This podcast is for women who want to keep God at the center of their marriage, their role as a mom, and while making a difference in the lives of others.
As a sophomore in high school, I decided to join the cross country team because I didn't have to try out! Rejection was more than I could handle during the first year of being at a boarding school that was two states away from my family. I thought I was going to die during my first few practices but by God's grace, I eventually improved and ended up thoroughly enjoying running long distance.Track, on the other hand, wasn't in my wheelhouse. (You'll have to listen to today's episode to know why.) That's why I tip my hat to amazing runners like Chanelle Price. This is a woman who began running in her childhood and never gave up on her dream of competing professionally. In fact, Chanelle is preparing to compete this week in the 2021 Olympic Trials so she can qualify to represent the United States in Japan. What I love about Chanelle is her honesty and transparency and I believe you will, too. Her authenticity is inspiring and gives hope to so many of us who struggle with remembering where our value lies as well as who we really are.In this week's season finale, Chanelle shares with us:why she began running competitively, how she found God in one of her lowest moments, how God worked to debunk a myth about Christianity in her life, how God can use our gifts and story for His glory, and more!Scripture ReferencesI planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. When I was a little girl, my love for words and stories began through trips to our local and school libraries. When my mom was at a hair salon, sometimes, I'd even hit the jackpot and find a book left behind that I could read. I also loved Sunday School and how my teachers shared Bible stories with my peers and me.Stories have the power to make you feel less lonely and more understood. They can take you to galaxies far away or give you hard truths from your favorite motivational figure.Editor and Writing Coach, Beth Crosby, knows how powerful storytelling is, too. I didn't grow up hearing much about adoption. Honestly, I can only pinpoint one time I did as a young girl. That's when my dad (I never call him 'step dad') and mom brought it up briefly. As I got older, I saw the commercials about sending money monthly to help take care of children in parts of the globe I'd never heard of before. Then, about 5 years ago, my family started attending the church where we currently worship. There are so many families in our congregation who have chosen to adopt children. Being around these families has truly opened up my eyes to the necessity of finding stable and loving families for not only babies but older children who all too often get overlooked. In today's episode, Monique shares with us:why she and her husband wanted to adopt, what stops many of us from taking action, why creating margin is so necessary, where our value comes from, how you can honor God and still serve others outside your home, why mamas must prioritize self-care, and more!QUOTES (from Monique)"Adoption is truly a gift from God.""Find joy in the mundane.""If you are filled with confidence of who God says you are, it doesn't matter what everyone else says.""It's okay to say 'no'."BIBLE REFERENCESBut if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. - 1 Timothy 5:8 ESVBut if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Setting boundaries is so important. One reason is that it helps protect our mental health. When we allow ourselves to be slaves to the lack mentality or hustle culture, we open the doors for stress, fear, and a host of other issues to run amuck in our lives. God didn't call us to live overwhelmed, chaotic lives. In Him, we can find rest and peace--even as entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship may look glamourous but trust me, many entrepreneurs will let you know all that glitters ain't gold! Entrepreneurship takes a lot of intentional, strategic work--especially if you're a mom who is also working in corporate America. This week's guest, Loren Chestnut of Captivating Calligraphy, shares with us how she's able to use a skill that brings joy to others and herself without putting her family on the backburner. If you've had a desire to start a business or turn a hobby into one but you're afraid you can't do that while being a mom, then pull up a chair with your notebook in hand. You don't want to miss this episode!Loren shares with us:the importance of having time with your hubs but also for yourself, why trimming down your service offers is one of the best things you can do for your business, why balance shouldn't be our focus, how to know if entrepreneurship is for you, and more!QUOTES“Balance means all things are equal but that’s not true. You keep God in the center and everything else floats around in place.” - Loren Chestnut“You set the framework [of your business]. You have the freedom to do that.” - Loren Chestnut BIBLE REFERENCES“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. - Exodus 20:8-11 ESVRejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESVDo not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. - Philippians 4:6 ESV RESOURCESLearn more about when Loren will do another in-person beginner and intermediate calligraphy class by signing up for her newsletter. Children oftentimes get a bad wrap. We tell them they've got ‘the easy life’ and how many of us adults would love to switch places with them. The problem, however, is that children go through tough times, too. However, many don't take their issues seriously.Last week, we shared how important it is to take care of yourself physically and mentally. It's also equally important that our kiddos learn to take