Play Episode Listen Later Sep 4, 2024 9:27

Introduction: Minutes 0 to 4:45 We will be off next week due to Memorial Day. I finished watching From on MGM+ and also watched Blown Away on Netflix. Chandra remembers the show Flea Market Flip with Ali Wentworth on HGTV. The documentary she remembers is called Craft in America and was on PBS. Royals: Minutes 4:45 to 25:30 Last week, as we were recording, the news had just come out that the Sussexes were going to be in Nigeria the next day. There were so many stories, pictures and videos of their visit, but it was mostly limited to Getty and social media. Their visit was announced late, and we think that was to keep British journalists from traveling to Nigeria to cover their tour. It was hard to source stories and photos, but we loved that they weren't being held up by protocol. They gave a lot of personal time to the causes and people they visited. Meghan was declared a princess of Nigeria by four kings. That was such a moving gesture and you could tell Meghan was touched. Nigeria pulled out all the stops for the Sussexes. People love the Sussexes because they are so genuine. During their tour they were getting invitations from other countries to visit. I play a segment of Meghan's speech at the Women in Leadership panel in Nigeria.  There was a lot of racism and toxicity in the British press around that visit. Nigerian Twitter united to call it out. It seemed like Buckingham Palace gave the press the go ahead to attack the Sussexes. We've also heard that Charles is trying to block Harry and Meghan from visiting more commonwealth countries, similar to how Charles tried to block the Bidens from being hospitable toward them. We mentioned in our last episode that Charles had scheduled a handover event to give William the title of colonel in chief of the Army Air Corps, which was Prince Harry's regiment when he served two tours in Afghanistan. That little event happened, William cosplayed as Harry, dressed like him and took a ride in an Apache helicopter. The optics were terrible, because William wants to be Harry and falls short in every way. The Sussexes are covering this week's People and it's such a contrast to last week's weird cover story that centered how William was coping with his wife's illness. There are direct quotes from Harry and Meghan saying how well they're doing and that they're going to plan more visits. I play a clip from Zoom with Karen, Zakia and Ameerah, where we talked about the Nigerian tour. Like Karen mentioned on Zoom, the Sussexes got a lot of gifts. Of course there are calls for them to give them back. The British press is trying to make it sound like they got extravagant gifts. Chandra remembers when Camilla was gifted diamonds by the Saudis. Archewell was briefly “delinquent” with their registration in the state of California, but that was a simple mixup by the Attorney General's office which lost a check. The check was sent by certified mail and was delivered. Governor Newsom spoke out on their behalf. This week we also saw more of William's alleged one time mistress, Rose Hanbury. She was at the Badminton Horse Trials where she was photographed with Camilla. Rose and her husband, David Rocksavage, were also at an OBE service where their son was the page for Charles and Camilla.  Comments of the Week: Minutes 25:30 to end Chandra's comment of the week is from Sunday on the post about Rose Hanbury's reemergence. My comments of the week are from Harla A Brazen Hussy and StellainNH on the post about King Charles' new portrait by Jonathan Yeo. Thanks for listening bitches!

