Her insights on surrendering to the universe and creating a purpose-driven business provide a refreshing perspective on personal and professional growth. Jessica Joines is a former Global CMO turned bestselling author, spiritual coach and international speaker who helps women awaken to their true power and potential. Through speaking, coaching, and a community platform — she empowers women to transform their lives by mastering their own spiritual journey. Jessica is here to help women rise above all forms of fear and limitation and transcend the ego.  Jessica has a unique ability to break down complex and esoteric spiritual principles into simple, step-by-step plans of action, resulting in "DIY soul-work" that is not only practical, but life-altering. Many of these methods manifested during her life-changing, year-long, solo soul journey across Southeast Asia in 2011. That's where she began to wake up to her own soul purpose. A natural teacher and speaker, Jessica is never more herself or connected to her purpose, than when she is in front of an audience. She has keynoted and spoken at iMedia, Advertising Week, WUB Wellness, CRN International Summit, Dmexco and several corporate leadership events, including Rakuten and Starcom. Igniting and energizing audiences around purpose and possibility, it's not uncommon to see a crowd of people gathered around Jessica after she speaks. As the energy and wisdom she brings forth always inspires audiences to want deeper guidance on how to navigate life's challenges. In May 2021, Jessica launched her live coaching show, Soul Purpose, with the popular online spiritual media network, Unity Radio. Soul Purpose keeps Jessica on her toes as listeners call in live to receive coaching guidance on their most critical life questions and challenges. Soul Purpose can be found on all major podcasting platforms, including iTunes and Spotify. Additionally, Jessica regularly shares spiritual lessons and tools on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook.  In January 2021, Jessica launched the Women's Purpose Community, an expansion of the incredibly successful Women's Purpose Retreat, which she launched in 2018. WPC is a community of executive women who crave a safe-space to do the deeply intimate work of self-discovery.  In sum, Jessica is helping to bring an awakened-mindset to where it's needed most, Corporate America. Jessica's work has been celebrated in publications such as Forbes, Marie Claire, Thrive Global and MediaPost. She holds an M.S. in Communications from Cornell University. Takeaways Jessica's journey reflects a shift from fear to love. She emphasizes the importance of inner transformation. Women are encouraged to trust their own truths. Perception is a powerful choice in shaping reality. Surrendering to the universe is key in business. Attraction, not promotion, is essential for success. Building deep relationships is crucial for women leaders. Future leaders should prioritize doing what they love. Self-exploration is vital for discovering passions. If you've been in the cable tech industry for more than five minutes, there's a good chance you know Bob Gold, the super-energetic PR/marketing guy and Cable TV Pioneer who's been representing cable tech companies and startups since the late 1990s. Gold got his agency start representing a video remultiplexing company (sexy, right?) called Imedia. Since then, off the top of this hack's head, he's flacked for is currently flacking for companies such as Canal Plus, Pioneer (back when it was making cable boxes and interactive guides), Media One, Incanta and ClearBand (we'll get to that those in more detail), Plume, the recently rechristened National Content & Technology Association (NCTC) and Vidgo, a virtual multichannel video programming distributor (vMVPD) that competes in the market with the likes of YouTube TV, Hulu, Philo and Sling TV.Full disclosure – he and the crew at Bob Gold & Associates have pitched a ton of stories to me about many of them over the years. Bob and I don't always see eye-to-eye, but I've written about many of them over the years. And Gold did nominate me for the Cable TV Pioneers class of 2018, so perhaps I wasn't as big of a jerk to him, his staff and his clients over the years as I thought I was. Hey, I tried. Usually news tied to Gold has to do with a company he represents, but this time it's all about Bob – his agency recently turned 25-years-old. He got that up and running about the time I started writing about the industry and had to Google "DOCSIS" to figure out what the heck I was about to do my first story on.So, we've got a lot of industry stuff in common, enough that it made sense to get together on the podcast and hop in the "Wayback Machine" to reminisce about the last two decades-plus.You can download a lightly edited transcript of the podcast here. If you want to skip around and listen, here's a timestamped list of the convo: How Gold and the crew celebrated the silver anniversary. And, yes, a PR crisis did interfere (1:15) How Gold, whose background includes marketing and communications exec roles with major cable programmers, turned a disaster into a new career as the head of an agency that focused on the crazy world of tech – and other stuff (5:50) How a top exec of a company didn't even believe in a fiber-based product that was being pitching to the press (12:30) How startups like Incanta and ClearBand had great ideas about streaming TV to devices but were just too early with respect to tech or content rights… or both (14:00) How Gold pitched me on a cable theft story, and I royally screwed up the embargo and the bad guy got away (15:30) Which client was Gold's greatest completed Hail Mary (18:30) Why Dan Aykroyd was Gold's favorite celeb to work with, back when video-on-demand was just appearing on the cable scene (20:30) Why Gold, at one time, viewed Amazon Prime as the most infuriating organization (24:00) Gold's biggest gain. After the fact, he told me to add Plume to the list (26:44) Gold's proudest moment – next to being my guest on the podcast, of course (27:30)— Jeff Baumgartner, Senior Editor, Light Reading Hosted on Acast. Glidr aims to help consumers navigate a sea of streaming options

