With host retail coach Wendy Batten https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/ Episode Overview In this episode of the Creative Shop Talk Podcast, I'm sharing seven common patterns I see repeatedly with independent retailers who are working hard but still feeling stuck. These are habits, mindset patterns, and blind spots that can keep us from reaching the goals we truly want. As I was making this list from conversations with clients, I realized I've experienced every one of these things myself throughout my years in business. Some of the highlights: vague goals, overthinking, avoiding difficult conversations, staying attached to old identities, and the importance of tracking numbers and reviewing what's actually happening in our businesses. My hope is that this episode helps you notice where you may be holding yourself back without even realizing it. If you've been feeling like you're capable of more but can't quite identify what's standing in the way, I hope this episode is an opportunity to pause, reflect, and start getting honest about what needs to change. Our Key Topics Why vague goals make it difficult to create meaningful progress The impact of overthinking and analysis paralysis Trying to build a business without support or mentorship and why that's a bad idea Why you need to stop avoiding uncomfortable conversations, tasks, or realities The importance of regular business and self check-ins Why tracking numbers and data matters for decision making Moving from staying comfortable to stepping into leadership 7 Things That May Be Holding You Back in Your Retail Business You are setting vague goals. Are you being clear or specific about what you actually want to achieve? You are overthinking the how. Getting stuck in analysis paralysis instead of taking the next small step. Remember, done is better than perfect. You are trying to do it alone. Do not allow yourself to avoid support, delegation, coaching, or bringing in help. You are living in an old identity. Are you staying attached to an earlier version of yourself or your role in the business instead of evolving into leadership that no longer serves you, your business, or your customers? As your business evolves, so does your role as CEO. You are ostriching or committing emotional avoidance. Are you avoiding uncomfortable conversations, tasks, truths (i.e. your numbers), or decisions? Sit down for 10 quiet minutes and be honest with yourself about what you are avoiding. "If you knew the answer, what would it be?" You are not doing business and self check-ins. Moving week to week without reflecting, reviewing, or paying attention to what's working and what isn't can cause huge issues in your business. You are not tracking anything. Are you avoiding numbers, metrics, and data that help you understand what's really happening in the business? I hope this episode gives you a few honest places to reflect and helps you move toward the kind of business and life you truly want. With host retail coach Wendy Batten https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/ Episode Overview What if spring cleaning your business had nothing to do with your shelves and everything to do with what's going on in your head? Let me explain. In this episode, I'm talking about spring cleaning your retail business, but not in the way you might expect. We all know how to tidy up our shops, review inventory, or refresh marketing, but knowing what to do is not usually the problem. It is taking the time and action that matters. I'm sharing why the real work often starts with clearing out what is happening in our minds. From the assumptions we are making to the constant consumption of information, this episode is about creating space to think clearly, make decisions, and move forward with intention. This kind of reset can help you feel more grounded and in control of your business again. Our Key Topics The difference between knowing what to do and actually taking action Common areas of business that may need attention like inventory, finances, and marketing The importance of stepping into the CEO role and doing regular check-ins Spring cleaning your mindset, assumptions, and consumption Creating intentional time to think without distractions Identifying what is in your control versus what is not Taking action without judgment and asking for outside perspective when needed Key Takeaways for Shop Owners You already know what needs attention in your business, the work is in making time and taking action. It is less about learning something new and more about following through on what you already see. Awareness comes first, then action, without judgment. When you can acknowledge what is not working without piling on guilt, it becomes much easier to move forward. Not everything deserves your energy, focus on what you can control. Letting go of what is outside your control creates more space for meaningful progress. Too much consumption can block clarity and action. When you step away from constant input, you give yourself the chance to think and lead more intentionally. Regular reflection and intentional time are essential for running a healthy business. Even small pockets of quiet time can help you reconnect with what actually matters. Take a 25 minute walk this week without consuming: no podcasts, no music, no phone calls. Just a little time with yourself to check in and notice what is ready to be cleared so you can move forward with more clarity. Let me know how it goes over @wendybatten.biz on Instagram! Have you been feeling stuck in your own head in your retail business? Overthinking every decision, wondering if you're the only one finding it hard? There's a phrase I love:You can't read a label from inside the jar.And when you're living and breathing your business every single day, it's incredibly hard to see beyond where you are right now.In this episode, I share one of the fastest ways I've found to shift your perspective — and it's the whole reason I created Retail Roar, my free online summit returning on 26–27 March.I'll walk you through some of the stories from our guest speakers, including one who shipped 650,000 orders in his first year on TikTok, to others who built a chain of 41 bridal boutiques, and another who went from her kitchen table to six-figure months.I also explain why inspiration isn't just about feeling good — it has three very real, practical business effects: it helps you think bigger, get re-energised with your marketing, and make braver decisions.Sign up free at retailroar.co.uk — come and see what's possible.