Introduction: Minutes 0 to 6:00 I've been watching Encounters on Netflix! Chandra is watching a friend's cat and it's being naughty. Royals: Minutes (6:00) to 19:45 The British press is making excuses for why Kate can't go to Singapore for the Earthshot Awards. They're saying that she's a reluctant traveler, that she is focused on her kids and has to stay back because that's the week George has some kind of qualifying test for school. Kate made sure to mention this at an event. We think this is just an excuse. Robert Jobson reported in the Daily Express that Kate will increasingly “step out solo” and that William is “spreading his wings.” The press still writes about them like they've just graduated college. Will and Kate did a couple of events together recently. They met with Apple CEO Tim Cook at Kensington Palace where they likely got free iPhones. They also went to Cardiff to do multiple events for Black History Month where they looked especially awkward. We got stories afterward about how hunky William is. Kate visited a community center without bringing anything. I play a segment from Zoom where we talk about Kate's style. Zakia mentions that Kate may have lost some sensation in her face due to injections and be exaggerating her expressions for that reason. This makes sense because celebrity women have said that they weren't able to smile after bad Botox. Ashley says how disrespectful it is that Kate repeated an outfit within a couple of days for an event with Black people. Sophie Turner and Taylor Swift Minutes (19:45) to 28:30 Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas are divorcing. We talked about that in episode 157. Joe tried to push the narrative that Sophie is partying, which was a crap PR move but more than that he didn't need that because the children have US residency. A lot of people don't understand international child custody rules, which is that the children stay where they are "habitual residents." The latest news is that they're going to mediation to determine custody. I play a segment from Zoom where we talk about that. We think Sophie is getting bad advice after some of her recent public moves. Taylor Swift is dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. She's been attending to his football games and Swifties and the NFL are going crazy. She went to a game with his mom in Kansas City on September 24 and on Sunday October 1 she went to a game in New Jersey with Sophie, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Lisa Maffia came to prominence in the early 2000s as the only woman in So Solid Crew, the platinum selling UK Garage act from South London that took over the UK mainstream. Lisa joins Zakia in the NTS studio in London to reflect on Lisa's younger years and the early days of So Solid Crew, through to Lisa's solo career. Lisa and Zakia discuss the highs and lows of So Solid's journey, which took them from DIY pirate radio to the Brit Awards and countless other accolades. Along the way they drew criticism from the British press, and they fell victim to the Metropolitan Police's punitive 696 form, which all but shut down their scene. Lloyd ‘Bullwackie' Barnes and his legendary Wackie's institution has been at the heart of the dub and reggae scene since the 1970s. Starting out as a tailor to reggae's brightest stars, Bullwackie quickly started working as an engineer at Treasure Isle and Studio One studios in Kingston, Jamaica. On moving to New York with his family he became immersed in the burgeoning reggae and dub scene briefly running his own soundsystem. Bullwackie opened up the first reggae studio in New York, Wackie's House of Music. Since Wackie's was founded in 1976, Bullwackie has produced and released records with the likes of Sugar Minnott, Lee Scratch Perry, The Love Joys, Horace Andy, Max Romeo, Dennis Brown, and - as Zakia discovers - even impromptu sessions with the likes of Mohammed Ali. After enjoying a resurgence of interest in more recent times, following a reissue series via Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald's Basic Channel dub techno label, Wackie's today enjoys multi-generational cult status. In this podcast Zakia and Bullwackie reflect on his life and career, and the exciting discovery of his stolen archive of unreleased Wackie's recordings that Lloyd has recently recovered, and is now in the process of mastering, in some cases nearly 50 years after they were first recorded. Check out the NTS Guide To Wackie'sPresenter - Zakia Sewell, Producer - Lizzy King, Sound Recording - Josh Farmer & Zara Wladawsky, Editing - Femi Oriogun-Williams, Mastering - Felix Stock, Composer - Jennifer Walton, Talent & Outreach - Samuel Strang. This is an NTS Podcast, discover more at www.nts.live. Abdul Ghani and his extended family fled to the roof of a nearby girls' school in August when the floodwaters came to his town in southern Pakistan's Sindh province. His family was still there two weeks later, without tents or any other shelter, when waves whipped up in the floodwaters destroyed their house.