“I don't think military spouses want charity. I think they just want the opportunity to provide for their families or stay connected to something consistent.” – Lisa Bradley When Lisa Bradley and her co-founder Cameron Cruse, both military spouses, started R.Riveter in 2011, it wasn't just about making handbags—it was about creating opportunity, community, and ... R. Riveter is a company started by two Army spouses that employ other military spouses across the country to create beautiful and meaningful handbags and gifts that represent the stories of each woman who worked on them. Their business model allows these women to have productive and flexible careers while following their military spouses from one assignment to the next. Just like their namesake, R. Riveter, is a symbol of a true purpose-driven sisterhood, one that aims to help create a better future for everyone. Teaming up with “Shark” and billionaire investor Mark Cuban in 2016 allowed for much of this expansion. The company was started by Lisa Bradley and Cameron Cruise. Lisa Bradley, CEO/Co-Founder Lisa grew up in Columbus, MT–a small Rocky Mountain town. She studied Business and Entrepreneurship in the “big city” of Bismarck, ND, where she met Jason Bradley. Soon after, she married into the Army and the two enjoyed four duty stations in just over six years. Lisa combined a “roll up the sleeves” mentality with her MBA to launch R. Riveter with her friend and co-founder, Cameron Cruse. Lisa was named one of the 25 people changing the future of retail in 2019 by the National Retail Foundation. Cameron Cruse, CCO/Co-Founder Cameron Cruse co-founded R. Riveter in 2011 and set out to provide mobile, flexible income for military spouses across the country. She graduated from SCAD, first with a BFA in 2010, and then again with a master's in architecture in 2011.From 2014-2021 she lived in Southern Pines, NC with her family which became home for the company's flagship Retail store. She is currently living life “tiny” in an RV with her family as they build their dream home and start their next chapter in the great state of Texas. Cameron was named one of the25 people changing the future of retail in 2019 by the NRF and Apparel's 30 under 30 in 2018. Cameron is a mother of two and proud Military Spouse. She is a firm believer that we are stronger together than we are apart. Sara talks with Lisa and Cameron all about their story and progress with their business and as Military spouses, Lisa and Cameron joined together to do something not only creative, but also created jobs for other military spouses that move around a lot. Bradley and Cruse looked to the original Rosie the Riveter for inspiration. Today, R. Riveter's unique production model puts military spouses to work, crafting components of the handbags from their homes, no matter where they live or how often they move. They talk also about their successful appearance on Shark Tank in 2016 and made a match with entrepreneur Mark Cuban. Hear how they talked of backing out prior to their appearance. And how they pushed themselves to do a hard thing and how it so paid off. They were off on a faster growth track and it's worked out for their thriving business. Riveter continues to grow its network of military spouses "R. Riveter doesn't hire military spouses to make handbags. We make handbags to hire military spouses, and create a greater sense of mission," said Cruse. Military spouses also hold roles in product design, project management, marketing, and more. What can be more timely now than highlighting these entrepreneurs with a mission? Military spouses is it's own community.. moving every few years, being the stay-at-home mom, holding things together while their husbands can be anywhere and in various degrees of danger. R.Riveter holds the community in a circle of creativity, community and earning potential for the spouses. Yes, as Sara says, Live Boldly and We Can Do Hard Things!! Our next guest co-founded R.Riveter, which was initially a handbag company but now offer many more accessories for both women and men. Everything from R.Riveter is American made and American sourced, and because these entrepreneurs are military wives who understand having to stay mobile, they are providing remote work opportunities for other military spouses all over the country. After steadily growing the business off an initial $9,000 investment, they went onto SharkTank and struck a deal with Mark Cuban. They have been exploding ever since… Neither Rosie the Riveter nor their Army Ranger husbands can keep up with these lady's work ethic and drive. Please welcome our next badass to the stage, Cameron Cruse Watch the Video on YouTube!

