This episode of the AAOS Career Podcast, hosted by Ellen Lutnick, MD, offers orthopaedic surgery residents a practical guide to navigating the fellowship application process, featuring perspectives from two experienced fellowship program leaders: Scott P. Steinmann, MD, FAAOS, Chair of the AAOS Board of Specialty Societies Fellowship Committee, and Roman M. Natoli, MD, PhD, FAAOS, Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship Program Director at Indiana University School of Medicine and Chair of the Fellowship & Career Choices Committee for the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA). Episode highlights: Addresses common myths about the fellowship application process, including the misconceptions that more applications lead to better outcomes and that research is the most important factor, while clarifying what programs actually prioritize. Emphasizes that the in-person interview and letters of recommendation carry more weight than many applicants expect, and that "fit" between a candidate and a program is often the deciding factor. Provides advice on how to ace in-person interviews, including leveraging personal connections with the interviewers, limiting your questions, and for those who get anxious during interviews: practice, practice, practice! Explains what not to do after an interview (e.g., don't call interviewers or send thank-you notes!). Highlights the newly introduced signaling process for fellowship applications, including its purpose and how applicants can use it strategically. Offers a preparation timeline by training year, from establishing credibility as a PGY1 or PGY2 to going all-in on applications as a PGY4. Offers encouragement to applicants, noting that the vast majority match within their top three choices. Host: Ellen Lutnick, MD, Resident Assembly Executive Committee Chair Guests: Scott P. Steinmann, MD, FAAOS, Chair, BOS Fellowship Committee; Emeritus faculty, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Mayo Clinic Roman M. Jeff Gould (“America's Storyteller”) sits down with Thadeus Amadeus Giedd for a conversation that starts light—misheard names, funny mix-ups, and Jeff's signature “JEFFARDY” question board—and gradually deepens into faith, leadership, fatherhood, and the power of living with intention. Thadeus, the longtime organizer behind TEDxSiouxFalls, shares what he believes makes a truly great TEDx talk: it's not a lecture—it's a story arc. The best speakers don't try to cram in everything they know; they deliver one unforgettable insight, one unexpected moment, and one powerful takeaway in just 15 minutes. From there, Thadeus opens up about the ideas shaping his life right now—especially his love for Stoicism (Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, Seneca) and how he's combined its virtues—courage, wisdom, justice, and temperance—with what he believes Stoicism lacks most: love. For Thadeus, letting Christ into his life didn't replace the discipline of Stoicism—it completed it. The conversation also turns personal as Thadeus talks candidly about depression, identity shifts, and how becoming a father changed him. Jeff and Thadeus explore modern parenting styles, the difference between gentleness and permissiveness, and the importance of accountability—especially the humility of admitting when you're wrong. Later, the interview shifts to leadership lessons from a recent men's summit featuring John Maxwell and Tim Tebow. Thadeus shares what stood out most: Maxwell's idea of making an impression from afar but creating impact up close, and Tebow's consistent message of living with urgency and intentionality—waking up each day asking, “How do I be a vessel today?” They close with a surprisingly emotional final moment: Thadeus gets one question to ask Jeff, and he chooses a question about memory—if Jeff could relive one day, what would it be? Jeff's answer lands like a quiet gut punch: a return to a simple moment at the table with his mother, fully present, noticing what he couldn't appreciate at the time. The episode ends with a shared reminder that gratitude and attention are not optional if you want a meaningful life. A funny, thoughtful, faith-forward conversation—anchored in story, grounded in real life, and full of practical takeaways. #JeffGould #AmericasStoryteller #PodcastInterview #ThadeusGiedd #TEDx #TEDxTalk #Leadership #Stoicism #FaithAndLife #ChristianPerspective #IntentionalLiving #Parenthood #LifeLessons #PersonalGrowth #Storytelling00:00 Introduction and Name Confusion 04:10 Exploring Biblical Parables 06:59 The Role of TEDx Talks 09:45 The Application Process for TEDx Talks 12:43 What Makes a Good TEDx Talk? 14:57 Stoicism and Love in Life 18:05 Parenting Perspectives and Lessons Learned 24:10 Exploring Connections with Influential Figures 27:10 Reflections on Wealth and Influence in Heaven 29:11 Making Impressions vs. Impacting Lives 32:06 Navigating Personal Struggles and Mental Health 35:57 The Power of Authenticity and Generosity 38:11 Dream Lunch with Heroes and Influencers Learn all about America's Storyteller on his website: https://www.ilikethatstory.com

