“It's almost been ten years and for me it was just kind of time. Contract changes, life changes now with having a two-year-old and wanting to grow the family side of things... A lot of factors all came together at the right time for me to make the decision.”My guest for today's episode is Clayton Murphy, who's been part of American middle-distance running history for the better part of a decade and is now officially hanging up his spikes. From the small town of New Madison, Ohio, to the Olympic podium in Rio — Clayton's career is the stuff of dreams. He was the kid from the Mid-American Conference who took down giants. The collegiate star who doubled up at NCAAs. The 21-year-old who kicked his way to Olympic bronze in the 800 meters — running 1:42.93, still the fifth-fastest time by an American in history.Over the years, Clayton's worn the red, white, and blue across the globe — from the Pan Am Games, where he struck gold, to two Olympic Games, multiple U.S. titles, and countless memorable finishes. But it hasn't always been smooth sailing. He's battled injuries, coaching changes, and the highs and lows that come with being one of the best in a brutal event. And now, after a career that spanned over a decade at the professional level — Clayton is here to reflect on what it meant, how he made peace with the decision, and what's next.SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for. "I genuinely told myself that I was born for it. On the start line, I kept saying that to myself. I was like, ‘I was born for this.' It just made me feel like I was totally meant to be there, and as long as I was going to be brave, I would be rewarded." My guest for today's episode is Georgia Bell just a month or so after her first appearance on the show where we detailed her remarkable comeback to the sport. Well…now she's an Olympic bronze medalist in the 1500m. In the Olympic final, she shocked many – not really the CITIUS MAG crew – by running a British record of 3:52.61. She was just 0.05 seconds shy of a silver medal, but her perfectly timed push in the final stretch earned her a place on the podium, overtaking Ethiopia's Diribe Welteji by a mere 0.14 seconds. As Faith Kipyegon claimed her third consecutive title, Bell's remarkable performance capped an unforgettable night for Team GB. If you haven't listened to her first episode go back and do that because this one picks up right where we left off in her season build-up to her first Olympic Games and and how she made history in the race of a lifetime. It's Olympics season, and we have a lot of questions: What motivates Olympic athletes to compete? Why is there such a pay disparity between professional athletes and Olympic athletes, or even the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders? And why do bronze medalists often seem happier than silver medalists? In this episode, we discuss all of this and more, attempting to answer them both from the inner and outer world perspectives.View full show notes here.

At the age of 6, Kim Zmeskal watched her first gymnastics class and was upset that she, “wasn't allowed to play on the playground.” A few years later, training under Bela and Martha Karolyi, Mary Lou Retton came back to their home gym with an Olympic Gold medal showing her early on that any dream was possible. Since then, Kim has become the first American to win the all-around at a World Gymnastics Championships in 1991, 2X Gold medalist in the 1992 World championships, 1992 Olympic Bronze Medalist, 3X US National Champion, 1991 U.S. Olympic Committee's Sportswoman of the Year and the 1991 March of Dimes Athlete of the Year. She is also a 2001 USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame inductee. As an athlete, she worked hard to remove challenges and always strived for perfection. Now as a coach, she is passionate to learn more than she ever thought possible about trust, partnership, and appreciation for her athletes. She leans into the challenges and creates a culture where her athletes dream so big that they can achieve excellence over perfection. @kimzb

