Ben Davison reviews the return of the ABC's flagship political discussion show, Insiders. As host David Speers manages to make incredibly dismissive off hand comment about the Robodebt Royal Commission and another panelist waves off the only first nations panellist's views about the situation in Alice Springs Professor Megan Davis patiently explains that The Voice referendum is about principles, not details. No one knows where the offices will be or what colour the business cards might have on them but we do know that the launch of the YES campaign is happening while Ben and Van Badham will be doing the Week on Wednesday LIVE! at Adelaide Fringe Festival (tickets here: https://adelaidefringe.com.au/fringetix/the-week-on-wednesday-live-with-van-badham-ben-davison-live-podcast-af2023) and our hosts hope to give you a report back in a future episode. Ben looks at the Chifley Research Centre conference in Canberra where Albo has defined the referendum as being about two principles; Recognition and Consultation, Tony Burke has outlined the next phases of workplace law reforms and Jim Chalmers has built on his excellent Monthly essay where he essentially argues that society and the economy are two sides of the same coin. Ben explores what that might mean in the context of the inflation challenge, falling living standards and record profits in some sectors. Yesterday was World Cancer day and Ben reminds us why union safety standards are so important; 1 in 10 cancers around the world are due to workplace exposure to hazardous material. Linda is one of Australia's most well-known union leaders. She's been at the forefront of some of our biggest industrial campaigns from supporting workers during the collapse of Ansett and Virgin through to the ASU's equal remuneration campaign. Linda is also the Chair of the Chifley Research Centre, a director at Statewide Super and former vice-president of the ACTU. Linda will draw from the collective experience of union members as we talk about: Virgin Australia's collapse - protecting workers, strong unions and the role of government. Job Keeper, Job Seeker, casual and international workers - what needs to be done to protect non-permanent employees. Keeping our social, community sector and other frontline workers safe, and remunerated, during a crisis. How Unions and progressive organisations can work together to deliver the bold social and economic reform our country desperately needs. Plus - your questions!

Welcome to Episode 27 of Good Will Hunters, with Amit Singh. Amit is the head of Global Policy at Uber, responsible for economic policy, future of work and digital marketplaces. He previously served as the Senior Economic Adviser to Australian Prime Ministers Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard and Deputy Chief of Staff and Head of Policy to the Leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten. Earlier in his career, he worked as a capital markets lawyer and a corporate M&A adviser, as well as co-founder of a consumer startup that has grown to over 315,000 members and co-founder of Tuxedo Tuesday with Fitted for Work, an initiative to promote the economic participation of women. He is also director of the Chifley Research Centre and a member of the OECD’s Future of Work Engagement Group. Amit and I met a few weeks back at the Australia India Youth Dialogue, the leading Track Two Dialogue between Australia and India. Our first conversation took place at a crowded tram stop on Exhibition Street, in Melbourne CBD, and within about 4 minutes of meeting Amit, I asked him to be on the podcast. In this episode, we tackle some of the most exciting, and most pressing, issues of this day and age - the future of our global workforce, the meaning of ethics, building safety nets for the most vulnerable people in our communities, fostering cross-cultural dialogue, and also why Uber Pool is responsible for many things, including a few marriages!