“Our hearts sank,” Ghani said from the sun-scorched school roof, where the one remaining room of his home is still visible and surrounded by water. “The house that was our shelter, our children's home, was destroyed.”Ghani, a mason, built the nine-room home in a small farming town in the Dadu district himself. He lived there with his wife and three kids, along with his seven brothers and their families. Heer Mallah with her children Zulgar Non, 5, Zakia, 3, and Aurong Zeb, 1. Credit: Carolyn Beeler/The World Unprecedented rains in Pakistan that began in mid-June led to flooding that impacted 33 million people and killed more than 1,700 others, causing an estimated $30 million in damages and economic losses. Some two months after the rains stopped, 7,000 square miles of land in Sindh are still submerged under water.Five million of the 8 million people displaced by the floods are still unable to return home.Paying for damagesThe question of who should pay for damages like these wrought by climate-fueled disasters has been one of the most contentious issues at the UN climate summit this month in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, with Pakistan's floods a focal point of discussions.“We are paying the price for other people's carbon usage,” said Sherry Rehman, Pakistan's climate minister, who is at the summit. In recent months, she's often cited the statistic that Pakistan has contributed far less than 1% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, even though it's among those bearing the brunt of the consequences.Pakistan is leading a negotiating bloc of 134 developing countries in calling for a dedicated pot of money to be established for “loss and damage” funding.“Countries on the frontline of the climate crisis are facing accelerated catastrophes, and are not getting the relief and rehabilitation funding they need,” Rehman said. For decades, developed countries have resisted calls for direct climate aid, partially out of fear of exposing themselves to claims of financial or legal liability, not to mention the complexities of defining which damages should be included. In the floods in Pakistan, for example, it's difficult to tease out how much climate change contributed to the estimated $30 million in damages and economic losses. What used to be a road in Pakistan's Sindh province before it was inundated by floodwaters. Credit: Carolyn Beeler/The World Warming contributed to the torrential rains that triggered these floods. An attribution study published by an international group of scientists in September found that rainfall in Sindh and neighboring Balochistan is 50% more intense now than it would have been without climate change. But the researchers say that other factors also drove the damages, including development on flood plains, inadequate infrastructure, an outdated river management system, high poverty rates and a lack of adequate early warning systems.Early momentum at COP27For the first time, this year, countries have started to volunteer funds specifically for losses and damages. Several European countries, along with New Zealand, announced tens of millions of dollars in aid in the first week of the summit. Also for the first time, negotiators at the climate summit have a mandate to discuss an official mechanism for loss and damage funding through the UN, “with a view to adopting a conclusive decision no later than 2024.It's not yet clear what shape any funding will take.Developed countries want to discuss options for funding at COP27 and decide on a solution by 2024. Developing countries want to agree to a loss and damage fund this year, and hammer out the operational details until 2024, when it would then go into effect.US climate envoy John Kerry said “not a lot of people want to sign off on something that is not yet fully defined.”“The well-known fact is that the United States and many other countries will not establish some sort of legal structure that is tied to compensation or liability,” Kerry added. The European Union's head of delegation, Jake Werksman, said last week that the negotiations aim to start a broad conversation, not focus on a single solution like a fund for losses and damages. The US and EU also favor funding to flow through existing programs and institutions, such as the International Monetary Fund or the Green Climate Fund.Insurance and disaster protectionThe G-7, meanwhile, spearheaded by Germany with a $173 million commitment, launched a “Global Shield” program on Monday, based on insurance and disaster protection for vulnerable countries. But developing countries insist that a loss and damage fund — not just insurance or loans, which would trap them in further debt — is essential, and must be agreed to this year.Proponents of such a fund argue that post-disaster aid, which currently seeks to address events like Pakistan's floods, comes at the whim of donors. So far, a UN appeal for Pakistan has brought in only a third of its goal, and that itself is only a fraction of the $16 billion the government estimates it will take to rebuild.“International aid is given for charity. Rich people feel bad that this event is happening in poor countries, and they give money,” said Saleemul Huq, a Bangladeshi scientist who's attended every UN climate summit and is a longtime adviser to the Least Developed Countries coalition.“Loss and damage is not that,” Huq added. “It is polluters taking responsibility for having caused the problem, recognizing that there are victims of the problem who they have the responsibility to help.”Meanwhile, aid that does follow disasters can be slow to arrive, exacerbating health and economic problems.Water-born illnesses spiked in Pakistan with the floods. Officials fear widespread increases of malnutrition — which impacted nearly 1 in 2 Pakistani children even before the floods — and upticks in child marriage rates.Back at the girls' school where Abdul Ghani now lives with five of his brothers and their families, it's hard to keep the kids out of the floodwaters.