This is a handy market for me to visit for street food, snacks, lunch, and fruit and a great market for anyone visiting that's staying in District 1. An alternative to Ba Chieu Market if you found that one too overwhelming, (featured in the last episode), with less motorbike traffic. The walk along the canal is always nice in the mornings or evenings. This market has all of the items you'd find in most markets that are larger and there are some great little places in the neighborhood that serve classic noodle dishes, banh mi, and com chay, veg. rice. As a child, Sandra was always curious to know more about her family. She would contact her aunt from to time and take notes. Fast forward to adulthood Sandra married, had three children, and her desire to know more about her family grew stronger. She wanted to share her lineage with her sons so that they would pass it down to their children and children's children. Sandra's family research eventually helped restore families who had been distant for years. She knew then that family research was her niche in helping others with their family research. Her biggest research project was from a man who was born in Saigon Vietnam looking for his biological father who was African American. With all of the tools and resources like genetic DNA testing, she was able to find his father. After that discovery, the flood gates of "help me please" started pouring in. Sandra has helped many people discover their biological families and the request are still pouring in. Sandra's contact info: Sandrascott816@yahoo.com

Thi Nghe Market located in Binh Thanh District, a short ride from District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City is a bustling non-tourist market. This market has been in this location for over 200 years and today is still a popular spot for locals to shop. I'm here to share the sights and sounds, they are overwhelming at times, but will definitely give you a sense of what it's like to visit one of these markets. Typically around the perimeter of a traditional covered market is where alot of the action takes place but if you're new to visiting these markets you must be very aware of your surroundings as most people shop while riding on their motorbike. The interesting thing for foreigners visiting one of these markets will notice almost immediately is they'll will have little attention given to them compared with a tourist type market. Not a good place to search for typical souvenirs but a wonderful way to experience local culture and generally warm hospitality from locals, many love engaging with tourists or foreigners. Further, he gives me insight into the accommodation perks he's received while touring in different places!   He describes how he originally planned to write his next book in the city, and was drawn to it by an old friend. We talk with considerable detail about business vs. tourist visas, and the value of enlisting an affordable lawyer/consultant for the application process.   What's especially fascinating is how Dave has used "laughing on purpose" to survive and even embrace the hectic and sometimes tense nature of the city, particularly the heavy congestion of traffic. Moreover, he shares how much he treasures the spontaneous and adventurous interactions he's had with the locals!   You can find Dave on his website davebermancoaching.com, and even join his Facebook group titled 'Daily Laughers'.   | Website: https://www.theexpatexperience.org/ | Facebook: The Expat Experience |

When I first started visiting HCMC I often visited the market in the mornings but lately I've been making my way out to D6 in the afternoons when the light is just right and the atmosphere is still frenzied. It's also a fun place to visit to see what seasonal items are for sale. During Halloween it was interesting masks, plastic internal organs, and other decorations. In this episode I'm checking out the various Christmas decorations and items for sale. This is also one of the best places to come for food in the greater Saigon area. Christmas in Saigon, Vietnam

Far East Travels Podcast

How do people celebrate Christmas in Saigon, Vietnam? In this episode I chat about how people celebrate this holiday and what to expect if you visit at this time of year. Being a primarily Buddhist country, Christmas is not as an important celebration as the Lunar New Year or Tet. In fact, technically Christmas isn't a holiday at all, so if it falls during the work week, everyone goes about their regular business. Most people that live in the greater Ho Chi Minh City area do like to go out and view all of the lights and decorations at shopping malls, walking streets, and view nativity scenes in front of churches. Officially 8% of the population is Christian but it could be slightly higher with 7% being Roman Catholica and 1% Protestant. Christmas Eve is traditionally the time when locals celebrate Christmas. Visiting the Notre Dam Cathedral, Nguyen Hue and Bui Vien Walking Streets are some of the favorite places to hang out. As I mentioned in this episode, although you'll see people out and about taking pictures around Christmas trees, the true spirit or energy that you would be accustomed to at home will be lacking. But, so will the shopping frenzy, the disgruntled customers in long line-ups and so on. There are definitely much more