What are you watching? It's a question that tends to pop up among family, friends and coworkers. The water cooler may be a corporate relic, but thanks to the rise and popularity of free and paid streaming services, the video landscape is certainly rife with water cooler-worthy TV shows, series and movies. Perhaps too many. A startup called Glidr Inc. wants to help consumers cut through the clutter and zero in on content that their social media circles enjoy and recommend. It's trying to tackle that challenge with a free app that, following several months of testing, recently launched on Android and iOS devices. The general idea is to help consumers discover content they might be interested in watching and to help them manage the various streaming services they use and pay for. But rather than relying heavily on AI and machine learning techniques to surface and recommend content, Glidr's platform is powered in part by what a user's family and friends are watching and recommending."When your friend recommends something or your family member recommends something to watch, you're probably going to watch it," contends Glidr CEO Adam Tom, who recently joined the Light Reading Podcast to discuss the company and broader trend impacting the streaming sector. "There's all these great recommendation engines out there. But when your family or friend says something, that's really a strong recommendation." Glidr's ranks include vets from the cable industry and video tech industries. Adam Tom is late of Imedia, Terayon and RGB Networks (sold to Imagine Communications in 2015), and more recently was with Samsung, heading up North American engineering for smart TVs as well as engineering for Samsung's connected TV ad business. Also joining the podcast is Christopher Lee, Glidr's product director. Lee is a video engineering vet previously with Gemstar TV Guide and Comcast, where he aided in the development of products for the operator's X1 video platform. Saul Colt is the Founder and Creative Director at The Idea Integration Company. In his career he has been named as one of the iMEDIA 25: Internet Marketing Leaders & Innovators as well as been called one of Canada's best community builders/experiential marketers. NYT Best selling author and Internet Pioneer Chris Brogan once referred to Saul as “exactly who you want representing your company” and that message has been echoed by media properties ranging from Inc to Forbes Magazine.Takeaway points:The things that businesses do wrong in community building and influence: First, businesses confuse the audience for influence. They assume that an influence with a big number of following is a great choice to increase revenue. Where in fact, it's less about the audience and more about influencers. An influence who has 300 followers, but are the exact target you are looking for, and buy your products and services are just as valuable as half a million non-targeted followers.  The other thing - they get the definition of Influencer all wrong. There is no such thing as Influencer - with context. You cannot be influential globally across demographics.  Third: Business thinks that Influencer marketing is a magic bullet that will solve all the problems. Influence is only a part of a puzzle, part of marketing, part of PR promotion. When you work with influencers, you buy their following, but you don't own their following.  Find people who are already your customers. Find people who already love your product. Use your channels to amplify them to get more followers. Make your own customers or your influencers for them to stick around in years because they love your product and services.  Make sure to do your Influencer Marketing properly. As Influencers are taken as disposable, after having them to promote once or twice, they are gone.  The philosophy behind a Marketing Stunt is like a polite slap on your customer's face to wake them up. Have 3 to 4 great marketing stunts a year. These are designed to accelerate attention and think of what is next to be done.  Saul used an Apple as an example. He mentioned that the Iphone company knows when their company is getting boring. They know when to announce the next Iphone unit. It's all about owning the anticipation.  Influencer Marketing is a paid referral. Once you get the customer's attention, that is when you want to wow them, earn their trust, make them feel home and blow them away with your brand personality.  Listening is really important because that's where you get your insights. Listening is absolutely key. Listen, respond and create experience. It's all about human connection Be authentic, it has to be real. Authenticity builds community. Having someone with a magnetic personality in your team, replaces the budget. If you have money with someone magnetic, that is great. Products can be magnetic too.  How Covid affects building a community? Some communities got super tighter, more time in their hands. Some communities shrunk, turned off. Brands should start investing in a Word of Mouth experience now because people have been stuck at home and hungry for new experiences.Get connected with Saul Colt at www.theideaintegration.com

