Second Nature turns 1 year old on March 22, 2025 and a lot has happened in the outdoor industry during that time. Two specific topics came up this past week, and we wanted to take some time to discuss the impact on the industry: OnlyFans supporting athletes and Outside's latest news cycle. An interesting time for the outdoor industry, to say the least. We celebrated the 250th recording for this great episode! The main topic was a new study on fatigue resistance. How do you actually improve performance after multiple hours of work? It's the greatest mystery of endurance, and whoever solves it will have a big advantage. We think that we have some answers for training, fueling, and the nervous system. And this episode was jam-packed with tons of amazing topics and questions! Other topics: race week reflections before the Big Alta 50k, confidence, showing up authentically for a serious episode 250 discussion, positivity and love in a complex world, fatigue resistance training, OnlyFans sponsors Sabrina Stanley, Nike sponsors Riley Brady, Outside Mag's revolt, and more. This one got deep and personal, like we also get with our treadmill.Thank you so much for your support over 250 episodes. We had Sabrina Stanley on the podcast two years ago. What stands out most is her confidence and drive. She has won some of the most difficult 100 milers including the Hurt 100 and Hardrock 100 twice. Ultrarunner magazine has named Sabrina one of the top ultra runner's multiple times. Another great conversation with one of our favorites. On this episode we talk about what the last two years have been like for Sabrina. The heartbreak of preparing for a big event and not being able to compete due to Covid followed by a tough DNF. We discuss the physical and mental work it takes to overcome setbacks; Sabrina is very open and honest about mental health. We appreciate this conversation and hope it helps others. Sabrina is a strong woman with a positive message for all of us trying to do hard things. IG - @sabrinaleannstanley

-- cover photo: UTMB WORLD -- Buckled: www | Instagram | Facebook | YouTube | Patreon | Shop Alessandro: Instagram | Facebook | Strava | www Marcello: Instagram --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/buckled/message
Today's podcast interview is with one my the most amazing individuals I have ever crossed paths with, Sabrina Stanley. Sabrina is a professional ultrarunner for Adidas Terrex, and she specializes in mountainous, 100-mile races. She is the only American (male or female) to win Grand Raid the world's largest 100-mile race, revered as the toughest 100-miler in the world.Sabrina has won 14 of the last 15 ultras she's run, and she holds the FKT (fastest known time) for Nolan's 14- a 100-mile trail that includes summiting 14, 14,000 mile peaks. What's more impressive is that she set that FKT, then was beat by someone else about a month later, so she did ANOTHER attempt after 58 days, reclaiming her title.Sabrina and I worked together many years ago. She was a manager at the restaurant I worked at, and she left that job to take a minimum wage job in Colorado to pursue her passion in the life she wanted to create.I've been following her for years, and her mindset and determination have always been something that has inspired me to be better. Something she says a lot is that if there's a single other person who has accomplished what she wants to accomplish, she can too. When we got into the nitty-gritty of mindset, I wasn't surprised to hear that she takes all of it in micro-steps, from Day 1. "What can I do today?"When she was talking about developing a strategy, she mentioned finding people who do what you want to do, and then asking yourself questions about them down to the small details; questions like "what do they eat for breakfast?"Sabrina and I talked a lot about the mental game of being an athlete because everyone often is so focused on the physical. The physical is hard, but the mind has to go first. You have to not only believe you are capable but also, do the internal work to allow yourself to believe you are worthy and receive. ✨If you think something isn't for you, that's the mind, not the body. You can accomplish anything through hard work and beliefs. That shift also happens today, on Day 1. You can't look a million steps ahead and make it-- there would be too much inadequacy internally. You look at the steps you can take TODAY.A lot of us think that things aren't for us, and we attach a "story" as to WHY they aren't.Our work is to rise above that.Along those lines, we also talked about mental health, how a negative mindset affects the body, and the stress we place on ourselves when we create an internal reality that doesn't serve us. Sabrina talks about reaching out for help, and acknowledging that everyone does need it from time to time.We also talk about female empowerment, and how we can achieve goals that are larger than life… However, we absolutely must do the brain work, believe in ourselves, and take action every day to move forward.I hope you enjoy every bit of this interview. Talking with Sabrina was a true joy.You can find Sabrina on Instagram @sabrinaleannstanley or on her website: https://sabrinastanley.com/

Sabrina Stanley has held the title of first place female finisher of the Hardrock 100 for 4 years. She won in 2018 and 2021, and the race was cancelled in 2019 & 2020. She ran while in school to stay in shape for team sports. Then a friend convinced her to do a half marathon and that led to her running road marathons.A friend suggested she read Lore of Running, and when she read it she learned about trail running. The author talked a lot about the Leadville 100. She was 22 when she read this book, and said that by the time she was 40 she was going to run the Leadville 100. She put her name in the lottery for Leadville and thought it was going to take years to get into the race. But her name was drawn that first year. Her first attempt at Leadville was a DNF. But she came back strong and now is a professional ultramarathon runner.

