This week, Stephen Donnelly covers election results in the ACT, the NT, and Western Australia.First-time guest Louise Crossman is a Canberra based political strategist and former president of ACT Labor. She and Stephen discuss the ACT results, including the rise of independents and how Labor almost lost the seat of Bean.In the Northern Territory Ryan Neve explains how turnout for Labor in remote communities ensured big swings in Lingiari, and the impact a popular CLP Chief Minister had on the race in Solomon. Finally in Western Australia Priya Brown revisits her original predictions and wagers - Bullwinkel's surprising swing to Labor did indeed signal a nationwide triumph for Labor - even if it hurt Priya in the pocket. Join us for this joyful episode - and don't forget to book tickets for our live show if you live near Melbourne!May 29, 7pmThe Toff in Town52 Swanston St, Melbourne VIC 3000Team Leaders and Campaign Organisers - Message Us for 2 x Free TicketsCanvassers- Book Tickets Here.CHAPTERS:00:00 Episode Start03:01 The ACT06:26 Bean14:19 The Senate23:26 The NT24:41 Solomon29:19 Lingiari34:15 Territory Election40:11 Western Australia46:39 Bullwinkel49:22 Pearce52:58 Canning56:51 Tangney01:02:11 MooreNew episodes every Friday.Join our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/SociallyDemocraticFollow Us on Socials:Facebook (https://tr.ee/9jGIOy)Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/sociallydemocratic)LinkedIn (https://tr.ee/YxyYJh)Twitter (https://x.com/SocialDemPod)Bluesky (https://tr.ee/EqdapC)YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/@DunnStreet)The presenting sponsor of the Socially Democratic podcast is Dunn Street. Leanaí tinne as Gaza in Éirinn le cóireáil leighis a chur orthu. Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has confirmed that eight sick children have arrived in Ireland from Gaza for treatment in hospitals in this country. Tá sé dearbhaithe ag an Aire Sláinte Stephen Donnelly go bhfuil ochtar páistí tinne tagtha go hÉirinn as Gaza le cóir leighis a chur orthu in ospidéil sa tír seo. Ireland is one of ten countries that has accepted a request from the World Health Organization to come to the aid of children from Gaza suffering from cancer, blood disorders or other serious illnesses. Tá Éire ar cheann de dheich dtír a ghlac le hiarratas ón Eagraíocht Dhomhanda Sláinte teacht i gcabhair ar leanaí as Gaza a bhfuil ailse, aicíd fola nó galar tromchúiseach eile orthu. Around 30 sick children are due to arrive in Ireland from Gaza in the next few months and the first eight were welcomed as they disembarked from a Slovak Government plane at Dublin Airport last night. Tá thart ar 30 leanbh tinn le teacht go Éirinn as Gaza as seo go ceann roinnt míonna agus cuireadh fáilte roimh an gcéad ochtar nuair a tháinig siad amach as eitleán de chuid Rialtas na Slóvaice ag Aerfort Bhaile Átha Cliath aréir. The children were accompanied by caregivers and siblings, and they will live with health workers who have volunteered to provide them with accommodation. In éineacht leis na páistí tháinig cúramóirí agus deartháireacha agus deirfiúracha dóibh, agus cónóidh siadsan le hoibrithe sláinte a dheonaigh lóistín a chur ar fáil dóibh. In light of its implications, the plan has been in preparation for some time by various Government Departments and the Health Service Executive in collaboration with medical professionals and the Irish Red Cross. I bhfianaise a aimpléisí atá sé, tá an plean á réiteach le tamall ag Ranna Rialtais éagsúla agus Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte i gcomhar le lucht leighis agus Cros Dhearg na hÉireann. It is understood that a medical team from Ireland went to Gaza to assess sick children and to obtain further information about their needs from their families or other caregivers. Tuigtear go ndeachaigh foireann leighis as Éirinn go Gaza le measúnú a dhéanamh ar leanaí tinne agus le tuilleadh eolais a fháil faoina gcuid riachtanas óna muintreacha nó ó dhaoine eile a thugann aire dóibh. However, children with orthopedic needs are not currently being considered due to lack of resources. Níl leanaí a bhfuil riachtanais ortaipéideacha acu á gcur san áireamh faoi láthair, áfach, de cheal acmhainne. RTÉ News and Current Affairs Nuacht agus Cúrsaí Reatha RTÉ

