Episode 5 of FBoy Island brought back the biggest FBoy Bromance we've ever witnessed. Garrett "escapes" Limbro and heads to help his boy(friend) Casey, "tells" Mia his thoughts of Peter, and then steps the hell out of the Filla. Will we ever see him again??? Tamaris feels some type of way towards the bromance. But does it last? (It's Casey... So we all know the answer to that.) Mercedes and Louise do some "sexy" crafts. Braydon & DeWayne "battle rap" for Mia's heart. Producer Plant Austin tries to take more shots on his way out. And a nice guy with FBoy tendencies is let go. "He likes to throw his toys and make a lot of noise. He's the worst of all the boys. He's Caillou." You asked for it, and the Should They Watch it ladies dove headfirst into the notorious Canadian children's tv show Caillou. And they didn't come out smelling like roses! Laura and Kara agree with the millions of parents who despise everything from the earworm of a theme song to the petulant behavior of its main character. As a children's play therapist, Laura does her best to find something redeeming in Caillou and turns up some limited examples of empathy. The ladies discuss that it is normal for children to behave selfishly and inappropriately according to societal norms but should outgrow it, barring any early trauma. The problem with Caillou is that the character's behavior appears to be acceptable and even effective at getting what he wants. The parents are also pushovers and enablers who seem to have no interest in their own happiness! Whoa. Not great. The hosts then revisit a study discussed in their review of Spongebob Squarepants that indicates children's executive functions can be negatively affected by watching certain tv shows, (but Caillou was the show that improved their behavior! What??). The internet would beg to differ and provide many of those anecdotes online. On a lighter note, there are some fantastic Caillou memes online generated by very creative parents, likely being held hostage by crying toddlers who now refuse to watch anything else. The ladies discuss some of their favorites and, at 39:18, go through their favorite online roasts of the title character. Why has Canada subjected the world to this show when overall, they seem to be a friendly and well-adjusted group? Is the answer in this National Post article that suggests outsiders are concerned Canadian parents are raising a generation of psychopaths or are all too baked to care? Unlikely. Kids like mindless entertainment, and tv keeps them busy, which gives parents a break. Caillou certainly qualifies as mindless entertainment. Final thoughts: Positives? No gore or scary moments. Suggestions for improvement? Don't do the show at all! Watch or don't watch? DON'T WATCH Sidebars: Kara's young son finds the winter Olympics unintentionally entertaining less because of the sports themselves but because the athletes all appear to be intentionally thrusting their butts out given their tight outfits and herky-jerky movements. "Look at my butt" becomes a running theme for the episode. Tinder Swindler gets rave reviews, while Sex In The City does not. Both agreed that it's essential for women to unlearn the Prince Charming societal construct. Independence is vital for success and happiness. Kurlee and Franko Podcast Episode 24 - Anti Calliou Ninjas
During the pandemic, our kids watched a lot of children's programming and we watched it with them. Do we have some thoughts? Yes, yes we do. From the cloying cuteness of Wonder Pets to half-assed YouTube content farms, from the incessant whining of Calliou to the obnoxiousness of Blippi, there is a lot of bullshit out there. What the hell is up with SpongeBob? Does the Cat in the Hat condition your children to be kidnapped? Join us as we praise the good, dunk on the bad, and laugh at the ugly shows that our kids love to watch. And watch. And watch...
In this TGON podcast episode, I'm getting to combine my two loves in life: The Game of Nerds and childcare. For those who don't know, my day job is as a childcare coach and nanny for families in the San Francisco Bay Area. All my nanny kids know me as the nerdy nanny who is fluent in superheroes and television shows. Marie happens to be a fellow nanny and podcast co-host of sheNANNYgans Podcast. We sat down to chat about our love of and expertise in children's television. The pandemic has caused a lot of parents to lean on television to survive the day. This episode isn't to shame anyone or remind you of what the official research says about kids who watch tv. If anything, this episode is to give you more quality options and remind you of what's really important. After all, the most common question I'm asked is what are some good educational shows for my child to watch? Marie and I dive right in and talk about some of the shows that we grew up loving. We were children of the '90s so Nick Jr and Nickelodeon shows were staples. A lot of it was frankly slapstick comedy that went way over our heads. Blues Clues was about the only educational thing in there along with Teletubbies and Barney. But that's the sad reality of children's television choices today, there is an overwhelming amount of shows out there and only a few are actual gems. As a mother and nanny, I went into motherhood with the "no screen" mentality but that was quickly thrown out the window when the pandemic hit. The staples in our house are Sesame Street, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Bluey, and Daniel Tiger. The one thing I have become aware of since becoming a parent is which shows Marvel is watching vs how much she's watching. The choices though are endless and parents are overwhelmed. At the end of the day, it comes down to knowing your kid, their age, and what they need. Sometimes you need educational goodness and other times you need mindless garbage to escape it. Let's be real here when was the last time you watched an "educational" show? If you are looking for great education children's television shows, I've put together a great list for you. Sesame Street is always my go-to good show. With over 50 seasons, you seriously can't go wrong. We do discuss how scary the first few seasons are in terms of Big Bird's looks and how creepy Elmo was in the beginning. I express my love for Gonger and Monster Foodies. We also note how the new pop culture references and celebrities are getting parents hooked. I eventually convince Marie to check out The Late Show with Elmo, and she continues her rant about how The Count is the most underutilized character on the block. We talk about the pros and cons of HBO getting Sesame Street, and at least both agree that Sesame Street looks good with HBO money. If Sesame Street is my go-to show, PBS would be my go-to network. We have both the PBS video and game app downloaded and are huge fans. It is available to everyone and FREE, but it houses a lot of amazing series. Most of the television shows are based on book series, which could help foster good reading skills. Kids are more motivated to read and learn if it's with a character they enjoy. Some great series to watch are Molly of Denali, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum, Cat in The Hat, Arthur, Curious George, Super Why, Clifford, to name a few. There are some problem shows and questions we still can't answer after years of torture. Here are the highlights: Our problem with Toodles and how everyone is Mickey Mouse's bitch. Mickey if you want something done, do it yourself. Calliou, that whiny bitch. There is an understood rule in the nanny and parent world that Calliou is the absolute worst. He's whiny. He's horrible. Thank God he's canceled. Peppa Pig, just as annoying and whining as Calliou and frankly, looks like a penis. Cocomelon, we still don't understand the appeal of it.