care of their physical and mental health, too. In this episode, we chat about:why we should show concern for the things that bother our kiddos, why our words matter, helping our kiddos process their emotions,2 myths about why some people don't seek help for their mental health,5 tools to help your kiddo improve their mental health, and more! Quotes"When we show a lack of concern for the things that matter to them, it’s easier for them to believe the lies Satan whispers." - JaQuette Gilbert"If you're constantly hearing, "toughen up" but you're not told what "toughen up" means, a lot could get lost in translation. Mental health is still a touchy subject in many circles--even though it's 2021. No one wants to look as if they don't have it all together but the truth is, who does? What I can tell you is that God cares about you from the inside out, sis. You don't have to do anything to be loved or accepted by Him. He made you and you're good enough for Him. While you're keeping track of extracurricular activities, grocery runs, your job, and everything in between don't forget to take care of yourself. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. In this episode, we chat about:common issues moms face, why maintaining your mental health is vital, why sharing your story is important, help for when you're feeling low, and more!QuoteI wanted to give up on life a few times because I kept thinking my mom and Grandma made life look so easy. Losing a loved one is never easy. However, when a loved one chooses to end their life, that can add to the sting of loss. Heather Palacios knows all too well what it’s like to struggle with suicidal thoughts. She’s been on this journey since she was 8 years old and God has allowed her to use her life experiences to help others through their mental afflictions, too. Oftentimes, many of us are afraid to share our struggles with others. We fear what they will think, say or do. But Heather’s testimony shows us there’s so much power in owning your story and trusting God to use it to draw others closer to Him. Sharing isn’t always easy and we’re thankful Heather took the opportunity to help spread some hope for those struggling with suicidal ideation. Blown out diapers, grass stains from soccer games, and hurled spaghetti. These are just a few things we ladies encounter along our motherhood journey. The United States has come a long way in terms of equality; however, we still have much more work to do, as evidenced by the recent shooting of Daunte Wright, an unarmed Black man. So many men and women have fought and continue to do so to make life better for all people. For those individuals, including this week's guest, Dr. Quantrilla Ard, I'm deeply grateful.Over the past few years, I've come to realize there seems to be a divide within the Black community, in particular. Every ethnicity has certain cultural practices that are common to many in that community. The Black community is no different. While there isn't a problem with many of these shared experiences, I've grown to question some of them and whether or not they push me towards or away from God. I also often reflect on how we live in a world/country where everyone isn’t afforded the same access to healthcare. We’re also not afforded the same treatment when in comes to traffic stops, jogging in neighborhoods or walking home. Oftentimes, Black and Brown people experience less than stellar interactions with medical professionals and law enforcement (myself included) based on ill-founded judgments by the very people who are supposed to be helpers. For the record, I strongly believe I am a Christian who happens to have brown skin and naturally curly hair. My identity is in God alone. I also believe none of us are perfect and that there are some who make good choices while others don’t—in every industry. There isn’t a one size fits all approach to people. We are blessed to share many similarities but we also have beautiful differences, too.I wanted to process some of these thoughts with another Christian woman who happens to be Black, what life in America has looked like for her and how to find God in the middle of everything. I'm so glad my path crossed with Dr. Quantrilla Ard's. She's an AH-MAZING woman and this week, she shares with us:disparities in the American health care system, particularly as it pertains to maternal care for Black and Brown mamas, navigating the trauma associated with raising Black boys in America, unlearning things we learned regarding God and His character in our youth, the Christian response to injustices, and so much more! I’ve got to admit that the initial Bible journaling craze threw me for a loop! I didn’t understand why anyone would want to draw and color in their Bible. Don’t get me wrong—I love a good doodle and I actually used to draw a bit back in the day. It’s just that I grew up in an environment where I was taught the Bible is sacred and highlighting was the most I’d seen anyone do in their Bible. That’s why I’m so glad my friend, Jen was able to chat with me about some myths and misconceptions regarding Bible journaling. In this episode, Jen and I chat about:What Bible journaling is + how it can help us in our faith walk,How to make Bible studying fun,What to do if you don’t want to draw or write in your Bible,How Bible journaling can help you disciple your kiddos, and more!Scriptures to meditate on“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” - 2 Timothy 2:15“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” - Psalm 119:105“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. It's the end of the year and I'm sure you've seen your fair share of 2020 memes, many of which have a "good riddance" vibe. Rightfully so, there are undeniably several examples of things that sideswiped