We'd love to have your feedback and ideas for future episodes of Retail Unwrapped. Just text us!How does the retail frontline succeed, despite leadership dysfunction? The disconnect between corporate decision-making and the frontline reality has reached a breaking point. Store managers are caught holding the bag for supply chain disasters, tariffs, empty shelves, and operational chaos they never created. Join Shelley and Rachel Williamson, founder and CEO of Running Great Stores, as they unpack how frontline operational excellence is compromised when managers are denied the tools, training and authority they need to succeed. Rachel says that great leadership requires continuous investment in self-improvement, honest conversations with supervisors, and a willingness to address both wins and failures. She has spent decades turning around underperforming stores and she's witnessed firsthand what happens when flawed corporate leadership disables store teams. She is candid about the uncomfortable truth that retail has become a revolving door job instead of a career destination. The weakest link? Frontline leaders who lack the mentorship and training they need to develop the capacity for emotional intelligence. Frontline leaders who succeed have learned to take ownership of their own career development instead of depending on corporate training programs. With host retail coach Wendy Batten https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/ Episode Overview In this episode, I'm talking with Level Up Mastermind & Inner Circle member Amy Cseh about how live social selling utterly transformed her retail business at her shop, Schoolhouse Salvage in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Amy shares how live selling began as a way to use slow in-store hours more effectively and gradually evolved into the primary way customers shopped with Schoolhouse Salvage. Amy talks us through how her business shifted over 13 years, including the move from storage unit to physical retail space to being mostly online with limited open hours. She explains how responding to customer engagement during live sales helped shape decisions about inventory, space, and how the business operates today. Listeners will gain clarity on how social selling can grow organically, how it can serve an existing customer base, and how it can support long-term sustainability without forcing a specific retail model. This is the motivating conversation every retailer needs right now. Our Key Topics How Amy flipped the script from slow retail hours on a Wednesday night to a team of 15 by taking the first step of turning on her camera The encouragement all retailers need to hear to turn their cameras on NOW How to use Facebook live sales to sell inventory - no matter what business you are in How customers responded to live selling early on and how it has evolved over the past 7 years Transitioning from brick and mortar to mostly online sales by doubling down on what was working for Amy Serving community through online engagement with a happy heart - this goes for your team and your customers/clients Key Takeaways around Live Social Selling Social selling can begin as a small experiment. Just turn the camera on! Bring your shop to your customers. Get out of your own way. Build a system that works for you. Don't want to ship? Start without shipping. Live selling can supplement and even drive in-store traffic. Live social selling isn't just for those without regular retail hours, but be sure you are wanting to do the work necessary of adding another revenue stream to your business. Online community can become the primary sales driver. Be consistent and engage in the comments. Pour into your customers. Commit to it. Loyalty will follow. Retail models can shift gradually over time. Amy shares the story of how her business started by collecting salvaged pieces from tear-downs that were otherwise going to be discarded. Her business has evolved tremendously over the past 13 years in a way that is truly inspiring. Follow along with Amy and her team on Facebook and watch them work. Amy has also documented the systems and resources used by Schoolhouse Salvage that support the success of their business. Her methods are tried and true - there is no fluff. With host retail coach Wendy Batten https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/ Episode Overview Ever find yourself wondering "Where do I start when I'm juggling multiple priorities in my retail business?" You're not alone. I'm addressing this question that's been asked many times since Episode 290 dropped at the beginning of the year. In this episode, I'll lay out the most important steps to focus on FIRST in order to achieve the success you want this year in your retail business. You'll learn why clarity around your numbers and a growth mindset are the foundations for building a sustainable, profitable shop. Our Key Topics Fully taking on the CEO and CFO roles within your business The dangers of chasing revenue numbers without understanding profit or margins Defining why your business exists and aligning it with your desired lifestyle Managing inventory as your biggest business asset Identifying and overcoming automatic negative thoughts (ANTs) The importance