Want to see if he can run 1:46,45 to break the HS record. Only two HSers under 1:46 ever. Love his attitude. Focusing on World Juniors. Love his attitude & approach. He's into MMA & brings that warrior mindset to an event that may be the closest to a MMA fight in energy & ferocity. https://trackandfieldnews.com/high-schooler-cade-flatt-focusing-on-no-1-in-the-800/Tomek: I like Cade. Women's 800m at US Champs & World Champs - With Ajee WIlson's win at WIC, how will Athing Mu respond? How does the new guard (Mu, Raeven Rogers, Michaela Meyer, Allie WIlson) of American women in the 800m respond to the “older” guard (A.Wlson, Kate Grace, Chanelle Price). There are HS athletes who we are still seeing amazing things from recently (Roisin WIllis-17 yo Sr - 2:00.05), Sophia Gorriaran-16 yo Jr -2:00.58) with new HS records this indoor season. That's just the US. At WIC we missed seeing the two UK women who were finalist & one a medalist at the Games, I expect to see many epic battles at this distance. Watch the women's 800m OT Final 8 of the 9 finalists went under 2:00 & the 9th finished (Nia Atkins) fell down in the first 200m. Tomek: For sure, that would be interesting. Especially, this is going to be Athing's first full pro year: Less races, more pressure to perform when it counts etc. At least she is at the same training/life environment as last year. Elise Cranny - She's run 14:33i & 30:14 out. SHe has ferocity, hunger, mental toughness & is poised to be our most competitive 5K/10K athlete in multiple generations. I won't be surprised with a WC medal in Eugene & the women's world elite 5K/10K is not a place we expect to see an America woman from a tiny town in Colorado. Expect Jerry to have her ready & there is a seething anger boiling in the bellies of the Bowerman women. I expect Cranny to be all piss & vinegar at the WC Trial & WC in Eugene. Tomek: Also Karrisa Schwizer is back. And I doubt she wants to give away #1 5K-er to Elise ;-) But Elise showed good 1500m speed in her last race, which makes her hard to beat at 5k. Men's 1500/5K - With the Ingebretsen/Cheryuiot duels now at an epic level how will the rest of the world respond, esp the surging Aussie/UK threats. Add an invigorated Ethiopian contingent & a rested recovered Cheptegei at the 5K, we are in for a very exciting series of races where Jakob now has the full weight of the pressure on his shoulders. Additionally, we have Grant Fisher/Mo Ahmed in the 5K/10K where the can be expected to be in the mix. This will be very interesting. Tomek: 1500m I bet Jakob is only thinking about WR :-) But then again, lots of changes in Team Ingebritsen Tomek's Most Anticipated: US 1500m Can youngsters repeat 2021: Hocker, Hobbs, NeguseIs Centro done? "Taking it back to 2017, that's when the trials and tribulations started. I found out about some blood clots in my lungs in Jan. 2017 and it seemed like ever since then it was one thing after another. That same year, I found out I came back from those blood clots way too quickly and my body just shut down. In the summer of 2017, I had mono. 2017 was when I fractured my metatarsal for the first time. 2018 was when I fractured it again and ended up getting surgery. 2019 was just me just trying to come back from the foot surgery and that's when I made the decision to join OTC and really get some help with that foot injury. When COVID hit, I was like, 'Oh my gosh! I'm finally healthy!' and then in Nov. 2020 when I fractured it for the third time that's when I was like, 'I don't know if I can do this again.' Having a dream of being in that Olympic Trials final and giving myself a shot at making the team was what kept me going." We catch up with Oregon Track Club's Chanelle Price on her season that included being injured in February to placing fifth in the women's 800 meter final at the U.S. Olympic Trials + what comes next for her. Loved this interview because it was reflective of the true journey Chanelle has been on as an athlete and person since she first qualified for the Olympic Trials as a high schooler to today. Hope you enjoy and learn something from her about the power of perseverance and grit it takes to go through the ups and downs of a professional career. SPONSOR: The new season is powered by Nike. As a sophomore in high school, I decided to join the cross country team because I didn't have to try out! Rejection was more than I could handle during the first year of being at a boarding school that was two states away from my family. I thought I was going to die during my first few practices but by God's grace, I eventually improved and ended up thoroughly enjoying running long distance.Track, on the other hand, wasn't in my wheelhouse. (You'll have to listen to today's episode to know why.) That's why I tip my hat to amazing runners like Chanelle Price. This is a woman who began running in her childhood and never gave up on her dream of competing professionally. In fact, Chanelle is preparing to compete this week in the 2021 Olympic Trials so she can qualify to represent the United States in Japan. What I love about Chanelle is her honesty and transparency and I believe you will, too. Her authenticity is inspiring and gives hope to so many of us who struggle with remembering where our value lies as well as who we really are.In this week's