Even as they promise a better future, politicians continue to lower the bar. Andy Borowitz, comedian and author of “The Borowitz Report,” joins host Krys Boyd to discuss how social media and the 24-hour news cycle have produced politicians who score cheap points without the facts to back them up. Plus, we'll hear about a few absurd anecdotes of egregious behavior. His book is “Profiles in Ignorance: How America's Politicians Got Dumb and Dumber.”

Look at the British press most days, and you'll find that the government and the royals are being skewered and made fun of. The Brits have a long tradition of publicly calling out their leaders for absurdity, stupidity or embarrassing behavior. In America, it seems that part of the population almost embraces this kind of behavior; that rather than calling it out, it votes for it. It celebrates it on talk radio and on Fox. Imagine an entire portion of the electorate for whom ignorance is bliss. What we do have, however, is a healthy tradition of satire but almost entirely on the left. Historically, from the likes of Will Rogers or H.L. Mencken or Ambrose Bierce and in more contemporary times, folks like Mort Sahl and Lenny Bruce and Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Al Franken and Andy Borowitz. Andy is an award-winning comedian, a New York Times bestselling author, a graduate of Harvard College, where he became president of The Harvard Lampoon, and in 1998, he began contributing humor to The New Yorker‘s Shouts & Murmurs and Talk of the Town column. And in 2001, he created The Borowitz Report, a satirical news column that's must reading for anyone that cares about the country. Not only are we living in a time where people are proud of their ignorance, argues the writer and comedian Andy Borowitz, but some of our most educated politicians are now playing down their intelligence as a strategy to get elected. Borowitz, the author of the long-running satirical column The Borowitz Report, examines this phenomenon in his new book, “Profiles of Ignorance: How America's Politicians Got Dumb and Dumber.” “When Trump was elected, a lot of us supposedly knowledgeable people were taken by surprise,” he tells David Remnick. “But the more I researched the past fifty years, the more likely and plausible—and maybe even inevitable—his election was, because he actually had a great deal in common with his forebears.”

Andy Borowitz is an award-winning comedian and New York Times bestselling author. He grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from Harvard College, where he became President of the Harvard Lampoon. During the Arab Oil Embargo, Denis promoted that we do for solar electricity  what Nasa & the defense department did for computer chips– buy in bulk and drive down prices.  There was Good & Bad News. “Ah HA!” moment. “Energy is the capacity to do work.” Drying clothes outside takes as much energy as in the dryer. But we don't pay for the sun and air to dry our clothes.  Best Advice Ever.  When you hit the wall with a complex problem– take a break. Go into nature, do something else. When you come back– you'll have the answer. Personal Success Habit. Pessimism provides no survival advantage– it only leads to giving up. There is always hope– even in the face of incredible challenges (like Churchill in England during WWII). Internet Resources. The Cares Act $3 Trillion was passed with only a few weeks debate to avoid economic catastrophe.