than just 6 sites or places to see in Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City but if I had to narrow it down to a few select these are the places I recommend you should see-especially on your first visit. Ho Chi Minh City has an estimated population of around 13 million. It is a megalopolis and rapidly changing. I've left off more tradtional markets and districts or spots that are more frequented by locals. These are familiar sites your friends will recognize when you share your photos and they are all well worth visiting. Oddly one place I haven't been to yet that's on the list is the new "Skyview" of Landmark 81, the tallest building in Southeast Asia, about a 10-15 taxi ride from the city center of District 1. At $35USD this I believe is the most expensive tourist attraction in Saigon. Most of the museums are less that $3 and some of the sites listed here are free to see or visit like the post office and of course the hotels. I did forget to mention the iconic Saigon Opera House as a place to see when you're walking along Dong Khoi Street, it's right in between the Hotel Continental Saigon and the Caravelle Hotel. The traditional markets actually whether they're frequented by tourists or not are a great way to understand how locals eat. The non-tourist markets are going to feature mostly local and everyday products so you obviously won't be seeing t-shirts or souvenirs. You probably will see live and fresh animals as well as the cleaning of fresh killed creatures like frogs and chickens so it's not for the squeamish either. Ghost Festival Day-Praying For The Hungry Ghosts-Saigon Vietnam Throughout East Asia and Southeast Asia during the 7th month of the Lunar Calendar it's believed that the gates of hell are opened so as to allow ghosts to wander the earth for the month. These ghosts are said to have experienced a particularly bad death, or do not have anyone praying for them in the after life. Followers of Buddhism and Taoism as well as others who believe in the presence of these ghosts will put out offerings of food and drink, as well as money. Prayers are also offered so the ghosts will not create mischief or havoc during the month. There are many superstitions that surround the ghost month including not getting married, starting a business or going on vacation. The most important day is the full moon day which is considered Ghost Festival Day falling on the 15 day of the 7th month of the Lunar Calendar. In Vietnam this also coincides with Vu Lan which is like a Mother's Day. People also go to the temple to prayer for the mothers but usually prayer for fathers as well as the rest of the family. If you spot someone wearing a red rose it means their mother or parents are still alive. If you see them wearing a white rose it means the mother or father is deceased. If you want to see any of these rituals when visiting Saigon the Ba Thien Hau Pagoda in District 5 is a good place to visit as well as other temples in this district. Hoi An, Hue, and Hanoi would also be great places to see the rituals surrounding this month or day when visiting Vietnam.

Vinachuoi.com has a stand in District 1 near the Nguyen Hue Walking Street.https://goo.gl/maps/4xmDVvkn1d819NyA9and another one here:https://goo.gl/maps/CbuNwJuLCNGNTWLY9The wonderful place that churns out grilled bananas with coconut pudding is located here:https://goo.gl/maps/8EUe6vBQq7CMgfQW9 Just remember they close at 7pm.You can also find places around the Ben Thanh Market that sell these treats but they're usually more expensive. You can find carts and stands scattered around Districts 3, 5 and 10. These locations listed are some of my favorite places for fried and grilled bananas. I always welcome your questions or comments on the podcast. Lately I've been getting messages either on Instagram or Facebook from people planning on visiting Vietnam in the coming weeks/months. There were over 2.5 million visitors to Ho Chi Minh City in the first quarter of the year up 10% over last year. HCMC accounts for half of all the visits to Vietnam. With all the modern amenities and shopping malls the city has still retained much of it's traditional feeling neighborhoods and markets so you still have the opportunity, as long as you venture out of District 1, to see some real local culture. Interested in cheap brand name running shoes, knock off goods and souvenirs when in Saigon? Then head for the Ben Thanh Market as many visitors do! In this episode I get back to doing walkabout podcasts, usually with commentary and questions from live-streaming followers. Ben Thanh Market is probably the most visited tourist site in all of Ho Chi Minh City. Even if you don't like these places I think it's still worth a look if it's your first time. To get a much more authentic local experience head to some of the markets outside of District 1 where less tourists go and locals are more likely to strike up a friendly conversation with nothing more in mind then a little engagement with a foreigner. I also answer some general travel and Vietnam questions as well as other related topics. Thanks so much for listening. You can support this podcast by becoming a patron! Saigon, Vietnam-6 Favorite Veg/Vegan Banh Mi Shops I know how frustrating it can be to find vegetarian and vegan options, especially when it comes to tasting local