Running is what drives me. I crave it. I've followed some paths in life that have led me away from my passion, but when I finally returned to what always made me happy, I appreciated it so much more. Sabrina is a professional mountain Ultra-Runner and RRCA Certified Coach. Growing up in Washington State Sabrina's parents fostered an unbridled competitive spirit in both her and her five siblings. Sabrina eventually found a love of running which morphed into a passion for trail running. After being forced to drop at mile 87 of the 2015 Leadville Trail 100 her competitive nature kicked in. She vowed to never drop a race again and become one of the best ultra-runners in the world. In 2016 she returned to Leadville with a vengeance and finished 4th. Since then, Sabrina has won some of the most difficult 100 milers, in 2018 she won the Hardrock 100, in 2019 she won HURT 100. In July of 2021 Sabrina won the Hardrock 100 again and shaved over 3 hours off her 2018 time. Ultrarunner magazine named Sabrina as 8th best American female in 2018 and in 2019 she was ranked 5th. Currently she has finished first female in the last 11 ultras she competed in. Absolutely loved this conversation with Sabrina. She is one of the most confident, focused, driven runners we have talked to. There is so much more to Sabrina. On this episode she tells us about the things and people that helped shape her into the athlete she has become. We dive into her one and only DNF and how significant that one event became to her running future. We talk about goals and success and everything that comes along with it. Avery Collins and Sabrina Stanley are the power couple of ultra running for a reason - and not just because the name is catchy and helpful when promoting their coaching business - Power Couple Coaching. Their accomplishments in ultra running are legit. Since his rookie season in 2012, Avery has dedicated his life to being the top runner in his sport. In 2017, he won every race he entered, including the Georgia Death Race, Quest for the Crest 50k, Hahn's Peak Hill Climb, Continental Divide Trail Run 50k, and Grindstone 100 Miler and finished 6th at Western States. In 2019, Avery set a course record at Quest for the Crest 50k, he won the Fatdog 120-miler, and finished 3rd at Trail de Bourbon as the highest placing American male ever). Ultrarunner Magazine named Sabrina the 8th best American Female in 2018 and ranked her 5th in 2019. She's finished first female at the last 11-ultras she's entered. In 2018, Sabrina won Hardrock 100. The following year, she won HURT 100 and recently became the first American (male or female) to win Diagonal Des Fous. It will become obvious early in this interview that Sabrina won't be happy until she's ranked number 1, and we don't doubt her for a second. In this episode, we talk to Sabrina and Avery about their goals to be the top ultra runners in the world. The couple recalls the horrific car crash that left Avery unable to race for six months, his painful rehab and struggle with the possibility that he might never run again. Sabrina shares her mental approach to the sport and striving to be the best and the ultra running community frowning upon runners who outwardly express a desire to win every time they step foot on a trail. And finally, we talk about weed. I mean, there's a reason Avery's Instagram handle is @runninghigh. Avery shares his thoughts on cannabis and its use for running, training, and recovery. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/werunthis/support
Melissa is back on the show and it is a delight hear about what she has been able to do over the past year. Like so many of us, her professional and personal life was thrown upside down. Melissa is a woman of many talents, and just as many jobs, and having to re-work them into the new paradigm was a significant challenge. Even with all of that on her plate she still managed to keep running. At first her miles were for mental and emotional preservation. Then they slowly returned to marathon building workouts. After months of slowly building she decided to enter the McKirdy Micro Marathon in South Carolina. What happened next was a shock that she could not have predicted a year earlier. In this two part episode we meet Kevin Duffy and speak with Sarah Lorge Butler about her recent article for Runner's World entitled Why Aren't More Female Coaches in Charge of Pro Teams? Kevin is Fireman in Yonkers, NY, 5 x Ironman, 50 miler finisher, plant-based athlete and cook. Here's a intro to Kevin in his own words: "For most of my life I ate the standard American diet. This typical days, weeks and years full of meat, cow’s milk, eggs, cheese, sugary cereals, too much pizza (like 3 days a week too much) and processed junk food. I live this way for 33 years. It wasn’t until 2015, when I learned what plant-based meant and decided to give it a try. I switched over to a lifestyle and a daily routine that is rich in fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains. These are the sources of energy that the earth has provided. Everything I eat started as a seed. I've lost a total of 40 lbs. and my workouts are more effective because of an increase in energy and stamina. I also sleep more soundly because my body is not loaded with toxins and doesn’t have to expend energy tossing and turning throughout the night trying to figure out how to process those old harmful toxins, when all it wants to do is rest. I noticed that I recover quicker from workouts, therefore I can train more often. This resulted in me racing faster and improving my performance in all sports and activities. The benefits to this lifestyle change seem endless. I am constantly learning and trying to better the person from yesterday. Life is more enjoyable when you feel better. We weren’t put on this earth to get fat, sick, achy and slow, so don’t settle for that." In the second part of the episode I speak with Sarah Lorge Butler from Runner's World (54:40 mark). Sabrina Stanley is a trail and ultra runner who lives and trains in Silverton, CO. Sabrina’s resume includes a win at HURT 100, Grand Raid La Reunion, and Hardrock as well as an F3 finish at Western States. While Sabrina’s wins are impressive what really makes her glow is her drive, determination, and focus. Sabrina sets big goals and does the work to make them a reality. In Volume 1 of Eat Clean, Run Dirty Magazine Sabrina writes an article titled How to Coach Yourself. When I first approached Sabrina about writing an article I asked her about tips on choosing a coach and finding a good fit. Sabrina herself has coached many runners alongside her partner Avery Collins through their Power Couples Coaching. It was so refreshing to have Sabrina say that folks do not need a coach at all, With a little planning anyone can map out a successful training plan for their next big race. In a beautiful and comprehensive feature article in Eat Clean, Run Dirty Magazine, she shows us all how to do just that. To accompany this fantastic article we’ve recruiting Colorado’s Jordan Chapell and his photo series from one of my personal bucket list races, The High Lonesome 100. Jordan captures the rugged and sweeping landscapes in a way that the viewer can feel the grandeur of the course and the incredible difficulty in navigating it. The images are captivating and inspired. In today’s podcast, I sit down to chat with Jordan and Sabrina to do a deep dive on the How To Coach Yourself article. I am your host, Jessica Vandenbush, and this is the Eat Clean Run Dirty Podcast.
