Jim welcomes award-winning journalist and New York Times best-selling author Keith O'Brien to discuss his new book, “Heartland: A Forgotten Place, an Impossible Dream, and the Miracle of Larry Bird." First, Keith and Jim discuss Larry Bird's unsung supporting cast on the 1979 Indiana State team (14:42). Next, they cover the "what if" scenario of Larry Bird playing all four seasons of his college career for Bobby Knight at Indiana University, before deciding who the GOAT of Indiana basketball is between John Wooden, Larry Bird, and Oscar Robertson (19:06). Finally, they debate whether we will ever see another Larry Bird again in college basketball (40:06).
Keith joins Sports Talk to discuss his new book Heartland: A Forgotten Place, an Impossible Dream, and the Miracle of Larry Bird.

Keith O’Brien joins Stugotz to discuss his upcoming book Heartland: A Forgotten Place, an Impossible Dream, and the Miracle of Larry Bird, a deep dive into the roots, rise, and lasting legacy of Larry Bird. O’Brien shares untold stories about Bird’s upbringing in small-town Indiana and reveals how close we came to never knowing the story of Larry Bird, who could have faded into obscurity after leaving Bobby Knight’s Indiana program. Could a 1978–79 Indiana State team happen in today's college basketball, and why were the Sycamores never able to capitalize on having one of the best basketball players ever? This episode includes, among other things, "the most French thing editor Chris could find on the Internet." Can you guess which book that might be for? If not, you better listen, because we've got four very different books, despite two of them being written by women named Rebecca. Maybe we should do an episode in the future where all the books are written by someone with the same first name! Or one where all of them are set in Ipswich, MA! Put a pin in that. Anyway, this fortnight, we read: "Murder Bimbo," by Rebecca Novack "The Memory of Babel," by Christelle Dabos "Family Drama," by Rebecca Fallon "Heartland: A Forgotten Place, an Impossible Dream, and the Miracle of Larry Bird," by Keith O'Brien What sound effects did we give each of these books? You'll just have to listen and find out! Oh, and if you're listening to this before March 10, 2026, you should come to the Beverly Farms Library and hear us chat with Keith O'Brien!
This week on the Daly Dose, we're officially tipping off our March Madness prep with a deep dive into the legend of the "Hick from French Lick."We are thrilled to welcome New York Times bestselling author Keith O'Brien to discuss his cinematic new book, Heartland: A Forgotten Place, an Impossible Dream, and the Miracle of Larry Bird. Here's what's on deck:The Making of a Miracle: Keith pulls back the curtain on the research and grit required to capture the soul of 1970s Indiana. We relive the magic of Indiana State's lightning-in-a-bottle season that changed college basketball forever. We look at the profound personal hurdles and "forgotten" upbringing that forged Larry Bird's legendary mental toughness.Keith also shares one specific, never-before-heard story that perfectly encapsulates why there will never be another No. 33!