of seeking professional coaching and support Let's Prioritize These Things in Your Business Know your numbers beyond just revenue. You must understand the variables like margins, expenses, and inventory turns that lead to actual profit. A business that supports your life, not the other way around. This requires planning for a personal paycheck and defining success on your own terms. Paying attention to your "growth mindset" brain. This includes reading financial reports, managing open-to-buy programs, and being comfortable with the discomfort of change, among other things. Avoid the "accidental entrepreneur" trap. Clearly define your business motivation and reverse-engineer your goals from the bottom up. "Stop chasing other people's version of success." -Wendy Batten Your next step? Why Retail Business Growth Starts to Feel Heavy at Six FiguresIf your retail business is doing well on paper, but somehow feels heavier than it used to, this episode is for you. With thanks to this episode's sponsor SumUp.com.Get 10% off hardware with the code GamePlan10.I'm Catherine Erdly, and this is the Resilient Retail Game Plan — product business advice with a healthy dose of reality. This isn't about chasing more sales or adding more tactics. It's about the moment growth stops feeling exciting and starts feeling risky. When decisions feel heavier. When stock, cash flow and planning won't switch off in your head. And when everyone assumes you're doing brilliantly, but you're quietly feeling stretched. After 25 years in retail, I've seen this pattern again and again. Hitting six figures doesn't magically make things easier. For many founders, it's the point where relying on instinct stops working and structure becomes essential. In this episode, I talk through why growth often starts to feel heavy at this stage, why it's not a motivation problem, and what actually helps founders move from reacting to leading again. I also explain how Retail by Design and Stock Doctor work together to bring clarity, calm and confidence back into growing product businesses — without overwhelm or fluff. If you're tired of winging it, second-guessing decisions, or carrying everything in your head, this episode will help you understand what's really going on — and what support should look like at this stage of growth.Chapters:00:00 The 'Heaviness' Struggle for Product Retailers05:42 Stock & Strategy Solutions06:49 "Retail Growth Through Stock Insight"10:06 "Retail by Design Program"Links:Website: https://resilientretailclub.comRetail Sales Game Plan: https://www.resilientretailclub.com/retailsales/Enjoy the episode?DM me your takeaways or questions @resilientretailclub on Instagram. With host retail coach Wendy Batten https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/ In This Episode: You know that shop down the street that always seems to be doing well? The one that looks calm, confident, and steady while everyone else feels frantic? In this Season 6 kickoff episode of Creative Shop Talk, I'm pulling back the curtain on what's actually happening behind the scenes and sharing my 7 predictions for what independent retailers need to focus on in 2026 if they want a business that lasts. This episode is not about doing more. It's about focusing on what matters. We're talking about building a brand that means something, understanding profit instead of just chasing sales, making smarter inventory decisions, designing intentional customer experiences, building systems that don't rely on you, stepping fully into your CEO role, and defining success in a way that includes your life, not just your revenue. If you're an established shop owner who wants sustainability, clarity, and momentum going into 2026, this episode will help you cut through the noise and focus on what actually matters. Key Takeaways A real brand is built on trust, standards, and consistency, not just visuals. Sales don't equal profit. You need clarity on what actually drives profit. The strongest decisions come from a blend of intuition, experience, and data. Inventory is working capital, not decor. You're not competing with Amazon. You're competing with indifference. If your business can't function without you, you've built a job, not a company. CEO-level leadership brings calm, clarity, and direction. A successful business that costs you your life is not success. 7 Focus Areas in Your Retail Biz in 2026: 1. Build a brand that actually means something. Your brand is the promise you keep. Standards, consistency, and trust matter more than aesthetics. 2. Get real profit clarity. Revenue can look impressive while profit quietly disappears. Understand margins and true profit drivers. 3. Treat inventory like the asset it is. Inventory is cash tied up on your shelves. Buy intentionally and review performance regularly. 4. Design the customer experience on purpose. Experience is strategy. Every touchpoint should be intentional. 5. Build systems that don't rely on you. If everything funnels through you, growth stalls. Systems create leverage. 6. Step fully into your CEO role. CEO leadership means direction, standards, and decision-making, not people-pleasing. 