Writing the "Why Our School?" essay is one of the toughest—and most overlooked—parts of the MBA application. In this episode, GMAC Zach sits down with Jeremy Shinewald, founder of MBA Mission and one of the most trusted voices in MBA admissions, to break down how to turn this high-stakes prompt into a powerful statement of fit. Jeremy explains why this essay is far more than a formality, where most applicants go wrong, and the three core components every strong response must include: your context, your goals, and a bridge that connects those goals to the school's specific resources. He also shares insider tips from two decades of advising thousands of candidates, including how to avoid sounding generic, why authenticity matters more than perfection, and how to demonstrate conviction that resonates with admissions committees. If you want to tell your story with clarity, purpose, and genuine fit, this episode is your roadmap. Featured Resources: mbaMission: https://www.mbamission.com onTrack by mbaMission: https://ontrack.mbamission.com About Our Guest: Jeremy Shinewald is the founder of mbaMission (Poets and Quants 4x top-ranked MBA admissions consulting firm) and is an industry founder, innovator and driver. He is the creator of onTrack by mbaMission, an asynchronous MBA admissions course and platform which Poets and Quants called, "the most comprehensive MBA admissions resource ever created." Jeremy's thought leadership has led to him being quoted in the WSJ, NYT and many other media outlets. Takeaways: The 'Why Our School' essay is crucial for MBA applications. Applicants often make the mistake of pandering to schools. Authenticity is key; don't try to be someone you're not. Understanding your goals before applying is essential. Researching schools thoroughly can enhance your application. Your personal statement should reflect genuine fit with the school. Communication skills are vital in the application process. Context in your essay should lead to your goals. Don't leave your application to the last minute. As the father of two prep school students, I was very eager to meet this week's guest. Jeffrey Selingo has written about college admissions for more than 25 years and is a New York Times bestselling author of four books, including Who Gets in and Why and his latest, Dream School: Finding the College That's Right for You. Drawing on two years of research and a survey of 3,000 parents to give families permission to think more broadly about what signals a “good” college for their child, Jeff outlines the excellent choices our kids have outside of the Top 20 schools that get so much of our attention. I found his book a reassuring and therapeutic guide as our family begins the college search process. The basic message is that there are a lot of great schools for our kids out there and, with a little effort, you and I can find a place where our son or daughter will belong and thrive. And isn't that the point? In this conversation, Jeff and I discuss the pressures surrounding elite college admissions, the evolving landscape of higher education, and the importance of finding the right fit for students. We explore the long-term financial implications of college choices, the impact of student debt, why parents are less willing to stretch financially for kids' college expenses, and the value of college experiences beyond academics. The discussion also touches on the competitive nature of elite schools, the future of college admissions, and the weird middle ground colleges have adopted around standardized testing. A regular contributor to The Atlantic, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, Jeff is also a special advisor to the president. He lives near Washington, D.C., with his own college-bound children. ✍️Please rate and review Reasonably Happy (https://ratethispodcast.com/paulopod) (Seriously, DO IT!) ✍️

Do you know how to tell your story authentically, not artificially? GMAC Zach and Susan Berishaj, founder of Sia Admissions, discuss the evolving role of AI in MBA admissions and the importance of authentic storytelling. They explore common misconceptions about the admissions process, the risks of over-reliance on AI, and the significance of introspection in crafting a compelling application. Susan shares her journey in founding Sia Admissions and emphasizes the need for applicants to find their unique voice and story, while also providing practical advice on how to navigate the application process effectively. Her clients span top global firms and industries, with admissions to every M7 and Top 20 program. Susan's process is rigorous, insight-driven, and built to position candidates as the kind of leaders business schools compete to admit. Takeaways: AI can assist in polishing applications but cannot replace authenticity. Admissions teams look for fit, resilience, and a clear vision beyond just grades. Introspection is crucial for applicants to understand their unique stories. AI should be used as a tool, not a crutch for critical thinking. An application must convey the applicant's soul and personal journey. Every applicant has a place in a business school that fits their goals. Leslie is joined by Connie Livingston, Senior Lead Counselor at Empowerly, which empowers students to become the most successful version of themselves with personalized college and career guidance. Their tailored guidance helps students triumph over the college admissions process and spark the future of their dreams. Connie has worked in the field of college counseling since 2008. She began her career as an Assistant Director of Admissions at Brown University and has since moved on to Empowerly, where she has worked for the past three years. The pair examines the increasingly difficult college application process in the United States. More and more students are applying to college. More and more applications means a lower percentage of acceptance. So the bar has been raised. 4.0's are now 5.0's, competition is international, there are no more DEI policies or 'boxes' for affirmative action/diversity. So kids are taking SAT prep classes, doing a lot of outside work/volunteerism, etc. and additionally, parents are hiring college counselors. Here are the questions answered during the interview: 1. What does an outside college counselor do? 2. Is there a range of fees? (Some people think it's unattainable for them because of the price) 3. Do they help the students write their essays? (editing them, etc) 4. Is there any assistance with SAT's? 5. Does it increase a student's chances of admission if they utilize a college counselor that is separate from their high school's college counselor? 6. Why is Empowerly better than a student trying to solely use AI, like ChatGPT, to help them with the admissions process? The website for Empowerly is Empowerly.org. Their handle on Instagram is @empowerlyinc and you can find them on Facebook.com/empowerly as well.
