Welcome back to the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast.Today's episode is with someone who is running the long race — in investing and in running. We sit down with prolific long distance runner, Blue Owl Capital's Ivan Zinn, who has been a pioneer in alternative credit and asset-based finance.Ivan has had a long career in private credit. He started at DLJ before joining Leonard Green & Partners and Highbridge Capital. He then joined HBK before founding pioneering private credit firm Atalaya Capital Management, where he was also the CIO. Ivan and team grew Atalaya to over $10B in AUM from 2006 to 2024 before being acquired by Blue Owl Capital for $450M (and $800M with earnouts). As part of the transaction, Ivan became Managing Director at Blue Owl and is the Head of Alternative Credit, where the firm is now expanding its footprint due to Atalaya's expertise. Ivan is as prolific outside of the office as he is in it — he is a long distance runner, running 100 mile races, and was a NCAA All-American tennis player, which comes as no surprise given the discipline, focus and expertise required to excel at the activities he's done throughout his career in work and sport. He's also a Board member of the USTA Foundation.Ivan and I had a fascinating conversation about the evolution of private credit and the growth of asset-based finance. We discussed:How and why ABF has grown within the private credit ecosystem.ABF's market structure and a “trip down main street.”The potential size of the ABF market. Why moving assets off bank balance sheets can help the financial system. Why private credit is a data rich asset.Where ABF fits in a portfolio. Why consumer credit is potentially misunderstood within private credit. Thanks Ivan for coming on the show to share your wisdom and expertise on private credit and ABF. Good luck to anyone keeping up with you on a long run though! You can also see a recent Q&A with Ivan about private credit and ABF on AGM here.Subscribe to Alt Goes Mainstream to receive the weekly newsletter every Sunday and all of AGM's podcasts.A word from AGM podcast sponsor, Ultimus Fund SolutionsThis episode of Alt Goes Mainstream is brought to you by Ultimus Fund Solutions, a leading full-service fund administrator for asset managers in private and public markets. Back in 2015, Denver voted to extend tourism taxes to pay for the expansion of the National Western Center in order to keep the Stock Show from leaving town. But earlier this month, City Council twice delayed a vote that would release $800 million of that money. They were listening to pushback from community members who say they want the National Western Center Authority to commit $16 million to help mitigate displacement and gentrification. The Authority says they've already offered plenty of community benefits. So ahead of council's final deliberation on the issue on Monday, host Bree Davies is sitting down with both sides — first, Steve Nalley is chief real estate officer of the National Western Center and second, Alfonso Espino from the GES Community Investment Fund.   Head-ON with Roxanne Kincaid – May 7, 2025 On this edition of Head-ON with Roxanne Kincaid, Roxanne delivers three fierce hours of truth-telling, political critique, and sharp-tongued humor from a proudly liberal, Appalachian transbilly perspective. Broadcasting live amid a personal health scare and ongoing fundraising efforts, she pulls no punches while skewering what she repeatedly calls the “Nitwit Nero,” “Orange Julius Geezer,” and MAGAT administration. Main topics include: Authoritarianism & Abuse of Power: Roxanne tears into the administration's deportation plans to countries like Libya and Rwanda, calling them a “slave trade” enabled by Pentagon funds and blatant human rights violations. She highlights federal judges pushing back against misuse of the Alien Enemies Act, particularly rulings from Judges Sweeney, Rodriguez, and Murphy. Religious Grift & Hypocrisy: With fire aimed at “Christian grifters” like Jim Bakker, Roxanne slams the prosperity gospel as a con. Bakker's demand for $1,000 donations, while his ministry faces foreclosure, exemplifies the cynical monetization of faith. Religious bigotry and antisemitism, especially targeting Jewish politicians like Gov. JB Pritzker, are called out directly. Sanctuary Cities & Counter-Trolling: The administration's war on sanctuary cities gets spotlighted during a visit by “Secretary HotMama” to Illinois, met with brilliant shade from Pritzker's team. The trolling press release earns Roxanne's praise for mocking cosplay law enforcement antics and dodgy constitutional respect. Attacks on LGBTQ+ Health: The MAGAT administration's cancellation of $800M+ in LGBTQ+ health research—including HIV prevention—is called a cruel erasure of queer communities from public health priorities. SNAP Restrictions in Louisiana: Gov. Jeff Landry's ban on buying candy or soda with food stamps, part of his “Make America Healthy Again” campaign, is