7. Define success in a way that includes your life. Start with the life you want, then build the business to support it. "Your business should support your life. That's not indulgent. It's intelligent." -Wendy Batten Related podcasts we think you'll like: Episode 118: How To Create Loyalty and Amazing Customer Experiences with Guest Expert & Author: Shep Hyken Episode 243: Behind the Counter: Creating Customer Joy in Retail with Kim Williams of The Polka Dot Press Episode 274: Is Your Customer Journey Map Working? Retail buying doesn't have to be overwhelming—or lonely. This week, Ashley sits down with Angela Schmook (Roadrunners, Reps Are Local Too) and Kelly Bristol (Just Gotta Have It, GHTA leader) to reveal why your local sales reps might be the most powerful, underused resource in your business. Fresh from the GHTA Conference in Park City, they break down how reps support retailers far beyond taking orders: helping with events, securing promos and exclusives, spotting local trends, and giving you insider knowledge you'll never get from ordering online. They also unpack the shift toward lifestyle retail—where home, gift, and apparel collide—and how to approach markets with confidence, even if you've never stepped inside a showroom before. You'll learn: What reps really do and why working with one is free How reps help you buy smarter, plan better, and spot trends early How showrooms actually work (and why you shouldn't feel intimidated) Why home, gift, and apparel are merging into lifestyle retail How to prepare for January markets and build stronger vendor relationships

Will Google's new AI strategy kill ecommerce as you know it? In this episode of Growing Ecommerce, Mike Ryan and Chris Scharmueller dissect the biggest news from DMEXCO 2025 in Cologne, Germany, and reveal their bold take on the future of paid search and online retail.Chris shares his on-the-ground insights from the conference, including his talk on a major stage in front of over 600 people. He and Mike dive deep into why Google Search is still an unstoppable "money printing machine" despite new competitors like ChatGPT and Perplexity. They discuss staggering online search stats, like the 5.8 trillion search queries that happen globally each year, with over 90% of them going through Google. But here's the twist: They explore how new AI products like AI Overviews (AIOs) are already creating "zero-click events", which could massively disrupt the classic e-commerce funnel. Could Google's "buy on Google" feature make a comeback? And if it does, what does it mean for retailers who could become just a "warehouse for Google"?This episode isn't just about what's happening; it's about what's coming. With host retail coach Wendy Batten https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/ In This Episode: Helping and inspiring independent retailers is my passion (and my job!), but I would be remiss if I never shared how inspiring my retailers are to ME. Their inspiration is never more apparent than when we are all together in person: talking shop, ruminating on all the things, and brainstorming through big ideas. In this episode, I'm sharing some of my takeaways from my Level Up Mastermind Retreat in early April in Thomasville, Georgia. I'm always learning from my retailers and amazed by their ideas and this retreat was no different. There is something very inspiring about getting a group of like-minded people together who are working toward a similar goal: running a successful independent retail shop. I hope these takeaways inspire you to try something new to move the needle in your retail business. Takeaways for Independent Retailers: Bravery is contagious: It's important to surround yourself with people who are on your side. Making a decision and being brave enough to stick to it when you see the needle starting to move and/or having the courage to course correct if it's not working Collaborations & community are super hot right now: Everyone in your community has the same goal: growing and thriving in a community that supports them. Look to your community for inspiring people: Annie Jones of The Bookshelf in Thomasville showed us that building multiple revenue streams and marketing differently works. (You can follow along with her Instagram at @bookshelftville) Lean into others: You cannot do this alone! I also wanted to give a quick shoutout to YOU! Thanks to your support, the podcast has reached 100,000+ downloads! Need more? Join me and our supportive community of retailers in my Retailer's Inner Circle! “There's no secret formula—we just refused to stop.” In this episode, the founders of Ivy City Co—Natasha Thomas, Whitney Smith, and Madeline Hamilton—sit down with Jeremy Brockbank and Bri Ray to unpack the real story behind one of the fastest-growing fashion brands in the country. They talk about launching without industry connections, growing a team from scratch, and how staying relentlessly focused on the customer has shaped every decision—from design to operations to scale. It's not about perfection—it's about persistence, learning as you go, and never losing sight of your why. If you're building something meaningful and ambitious, this conversation is a blueprint worth hearing. #VolcanicRetail #RetailCollective #IvyCityCo #ModernRetail #BrandGrowth #FounderJourney #BuiltDifferent #NextGenRetail
