Being a tenant can be pricey — and it's only getting pricier. Private rents rose by almost six per cent in the year to July, and while the pace may be slowing, the average UK rent still stands at over £1,300 a month. So what does that mean for the millions of people living in private rented homes? This week on Money Box Live, we're looking at the cost of renting — and what it's doing to your finances. We'll hear from a family forced to live apart because they can't afford to rent together, and from a woman struggling to rent because of debt problems. We'll ask what the upcoming Renters Rights Bill means for tenants — and what tax breaks are available to people who choose to rent out a spare room. With rising prices, limited supply, and big reforms on the horizon, join us as we unpack the pressures facing renters — and what support is out there. Felicity Hannah is joined by Matt Hutchinson from Spare Room, Vicky Spratt, Housing Correspondent for The i, and Matt Sheeran from Money Wellness Presenter: Felicity Hannah Producer: Helen Ledwick Editors: Jess Quayle and Craig Henderson (This episode was first broadcast at 3pm on Radio 4 on the 3rd of September 2025).

Namibia's colonial history casts a long shadow over the country's present. Contemporary authors and artists confront the legacies of German and South African colonial rule and engage creatively with the persistent remnants of the past. In their works, the archive remains both an invaluable and fraught resource for accessing obscured histories. In Troubling Archives: History and Memory in Namibian Literature and Art (Transcript, 2025) Julia Rensing examines how writers and artists from Namibia and South Africa navigate archival silences, omissions, and power structures to renegotiate historical narratives and address intergenerational trauma. Their creative practices challenge conventional understandings of archives and forms of commemoration, highlighting the diverse experiences that shape Namibian society and memory cultures. It's a familiar, if troubling parable...known to us as "The Rich Man & Lazarus." Troubling in what it suggests about the afterlife, challenging in what it says about wealth, conflicted, I would argue, in its view of righteousness. But it's the challenging parables that are often the most rich, most compelling. So, let's dive in together.

An unassuming café on Isleta Pueblo just won one of the most sought-after culinary recognitions in New Mexico. Isleta Grill is this year's Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge Champion for their frybread version of a regional delicacy. In northern Wisconsin, this year's wild rice yields are low. The state Department of Natural Resources blames wind damage and heavy rainfall from a series of strong storms. It's part of a pattern of diminished wild rice harvests in recent years. Cherokees cross-bred and cultivated apple varieties when they lived in the southeast U.S., but when the federal government forced a majority of Cherokees to move to Indian Territory (Oklahoma), they left their orchards behind. Now one cultural group is reviving those lost varieties of apples along with the history that goes with it. These are among the topics we'll hear about on The Menu, a special feature of Native America Calling on Indigenous food sovereignty and stories with Andi Murphy.

Esther Zimmerman, Program Chair of Undergraduate Ministry Studies at Lancaster Bible College and global advocate for children, joins us to share her journey in children's ministry and her conviction that investing in kids is one of the most strategic ways to advance the kingdom of God. The digital world's most alarming vulnerabilities take center stage as we dive into how AI is compromising our justice systems and personal privacy. A senior Australian lawyer shocked the court by submitting AI-generated fake legal citations in a murder trial, with both defense and prosecution failing to verify their accuracy—revealing how our cognitive shortcuts create dangerous blindspots when working with artificial intelligence.Privacy breaches continue their relentless march as hundreds of thousands of conversations with Elon Musk's Grok AI chatbot were exposed through Google search results. These breaches, containing sensitive information from drug manufacturing instructions to medical advice, highlight our growing acceptance of data vulnerabilities as the new normal. The question looms: have we become so desensitized to privacy failures that we no longer demand accountability?Meanwhile, a major ransomware attack on kidney dialysis firm DaVita compromised nearly 2.7 million patients' personal and health information, including social security numbers and even images of personal checks. Most troubling was the months-long delay in disclosure, leaving affected individuals vulnerable without their knowledge. On a lighter note, we say goodbye to a technological relic as AOL's dial-up internet service finally powers down after running since 1989, and Nathan shares his ingenious Disney parks hack—booking rides that commonly break down to score unlimited Lightning Lane passes for both Disneyland and California Adventure in a single day.Join us as we examine these technological turning points while enjoying Remus Single Barrel Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