many of us. However, there's also a lot of good that came out of this year, too. In this year's final episode, we reflect on:highlights of some eye-opening events of 2020,what kind of character 2020 revealed about us,what happens when we don't pivot, adapt, or change with the times,my take of Disney's Soul, and what kind of legacy we plan to leave behind and pursue. With the normal ins and outs of daily life, none of us would question why we feel tired or have a cough. Neither did Lindsey. As a little girl, I remember dreaming about what my wedding day would look like, who I’d marry, and how many kiddos I’d have. It never occurred to me that there’s a possibility some families may experience difficulty in conceiving children. In the past few years, I’ve been exposed to stories of multiple families in this situation. As a result, some families choose to adopt. However, there are many nuances to the adoption process. That’s why I’m so glad Amanda joins us this week to share her family’s experiences. In this episode, we chat about:a simple lifestyle change to consider, myths surrounding infertility, signs you should see a specialist, what the adoption process is like, why including the birth mother is so important, how her relationship changed with God and her husband throughout this journey, and more!Quote - When lies come, we have to replace it with the truth. - Amanda HogueBIBLE REFERENCESHe settles the childless woman in her home as a happy mother of children. There's a misconception that if you've been in church for a while, you should know how to pray. However, that isn't always the case. For one reason or another, there are some individuals who either don't know how to pray or who don't feel as if they know how to do it properly. This can cause many to forego praying altogether, unfortunately. In today's chat, Pamela D. Smith shares with us:why she became a minister and author, why she helps Christian writers with the publishing process, how to know if you're operating in God's will,5 principles of prayer that changed her life, and more!If you've struggled with praying or want to learn how, pull up a chair and get ready to take notes on how you can start praying (effectively and confidently). Forrest Gump tried to tell us years ago that life is like one of those mixed chocolate boxes where you’re not really sure which flavor you’ll end up consuming. The older I become, the more I realize how true this simple analogy is.Sometimes we have a plan of what we want our life to look like but God has a different vision in mind. Life then becomes a journey of unlearning lies and toxic thoughts and instead one of learning the lessons God knows we need the most. That’s what we explore today in our chat with Lady J.In this episode we chat about:the importance and difficulties of loving yourself, trusting God with our ministry,people-pleasing,the pain of enduring a miscarriage, and more! As a recovering perfectionist, I’ve wondered at times if I’m qualified enough to be a mother to my three incredible daughters. Sarah and Steph remind us that perfectionism isn’t a requirement for parenting. Instead, we need a heart that puts God first. 2020 has been quite an eventful year. We've lost so many people we love and admire. Many have lost jobs, businesses, and homes, too. There's been so much pain and loss. Chadwick Boseman reminded us, however, that our struggles and pains are meant to shape us for our purpose. It's never fun going through tough times but these moments help prune us. To become the women God's called us to be will require us to die to our flesh daily and to take up our cross and follow Him wholeheartedly. In today's episode, we chat about how Joseph stayed faithful to God despite the pain and rejection he endured from his family + how we can, too. If he could endure one painful season after another, we can hang in there, too, sis! God's got us!Scriptures Referenced:Genesis 4:1-16* (I mistakenly said Genesis 3 in the audio. In season 2, we had the pleasure of chatting with Pastor Malcolm Walls about the responsibility Christians have in bridging the ethnic divide. This week, he's back for an encore and is also joined by an amazing guitarist and worship leader, Jac Mandel. We're at a turning point in history. For so many years, the African American community has spoken out about the injustices still running rampant in many parts of our nation and world. Now, with the invention of smartphones, we're seeing more and more cases of those injustices all over the media. If we're not careful, we may become hopeless when hearing of additional deaths. In this week's bonus episode, we have an extended, honest conversation about:what it's been like to see so much injustice happening in our country, why African Americans are targeted,if there is a right or wrong way to express emotions regarding the protests, how we can bridge the ethnic divide when trust is an issue, how to find God in the midst of turmoil, and more. "Happy wife, happy life." That's what many couples go into marriage believing. Can I tell you that statement isn't biblical, though? The success of a marriage shouldn't be dependent upon the happiness of only one person. As young girls, oftentimes we envision marriage as the fairy tales we read in books or see in movies. It generally doesn't cross our minds that God's called us to be submissive to our husbands. Or that life is about serving, not being served. No one is exempt from having poor thoughts. If you ever listen to interviews with athletes like Michael Jordan, you'll notice that even "the greats" have had their bouts. What sets them apart, oftentimes, is they find the resolve to disregard those poisonous thoughts and get the job done. Regardless of where you live or work, there’s something many