season finale, Chanelle shares with us:why she began running competitively, how she found God in one of her lowest moments, how God worked to debunk a myth about Christianity in her life, how God can use our gifts and story for His glory, and more!Scripture ReferencesI planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. “I think you can almost want something too bad. Because I just wanted it so bad. I wasn’t relaxed. It wasn’t fun anymore. It was just tunnel vision on winning — and I wasn’t winning! I wanted it so bad and it wasn’t happening. It was very draining.” What happens when you set big, dreamy, lofty goals — but when it counts the most, you fall short? That’s what this series, “Just Missed,” is about. These conversations are about dealing with disappointment. They are reminders that progress is never linear, and that it’s not always the big wins or the losses that define us, but the moments in between. So far on this series, we’ve heard from Julia Lucas and HOKA NAZ Elite athlete Kellyn Taylor. Today, Oregon Track Club’s Chanelle Price is here. Chanelle was a standout athlete in high school. She was named Gatorade’s Athlete of the Year, and became addicted to winning. But when she went away to college at the University of Tennessee, she was no longer “high school Chanelle.” She wasn’t winning. She wasn’t the fastest on the team. And she struggled. She had a goal of becoming an NCAA 800m champion, but missed that goal, finishing second at both indoors and outdoors. From there, Chanelle’s running career saw high highs and challenging lows. She decided to compete at the professional level, but struggled to find a sponsor early on. In 2014, Chanelle had a breakthrough: She won gold in the 800m at the World Athletics Indoor Championships, and became the only American woman to ever win a gold medal there. She signed with Nike. She won gold — three times — as a member of Team USA’s 4x800m relay at World Athletics Championships. She ran a personal best in the 800m: 1:59.10. Then, in 2017, it all came crashing down. The hits came in rapid succession: a foot fracture, a pulmonary embolism that led to blood clots in her lungs, and, ultimately, a bout with mononucleosis. All of that led to her losing her sponsor. It all could’ve been career-ending, but Chanelle wouldn’t let that happen. She mounted a comeback — and last year, dealt with another foot fracture. Today, Chanelle is up and running (up, literally, at altitude), gearing up for the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials. This is her story. World Champion runner, Chanelle Price, joins Laura today to share her remarkable story and the lessons she has learned through it all. A supremely talented elite athlete, Chanelle’s many achievements include competing at the 2007 USA Outdoor Championships at the age of 16, running the second fastest 800m of all time by a high school female which qualified her for the Olympic Trials when she was 17, and becoming the 2014 World IAAF Indoor Champion – the first American woman to ever win 800m gold at an indoor or outdoor world championship. Along with these great successes, Chanelle has experienced some devastating low points in her career, and she courageously discusses them all here today. She begins by sharing how she came to find her way into track, her early successes, her struggles with insecurity, and the dark days of her time at college. Chanelle then provides a highly personal account of the factors that led her to contemplate suicide, and how beginning her journey with Christianity pulled her through that tragic time. She also discusses the many challenges she still had to face throughout this journey, the difference between her Olympic Trials experiences, and training for Tokyo during COVID. She draws the conversation to a close by highlighting the importance of maintaining a healthy relationship with sport, surrounding yourself with the right supportive people, her current definition of success, and the crucial role her ‘why’ plays in keeping her motivated and moving forward. Chanelle holds nothing back as she recounts the shining mountain peaks and dark, dark valleys she has encountered in her fascinating journey, and how these have helped her to become the woman she is today - an individual overflowing with faith, strength, character, and commitment, who undoubtedly ‘brings a smile to God’s face’. Episode Highlights: How Chanelle found her way into track Her early success Chanelle’s struggles with insecurity Her college experience Seeking a sponsorship deal Chanelle’s contemplation of suicide Her journey with Christianity Drifting away from and returning to God The many challenges Chanelle has worked through Moving to train in Eugene, Oregon Training for Tokyo during COVID Chanelle’s Olympic Trials experiences The importance of maintaining a healthy relationship with sport and surrounding yourself with supportive people Her current definition of success Chanelle’s ‘why’ Quotes: “I just didn’t really find track fun. It felt more like punishment.” “Once I started that singular focus on track once I got to high school, you know, it really paid off.” “It was definitely the success that got me to like it.” “That is where my sense of identity came from was my achievement on the track.” “I don’t know who I am if I’m not