Intro: Minutes 0 to 5:15 We’re on a new schedule where we’ll be on for three weeks and off a week. We’ll have episodes out the 17th and 24th this month, January, and will be off the 31st. The domestic terror attack: Minutes 5:15 to 18:45 On Wednesday we learned in the morning that Raphael Warnock won his senate race in Georgia and later in the day we heard Jon Ossoff had won, giving the Democrats control of the Senate. When the takeover of the Capitol Building happened that afternoon it wasn’t surprising that they tried. The seeming ease of the takeover and the lack of arrests was in stark contrast to the treatment of peaceful Black Lives Matter protestors over the summer. There is growing evidence that the Capitol Police were told to stand down. The lack of security and police force was complicated because Trump refused to authorize the National Guard and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser didn’t have jurisdiction over the Capitol Police. Pence eventually was contacted by the joint chiefs of staff and he authorized the National Guard. The congress people were terrorized and scared for their lives. Chandra says the Capitol Police might have chosen to stand down to diffuse the situation. We wonder how the mob even got on the steps of the building. We don’t know whether the 25th Amendment will be invoked by Pence and/or if Trump will be impeached. I play a segment from Zoom where Alnaaze, Ameerah, Karen and Zakia wonder if Biden will go after Trump. Chandra thinks Biden is playing it smart and waiting to let the authorities prosecute Trump. What we’re watching: Minutes 18:45 to 28 We both watched a lot of shows over the break. Our absolute favorite was Ted Lasso on Apple+. The writing and characters were amazing and we both loved Jason Sudeikis in the lead. It was heartfelt and sweet without being sugary. We both watched Bridgerton and liked it but didn’t love it. I play a segment from Zoom where Zakia, Alnaaze, Karen and Ameerah talk about the terrible bangs on Bridgerton. We wonder why there were so many bad bangs on that show when it wasn’t typical of the era. Chandra mentions that Daphne and Eloise both had different kinds of bangs trauma. I didn’t think the actress who played Daphne could act. Chandra and I wonder whether she was supposed to be more charismatic. Chandra couldn’t get into Derry Girls. I watched the first season but couldn’t get into the second. The main characters were too mean and destructive for Chandra. We both watched Imposters but I stopped after the first season and Chandra watched both. Hilaria Baldwin: Minutes 28 to 32:30 The best story at the end of the year was that Hilaria Baldwin, Alec Balwin’s wife, got exposed as faking her entire Spanish background and accent. It started before Christmas and picked up steam at the end of the year as people discovered her old interviews and videos. Hilaria denied it by talking around it without directly addressing it. The NY Times interview with her was so shady. She said she could defend herself except for “boundaries.” Here’s a link to the photo I mentioned of Hilaria Baldwin laying on the stove with her head in a frying pan. It turns out that her parents retired and moved to Spain when she was 28, and that she grew up privileged in Massachusetts, both her parents are American and even her grandparents were born in the US. Royals: Minutes 32:30 to 38:30 I loved the Archewell Podcast and was inspired to use more music in ours. The Sussexes are covering People Magazine one year after Sussexit. Harry and Meghan are happy and have no regrets, which is really pissing off The Windsors. The Mirror had a salty story about how The Queen had plans for the one year review but that Harry hadn’t even called to make an appointment. Rebecca English wrote a huge “takedown” story in the Daily Mail claiming that the Queen personally refused Harry’s wreath-laying request on Remembrance Day. The original story was that the courtiers refused the request without contacting her. She also claimed that William’s marriage is better now that the Sussexes are gone, which is just a bizarre story to push. Comments of the Week: Minutes 38:30 to 44 My comment of the week is from Oh_Hey on the post about Calliou being canceled. Chandra’s comment of the week is from Angel on the post that Kim Kardashian and Kanye’s divorce is imminent.
