974 and led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles.  On March 26, 1997, police discovered the bodies of 39 members of the group, who had participated in a mass suicide in order to reach what they believed was an extraterrestrial spacecraft following the Hale–Bopp comet. Just before the suicide, the group's website was updated with the message: "Hale-Bopp brings closure to Heaven's Gate ... We pick up after Ti has died and Do shifts the group's focus with a slightly more religious view and a little less sci fi perspective. Though, they still very much prepare to "graduate" to the alien ship that they believe Ti will now send for them. In order to shed more of their humanity, many of the members make major physical sacrifices. The 1990's gave them a renewed hope that the computer age would both keep the income flowing and assist them in spreading their message to the masses. However, Do's videos met more ridicule than popularity. Still, they held on that their ship would come and believed that it had when reports of a UFO following the 1997 sighting of the comet Hale-Bopp. Unfortunately, their belief led to the largest mass suicide by willing participants in U.S. history. Da flog ein Riesenklumpen namens Hale-Bopp am Himmel vorbei. Mehrere Monate war er sichtbar. Dank des Schweifs. Das ist Staub, der von dem gesuchten Himmelskörper abfällt und von der Sonne angestrahlt wird. So entsteht eine Art Leuchtspur am Nachthimmel, die viele Hundert Millionen Kilometer lang sein kann. So werden auch Himmelskörper sichtbar, die weit weg oder eher klein sind. Denn eigentlich ist das, was wir suchen, nur wenige Kilometer groß. Kein Vergleich zum millionenfach größeren Schweif der gesuchten Weltallflitzer. Manche von ihnen flitzen nur einmal vorbei, auf nimmer wiedersehen. Andere kommen regelmäßig zu Besuch ins Sonnensystem und in die Nähe unserer Erde. Allerdings heißt regelmäßig nicht unbedingt oft. Hale-Bopp, der Besucher in meiner Jugend, lässt sich erst in 2400 Jahren wieder blicken. Und? Weißt du's schon? Wie nennt man die Sauseklumpen aus Eis, Staub und Stein, die wir suchen? Throughout human history, comets have fascinated us. They have gone from signs and portents of bad things to come to well-studied and even visited "dirty snowballs". Every year, observers search the skies, hoping to discover the Next Big Comet - Halley, Hyakutake, Hale–Bopp, McNaught. From SOHO and LINEAR to ATLAS and IRAS, numerous observatories have continued to add to the count of discovered comets.  But it doesn't require expensive hardware or spacecraft to make similar observations from your own backyard; telescopes and even binoculars will work - at least for the brightest objects. Every year, observers search the skies, hoping to discover the Next Big Comet - Halley, Hyakutake, Hale–Bopp, McNaught. From SOHO and LINEAR to ATLAS and IRAS, numerous observatories have continued to add to the count of discovered comets. But it doesn't require expensive hardware or spacecraft to make similar observations from your own backyard; telescopes and even binoculars will work - at least for the brightest objects. In 1987, San Diego police discovered the bodies of 37 people in a house. They all had matching haircuts, matching outfits, and infamously - matching Nike sneakers. These were the members of the Heaven's agate cult, and they had decided to ‘graduate' from their human forms, so they could ride the Hale-Bopp comet to Heaven. Led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles (also called ‘Ti and Do'), Heaven's Gate initially seemed like a bunch of of eccentric alien believers, until they orchestrated one of the most shocking mass suicides in modern history. Episode 234: On March 26, 1997, police found the bodies of 39 members of a religious UFO cult known as Heaven's Gate in an 830 square-metre (9,000 square foot) home in Rancho Santa Fe, California, a San Diego suburb. All, including the group's leader, Marshall Applewhite Jr., had died in a ritualistic act of mass suicide. The headline on the cult's website, which remains online today, stated, “Hale-Bopp brings closure to Heaven's Gate.” Over the following weeks, as investigators probed what happened in the home, the story of the Heaven's Gate cult emerged, each detail weirder than the next.  I wrote about this story in my first book, Murder Madness and Mayhem. I have always wanted to cover this on Dark Poutine. I have expanded on what I wrote, especially toward the end of the story, I get into more detail about the victims. The medium of a podcast also allows for other content, including audio clips from individuals involved in the case and other details I was otherwise unable to convey in the book involving Canadian connections which includes one of the victims, Erika Ernst, 40, who was from Calgary, Alberta.