Disneyland Handcrafted documentary debuts January 22, 2026 on Disney Plus and Disney YouTube, and I had the extraordinary opportunity to interview filmmaker Leslie Iwerks at the Walt Disney Studios Lot in Burbank, California about her new film. "Disneyland Handcrafted reveals the extraordinary artistry and grit it took hundreds of craftspeople to bring Walt Disney's impossible dream project of Disneyland to fruition – from groundbreaking to Opening Day on July 17, 1955." (Disney Plus). "An Oscar and Emmy nominated filmmaker, Leslie Iwerks comes from a family steeped in Disney legacy. The granddaughter of Ub Iwerks (Walt Disney's original animator and designer/co-creator of Mickey Mouse) and the daughter of Don Iwerks (a Disney camera technician and inventor), Leslie is the producer and director of the new documentary film." Christmas is a time of hope. It's hard not to be lifted by the season, for all but the Grinchiest of us. (Yes, I made up that word!) The hope of Christmas is more than twinkling lights and seasonal goodwill. Embedded in this story is Joseph's dream (actually four of them); and that dream is good news for those who struggle with the impossible. Your circumstances may not magically change this Sunday⏤but you may leave with an unexpected gift. First time listening to our podcast? We'd like to get to know you! Welcome to a special Monday episode on the Finding Mastery channel.Every once in a while, we come across a story or a person that moves us in a profound way — and this is one of those moments.Recently, I was invited by Aaron Lazar to join him on his new podcast, Impossible Dreams. Aaron is an incredible human — a Broadway and television actor, singer, and storyteller — who's facing ALS with extraordinary courage, humor, and grace. He's also pushing toward an almost unthinkable goal: to become the 64th person on record to ever reverse symptoms from ALS.I enjoyed the conversation so much that I knew I wanted to share it with you here on Finding Mastery — to raise awareness, and to honor Aaron's message about purpose, connection, and resilience in the face of life's hardest challenges.Takeaways from this episode:Why mastery of self — not just mastery of craft — changes the way we meet adversity. How awareness, self-talk, and gratitude can shift what's possible in any moment. What it means to move from “my team” to “the team.”How purpose and love become anchors when life feels uncertain. The small, daily practices that help us stay grounded, connected, and alive to what matters most.Enjoy this conversation with Aaron and myself — and let it remind you of the strength that lives inside all of us, even in the storm.____________________________________________________Links & ResourcesSubscribe to our Youtube Channel for more conversations at the intersection of high performance, leadership, and wellbeing: https://www.youtube.com/c/FindingMasteryGet exclusive discounts and support our amazing sponsors! This week, Eric reminded us that the journey of following Jesus is both impossible and essential. Our church's Growth Path—Endearing, Attending, Belonging, and Growing—describes the part we can do, while trusting God to do what only He can. We shine light in our community, create a church unchurched people love to attend, engage in meaningful community, and embrace lifelong transformation. Ultimately, the call is to become like Jesus, for others. It's a path marked by trust, repentance, and dependence on God's Spirit, who alone transforms us into Christ's image.

In order to get the most out of life, I want to feel it all. The birth, the rise, the crest of the wave, And the calm that comes after the fall. ☉Happy Total Lunar Eclipse in Pisces! At least I hope it has elements of happiness in it for you. It will certainly bring illumination to your inner world and increase your self-knowledge while also giving you a little "homework." That homework will be to use the next two weeks preparing for the Solar eclipse! In this video I share how to do that preparation but perhaps an example will make it more clear. Having both the Sun in Virgo (health) and the Moon opposite (habits), this is an excellent time to look at your diet, your exercise routine, how much you drink/smoke, and any other habits you have that are both unhealthy and "semi conscious." These health habits that we have (or lack) affect us in very many ways beyond the obvious. If you eat/drink/smoke too much, your body knows it and you know it and on some level you are disappointed with yourself. As you continue to ignore your inner promptings to change your behavior patterns you distance yourself from your guidance and weaken the connection to your higher self. This can lead to the point where you begin to doubt yourself and your guidance! You can start making more and more of your decisions based on materialistic/3D/left brain analysis to the point where you feel cut off from Spirit. This can continue down the road to even feeling abandoned by Spirit. However, by simply tuning back in, following the little prompts you receive multiple times a day guiding you toward healthy choices, you are breaking old habits and preparing for the major Solar Eclipse download! Again, when it comes to Uranus stationing to go retrograde, I like to think that he has covered some new ground, stepped out of Taurus into Gemini, looked around a bit, felt it out, and said "Ha! I see that if I really want to revolutionize the left brain of planet earth (communication, travel, education, social media etc.), I'll need to run back into Taurus in order to finish things up over there. Taurus is "things" like values, priorities, and self-love. We're all going to need some radical self-love and some spiritual values and priorities if we're going to evolve the collective mind. So let's rethink a few things over the next 6 months or so and Uranus for some guidance! You gotta check out "The Impossible Dream!" https://youtu.be/zbgTUwUP-ew?si=QJSTyUwSBDSukafB Come join me in the Dominican Republic next March! https://bit.ly/45gxeDfSo Much Love,Kaypacha☉

New course record at the Leadville 100 Miler in 15:12:30, 14 minutes ahead of last year. What just happened?! We are still processing it all, and this episode shares every detail while it's all fresh in our sleep-deprived minds.2 weeks ago, David said there was zero chance that he was going to race Leadville. He was still processing the very public failure at Western States. He felt like he just wasn't ready.Megan had other ideas. This episode tells the story of a surreal day that still seems a bit like an impossible dream that came to life, including sharing the final 23 miles together. David would have estimated the chances of this day at 1 in 10,000. But maybe love changes the odds in ways that science can't always account for. Also, Megan predicted the exact time down to the minute. Because of course she did.We love you all so much.