framed as a thinly veiled assault on the poor, diabetics, and public dignity. World Cup Chaos Ahead: With mega-events looming, Roxanne calls out the US's crumbling infrastructure and visa backlogs, warning that MAGAT mismanagement could embarrass the nation on the world stage. Spying on Allies: A Wall Street Journal exposé alleging US intel is spying on Greenland and Denmark stirs outrage. Denmark's Foreign Minister calls it a betrayal; Roxanne sees it as more MAGAT overreach in pursuit of imperial fantasies. Media & Democratic Infighting: Roxanne roasts millionaire pundits and centrist Dems who bash Biden while ignoring MAGAT extremism. In her view, limousine liberals and profit-hungry networks are fueling division. Judicial Win in NC: There's a glimmer of hope as right-wing Judge Jefferson Griffin drops a bid to toss overseas ballots, clearing the way for Justice Allison Riggs' certified victory. Roxanne hails it as democracy fighting back. Additional highlights: Roxanne prepares for a CT scan in Durham and may launch a GoFundMe. The show faces a $968 fundraising gap and depends on listener support. A racist woman in Minnesota raises money on GiveSendGo—proof, Roxanne says, that hate still sells in MAGAT America. Pritzker signs an executive order protecting autism-related data. A 1972 Soviet satellite is falling back to Earth (location unknown). The Trump admin allegedly dismantled a key CDC infection control committee. Rumors swirl about MAGAT Surgeon General pick Casey Mean, a “wellness influencer.” Tone: Blunt, biting, and unfiltered, with moments of gallows humor and sharp satire. Roxanne blends grassroots outrage with deep concern for democracy, human rights, and community. Her message: resist the fascism, expose the grifters, support the truth.

$800M Acquisition Offer for MyProtein Rejected! | THG (The Hut Group) 2025 Q1 Update

If you're going to come at the “king of the online sports nutrition market,” you better not miss! THG (aka the company formerly known as The Hut Group) recently updated the public markets by releasing its 2025 Q1 trading statement. I'll be utilizing that financial information, along with notes I took listening to the earnings conference call, and any relevant publicly disclosed information to obviously update you on the recent performance of THG Nutrition division that includes the world's largest online sports nutrition brand MyProtein, but also utilize everything to provide insights surrounding the global supplement markets. For those unaware, after the THG Ingenuity demerger...THG would now be described as a global, cash generative, health and wellness consumer brands group. During the first quarter of 2025, divisional revenue for THG Nutrition was approximately $196 million, which was basically flat YoY. And while those aren't necessarily great results…THG leadership noted that the segment saw month-on-month sales improvement throughout the quarter. Moreover, momentum was said to be demonstrated in categories outside of the core protein range, especially in activewear, vitamins, bars, and snacks. But I'll dive into several strategic decisions impacting MyProtein including: its global digital sales channel strategy, retail partnerships in physical retail, global "in real life" community events (i.e. HYROX and MyProtein Move Club) and let's just say A LOT is riding on the success of the MyProtein global rebrand. But basically 18 months after the start of its initial staggered market rollout, the transitionary impacts from the rebrand are now behind Myprotein. THG leadership reaffirmed that customer feedback continues to be promising, with unaided brand recognition for MyProtein now at its highest level to date. More importantly though…THG Nutrition leadership needs to pay close attention to key commercial metrics over the next year because to continue moving upstream in positioning (and unlocking sales channel diversification opportunities within the U.S. market) it needs to ensure this rebranding decision is well received by and generates brand affinity with those less price-sensitive customers. Interestingly, THG leadership noted that MyVitamins, which makes up around 9% of the total THG Nutrition online revenue, delivered record quarterly growth. But what's maybe most intriguing is how different the customer demographics of MyVitamins are compared to MyProtein…and its possible synergistic value with the other THG branded products segment THG Beauty. Finally, about a week prior to this earnings release, the board of directors at THG rejected an unsolicited proposal to acquire Myprotein. According to reports, THG turned down the (upwards of $800 million) offer from Selkirk, an investment vehicle, saying it “fundamentally undervalued” the MyProtein business. Additionally, the deal structure carried significant execution complexity and risks...but maybe the most interesting element was that Selkirk is run by a former THG board member and backed by Kelso Group, an activist investor in THG.