SV Academy was named the #2 Most Innovative Education Program by Fast Company. Prior to SV Academy, Rahim was the CEO and Co-Founder of Involver, an enterprise social media platform, which was acquired by Oracle and is now part of the Oracle Marketing Cloud. Post sale, he was a key account executive supporting the global field and inside sales organizations. Previously, he founded a web hosting company with his friend Husein while still in high school. Its sale (for $1.5m!) was negotiated while writing his senior year exams. Because of life circumstances, Rahim didn't end up going to a four-year college, or receiving his bachelors. A few years back, Rahim received an Empact 100 Award at the White House from Startup America and The Kauffman Foundation. Rahim was also named one of the Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under 30 in America by Inc. Rick Parkhill joins the show to talk about his time as the founder and prior CEO of iMedia Communications, which launched in 2001. Rick talks about how iMedia helped build community and produced an event where everyone was encouraged to drop their agendas and just connect for the greater good of the industry. Rick was a founding executive at Interactive Marketing, Inc. and founded Digitrends, along with InfoText and Brand Storytelling.   Takeaways: ● iMedia emerged in the midst of the internet explosion in 1999 when many of the internet companies washed away. ● Their first day of business was September 11, 2001, and after that major tragedy, they moved forward with building jobs for people and creating commerce for the community. ● Although he will never take all the credit, Rick definitely helped build the digital marketing industry, along with the help of many other iMedia longtime moguls. ● Rick discusses doing a roadshow for clients to explain what search was, and how it would impact them. ● The iMedia events were a space where people were invited to leave their agendas behind and connect in a nonpolitical realm. ● Rick handles big egos like none other, and he has some pretty good stories about them at iMedia events! ● Rick sold iMedia, and it did change in the way of personality and feel, but that is to be expected anytime a sale takes place. ● There are still a plethora of opportunities out there for content creators to get hired by brands. They are constantly looking for professionals to create entertaining and informative material for their product or service.   Quotes: ● “There are massive egos at play, like entitled obnoxious jerks, like me!” — Kevin  ● “We were true to our mission, to help the industry grow in a healthy way.” ● “You serve the community, and as an event producer your industry will do fine.”   Mentioned in This Episode: iMedia  Rick Parkhill LinkedIn Brand Storytelling

Check out this episode where I have a chat and a whisky with Ryf Quail, Managing Director of Comexposium for Australia and New Zealand. Ryf has a super impressive career across publishing, media, marketing and digital. A business man and entrepreneur, and most importantly, he is a great guy. We chat about whisky, what keeps him going, what brings him mindfulness, his thoughts around search, the retail dominator that is Amazon and the trends coming through in retail. A few favourites:   1. Brands diversifying Ryf "It's really about so much changes going on and how data is really informing so much. I mean, Crayola has launched a makeup brand.  Me "Crayola, the crayons?" Ryf "Yes. It doesn't sound very intuitive, but obviously, they know something about their customers and say, They'd buy makeup." Me "Actually, I think it makes complete sense because if you've seen some of these makeup tutorials, it looks like these girls are putting crayons on their face." Ryf "I think we should start at the positive place." 2. How will google play in voice search? Ryf "Google dominates search. It still dominates search because it's product is better than anyone else, right? And no one really can surpass them in that text-based search. That's fantastic. But voices come along, and it's very hard for me to look at that model and go, Is there a commercial model around voice? Now Amazon's got voice, but they don't need a cost per click generated model because everything that they ask for on Amazon points to their store. So it's the utility that drives the retail purchase. Whereas Google doesn't have anything behind it. Their whole transaction's around the search transaction."   3.Stalky Ads Ryf "I think that whole tech space is a bit like — and I use this analogy a lot — It's a bit like, when the library puts in a system to stop you from taking books out, you threw the books out the window to get around the system.... the point is, it's no different, say 30% of Australians, now thats a finger in the air number, are using ad blockers. Now, one of the big claims that native ads is that it doesn't get blocked. Me "Do you think thats going to grow?" Ryf "Yes, lets take a step back. One of the biggest failings of the ad industry digitally is that the ads are shit. So the consumer's gone, I don't want to see them. So therefore I am going to put in blocking software. And, they are either creatively bad or they're creepy in the way they behave because they're being a bit stalky."