dishes! The banh mi is a classic street food snack or meal in Vietnam. The wonderful baguette from the French colonial period, fresh herbs, veggies and pickles, but unfortunately for vegetarians and vegans the classic version includes mostly pork, pate, sometimes chicken, and occasionally fish. I'm not either a strict vegetarian or vegan, I still indulge in fish and seafood on occasion, but I mostly stick to a plant-based diet so I know the challenges sometimes trying to find things to fit into the diet. Luckily with a Buddhist based culture in Vietnam, vegetarianism/veganism, is a more widely accepted diet or way of life compared with many other countries. I've been eating my way through the many plant-based options in Ho Chi Minh City for the last few weeks and narrowed down 6 of my favorite banh mi that are either vegetarian or vegan. As I mentioned in the video I believe some of the vegetarian options could be vegan if you asked to leave mayo off the bread. The least expensive banh mi was found at Veggie Saigon for d15,000, (takeaway), the most expensive from The Vegan Garden d35,000. We are talking a price range from $0.65-$1.51USD, amazing value! Delivery from District 7 to District 1 for the banh mi from The Vegan Garden was $1.00USD.Please let me know in the comments if you enjoy and appreciate these videos on finding good food, particularly vegetarian and plant-based food, and I'll do more. Ho Chi Minh City was recently named one of the top 15 cities in the world for vegans. I'm not the least bit surprised. I'm finding the options, value, and quality of vegan food in HCMC first rate! Thanks again for watching the video! After spending a week in the rapidly growing Ho Chi Minh City more thoughts on the future of this megalopolis of Southern Vietnam. District 7 and 2 are expat enclaves with modern shopping facilities along with Western style restaurants and shopping. I think there are even more Western tourists along with visitors from across East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. It has been just as interesting to watch the rapid growth of Saigon as it has to study the historical sites as well as getting to know the traditional markets and local food/restaurants. I'm hopeful the new MRT/train system will improve the traffic congestion and air quality in the area bringing a better quality of commute and lifestyle to locals. Thanks so much for listening! Actually most of Ho Chi Minh City is lively, in fact pretty much all of it is. The constant buzz from the hundreds of thousands of motorbikes that race the streets fuels what looks like to the uninitiated, pure chaos. But for the most part, it seems to work. There’s lots of ways of getting around Ho Chi Minh City, or as many of the locals still call it, Saigon. It’s not for everyone, but when it wasn’t raining I found myself hopping on the back of a motorbike taxi ordered using an app. Safe, convenient,  and courteous drivers  only interested in getting you safely to your destination with fair pricing. The original Ben Thanh market area was established in the 16th century by local street vendors and eventually was organized by the French into a more formal setting in the mid 1800’s. The current location was established in 1912 with a renovation completed in 1985.Even though the market closes at 6pm every night it’s still a great gathering spot with lots of people hanging out,  eating and socializing. A night market opens up just outside Ben Thanh right after the indoor market closes. Ben Thanh Market is a great place to see what people eat, and shop for in Saigon, but be aware these prices are set high for naive tourists and hard bargaining. The current location was established in 1912 with a renovation completed in 1985. Even though the market closes at 6pm every night it’s still a great gathering spot with lots of people hanging out, eating and socializing. A night market opens up just outside Ben Thanh right after the indoor market closes. Ben Thanh Market is a great place to see what people eat, and shop for in Saigon, but be aware these prices are set high for naive tourists and hard bargaining. Personally I love looking at stuff here, the giant stacks of clothes, souvenirs and massive containers heaped with dried fruit and nuts, candies, and coffee and tea sellers around everycorner. The displays are amazing and enticing, but I tend to shop in non-touristy neighborhoods where they’re not accustomed to foreigners and it’s easier to bargain. Because most people that work here speak pretty good English communication is easier. If you’re pressed for time and want to shop at Ben Thanh Market, look at everything with disinterest, and bargain hard. The food and drinks at the stalls are tasty and the prices are pretty fair for a high traffic area. Ho Chi Minh City is divided into 24 districts, but there’s really only 7 that you are likely to find yourself in. This is District 1-which is Saigon proper. It’s where you’ll find most of the major sites. From Ben Thanh Market there’s lots of places to see within a 15 minute walk, like the Opera House, The Old City Hall, major shopping malls, historic hotels with rooftop bars, and more. It’s also where the War Remnants Museum is located. This is one of the most visited museums in Saigon with an estimated 500,000 guests per year, mostly foreigners. Although