Interview with Jeff Quartermaine, Managing Direcotr & CEO of Perseus Mining Ltd.Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/perseus-mining-asxpru-gold-operations-deliver-22-profit-growth-6748Recording date: 29th April 2025Perseus Mining Limited (ASX/TSX: PRU) has emerged as one of Africa's most compelling gold investment opportunities, demonstrating exceptional financial strength and a clear growth trajectory. With its March 2025 quarter results revealing cash and bullion reserves of US$801 million, zero debt, and an additional US$300 million in undrawn credit facilities, Perseus stands on remarkably solid financial footing among mid-tier gold producers. The company's operational excellence continues to impress, with quarterly production of 121,605 ounces at a competitive all-in site cost (AISC) of US$1,209 per ounce. This efficiency, combined with strong gold prices averaging US$2,462 per ounce during the quarter, has generated substantial cash margins of US$1,253 per ounce and a notional operating cashflow of US$152 million. Such robust margins highlight Perseus's ability to maximize value from its existing asset base. Most significantly, Perseus has now taken the Final Investment Decision to develop the Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. This strategic expansion represents a US$523 million investment to develop a large-scale, wholly open-pit operation expected to produce first gold in Q1 2027. Over its initial 11-year mine life, Nyanzaga is projected to produce 2.01 million ounces of gold, with production averaging over 200,000 ounces annually from FY28 to FY35 and peaking at 246,000 ounces. The project's strong economics are reflected in its pre-tax NPV10% of US$404 million and IRR of 26%, figures that improve dramatically at higher gold prices.Complementing the Nyanzaga development is Perseus's commitment to the CMA Underground project at its flagship Yaouré operation in Côte d'Ivoire. This development will make history as Côte d'Ivoire's first mechanized underground mine while extending Yaouré's operational life until at least 2035. With Byrnecut appointed as the specialized underground mining contractor and mobilization already underway, the project is advancing rapidly toward portal development in July 2025.Despite these significant capital commitments, Perseus continues to prioritize shareholder returns through its ongoing A$100 million share buyback program, which was approximately 33% complete at quarter-end. This balanced approach to capital allocation demonstrates management's commitment to creating both immediate and long-term value for investors.Perseus Mining has clearly positioned itself for sustainable growth beyond this decade. CEO Jeff Quartermaine's strategy of building "a sustainable, geopolitically diversified but African-focused gold business involving 3-4 operating mines that produce between 500-600koz of gold per annum" is now coming to fruition. With its exceptional financial position, strong operational performance, and two major growth projects underway, Perseus offers investors exposure to a well-managed gold producer with significant upside potential in a favorable gold price environment.—View Perseus Mining's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/perseus-miningSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

That's why World Tree's innovative approach to carbon capture through a remarkable natural technology, the Empress Splendor tree, stands out.Doug Willmore, CEO of World Tree, explained on today's episode how their model leverages the fastest growing hardwood tree in the world to address climate change while creating real economic opportunities. "World Tree represents the most complex, technologically advanced carbon capture system on the planet, and it's called a tree," Doug said. "It's the fastest growing hardwood tree in the world... and will have a 60-foot tall tree within eight to ten years."What sets World Tree apart is not only the speed and effectiveness of its tree-based carbon capture, but also the company's commitment to sustainable, long-term impact. When harvested, the Empress Splendor trees regrow from the stump, offering five harvests from a single planting. The lumber is used to create high-value products like musical instruments and furniture, locking away carbon for generations. In addition to their environmental impact, World Tree is making waves in the investment world. The company is currently raising capital through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign, allowing individual investors to participate directly in their annual "vintages" of tree plantings. Doug noted, "Little old World Tree has partnered with now 370 small farmers and 1,500 small investors over these nine years. The value of the assets that we have planted: more than $300 million."The EcoTree program offers a triple-bottom-line impact: profits for farmers, returns for investors, and massive climate benefits for the planet. "We call it putting your money where your heart is," Doug shared.Investors can participate in World Tree's EcoTree program by visiting ecotreeprogram.com. It offers a powerful opportunity to align investments with values while potentially earning attractive returns.Today's episode showcases how climate solutions can be tangible, accessible, and