“We try to stop them, but they won't listen,” Heer Mallah, Ghani's wife, said while cooking stewed spinach and potatoes in the hallway of the school. Children from Abdul Ghani's own family and extended family play together in a courtyard in Pakistan. Credit: Carolyn Beeler/The World “The children are not healthy here,” she said. “But what can we do? We're helpless until we return home.”Her 5-year-old son has a persistent cough. He and his 3-year-old sister have malaria, with fevers that broke after more than a week.“We dream that our kids will get educated and become doctors. But how are they going to do that if they can't go to school?”Heer Mallah, Pakistani mother“We dream that our kids will get educated and become doctors,” Mallah said with a smile. “But how are they going to do that if they can't go to school?” Fatima Mullah, 12, shelters with her family in a classroom just a few doors down from where she used to study as a student. Credit: Carolyn Beeler/The World  Ghani's niece, 12-year-old Fatima Mallah, now sleeps in a classroom a few doors down from where she used to be in second grade. She likes playing with her cousins there, including gleeful games of tag in the school's courtyard, but she misses school.   “She cries and says, 'bring back my books,' but we can't, because we don't have money,” said her mother, Shaahzadi Mallah, sitting on a traditional wood and woven rope bed in the courtyard. “We can't even eat three meals, how can we buy books?”The family is down to two meals a day. The cow whose milk they used to sell is tied up in the school's courtyard, under a line of drying laundry. The cow's grazing land is flooded, so she's not producing enough milk for the family to sell. Most of the places where Abdul Ghani used to work as a mason are flooded, too. He recently bought nets to start fishing the floodwaters.Farmers are perhaps even worse off, as flooding ruined their rice crop for the year and, in many places, will prevent them from sowing wheat this month. In affected areas, pumps powered by tractor engines are working to “de-water” towns, which often means moving water to agriculture fields or other less populated areas. Pumps powered by tractor engines work to “de-water” flooded towns in Pakistan. Credit: Carolyn Beeler/The World Government and military officials are going door-to-door conducting damage assessments. Sindh's information minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said only when that's complete will money be distributed to help people rebuild.“Once the assessment figures come, then the rehabilitation work will start,” Memon said.Related: Loss and damage: Who is responsible when climate change harms the world's poorest countries?

123: Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry smeared in Tina Brown's book, The Wessexes' Caribbean tour

Introduction: Minutes 0 to 7:00 We will have an episode out next week and are off May 14th. I finished the first season of Yellowstone and really liked it. Chandra is watching Gaslit and loves Betty Gilpin and Dan Stevens's performances. Chandra really liked The Batman and thinks Robert Pattinson was excellent. Royals: Minutes 7:00 to 32:00 There are two new royal books for which we are getting advanced details and interviews with the authors. The main one is Tina Brown's The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor–the Truth and the Turmoil, which came out this week on April 26th. Brown has sources in the palace as well as in the Middleton camp. Brown's book takes Harry and Meghan's strengths, like their shared vision of helping people and Meghan's skill at public speaking, and makes them sound like they're bad and a nefarious plot. Meghan is called “actressy” and characterized as swag-hungry. Chandra has been reading and reporting on the book. In the book, Brown is bitchy to everyone but in interviews she's very complimentary to Kate. Her talking points are much different than what she's been writing. In an interview Brown called Harry “unbelievably arrogant” for saying he was concerned about his grandmother. She is racist against Meghan and is downplaying the very real racism Meghan has faced, comparing it to the classism against Kate. In an interview with Marie Claire Brown trashed Meghan. She said that “Meghan got angry so fast, and that's what's rocked the family.” This is the angry Black woman stereotype. Brown has not acknowledged the fact that Meghan said in the Oprah interview that she was suicidal while she was pregnant and being smeared by the press. She does not take Harry and Meghan at their word. In the book Brown said Harry liked Meghan because she didn't come from his “narrow circle” and she “was of a breed he had not encountered.” That's so racist. Chandra mentions that Brown uses the word “ghetto” in the book when describing Meghan's career on TV cable. Brown also wrote that Kate was jealous of Meghan's style and that she was jealous of her sister, Pippa. In another part of the book, Brown wrote about how Carole coached Kate to land and keep William. Carole strategized with Kate about how to handle William when he was cheating on her. Another royal book is coming out on June 21, William at 40: The Making of a Modern Monarch, by Robert Jobson. The advance story we heard from that is about what a rage monster William is, which we already know. Harry's strength in being a calm, even-tempered person who has been to therapy is painted as a weakness by the press when William is the one flying off the handle. Chandra credits Robert Lacey's book Battle of Brothers for setting the narratives that these other royal biographies are following. I play a segment from Zoom where Karen and Zakia wonder about the press messaging. Chandra says that the Invictus Games