some may find this a one-sided exhibit it does show in very real displays the atrocities of war. On the grounds there are various leftover U.S. military aircraft and equipment including tanks, bulldozers, and howitzers. As well as a large format black and white photograph of a mangrove appearing to have been destroyed by the use of chemicals. In another building on the grounds a display includes the infamous “tiger cages” used by the South Vietnamese to contain VC soldiers. Inside, the two floors, formerly the United States Information Agency Building, are various displays of weapons and bombs used during the Vietnam War.. There are also exhibits relating to the first Indochina War with French Colonists. And a poignant display of all of the international press photographers that were killed during the war. Although some will find many of the exhibits biased, the overall tone of this museum has softened over time. Once called the Exhibition House for US and Puppet Crimes, later the name changed to Exhibition House for Crimes of War and Aggression and then once diplomatic relations with the U.S. were reestablished in 1995, the name changed again to The War Remnants Museum. On the other side of town a visit to The Jade Emperor Pagoda is one of the most atmospheric temple experiences in Ho Chi Minh City. It’s considered one of the five most important shrines of the area. Taoism was introduced to Vietnam by the Chinese during their thousand year-old occupation along with Buddhism and Confuciunism. By stats Vietnam is considered one of the least religious countries in the world. However those numbers could be deceiving as many Vietnamese will claim they are non-religious to be a member of the Communist party but in fact do visit temples and worship ancestors. Turtles are a sign of longevity. They are a symbol you will see frequently in temples throughout Vietnam. The Jade Emperor Temple has a pond full of live turtles, some with auspicious sayings painted on their shells. Feeding the turtles is considered part of a merit making visit to the temple. The new Chinese name of the temple translates to Lucky Sea Temple or Tortoise Pagoda. It is clearly a mixed denominational temple of Buddhism and Taoism. U.S. President Barack Obama paid a visit to the temple May 22nd, 2016 during his state visit to Vietnam. As you enter the main sanctuary Buddhist and Taoist deities surround you with two giant generals to the right and left. The combination of incense smoke and laser beams of light entering through the ceiling further enhances the power all of the deities seem to wield, especially the Jade Emperor himself. In another room through a corridor the Chief of Hell awaits you. On the walls there’s wood-carved depictions of the various punishments that evil doers will receive in The Ten Regions of Hell. The City God is also found in this room with many worshippers paying him a visit. His hat reads, “at one glance, money is given”. The final room, some refer to as the “women lounge” is where 12 female figures sit that represent the good and bad of human nature. The bad displayed in this figure drinking alcohol from a jug. The Goddess of fertility Kim Hua, presides overall. Childless couples visit here frequently to pray for offspring. Ho Chi Minh City is a megalopolis of contrasts, new and old, traditional culture and modern shopping, pleasant sites, friendly faces and reminders of the dark days of despair and war. In my opinion it’s one of the most vibrant, exciting, and rapidly changing cities in Asia and I can’t wait to share more.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, or Saigon a name still used by many of it's residents is full of history, culture, amazing nightlife, and a city that's modernizing rapidly. On my most recent visit the skyline was noticeably filled with cranes atop new buildings and an underground subway under construction. With shopping malls everywhere including a brand new "Saigon Center" and a flagship Japanese department store as it's main tenant, you might conclude that the city is losing some of it's historic charm. Not the case at all. There are still plenty of beautiful French colonial buildings, palaces and historic sites to satisfy the fiercest culture vulture. Cholon in District 5, the largest "Chinatown" in the world is full of atmospheric pagodas, outdoor markets and old streets selling traditional Chinese medicine remedies. District 1 is where most of the historic and iconic landmarks and buildings that Ho Chi Minh City is famous for, including the General Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Opera House. In disrict 1 bordering District 3 you'll find one of the city's most treasured temples, The Jade Emperor Pagoda. In Taoism, the Jade Emperor is the God of Gods, the King of Heaven, or Ngoc Hoang. The pagoda is set on some very humble grounds, with a pool filled with carp or koi and a turtle pond. I made a trip to the Jade Emperor Pagoda on my most recent visit to Ho Chi Minh City and was thoroughly taken in by it's wonderful interior with sun rays casting beautiful light onto the many dieties worshipped by followers. Join me for a tour through HCMC's Jade Emperor Pagoda from a previous Far East Adventure Travel "live" broadcast. Getting there:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jade_Emperor_Pagoda