people have in common: debt. In fact, according to Zack Friedman of Forbes, student loan debt in the United States reached $1.56 trillion dollars in 2019. We won’t even get into credit card, mortgage, and health-related debts. Many parents instill the need to make money in their kiddos—and not just any kind of money, but good money. The kind of money that will keep you from crawling back home to live with dear old Mom and Dad. However, the honest truth is that earning money isn’t always the issue. The real problem is that many people never grow up knowing how to manage money properly. When you don’t know how to manage money well, you can find yourself feeling as if you’re trapped behind invisible bars. Ericka Young used to feel this way, too. Fortunately, she and her husband realized they could go against the grain and live life in freedom instead of financial prison. In this episode, we chat about:why many people are okay with being in debt, what helps Ericka and her husband make financially fit decisions, the number one thing most people fail to do every month, how she and her husband approached college planning for their children, how she helps others get out of debt, and more! Podcasting is a ministry that's filled with ups and downs. There's a learning curve, for sure, but there's also an opportunity to learn and grow as a person and as believer. Some people believe in waiting to start any new project until every detail is perfect. However, that's not necessarily how God operated in the lives of many in the Bible. In today's episode, JaQuette shares:thanks to everyone who has made this podcasting journey possible,3 lessons she's learned as a person and a podcaster since taking the plunge into podcasting,3 lessons she's learned from guests throughout the past year, and encouragement for those wanting to take their thoughts captive everyday.Scripture ReferencesPhilippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.Romans 8:28 - And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.SpecialsFor the month of May, take $10 off all order over $50 from the Keeping It Centered shop by using the code KIC10 at checkout. We’re living in a time where some jobs are considered essential and others aren’t. While this may be relieving and secretly exciting to some (hey, fellow introverts!), others may feel differently. To some, this may bring up old conversations about choosing “the right” career. You know, one that’s deemed “valuable” and “important” by the population at large. In today’s episode, we chat about:God’s view of jobs, what happens when some Levites challenge Moses and Aaron’s authority, and where our value really lies.“Our value doesn’t lie in our role. When it comes to our health and body image, there’s so much to think about. For example, I’m sure most of us have looked in the mirror a time or two and didn’t like what we saw. Maybe we didn’t like the way our arms or thighs looked. Maybe we didn’t think certain health issues would be of concern. The thing is, God truly does work everything out for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28). He may not meet our expectations for the situation but sis, God’s way is always best—even when we don’t understand His plan. If you’re having trouble believing this, then this is the episode for you. Some highlights of our conversation include:how God can use our health issues for our good and the good of others, the danger in choosing diet labels, lies we believe about body image, how cultural views of beauty affect us,how to have a biblical view of our body imagewhat to do when you fall off the wagon regarding your health goals, and more!RESOURCES MENTIONED3 Scriptures to Pray Over Your Body Image - blog postRecipes and devotionals on Cara’s website BIBLE VERSES TO MEDITATE ONOr do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? Fear isn't altogether a bad thing. It certainly helps our adrenaline start up when we need to take cover from a falling object or run away from an animal. However, fear can become an issue when it stops us from living in freedom and having the intimate relationship God wants with us. In today's episode, we chat about:three reasons we become afraid, examples of when the Israelites were fearful, andwhat we can learn from their experiences. We at Keeping It Centered do recognize that some people suffer from clinical conditions that may make it difficult to easily stop being fearful. While the content in this episode is based on Biblical figures, we do realize some people may also need assistance from a professional counselor or therapist. I remember choosing a major during my senior year of high school. I wasn't really sure what to do but I had an amazing French teacher (whom I still visit annually!). I told myself that if I could be half the teacher she was to me, I'd feel as if I made a difference. She was simply the best at helping me as a student and as a young person finding her way in this great big world. After my first year, I realized how unprepared I still felt. I was overwhelmed with this new chapter of my life and didn't realize how many hats I'd end up playing for the sake of my students. I definitely could've benefited from someone like Jill Miller.Jill Miller is one of the faces behind the brand, Teacher, Be Still. This is an organization that exists to help teachers be even more amazing at their jobs. Jill and her team show educators the importance of keeping God first as well as the benefits of prioritizing their personal wellness. In this episode, Jill shares:how becoming an educator changed her relationship with God,how God got her attention regarding the path she was taking in life, her thoughts on the education divide + how we as Christians should respond to it,advice for those ready to leave the