profitable, thanks to innovative models like World Tree.tl;dr:World Tree uses the Empress Splendor tree to capture carbon and create valuable long-lasting products.CEO Doug Willmore shares how World Tree partners with small farmers and investors for mutual benefit.World Tree is raising capital through regulated crowdfunding, offering individuals a way to invest in climate solutions.Doug identifies his superpower as "love," applying trust, passion and positivity in leadership and business.Doug encourages embracing love, possibility and trust to build more impactful and fulfilling professional relationships. How to Develop Love As a SuperpowerDoug Willmore defines his superpower as "love." He explained in today's episode that love is "the most underused word in business" and emphasized its importance not just in ideas but in people, partnerships and daily work. Doug shared, "Love shows up when you dwell on possibility... it's love of people, love of the things you get to wake up and do every day." He noted that truly loving your goals and the work you do ensures the resilience needed to weather difficult times.Doug illustrated this superpower with the story of how he joined World Tree. After a successful career in healthcare and public service, Doug was drawn back into the private sector by his passion for fighting climate change. When he met Wendy Burton, World Tree's founder, they "fell in love" — not romantically, but with each other's vision and mission. Doug emphasized that their shared love for the idea of scaling a nature-based climate solution became the foundation for building a thriving organization that now manages over $300 million worth of trees.Doug offered actionable tips for developing love as a strength:Look for reasons to say "yes" rather than "no" in business decisions.Dwell on possibility instead of focusing immediately on barriers.Choose to trust people and give them opportunities to succeed.Stay connected to the passion behind your goals to maintain motivation.Avoid letting money-driven decisions crowd out purpose and heart.By following Doug's example and advice, you can make love a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. When Kevin McCray sold his namesake brand, Kevin's Natural Foods, to Mars, Inc. for a staggering $800 million, it wasn't just a milestone – it was the culmination of a business philosophy built on three simple words: humble and hungry. Now, with the launch of Wild Fox Foods, those same principles form the core of his new, better-for-you snack consumer brand. Kevin's entrepreneurial journey began in 2012 with Chef's Menu, a meal kit company that laid the foundation for what would later become Kevin's Natural Foods – a pioneering brand offering clean, convenient, and nutritious refrigerated and frozen meals. Fast-forward to today, and Kevin's Natural Foods is a household name, stocked in over 20,000 retail locations across Target, Whole Foods, CVS, Publix, Walmart, and more. In 2023, Mars acquired the brand, keeping it as a standalone business within its Food & Nutrition unit. But Kevin wasn't done. Last month, he made a bold return to CPG with Wild Fox Foods, a brand that reimagines trail mixes, roasted nuts, and clean protein bars, offering consumers better-for-you alternatives without sacrificing flavor.   In this episode, Kevin shares his playbook for building Wild Fox Foods using the tenets responsible for the success of Kevin's Natural Foods. He breaks down what it takes to solve real consumer problems, the power of efficient, low-cost consumer research, and why founders should focus on building a strong brand before seeking funding. He also reveals how preparation, persistence, and openness to feedback are critical for any CPG entrepreneur looking to disrupt the market. Show notes: 0:25: Interview: Kevin McCray, Co-Founder, Kevin's Natural Foods & Wild Fox – On location at Expo West 2025, Kevin discusses the creative process behind Wild Fox's brand name, including a humorous alternative, and the challenges of the snacking industry. He explains what inspired him to re-enter the food industry, particularly after a remarkable exit with Kevin's Natural Foods and why alternatives to legacy brands must be built on quality ingredients and taste. He emphasizes the importance of retailer relationships, product offerings, and partnerships in getting a brand on the shelf, along with balancing short-term consumer feedback and long-term goals for success. Kevin also shares insights on the financial side of launching a food brand, advocating for efficient research and reflects on the role of luck and hard work in his success. Josh finished fourth in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 800m with a time of 1:44.12. Josh went to Bishop Shanahan High School in Pennsylvania, where he set a U.S. high school national record in the 800m as a senior with a time of 1:47.67.Josh has experienced a lot in his time as a competitive runner, having worked with six coaches over six years. “Some of what this journey has been about is just the relentless pursuit of excellence through this gift. I really have made that my mission this year and I hope I can do that for people.”My guest for today's episode is Josh Hoey – one of the most compelling comeback stories in American distance running right