Today on the podcast is Head Coach of HOKA NAZ Elite Jack Mullaney.  Born and raised in Eagan, Minn., Jack stayed in state and attended the University of Minnesota, where he spent time as a student assistant for the Gopher athletics program. After graduating in 2014 with a Bachelor's degree in Finance, he spent a brief time in the financial world before returning to Minnesota to pursue his passion for coaching. His journey began in sports administration, serving as the operations assistant for the University of Minnesota's track & field and cross-country programs during the 2015/2016 school year. He moved on to Utah State in the fall of 2016, where he spent a year as the Director of Operations for the Aggies, organizing both the 2016 NCAA Cross Country Mountain Regional and 2017 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships. In 2017, he was finally given a chance to enter the coaching world when he was hired on as the assistant cross country and track and field coach at the University of Portland. For the next seven years, Jack was a key staff member for the successful Pilots distance program, working with men's coach Rob Conner and women's coach Ian Solof. During his time at the U of P, he went back to school and earned a Master's of Science in Sport Management from West Virginia University in 2021. He is also a Certified Strength & Conditioning Coach (CSCS) and a USATF Level 3 Coach. While at Portland, Jack helped lead the men to two podium finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships and the women to their highest-ever finish in program history. The recruiting coordinator for both programs, Jack helped bring top athletes to Portland from across the United States and abroad. He also worked with multiple Portland athletes after they graduated including France's Emmanuel Roudolff-Lévisse who represented his country at the 2022 European Championships.  In today's conversation, Jack takes me through his journey as an athlete and coach, lessons he's learned over the years, what it's been like working with NAZ Elite thus far, future ambitions, and so much more! Today I have the privilege of speaking with Abby Nichols! I had the great honor of doing a live podcast with Abby this past month in St. Louis the evening before she ran 4:26.08 in the mile. From the moment I met her, I knew Abby was genuinely an amazing human being. I did her cooldown with her after she ran that race, as we dove into the depths of philosophy, trust, and other subjects that I normally discuss on the podcast. At that point, I knew I had to get Abby on for a proper long-form conversation and display her depth and wisdom. For those unfamiliar with Abby, she is a standout distance runner with an impressive track record (no pun intended). She was a State Champion in both track and cross country during her high school years in Kettering, Ohio. At Ohio State University and later the University of Colorado, she showcased her talent, earning multiple accolades, such as the Big 10 Champion in the 5,000 meters and three-time Pac 12 Champion. Abby's success continued as she joined HOKA NAZ Elite last summer, achieving remarkable performances both on the track and grass, setting personal bests, team records, and securing top finishes at national championships. Her dedication and passion for running has made her a rising star in the world of distance running. In this conversation, you'll hear about Abby's journey in the sport, the different adversity she's faced throughout her career, handling failures, why having a short-term memory in sport is so important, separating your identity from your sport, and much more. This conversation was wide-ranging and packed with depth. I know you'll find great value in Abby's story and the wisdom she shares. "I want to consistently compete for podium finishes in the U.S. road racing scene. I'll probably still dabble with the track a little bit as well. I have unfinished business there. My big goals for this year are to be more consistently competitive for titles and also gain confidence going into 2024." 2022 USATF marathon champion Paige Stoner has signed a pro contract and joined HOKA NAZ Elite and is training under coach Alan Culpepper in Flagstaff, Arizona. "I saw a lot of people, especially on social media, saying, ‘She's not gonna make it.' And in my mind, I wanted to prove them wrong. And I think, honestly, that might have been my biggest downfall — trying to do more too soon, to prove to people that I could do this." It would be putting it lightly to say that the past two years have been a whirlwind for professional runner Aliphine Tuliamuk. At the beginning of 2020, she won the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon, earning herself a spot on Team USA for the Tokyo Olympics. Then, when the Olympics were postponed due to the pandemic, she and her partner, Tim, saw that as an opportunity: Instead of going to Japan and competing at the Olympics that summer, Aliphine was newly pregnant. She gave birth to a baby girl, Zoe, in January 2021. Then, with the Olympics just seven months away, new-mom Aliphine went all-in on marathon training (with a plus-one!). She traveled to Tokyo, lined up at the start of her first Olympic race, and had to pull out after 20K due to an injury. Today on the show, Aliphine talks about taking a much-needed break after Tokyo, and about how she knew — physically and emotionally — that she was ready to get back on the run. The Hoka NAZ Elite athlete is currently happy, healthy, and ready to light the fall racing scene on fire. (Her words!) This weekend, Aliphine will race the USATF 20K Championships, and then she will line up for her first marathon since Tokyo at the 2022 TCS New York City Marathon in November. Nick  Hauger is a professional runner for HOKA Northern Arizona Elite and a co-host of the Running Rivals Podcast, both based out of Flagstaff, AZ.  In this episode, we talked about Nick's build to his debut marathon , CIM (California International Marathon), which is this Sunday December 5th.  Coming off a summer foot injury, Nick feels that doing the little things and leaning on his team have made a huge difference in his training consistency.  This consistency has put him in the best shape of his life and helped him recently achieve a top 10 finish at the USATF 25KM championships.  Nick is a plant-based athlete and shared how it has a positive impact on his health and running!  Listen to learn more about Nick, including his current favorite Athletic Brewing beer and who has the better facial hair between him and his fellow teammate, podcast co-host, and CIM competitor, Rory Linkletter.   This episode is extra special because we met Nick at Bruce Camp this past summer and Nick is now Jess's new coach.  We hope you enjoy our conversation as much as we did!  Who let the Haugs out?

On today's show, we have Eric Senseman. Eric is a professional trail runner for Hoka One One, Rabbit, and Gu Energy.  Alongside Jim Walmsley, Tim Freriks, Stephen Kirsch, Jared Hazen, and Cody Reed,  Eric is also a member of the Coconino Cowboys, the famous training group based in the American endurance sports Mecca of Flagstaff, AZ. Like previous guests of the pod, one of the things I appreciate about Eric is how willing and excited he is to comment on some of the biggest issues, opportunities, and questions around our sport.  We discuss: the factors required to create the Coconino Cowboys, the similarities and differences of their setup to counterparts like Hoka NAZ Elite in the track and field space, as well the conditions needed to build similar training groups elsewhere in the US. Eric reflects on his strategy of surrounding himself with better runners in order to fast track his ascent in the sport. We talk about the makings of a good trail town, and we cover how media coverage is evolving in our sport and what innovation will look like in the near and long terms. Enjoy!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/singletracknews)