profession, and more!Keep in touch with Jill and the Teacher, Be Still brand!Instagram - @teacherbestillFacebook - @teacherbestillWebsite - www.teacherbestill.com SponsorThis episode is brought to you by Blessed Camp. We've all been there. We've created a description about someone we really admired or love and the unthinkable happens: they fail us. They do something to shatter this iconic vision we had of them--and truth be told, we feel some kinda way about it. I mean, we know people aren't perfect but we expected better from this person. I've been there, too. I've had family members and acquaintances that let me down because they didn't live up to my expectations. At other times, they didn't come through for me as I wanted or needed them to. Fortunately, God models time and time again in the Word how we're to respond when people fail us. There are certain times of year when we hear more people focusing on giving and serving one another. Generally, these moments are around holidays. While there's nothing wrong with doing nice things for others, we as Christians must be sure that our motives are pleasing to God.In this week's episode, we take a look at Philippians 2:1-15 and dissect Christ's greatest example of servant hood. Take a listen and decide how you can apply this passage to your own walk of faith.Reflection QuestionsWhy am I serving in this capacity? Am I willing to do the hard things for the sake + benefit of others?Am I looking for a blessing that I'm not willing to work + sacrifice for?Am I ready to handle the magnitude of the blessing I want? What kind of servant am I?What does my heart reveal?Do my beliefs and actions align with God’s vision of servanthood?Let's connect!Be sure to share and subscribe to the Keeping It Centered Podcast. My mother gave her life to Christ when I was a preschooler and ever since then, I spent a lot of time in church. One thing I've noticed is that the First Lady (a.k.a. the Pastor's wife) is oftentimes the most respected woman in the congregation. However, there are some churches where the First Lady's position is misunderstood, questioned, and sometimes, blatantly disrespected. I thought it would be great to explore some things that Pastors' wives go through and learn how we can be more supportive and understanding of just how valuable these women of God are. This week on the podcast, First Lady Michelle Philpott shares:how she got her start in ministry, how she felt when her husband told her God wanted him to pastor a church, what her experience has been like for the past two decades, the joys and challenges of growing a ministry, how to maintain your identity, how to create boundaries for your marriage and family, why she became a realtor, and more!If you are a Pastor's wife or will be soon, this episode is for you! Even if you aren't called to be a Pastor's wife, you can still learn from this episode how to appreciate the leaders at your church. Every leader needs prayer and empathy from the congregation. When we look around us, we are reminded of how far we've come globally as people who accept one another regardless of our pigmentation. However, various events in the United States alone over the past few years suggest we still have a long way to go in bridging the racial divide. So, what's the Christian's role in all of this?Historically, some believed skin pigmentation dictated who was "good" versus "evil". Even in churches, this mindset permeated, causing further division. In this episode, Pastor Malcolm Walls breaks down:-the hard truth about why there's still work to do to bridge the racial divide in the United States,-what we as Christians can do to bring unity in our communities,-the church's role in showing the love of Christ,-and resources to educate us on the racial divide and its effects on our country.Resources*Pastor Malcolm suggests reading books by people of various ethnic backgrounds, not just one.*Blood Lines: Race, Cross, and the Christian by John PiperOne Blood: Parting Words to the Church on Race and Love by Dr. John PerkinsDream with Me: Race, Love, and the Struggle We Must Win by Dr. John PerkinsThe Gospel in Black and White: Theological Resources for Racial Reconciliation (multiple authors) edited by Dennis OkholmBooks about grace by Francis ChanBooks on racial justice and reconciliation by Brenda Salter McNeilBe sure to share and subscribe to the Keeping It Centered Podcast. Society has its own definition of freedom but God's perspective is much different. What kind of message are we as wives, moms, and difference makers sharing with those around us? Do we know what our freedoms are in Christ? Here are some key scriptures we referenced to help us understand our freedom: John 8:34, 36 -we used to be slaves to sin but we are now free because of Christ. Matthew 4:1-11 - Jesus models how we are to use our freedom to resist Satan and call him out on his lies. Genesis 3 - God models how because of Him, we have the freedom to practice grace. Joshua 2 - God gives grace to Rahab. Daniel 6 - God gives grace to Daniel. Romans 8:1 - We are free from condemnation. Questions to ponder/journal: How will we live in freedom daily? How will we teach our children to do the same? How will we build a marriage and/or business that reflects our freedom in Christ? Tina shares lots of gems with us in this week's episode. Here are some highlights: Although it's tempting to control our kiddo's every move, that type of stance won't help them develop a personal relationship with God. The best way to teach our children how to live a Christ-centered life is by modeling it for them every day. We must learn to trust God with our children, especially when it seems as if they've gone astray. If God saved us, this is proof our children aren't too far gone to be saved either.
