Intern Brenna Sheets from Emerson College is joined by Cambridge Natural's Emily K. to discuss natural health and wellness in the modern age. They discuss how supplements and herbal teas are being used, marketed, and perceived in our fast-paced, wellness-obsessed society. Is our reliance on these products a sign of empowerment—taking control of our health in accessible ways—or are we sometimes buying into a wellness fantasy with unclear benefits?Thank you to our Campus Clipper advertiser for today, Cambridge Naturals! In episode 2 of The Graffito Podcast, we interview Josh Shirazi from Shirazi Distributing and Emily Kanter from Cambridge Naturals. First, Josh explains how his company went from one truck to 12,000SF of warehouse space, and he fills us in on how the collapse of the restaurant industry has impacted his business and the overall supply chain. Like most serious discussions with friends, the conversation digresses into less significant things like secondary market Slurpee machines. Fortunately, Emily restores some dignity to the podcast with a Cambridge Naturals history lesson, and explains why, despite an uptick in business during the early days of COVID, they shut their doors to regroup. All of this and more on Episode 2! In this week’s episode, we sat down with Emily Kanter, co-owner and CEO of Boston-area natural products retailer Cambridge Naturals. A family-owned business that operates two stores focused on nutritional supplements, body care products and organic foods and beverages, Cambridge Naturals has cultivated a loyal customer base within the Boston area and has been recognized for its unique and constantly rotating product selection. As part of our conversation, Kanter spoke about the history and evolution of the retailer and the factors that determine its selection. She also discussed how she develops relationships with brand owners and evaluates emerging trends and why Cambridge Naturals was one of the first area stores to carry CBD-infused products. Show notes: 0:38: Naturally, We Talked About Erewhon, Elevator Talk, Carlton and Odwalla -- The hosts chatted about their experiences shopping at Cambridge Naturals, encouraged entrepreneurs to continue sending news to BevNET and NOSH throughout the summer and also to apply for our Elevator Talk Livestream series. Later, they chatted about a star-making turn for actor Alfonso Ribeiro, Mike’s strange database of 80’s trivia and reflected on the recent decision by the Coca-Cola Co. to discontinue Odwalla. 11:48: Interview: Emily Kanter, Co-Owner/CEO, Cambridge Naturals -- Taste Radio editor Ray Latif spoke with Kanter about the recent reopening of Cambridge Naturals’ locations for in-store shopping, her decision to take the reins of her family’s business six years ago, why the retailer stopped selling groceries in the 1990’s and why it resumed a few years later. She also explained what she looks for in a brand’s backstory and what would make her less inclined to stock a new product, why Cambridge Naturals is consistently rotating its selection and why the company tries to be on “the cutting edge, but not bleeding edge” of emerging trends. Later, she expressed optimism that the FDA would provide concrete guidance about CBD-infused foods and beverages and how entrepreneurs interested in partnering with the retailer can connect with her team. Brands in this episode: Odwalla, Pepsi, Califia Farms, Naked Juice, Patagonia, The Coconut Cult, GT’s Kombucha, Waku

**Here's the second of the re-releases. It's with one of my personal brick and mortar favorites, Emily Kanter of Cambridge Naturals. This conversation doesn't disappoint. Tune in and remember that a new Keeping Shop episode drops on Tuesday, October 29th** Once I had a terrible sinus headache and I when I say headache, I mean this thing was crushing me. One of my Winks clients suggested that I get my sick self to Cambridge Naturals and while I'd been there many times it was always for fun stuff like make-up, probiotics, oils, teas...never to heal something like a headache. The super knowledgeable women in herbs gave me lots of suggestions including the insanely potent, locally sourced and incredibly powerful ground ginger that ultimately kicked my sinus headache to the curb. That stuff works. So when Cambridge Naturals owner Emily Kanter reached out to me I was flattered and a little star-struck. I think she and her team are kind of a big deal, but as you'll hear in the show she's super down to earth about the success of her business. It's been around since the 70's and has a ride or die following of people from all walks of life. Started by Emily's parents, the store was originally mostly natural and organic food stuff but has expanded over the years to include more products that make it more of a lifestyle shop rather than just a grocery store. From taking over the family business to expanding her space to being a champion for a natural lifestyle to selling authentically, Emily generously shares her experiences with us. Her story is valuable to us all, but especially to those looking to level up our shops in a way that keeps our values front and center. Emily shares how important it is to come into a situation with wide-open eyes and to observe thoroughly before trying to make changes. This chat was a pleasure. I hope you enjoy it too. We dive into: -Taking over a family business. -Allowing yourself the time to see the full picture of the business instead of jumping to make changes too quickly. -Opening a second location. -Creating a mission-centered business and continuing to build based on your core values. -Providing the education necessary to ensure that your client is comfortable buying your product. -The power of non-salesy selling. Enjoy!
We are back with an episode we’ve been so excited to record for SO long! Cambridge Naturals was founded in 1974 by Michael Kanter and Elizabeth Stagl (then 24 years old). Their mission is to provide the best choices in natural wellness products (nutritional supplements, clean body care, organic foods, and healthy lifestyle supplies) and offer an amazing customer experience to the local community. They are committed to sourcing products locally, organically, and ethically via fair trade and direct trade channels, and to donating a portion of our profits to social and environmental organizations that impact our community. As part of their vision for a more just, equitable and sustainable world, they strive to partner with businesses owned by women and under-served individuals. They offer a curated selection of wonderful products (we are obsessed with so many of the brands that they carry)! Chatting with Emily and Caleb about taking the reigns with Cambridge Naturals and managing day-in and day-out operations was absolutely enlightening. These two have so much passion behind what they are doing and are so energetic and engaging. We talk about - How they met and decided to move back to Boston to take on roles at Cambridge Naturals -What it was like taking the reigns in the stores -How they balance work life / family life when working with their significant others -Their vision for the future of CN’s and what’s coming up soon for them We know you guys will absolutely LOVE this episode! Cambridge Naturals is a staple to its local community - providing organic, fair-trade food and products in a local, independent setting. It is a home away from home for so many. A place to seek empowering knowledge for health issues, connect with like minded people and if i’m being honest, smell all of their products while sipping kombucha. Emily Kanter and her husband Caleb Dean, have taken over the business that Emily’s parents started 45 years ago. They both have an insane knowledge base for products in the health and wellness space. Now, Cambridge Naturals continues to grow - with two locations and a big team of employees. Emily, Caleb and I sat down over a cup of tea to discuss staying healthy and happy while carrying out the reputation of such a special store and what it takes to succeed in today’s market.