It is a widely held belief that runners get slower with age. Ingrid Walters, an actress and elite masters runner, has turned that belief on its head. At the age of 47 Ingrid won the female open division of the Los Angeles Marathon in a scorching fast 2:48 - 22 minutes faster than her first marathon nearly a decade earlier. Shortly after that race, as she was preparing for Grandma's Marathon, Ingrid was diagnosed with breast cancer. She attacked this new challenge with vigor and focus. After undergoing a double mastectomy, she continued to run while undergoing six rounds of chemotherapy as well as radiation. Many weeks she even ran between 50-70 miles, the to amazement of her attending physicians. In addition to running, Ingrid has a passion for acting. She’s done over 40 national commercials, numerous television shows and films. We talk about all of this in this episode as well as her high level swimming background, and her hope to be an example for others who are facing similar challenges in the sport or with cancer that she has faced. For Mariana Maldonado, 2020 was a year of amazing improvements in fitness with no races to test them. Several of her marathons were postponed and cancelled throughout the yeas as she continually altered her training and remained optimistic. It was a learning experience that she is hoping to capitalize on in 2021. As Mari continued to improve, she started to reach whole new levels of speed and fitness. As exciting as this was, it became hard for her to embrace those new levels. In this episode we dive into matching her confidence with her fitness, juggling an ever-changing schedule, and how she is planning on taking the next step in 2021. So many runners are passionate about their running while also working hard to advocate for a cause/mission they believe in. When we combine these two passions to help raise awareness and philanthropic support it can be a remarkable experience. It can also change how we connect to our running. No one knows this better than Jordan Marie Daniel. Jordan Marie Brings Three White Horses Daniel – Kul Wičasa Lakota, a citizen of Kul Wicasa Oyate (Lower Brule Sioux Tribe) as well as a passionate and devoted advocate for Indian Country and all people. Nationally known for her advocacy and grassroots organization for anti-pipelines/climate justice efforts, change the name/not your mascot, the epidemic and crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women (MMIW), and native youth initiatives. Now, she is continuing this running journey and advocacy, as a professional runner with Altra Team Elite. In 2020, with road races all over being cancelled, many runners decided to transition to trail running where races were much more prevalent and easier to align with COVID restrictions. But many of these folks weren't quite sure where to start. This is exactly why I was excited to speak with elite coach and podcast host Mario Fraioli. Mario coaches some of the best trail runners in the country in addition to making this same transition when he moved to the Bay Area. In this conversation Mario covers gear, volume, intensity, strength and athleticism, hills, and so much more. If you want to learn more about Mario head over to https://mariofraioli.com/. While I have been chronicling my own Mastering 40 journey, I was excited to talk with Brian White who has been actively pursuing his own. Brian, who turned 40 last spring, has big goals for the marathon, 10k, and un-broken pull-ups. So far he is crushing it but don't let that fool you - he hasn't always been a runner extraordinaire. He was big into lifting for years before starting running in his late 30's. Now, Brian is on the cusp of doing amazing things and It was a pleasure to hear him talk all about it. Sabrina is a professional ultra-distance runner, run coach, and all-around badass. As with a lot of runners in the time of COVID, the virus really threw a wrench in her race plans for this year. But Sabrina was flexible and instead of dwelling on that, she was able to pivot and focus her attention on a big objective she had been eyeing for a while: a classic Colorado route called Nolan’s 14. Sabrina got to know this route really well, to say the least. This episode is full of little nuggets of ultra-running wisdom as Sabrina recounts her experiences on Nolan’s 14.
