Steven Moffat returns to the world of Doctor Who with Boom, a tension-filled episode with land mines, Anglican Marines, many a trope from his previous era, and more! The Three Who Rule are well-known Moffat-ites to be sure, but did this measure up to their thoughts and prayers? Plus the media blitz continues with Hollywood Reporter, Variety and Time Magazine (of all things) and a halfhearted stab at the increasingly irrelevant…stats! Ahhh-aahhhhh! The seat thumps as you drop heavily into your chair, stretching out your popcorn and cola in front of you to counter balance your descent. You smile as the lights dim and the projector fires up, “I’ve been waiting for this movie for months” you sputter through a mouthful of popcorn. The opening theme rumbles “Here we go!” And… It’s not that good. Maybe it was the pacing, maybe it was a scene that needed to be deleted or added, or maybe it was Batman v Superman. “It wasn’t awful” you think to yourself as you leave the theatre “I wonder what they could’ve changed to fix it?” Glad you said that, because we’ve often wondered that ourselves. What if the Man of Steel wasn’t such a Man of Heel? What if Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull left out all the monkeys? What if Prometheus made even just the smallest bit of sense? Just a tiny bit?! Each month on I Have Some Notes self proclaimed Movie Experts™ Liam Creswick, Gregg Beever and Scott C. Tell me, dear listener, do you bleed…tears of joy knowing that we're about to fix Justice League?! We had to do something big for the season finale, DC's biggest cinematic event to date seemed most appropriate. All your favourites are here: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, that robot guy and the guy who swims a lot. At long last the super friends are together to take on the classic DC villain…uh, Stephen Wolf? There's certainly no shortage opinions when it comes to Justice League, something that became immediately apparent by all the comments you guys sent us. Some were virtual novels, which was awesome to see. You know who else has opinions about super hero movies? Comic book store owners, and we got one! Brandon Schatz, co-owner of Variant Edition Comics & Culture here in Edmonton, joined the IHSN crew to correct this cinematic mistake. Special thanks to Andrew Phillips for the our cover art for this episode. Andrew's a fantastic artist, we highly recommend checking out his Twitter page. While we're thanking people, thank you, listeners! Your support made season 3 another success and we look forward to see you all back for season 4 in October. In the mean time, send us suggestions for films you want us to tackle and keep watching the skies.

Wonder Women came out in May, and along with it came a wake of good feelings, well wishes, and empowerment among women superhero lovers. Now of course, with anything involving geeky fandoms and women, the trolls came out. First it was whining about the all female screening of Wonder Woman in Texas, and then the just souring of the movie as some sort of “propaganda tool.” Not only that we see it not just with women characters, but also any characters that don’t fit the white male archetype. I’m thinking of Squirrel Girl, Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel, and Black Panther. Why do men, specifically white men, get so riled up with the diversity this industry needs? Well I brought in a lived experience expert, Brandon Schatz, co-owner of Varient Edition comics here in Edmonton. He’s got expert knowledge as to why males behave this way, and it has a lot to do with the history of the matter, he’s also indirectly lived the sexism when opening his store with his wife Danica. Besides that we’re also going to talk about his own life as a business owner, his life as an introvert who helps other introverts, and why he puts his money where his mouth is.

Our January meetup was billed as a debate between Taylor Chadwick of What It Is against Andrea Beça of That's So Maven on how long a podcast should be. "Debate" turned out to be a bit of a strong term. As Taylor says at one point, "it sounds like we're just going to agree the whole time." I accept responsibility. Everyone's just so nice. They do come from different points of view on what works for the length of their own shows. The sweet spot for What It Is — an arts interview show that Taylor does with Chris Cook and Brian Bergum — is 70 minutes. That's So Maven — a show for, by and about female entrepreneurs that Andrea does with Lauren Dary — is about half an hour. Both have sound reasons for that, which you'll hear in the podcast, along with the following points: How your content and format dictate length; How the growth of podcasting has made shorter shows more common; Audience feedback on length and what to do with it; Batch recording vs time-sensitive recording; Preparation vs editing for controlling length. You'll also hear questions and comments from Troy Pavlek of Basket of Yegs, Brandon Schatz of Yegs and Bacon and Doctor Whooch, Nick McQuik of The Quik and Slow Comedy Show, and Chris Chang-Yen Phillips of Let's Find Out. Incidentally, I usually like to keep my podcast to less than half an hour, but this one was so full of good stuff that it's pushing 50 minutes. I guess you win this round,Taylor.  This episode is also available in iTunes, on Google Play, on SoundCloud or on Stitcher. For even more on the art of podcasting, listen to Taylor's conversation with Andrea along with Adam Rozenhart of The Expats and German Villegas of The Modern Manhood Podcast. Many thanks to Edmonton Opera for sending one of our audience members to Cinderella (remember that Elektra is coming in March!). Thanks to Variant Edition for their hospitality, and to CafeRista for the treats. Shout-out to Edmojis, too.  Our next Edmonton Podcasting Meetup is on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Variant Edition. The topic is "How to get started, Part 2," and we'll be drawing on the experience of the team behind The Broadcast, which was in development at our first meetup on getting started, and is now a real thing. It's our season finale! And what a doozy we have as we crunch the numbers and calculate how best to correct the 4th Indiana Jones film. Yes, the one with aliens. It's like Close Encounters of Third Kind and George Lucas had a baby, and Steven Spielberg was left to raise the child on his own. Our guests for the season wrap-up are two noted nerds, comic store owners Danica LeBlanc and Brandon Schatz from Variant Edition. Together we try to solve the essential question…why are there gophers in this movie? Well, that and a few other questions, mostly surrounding what the heck anyone was doing ever. Also, Gregg spends a great deal of time defending Shia LaBeouf. Huge thanks to everyone who made our first season a success! Thanks so much for listening, we'll see you again in the fall.

This episode, we invited Brandon Schatz and Danica Le Blanc — two of the three owners of Edmonton's newest comic store (and the drunken minds behind the Doctor Whooch podcast) — to tell us what Variant Edition will be bringing to the city of Edmonton. Located in Oliver, and having their grand opening on May 2nd (which is also free comic book day), Variant Edition is approaching comic books sales differently. Listen to find out more! Wow, we've done 70 episodes of the Unknown Studio since June 2009. And this one, like many of its predecessors, is a doozy, my friends. After much whining, griping and threatening from Mr. James Leask, we finally acquiesced and invited the Comics! the Blog guys onto the show. (And, truthfully, it didn't take much arm-twisting since we so thoroughly enjoy James and Brandon.) Comics! the Blog, also known as Podcast! the Comics, was launched at the beginning of the year, and James and Brandon only have two rules: be positive, and always strive to improve. The rest you'll need to hear for your own self. Here's the episode breakdown: 0:00: Intro - "LRT robots" 1:06: It's a bird, it's a plane, it's James Leask and Brandon Schatz! 23:30: News on the forthcoming live-show — in telephonic form! 29:11: A Dramatic Reading with Scott C Bourgeois — tips and warnings when playing Dance Dance Revolution 34:56: A contest!