was a turning point that showed how petty and negative the British press is. The Wessexes did their Caribbean tour, where they're getting much the same reception as the Cambridges did on their struggle tour just with less publicity. Sophie and Edward tried to do it low key, but they still got told that several Caribbean countries want reparations and intend to become republics. When the Queen passes, the commonwealth will be all but over. Prince Charles and Camilla are doing a three day tour of Canada from May 17th to May 19th. Chandra wonders why he's going for such a short time and thinks it's because he doesn't trust his relatives around the Queen. I play a segment from Zoom where we talked about the royal tour and the commonwealth countries. Kate did an outing in London with Princess Anne on Thursday where they visited their maternal health patronages. There are about three photos where Anne and other people are side-eyeing Kate. I asked Chandra if she had larger versions of those photos from our agency and curiously those unflattering photos were the only ones out of the set which were lower resolution. Comments of the Week: Minutes 32:00 to end My comment of the week is from notasugarhere on the post about Donald Trump telling Piers Morgan that Prince Harry is whipped. Chandra's comment of the week is from ThatsNotOkay on the post about Olivia Wilde getting served with custody papers at CinemaCon. Thanks for listening bitches!

Chandra was sick last week with a GI illness that's been making the rounds. Royals: Minutes 6:30 to 18:00 Introduction: Minutes 0 to 6:30 We will have episodes out for the next two weeks and will be off on April 23rd. I'm surprised to hear that the Grammys are Sunday. Chandra was sick last week with a GI illness that's been making the rounds. Royals: Minutes 6:30 to 18:00 Last week when we were off the Cambridges had their royal tour of the Caribbean. We thought it would go poorly but it went so much worse than we expected. They had multiple photo ops where they reminded people that they're out of touch colonialists. They got dumped live on camera by the Jamaican Prime Minister and they did the standing up riding in the Jeep photo op after that. It was so bad that mainstream international media was picking up the story. We will see less royal tours after this and there are rumors of an inquest as well. William's final statement about the tour sounded angry that it didn't go as he expected. Kate's fashion and appearances were an embarrassment. Her fashion is sending a message that she wants to return to a bygone era. I play a segment from Zoom where we talked about this. We wonder if the Jamaican prime minister's hand was forced by how badly William and Kate were doing on the tour. Charles set them up all along, like Chandra has been saying. Prince Charles and Camilla did a little two day victory lap tour of Ireland toward the end of the Cambridges' Caribbean tour. We also had the memorial for Prince Philip this week. That was similarly a disaster because The Queen was accompanied by Prince Andrew. This was her idea and she insisted on it according to the press. Other sources said that it was Andrew's idea and he pushed it on the Queen. A lot of the royal family and many European monarchs came to the memorial, but of course Prince Harry wasn't there. Rose Hanbury was there though. Harry was criticized for choosing to stay home despite the security situation. We're looking forward to the Invictus Games, which start on April 16th. Oscars and Will Smith: Minutes 18 to 36:30 We had the Oscars over the weekend and there were no upsets in the major categories. We're so happy that CODA won Best Picture. The ceremony was bloated with nonsensical clip montages and tributes to various movies. Chris Rock presented Best Documentary, which went to Questlove for Summer of Soul. We loved that movie! Watch it on Hulu if you haven't seen it yet. Chris made an awful joke about Jada Pinkett Smith in his stupid opener. The Academy can't get their story straight about whether they knew about the joke or whether Chris adlibbed it. After that Will walked up to Chris, smacked him with an open hand, returned to his seat and said “keep my wife's name out of your f'ing mouth.” I thought it was a bit at first but soon learned it really happened. Chandra remembered that Chris has been targeting Jada for years. Jada has alopecia and has been open about the fact that she's sensitive about her hair loss. Tanisha, who used to write with us as Oya, has alopecia and covered some of the stories about Jada's hair loss. I play a segment from Zoom where Tanisha, Zakia, Jasmine, April and Ameerah talk about this. Chandra points out that the Academy handled this incident poorly and should have done something to diffuse the situation. Denzel Washington, Tyler Perry, Bradley Cooper and Nicole Kidman were comforting Will and Jada. Will's publicist talked to him in the audience. There are competing reports as to whether the Academy asked Will to leave. Will's Oscar speech afterwards was raw and emotional. In the story about Jim Carrey condemning Will Smith, Chandra asked white people to leave space for people of color. We got hate mail and hate comments for that. Chandra appreciated how people were deferential to Denzel in the aftermath of the incident. Comments of the Week: Minutes 36:30 to end My comment of the week is from Mika on the post about Prince Andrew thinking he's young and should get another chance with the public. Chandra's comment of the week is from Byzant on the post about Kate preening at the memorial. Thanks for listening bitches!