"I really, truly, in the bottom of my heart want to keep doing this. But I need to figure out what my 'why' is in a more sustainable way rather than just ‘I want to win another medal because everyone tells me I need to win another medal.'" In 2020, Molly Seidel ran her debut marathon at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon, finished second, and earned a spot on Team USA for the Tokyo Olympics. In 2021, she became an Olympic Bronze Medalist. The next few years included some highs — like running an American course record at the New York City Marathon — and a lot of lows, including injuries and mental health struggles. Last fall, Molly was on the upswing. She ran a personal best at the Chicago Marathon, which felt promising and encouraging heading into the 2024 Olympic Trials Marathon. Then: a shattered kneecap. Molly had to withdraw from the Trials, which was a devastating blow for her and for fans alike. In this unfiltered episode, Molly talks about how she's doing now, and how she's been doing over the past few months. She talks about making her "50K debut," and about why she wishes it weren't a big deal. Plus, a few fun games, drug testing talk, and Molly's message to this year's Team USA marathoners. Throughout his first 16 fights of his career, which he's all won, with an impressive feat of 14 out of 16 of those fights being won by knockout–Tarver quickly became a force to be reckoned with in the boxing world and had so many eyes on him from Florida... All the way to the local boxing hub in Philadelphia. In April of 2003, Tarver was placed in a bout against Montel Griffin, who at the time, was the reigning WBC and IBF light-heavyweight champion. After about a full hour in the ring, 12 rounds and after successfully flooring Griffin in the 1st and 12th rounds of the fight, Antonio was crowned the new champion after a unanimous decision. In May of 2004 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Antonio did something that would surprise many... He was set to do a rematch with Roy Jones Jr where he not only regained the WBC title, but also knocked RJJ out in the 2nd round–Where Jones had only been knocked out once in the then 50-fight entirety of his boxing career. Fast forwarding to 2006 after Antonio had become a household name after defeating Roy Jones, he appeared on the covers of iconic boxing Magazines such as The Ring and KO. He was also given the opportunity to be casted as Mason “The Line” Dixon in the Rocky Balboa installment of the film's franchise that was released the same year. Antonio has since then gone on to be a boxing analyst for Showtime Championship Boxing, a spectator at some of the world's most memorable boxing events and being a co-host on Friday Night Fights. Thank you to Antonio for stopping by the I Am Athlete studio to share his perspective on all things life and giving us insight on his past that built the resilient, brute force of nature that he is. Happy Early Birthday & Happy Scorpio SZN to you as well!

"What I would want to tell that person, but I think would have destroyed that person is, 'You're going to get everything you ever wanted, and it's going to destroy you.'" In 2020, Molly Seidel finished second at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, earning herself a spot on Team USA for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She had no idea what was to come. When the Olympics finally happened, in August 2021, Molly had the race of her life. She finished third, taking a bronze medal back to the U.S. — the first American woman to medal in the Olympic marathon since Deena Kastor in 2004. Then, it was a whirlwind of media, requests, appearances, and fanfare. Molly finished fourth at the 2021 New York City Marathon, breaking Kara Goucher's American course record in the process. All the while, though, behind the smiles at events and during interviews, Molly was struggling with an eating disorder and with her mental health. She went on to drop out of the 2022 Boston Marathon, and to give up her spot on the 2022 World Championships marathon team. In this unflinchingly uncensored conversation, Molly offers an update on how she's doing today. She talks about the past year and a half (more on that here, in conversation with Sarah Lorge Butler), and shares what's next. (Spoiler: The Nagoya Women's Marathon on March 11.) "We want to prepare for the World Championships, run fast before the World Championships to get confidence and then try to win the World Championships." Happy Friday! This is the eighth edition of Track Snacks – a mini-series taking you into the weekend where Chris Chavez and a CITIUS MAG staffer or friend share the story of an athlete who they're excited about right now that you can expect to see compete at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 (July 15–24, 2022). For this episode, we're joined by Brazilian hurdle star Alison Dos Santos after he won the Prefontaine Classic men's 400m hurdle race in a world-leading time of 47.23. Last summer, he was part of one of the greatest races in track and field history – the Olympic 400m hurdle final. Norway's Karsten Warholm made history by becoming the first person to break 46 seconds with his victory (45.95). Rai Benjamin went 46.17 for the second-fastest time in history and the silver medal. Dos Santos rounded out the podium with a 46.72 for the bronze medal. We chatted more with him about how he got his start in track and field because he was competing on big stages as a teenager including winning a bronze medal at the 2018 World U20 Championships. He's earned gold medals at the South American Championships and the PanAmerican Games. His first senior global championship came in 2019 when he finished 7th at the World Championships in Doha – just a quarter of a second away from the bronze medal. I watched Dos Santos during the practice session at Hayward Field. He's six feet, seven inches tall and puts down tremendous force into the ground. While he's fierce and focused on the track, if you catch him anywhere off-the-track, he's always willing to stop and chat, crack some jokes, tell stories and even share a dance. Track Snacks is presented by Hayward Magic. Everyone knows how much all of us in the CITIUS MAG family love track & field, and how much we enjoy sharing that love with you all. Well, we've got a few big love-sharing ideas in the works and it all takes place in Eugene, Oregon this summer. Hayward Field will be the home to the Prefontaine Classic, the USATF Outdoor Championships and the World Athletics Championships. We'll be there and you should be too. Visit https://citiusmag.com/summerofhayward/ for all the information on dates and tickets. Track Snacks is sponsored by @HaywardMagic, the Instagram home for the true track & field diehards, dreamers and fans. Sharing the magic of the sport and elevating the athletes that push it forward.