now. At just 18 years old, Josh made headlines by turning pro straight out of high school, signing with Adidas after setting the national high school indoor 800m record. But instead of a smooth trajectory to stardom, the years that followed were filled with coaching changes, setbacks, and hard lessons about what it truly takes to succeed at the highest level. Now at 25 years old, Josh is having the season of his life. In just the past month, he broke the American indoor 800m record twice, first at the Millrose Games and then again at the U.S. Indoor Championships this past weekend, where he ran 1:43.24. It's a world leading time and the second-fastest indoor 800m time in history. The win also secured him his first Team USA berth for the upcoming World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China. In this episode, Josh opens up about his rollercoaster journey from the struggles of turning pro at such a young age to finding stability with his coach Justin Rinaldi and a training system that finally clicked for him. We talk about the mental shifts, training breakthroughs, and the faith that has carried him through it all. And finally, what his hopes and expectations are as he gets ready for World Indoors.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Guest: Josh Hoey | @joshhoey21 on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. On today's show, we have a lot to talk about. Josh Hoey just ran 1:43.24 for 800 meters—indoors. That's the second-fastest time ever run indoors, behind only Wilson Kipketer. We'll break down what this means for the American 800m scene, how he's addressed skepticism that inevitably comes with a performance like this and whether Hoey is suddenly a legitimate outdoor medal contender.Hobbs Kessler doubled at USAs, taking both the 3000m and 1500m titles like it was just another weekend at the track. We'll talk about what impressed us the most about Kessler's double, how the men's middle distances are shaping up for 2025 and why it was OK for Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker to skip out.And then there's the "rivalry" that was quickly dispelled by the athletes – Nikki Hiltz vs. Shelby Houlihan. Just a few years ago, Houlihan was untouchable. Then came the four-year ban, and now, she's back—and already battling for the top spot. In the 3000m, Houlihan got to the front, squeezed the pace, and dared anyone to come with her. And Nikki Hiltz? They came with her. And then passed her. In the final strides of the women's 3000m, Hiltz outkicked Houlihan, officially stamping themselves as America's best championship racer in the middle distances.Plus, we'll get into the results of the sprints and why the 2025 World Indoor Championships in Nanjing might be one of the weirdest global meets we've ever seen—between withdrawals, travel logistics, and a US team that's missing some of its biggest stars.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. Sheldon Kimber says the grid is broken — at least for new data centers and other large, industrial loads that need lots of clean power, fast.  But the founder and CEO of Intersect Power believes there's a workaround that enables larger data centers and speeds up time to power: colocating behind-the-meter generation and storage on megasites rich with renewable resources.  In short, instead of bringing clean generation to load, bring load to clean generation. Major partners are on board with the strategy. Last December Intersect announced $800M in investment from Google and private equity firm TPG, along with a goal of catalyzing $20B in projects by 2030. So how does colocation work? And how far does it go? In this episode, Shayle talks to Sheldon about how colocation can help sidestep the challenges associated with grid upgrades, transmission, and permitting. They dig into topics like: Major forces shaping the market, like AI demand, the IRA, and tariffs Optimal PPA prices and tenures The right mix of grid-connected and behind-the-meter power The extreme version of colocation: off-grid data centers Megasite developers for hydrogen and crypto and how they took advantage of the AI boom Whether DeepSeek will cause energy demand to temper or accelerate Recommended resources Latitude Media: Google's new data center model signals a massive market shift Latitude Media: Load growth is changing how Silicon Ranch develops solar projects Latitude Media: Amazon's data center strategy: ‘Get back to being grid-tied' Catalyst: The US power demand surge: The electricity gauntlet has arrived Credits: Hosted by Shayle Kann. Like I said, I'm a graceful loser. But I'm training and I'm doing the work to make sure that if I'm ever in that position again – we'll see!” My guest for today's episode is Shafiqua Maloney, a name that maybe most track and field fans don't know, but should. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she made history as the first athlete from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to reach an Olympic final and finish fourth in the women's 800m, but her journey to that starting line was anything but easy. Yet through it all, she never gave up. With the unwavering support of her mother, her coach, and her faith, she found a way to persevere and it all came together in Paris where she ran 1:57 on the biggest stage in the sport.