Introduction: Minutes 0 to 8:45 Chandra loved CODA, but wishes that The French Dispatch and Cruella got more attention this year. We both saw Summer of Soul and want it to win Best Documentary. Chandra is watching The Golden Age and loves it. I play a segment from Zoom where we talk about The Golden Age. Jane Campion: Minutes 8:45 to 17:30 Power of The Dog won Best Picture and Best Director at the BAFTAs, Critics Choice and at the Directors Guild Awards. Oscar voting runs from March 17th until the 22nd. Although Power of The Dog might have been considered the frontrunner for Best Picture and Director after it won so much, that has hopefully changed after director Jane Campion put down Venus and Serena Williams in her speech at the Critics Choice Awards. On Monday Campion issued an apology. I play a segment from Zoom where we talked about this. Zakia pointed out that Venus and Serena got a standing ovation when they presented King Richard and that's why Jane Campion tried to take them down. We hope that Power of The Dog doesn't win at The Oscars. Royals: Minutes 17:30 to 31:00 Last week we talked about Prince Williams' racist gaffe during a visit to the Ukrainian Cultural Centre with Kate in which he said “it's very alien to see this in Europe.” The palace refused to issue a follow up statement or clarification. William didn't go to the BAFTAs last Sunday even though he's the honorary president. The Cambridges are still planning that Caribbean tour which is scheduled for March 19th to the 26th. Chandra wonders if The Cambridges are being set up to fail because Jamaica wants to leave the commonwealth. Prince Harry is promoting the Invictus Games, which will take place at The Hague from April 16th to The 22nd. We got a cute video of him trying to speak Dutch to organizers over Zoom. Harry is not planning to visit the Queen when he is in Europe and is not planning on attending the memorial for Prince Phillip on March 29th. Chandra thinks Harry will try to see the Queen around his trip. Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, was in New York for four days but got hardly any attention because no one is interested in her. She brought her own photographer which is good since none of the photo agencies bothered to cover her appearances. On Tuesday she delivered a keynote speech at the UN at the Upholding Women's Rights in Afghanistan event. The big event this week was the Commonwealth Service, which was on Tuesday at Westminster Abbey. The Queen was not there. The only royals who attended were Kate, William, Camilla and Charles. The 2020 Commonwealth Service was legendary. Kate and William went to the annual St. Patrick's Day parade for the 1st Battalion Irish Guards. We talk about dog breeds. I want a dog that doesn't shed and isn't so big it has a lot of poo to pick up, but can hike with me. (We didn't talk about this but my mom is telling me to get a Havanese. She also likes Greyhounds and she has a Miniature Schnauzer.) Comments of the Week: Minutes 31:00 to end My comment of the week is from Megan on the post where Kanye worried that Pete is going to get Kim hooked on drugs. Chandra's comments of the week are from Feeshalori, equality and Sue E Generis on the post about the Cambridges' Caribbean tour. Thanks for listening bitches!