Our January meetup was billed as a debate between Taylor Chadwick of What It Is against Andrea Beça of That's So Maven on how long a podcast should be. "Debate" turned out to be a bit of a strong term. As Taylor says at one point, "it sounds like we're just going to agree the whole time." I accept responsibility. Everyone's just so nice. They do come from different points of view on what works for the length of their own shows. The sweet spot for What It Is — an arts interview show that Taylor does with Chris Cook and Brian Bergum — is 70 minutes. That's So Maven — a show for, by and about female entrepreneurs that Andrea does with Lauren Dary — is about half an hour. Both have sound reasons for that, which you'll hear in the podcast, along with the following points: How your content and format dictate length; How the growth of podcasting has made shorter shows more common; Audience feedback on length and what to do with it; Batch recording vs time-sensitive recording; Preparation vs editing for controlling length. You'll also hear questions and comments from Troy Pavlek of Basket of Yegs, Brandon Schatz of Yegs and Bacon and Doctor Whooch, Nick McQuik of The Quik and Slow Comedy Show, and Chris Chang-Yen Phillips of Let's Find Out. Incidentally, I usually like to keep my podcast to less than half an hour, but this one was so full of good stuff that it's pushing 50 minutes. I guess you win this round,Taylor.  This episode is also available in iTunes, on Google Play, on SoundCloud or on Stitcher. For even more on the art of podcasting, listen to Taylor's conversation with Andrea along with Adam Rozenhart of The Expats and German Villegas of The Modern Manhood Podcast. Meet Tyler Butler, the always-learning digital marketing strategist and musician who explores social media on the new podcast Don’t Call Me A Guru. Don't Call Me A Guru is a monthly conversation about social media strategy between Tyler, who works at MacEwan University, and Linda Hoang, who used to work at NAIT and now works at Calder Bateman. They met kibbitzing with each other online, and now we get to listen in on their "conversations we would have had anyway," and learn a lot about social media in the process. Tyler also produces Clock Radio, a podcast that tells stories about staff and students at MacEwan. It started because there seemed to be a lot of good stuff left over from stories done for the MacEwan website, and it has turned into quite an interesting show, whether you have anything to do with MacEwan or not. Music is responsible for getting Tyler into social media in the first place. Facebook events turned out to be a powerful tool to get people to shows, and he also experimented with some crazy content marketing of sorts for Old Ugly, a beloved local label. You'll hear all about that in this episode, along with how time-consuming yet necessary editing is; how to get internal buy-in for a podcast within an organization; the power of planning; the necessity of setting attainable goals; and much more. This episode is also available in iTunes, on Google Play, on SoundCloud or on Stitcher. Tyler made the following recommendations: Writer and filmmaker Lizzie Derksen's website; The Edmonton City as Museum Project, both the podcast and the blog; Let's Find Out, historian laureate Chris Chang-Yen Phillips's podcast; Doug Hoyer, the musician who has written many Edmonton podcast theme songs (and who launches his latest album on Feb. 11 at the Empress); The Expats, Adam Rozenhart's interview show with Canadians abroad, including his episode with Doug Hoyer! You can find Don't Call Me A Guru on iTunes, Google Play and SoundCloud, and is coming soon to Stitcher. The show is @dontcallmeaguru on Twitter and Instagram. Clock Radio is on iTunes, Google Play and SoundCloud. You can find Tyler himself at @tylerjackbutler on Instagram and Twitter, and that's his name on Snapchat, too. Also, both Tyler and Linda are speaking at the iMedia social media conference on March 10 and 11, so if you want to soak up their wisdom in real life, you should go! Hello everyone, thank you for joining us.. My name is Daryl Urbanski - your host as always.. and today we are joined by a very special man.. A man who has been recognized with many awards for his accomplishments, Brian Wong.   You may know him or recognize his name from being:   One of Canada's “Top 20 Under 20” One of Business Insider's “Top 25 Under 25 in Silicon Valley,” One of Forbes' “30 under 30” for three years now One of Mashable's “Top 5 Entrepreneurs to Watch”   Plus being featured on other noteworthy lists such as   iMedia “25” AdAge “Creativity Top 50” The “30 Under 30 in Advertising” and “18 Most Important People in Mobile Advertising”.  