Health Minister Defends UHL Response In Fiery Dáil Debate

The Health Minister has defended his Department's response to enhancing capacity, staffing and resources across the UL Hospitals Group in the face of consistent and worsening overcrowding this year. It follows a fiery debate held in the Dáil on the matter in light of the harrowing findings of former Chief Justice Frank Clarke's Report into the Death of Shannon Teenager Aoife Johnston at University Hospital Limerick. The overcrowding crisis at UHL has once again dominated headlines this week, following the publication of the Clarke Report, which determined the circumstances surrounding Aoife Johnston's death "were almost certainly avoidable". 2024 remains on course to be the worst year on record for trolley numbers at Dooradoyle with the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation documenting 2,225 admitted patients without beds up to July . Sinn Féin TD Maurice Quinlivan whose party called for last night's debate insists too many families have unnecessarily lost loved ones at UHL in recent times due to the conditions. The Health Minister has defended the response made by his Department in light of recent events though. Stephen Donnelly claims the bed capacity planned for UHL alone will be the equivalent of bringing a new model 4 and model 3 hospital to the MidWest. He confirmed in the Dáil that the first of two 96 bed blocks due to come on stream at Dooradoyle will be operational by the first quarter of next year, with the second to be built by 2028. Additionally, a site for a dedicated surgical hub has been established at Scoil Carmel in Limerick, which its claimed will cater for 4,000 extra day case surgeries, 6,000 minor operations and 18,000 outpatient consultations annually. Minister Donnelly believes that a failure to reform workplace practices have been to blame for the worsening situation at UHL this year. The Department of Health has also confirmed a committee will be established to implement the recommendations of the Clarke Report. But the Minister is facing criticism from a coalition colleague for a failure to address Oireachtas members and Clare County Council on UHL's Winter plan ahead of the expected seasonal surge. Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator and Oireachtas Health Committee member Martin Conway says the delay is inexcusable.

2,285 admitted patients were left waiting for beds at University Hospital Limerick in total this month, which is 1,180 more people on trolleys than the next busiest facility; Cork University Hospital. The INMO says that despite an expert team being in the Dooradoyle facility for the month of May, there was only six days when there was less than one hundred people on trolleys at UHL. This week, the Government has announced that by 2028 an additional 84 acute inpatient beds will be delivered at UHL, an additional 48 will come on stream at Ennis General, and 24 beds will go to Nenagh Community Hospital. Speaking to Clare FM's Morning Focus though, the Health Minister admits increased capacity is needed immediately to combat overcrowding in the region, but insists the delivery of beds takes sufficient time. Stephen Donnelly says that capacity alone won't solve the problem and that patient care reforms at UHL need to come in line with national trends. The leader of the main opposition party, meanwhile, claims while it's committed to providing the public healthcare services in Clare, the Government will not. Under Sinn Féin's alternative plan, launched this month, the party is promising an elective only hospital for the region and making Ennis General a 24/7 Urgent Care Centre. In February, 758 children were waiting to undergo dental procedures in the MidWest and Sinn Féin's is pledging to increase dental training places nationwide by 32%. Speaking during a visit to Clare, Sinn Féin Leader Deputy Mary-Lou McDonald says the coalitions approach lacks all common sense.

Clare Govt Senator Calls For Third New 96-Bed Block To Ease Pressure At UHL

A Clare Government Senator is calling for a third new 96-bed block to be approved and delivered at University Hospital Limerick in order to tackle legacy capacity issues. It comes as the third HIQA Report in a row, published this week found patient privacy and dignity continues to be impacted by overcrowding. On it's latest unannounced visit the Health Inspection and Quality Authority found the level of overcrowding at Dooradoyle's Emergency Department was not consistent with a human-rights based approach to care. According to HIQA, University Hospital Limerick's Emergency Department has planned capacity for only 49 service users, but last year an average of 219 patients atended the ED every single day. Despite this, a Clare member of the Oireachtas Health Committee claims reopening a 24/7 Accident Emergency Department in Ennis goes against the wishes of the INMO and the Irish Medical Organisation. There are currently two-new 96 bed blocks planned for UHL which promise to increase bed capacity by 167 in real terms by 2027. But Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway believes until the clinical advice says otherwise, commitment to a third new 96 bed-block at UHL is the most practical solution for now. The Health Minister has commissioned a review though led by MidWest Regional Healthcare Executive Officer Sandra Broderick, that will analyse if another A&E is needed at either Ennis, Nenagh and St.Johns. HIQA's latest report found once again though that patient flow continues to be ineffectively managed at the region's main hospital. Speaking on the floor of the Dáil, Stephen Donnelly says the issue needs to be urgently resolved to improve patient outcomes at the hospital. A Clare Independent TD though believes the Minister must inject as much funding as possible into Ennis Hospital in order to maximise capacity there. Kilrush Deputy Violet Anne-Wynne claims that contrary to government predictions, the second 96-bed block currently planned for UHL is not due to come on stream until the third quarter of 2028. She insists that capital investment is needed in Ennis now as the reopening of the A&E is inevitable.
