How Excellence Makes You Money(Originally published on September 11, 2018)The Pursuit of Excellence is a CrossFit hallmark, but it is not unique to the fitness industry. From the start, we’ve written that excellence in coaching means great results for your clients. Dr. Brian Strump is currently my only return guest on the podcast. Maybe that's cause he literally owns the gym a few miles down the road from me and I have easy access to him - maybe because he's a smart motherfucker and I like talking to those kind of people. Either way, since our last podcast together, Brian has been busy working to help entrepreneurs in the clinical space (chiro, massage, etc) as well as other service industries. Enjoy!

Brian Strump is a Chiropractor (and stud!) in Charlotte, North Carolina over 5 years ago and has created a WILDLY successful model. Interestingly, his business is now 80% Fitness, and just 20% Chiropractic. Plus, Brian is truly a “business owner”, rather than just working “in” his business. This guy. Brian Strump is probably one of my favorite gym owners. Honest as hell, blunt as fuck...but he's a Michigan fan, so he's dead to me during college football season. But that aside, awesome guy, wise business owner and is constantly providing practical, valuable advice to gym owners. Best part? Brian is technically a competitor of mine. We own competing businesses in the same city. Yet, we share idea, equipment and even employees. See. We play nice. Why can't you and your surrounding competition?
Dr. Brian Strump is the owner of Live Active Charlotte, CrossFit Steele Creek, and a few other companies. An early adopter of the prescriptive model, Brian was one of the first to offer hybrid memberships in a CrossFit gym. His current top membership rate is $919 per month.Part of my mission on this podcast is to change the perspective of scope for other CrossFit affiliates: to show where the high bars and gold standards sit and demonstrate to listeners what's possible. Just like seeing an athlete deadlift 600 lb. and then run a sub-six-minute mile, we all need models of what's possible at the top end. If you set your rates based on what other local affiliates are doing, or what you think "the market will bear," you're probably guessing. I did it too. And it's probably killing you, like it almost did me.Obviously, you can't jump from a $150 membership to a $1,000 membership overnight—at least, not with the same service, and not with the same mindset. What makes a difference? A larger view of your business. And mentorship.
Brian Strump of CrossFit Steele Creek shares his experience with corporate wellness, the benefits of it and some of the biggest lessons he's learned.