His company has generated over $10million dollars while helping everyone around the table.. Himself, his investors, his employees, partners and of course, the end mobile users.. His company Kiip (pronounced “keep”) redefines how brands connect with consumers through a rewards platform that targets “achievement moments” in mobile games and apps. So your coupon or whatever, is offered as a reward once they beat a level or finish their 3-mile run. This is done with something Brian calls: “Moments-based marketing” as he believes, when it comes to mobile advertising, impressions & click-through rates are ‘stale' metrics'. This innovative approach to mobile marketing creates meaningful engagements between users, developers and advertisers. And he must be onto something as his company is thriving in an industry where the vast majority are not. His company Kiip has been recognized by Forbes as one of the “4 Hot Online Ad Companies to Put on Your Watch List,” plus the Dow Jones “FasTech50” and listed on Fast Company's “50 Most Innovative Companies.” And if as if that wasn't impressive enough, Brian received his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of British Columbia at age 18, after skipping four grades between kindergarten and graduating high school. He was also once the youngest person to ever receive venture capital funding. Today he's here to tell us about the future of mobile advertising and his ‘moments-based marketing' as well as answer questions to important challenges many of you listening might be facing.. Things from how to get financing in today's fundraising environment, how to build & scale a sales team.. or if you're just starting out, how to get your first customers and some monetization strategies… Brian, thank you for joining us today.. How're you doing my friend?   --- Mission Statement: My mission is to create 200 new multi-millionaire business owners who solve world problems with entrepreneurship. How? You'll do better when you know better.   Would it help you to have a mentor who can cut your learning curve by sharing their mistakes with you so you could avoid them? Would it help you to talk to that mentor and learn how they shifted their mindset to allow success to happen in the first place? Would it help you to hear them talk to other high-level entrepreneurs about their journeys, their mistakes and how they overcame their challenges to create the lives and financial success they desire? The Best Business Podcast was created for you to have all this in one place. If you like it, please subscribe, give an honest review and share with a friend you think will benefit so I may serve you both together.   "Your success is my success." -- Daryl Urbanski

Dr. J's guest co-host Spider Graham invited Kevin M. Ryan to join in discussing the book they wrote together, Taking Down Goliath: The Digital Marketing Strategy for Beating Competitors with 100 Time Your Spending Power. Listening to this show is a great way to get to know the authors of this book, which begins with some goal clarification work to lay the basis for developing strategy and learning the tactics of using particular digital tools. Kevin explains his desire to write a cross-disciplinary, holistic guide for small businesses in contrast to the many narrowly focused marketing books that were readily available. By emphasizing overall strategy and providing many examples, the book makes it possible to see where the various digital channels can play a role in marketing within a limited budget. Because of the Internet, anyone can now engage with potential customers, finding out what their needs and interests are. It is no longer necessary to have deep pockets to film an infomercial—YouTube is available. You can invite viewers to let you know by posting comments what they think of your message. Because of search engines and alerts, you can find almost anyone commenting about your product or service and respond to comments, whether they be positive or critical. Personal interaction takes time but is an excellent way of fostering “organic growth.” While Goliath-like companies can spend fortunes reaching wide, general audiences, the Davids use shrewd reasoning to identify a small target and deliver precisely aimed, individually tailored messages. And that is where digital marketing excels. Kevin Ryan founded the strategic consulting firm Motivity Marketing in April, 2007. Kevin is known throughout the world as an interactive marketing thought leader, particularly in the search marketing arena. Today's Motivity is a group of professionals  focused on thought leadership, innovation and exacting tactical execution in a modern digital advertising agency environment. Over decades in the business, he formerly has served as global content director for Search Engine Watch and Search Engine Strategies, VP, Interactive Media for the Interpublic Group agency. Wahlstrom Interactive, and CEO of Kinetic Results, an Advertising Age Top 20 search engine marketing firm. Directly feeding our marketplace intelligence, Kevin has published hundreds of articles on search and interactive marketing in industry publications such as Advertising Age, iMedia, MediaPost, ClickZ and Search Engine Watch. His insights are universally acknowledged as best in class by marketers everywhere. His former client roster and personal case history includes market-leading brands Rolex Watch, USA; State Farm Insurance; Farmers Insurance; Minolta Corporation; Samsung Electronics America; Toyota Motor Sales, USA; Panasonic Services; and the Hilton Hotels brands.Widely quoted and recognized as an industry expert, Kevin has appeared often in our most trusted news outlets: ABC, CNN, The Associated Press, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, New York Times and numerous others.   Rob ‘Spider' Graham is a 20 year veteran of the digital media buying, selling and production industries and is currently the CEO of Trainingcraft, LLC, a company providing digital advertising strategies, marketing and sales consulting and training solutions to publishers and advertisers. They provide industry leading training specifically for publisher sales teams through their CertifiedSalesTraining.com site and have just recently rolled out a training and education community for digital marketers and advertisers at spidergraham.com.