Chanelle Price the track star.” “It was like a 100 pound weight on my shoulders every time I went to race.” “Behind closed doors, I was really, really, really struggling.” “Chase after Me like you chase after track.” “Your worth is not based off of how you perform out there on the track.” “To whom much is given, much is required.” “I was just a completely different person on the track.” “You know, God, I’m going to come back to You.” “The past 4 years have been the hardest years of my life…He answered, but it just wasn’t really what I expected.” “I miss being that desperate for Him.” “It was a very humbling experience.” “God, I don’t know what You’re doing, but I’m about to break here…I don’t know if I can take this.” “Every other month I said I was going to quit.” “Maybe He’s telling me it’s time to move on.” “I knew that this extra year was definitely a blessing in disguise for me.” “Honestly, I considered retirement after that.” “The woman that you have become through this journey is worth it.” “I’m not thinking about anything else besides using my gift, and for me that’s when things seem to fall into place.” “Some pressure is good, don’t get me wrong, but it shouldn’t get you to the point of suicide like it has for me in the past…that is not a healthy relationship with sport.” “This is what you do. It’s not who you are.” “The person that we become along the way - I think that’s what brings a smile to God’s face.” “The sole thing that kept me going was my ‘why’.” “Don’t sacrifice the gift.” “There is always hope beyond what is happening in front us right now.” Links: The Pursuit of Gold homepage 5 Smart Strategies to Confidence Conquer Your Fear in 5 Days Laura’s Social Media: Instagram: Laura's Instagram Facebook: Laura's Facebook page Connect with Chanelle: Chanelle's Instagram Chanelle's Twitter Chanelle's Facebook
Chanelle Price is a 2021 Olympic track and field hopeful competing in the 800 m. She comes on the podcast to discuss growing up in Easton, PA, the values her family instilled in her at a young age, the time she spent training in Phoenix, how she has recovered from multiple injuries, and what’s on tap for the rest of 2020 into 2021.
“You know when you’re not done yet. There were goals I wanted to accomplish, and I knew they were still in me. I just needed to keep going and see what I could do.” In 2015, Rolanda Bell was living the dream. She had graduated from the University of Tennessee, where she was a member of the historic 2009 Women’s 4x1500m relay team alongside Chanelle Price, Phoebe Wright, and Sarah Bowman. Together, they broke the existing Penn Relays, National Collegiate, American, and world records — several of which still stand, 11 years later. She went on to run professionally representing Panama — a lifelong dream. But at the 2015 World Athletics Championship in Beijing, Rolanda was competing in the 3000m steeplechase when she went over the water barrier, and landed face-first on the way down. On this episode, Rolanda, who works in marketing for Hoka One One, talks about falling in love with running, going pro, and getting back up and finishing that race in Beijing. She talks about bouncing back, training with the NorCal Distance Project, and why, even after a career as a professional middle-distance athlete, she felt pressure to run a marathon. (Rolanda runs a 4:38 indoor mile, a 1:16 half marathon, and ran a 2:49 in her marathon debut.) She also talks about her experiences with racism living in New York City. "JJ (Clark) helped me realize: 'You have to let high school go. This is a new chapter. It's a new environment. You're away from home. Your body is changing. There's a lot going on. Everything you achieved in the past four years was amazing.' He didn't want to take that away from me but he said, 'Let's start over.' That's what a lot of high school phenoms do. It's natural. You carry what you've achieved into college but my biggest advice would be to embrace this new chapter and know that it's completely different. Everybody is good. Everybody is a state champ. Find a coach that cares about you more than just a runner and athlete – someone who wants to walk this new journey with you. Because it is going to be a journey and there will be highs and lows. You can't do it alone. You're young and so you need that support from someone older and wiser who is going to be patient with you. There will be breakthroughs but give your body time. I wish I would have known that as 17-year-old Chanelle." Chanelle Price joins the podcast to detail how she's been able to come back among the country's best 800-meter runners. The 2014 World Indoor 800 meter champion but has raced sparingly in recent years since she suffered multiple setbacks in her training including a pulmonary embolism leading to blood clots in her lungs, a battle with mono and a foot fracture. Despite the struggles, she has refused to retire and wants to give the 2021 Olympics a shot. In this episode, we'll run through her career from being a high school star out of Easton, Pennsylvania through her identity crisis and development at Tennessee to her rollercoaster of a professional career. She shares why things are now going well right as a member of the Nike Oregon Track Club and racing amid a global pandemic. She's got tremendous resiliency. Enjoy.