Making money as a military spouse is a mission in itself. We all know milspouse un and underemployment takes its toll on a military family's budget. To tackle the challenge many milspouses are thinking outside the box to create their own earning power. My guests did just a thing but on a big scale. In this episode, I talk with Lisa Bradley and Cameron Cruse the founders of the uber-successful handbag company, R. Riveter about creating income through entrepreneurship. Saying they're a handbag company is an understatement of their brand. Cameron and Lisa not only created a company to solve their own income and employment struggles, but they also created a company that helps hundreds of other milspouses earn a living wherever the military sends them. On today's episode of On The Spot, we sit down with Cameron Cruse, the co-founder R. Riveter (https://www.rriveter.com/), a company founded by military spouses for military spouses. R.Riveter provides remote employment opportunities for military spouses from all over the country. Cameron Cruse faced a problem common to those who marry into the military: it's hard to find a job and build a career when your partner's military service require relocating frequently. So she teamed with fellow military spouse Lisa Bradley to put people like themselves to work making high-end handbags. Cameron met Lisa when both of their husbands were stationed in Georgia. They'd heard about the Create Jobs for USA campaign, which sparked their business model. They started in 2011 and created a Kickstarter fund in 2014, helping their hobby grow into a full-blown enterprise. In 2016, the two women pitched the idea on the popular show Shark Tank, and the experience helped teach them how to keep their momentum going. In 2017, the company's net revenue was $2.3 million. Key takeaways: > “You have to stay hungry… Anytime you get comfortable or you start to slow down, you’re ultimately going backwards.” ICYMI: Make sure to check out Cameron's On The Dot #WomanToWatch feature alongside her co-founder Lisa Bradley on our website OnTheDotWoman.com (https://onthedotwoman.com/woman/lisa-bradley-and-cameron-cruse) and on our daily newsletter and podcast Four Minutes With On The Dot (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/four-minutes-with-on-the-dot/id1309880515?mt=2)! We're starting 2019 with fashion and flare! Our very first guest on the show is Alta Alexander, the founder and owner of the up-scale east-Austin boutique, Altatudes! Alexander found the inspiration for Altatudes (https://www.altatudes.com/) nearly 17 years ago, when her now husband asked her if what she would do if she were an entrepreneur. Alta earned her Bachelor's in Business and Communications, then held a number of managerial positions at high-end boutiques and department stores. On working in the corporate tech world she says, > "I believe, just thinking about it and looking back, as soon as I got to whatever room I was in, that’s what I would do. I would go to another woman. I felt more comfortable, of course, with someone who was like me.” Her store has given her the opportunity to live out her childhood dream, but also to provide others the opportunity to expand on their own "tude," or their style. Alta styles customers to achieve their fashion goals, whether it's for an upcoming event date or work presentation. Alta says she gets her style inspiration from her mom and grandmother. On the side, Alta gives back to her community, which she says is integral to the boutique's success. _"In my earlier career life, yeah, there were lots of times I was the only African-American in the room. And these were some of my first introductions to just kind of pushing through the fear, you know, just making sure that you just don’t become a wallflower. Just because you’re the only one of a certain hue in the room. And I would tell myself as I was going to whatever event, so you’re gonna probably be the only one, so you’re going to have to deal with it. And luckily people were pretty embracive.” _ “I wanna be here every day, I wanna be here everyday so that I can really meet and engage with my customers. So that’s really big for me. I like to be able to at least know that since I’m horrible with names, always have been, but I can tell you the dress that you liked, and I can usually tell you the dress that you’re probably gonna get because I’ve seen you come in before, which things you kind of gravitate to, so I like having that kind of reference point.” Key takeaways: _“There are going to be many many points of fear, and I just say push through the fear." _ ICYMI: Make sure to check out Alta's On The Dot #WomanToWatch feature on our website OnTheDotWoman.com (https://onthedotwoman.com/woman/alta-alexander) and on our daily newsletter and podcast Four Minutes With On The Dot (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/four-minutes-with-on-the-dot/id1309880515?mt=2)! It's hard to find work, maybe because they have babies and they live on base and their extended family is far away for example. The company is named after Rosie the Riveter the WW II nickname for women that worked in the factory. Their products all have military names etc and are really nice. Some simply call it a handbag. We call it a mission.

In this episode of Drop and Give Me 20, Lindsey Germono speaks with Cameron Cruse, co-founder of R. Riveter. Important topics they discuss: Creating a company that provides military spouses with employment they can take with them when PCS'ing. The Shark tank experience and partnering with Mark Cuban "I think Shark Tank was one of the more terrifying things that we had done just because it forced us to look at who we are, what we're trying to do with this company, and how do we best support our military spouses." As military spouses, so many times we're pulling that double duty- we have so much going on in our lives. We started with the why- this is the glue. Benefits of having a partner in business. The future of R. Riveter. Quote: "Understand where you want to be and where you are and don't be afraid of the in between." -Cameron Cruse Social: Twitter Facebook Instagram Website
