China's Chokehold on Critical Minerals

China Global

Critical minerals are required for the manufacturing of electronics, aerospace equipment, medical devices, and renewable energy technologies, making them essential for a country's economic and national security. These materials have been at the center of China's domestic and foreign policy for many decades, and China's ability to integrate internal industrial policies with foreign trade and investment policies has allowed them to gain dominance in the market. Meanwhile, the US has lagged behind China in terms of both access to and processing technology of critical minerals. The country has been heavily dependent on China for its critical minerals and struggles to find an alternative supplier.China's announcement to impose export restrictions on seven rare earth elements on April 4th has opened many conversations surrounding critical minerals, especially regarding the US and its supply chain vulnerabilities. What has China done to achieve their global dominance in the critical minerals sector, and what can the US do to address the overdependence issue they are facing today? To answer these questions and more, host Bonnie Glaser is joined by Gracelin Baskaran, the director of the Critical Minerals Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. She is a mining economist whose area of expertise is critical minerals and trade. Timestamps[00:00] Start[02:13] US Dependencies on Rare Earths and Critical Minerals[03:51] Sourcing from Latin America, Africa, and Asia[06:28] Environmental Harm from Mining and Processing[08:11] Deliberate Suppression of the Price of Rare Earths in the Market[11:06] Chinese Exports Restrictions on Seven Rare Earth Elements[14:08] US Administrations' Approaches to Critical Minerals Vulnerability[20:02] 2010 Fishing Boat Accident and Japan's Response [24:00] What might China do moving forward? [27:42] Timeframe for the US to Catch Up to China

The federal budgeting process can be hard for the average American to comprehend - until now. Economist Dr. Paul Winfree walks us step by step through how Congress passes a budget and all the legislative/political hurdles that get in its way. We cover the historical evolution of the budget process leading up to the word you've been hearing every day in the news – reconciliation. We look at how presidents from Nixon to Trump influenced the budget process to pass their agendas. We examine some of the most controversial reconciliation bills over the past decade and how they impacted the economy. And we discuss much needed Medicaid reforms, overhauling the tax system with consumption-based taxation and universal savings accounts, and much more.     Dr. Paul Winfree is President of the Economic Policy Innovation Center. During the 1st Trump Administration, he was Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy and Deputy Director of the Domestic Policy Council, and Chair of the Deputies Committee that managed policy implementation across federal agencies. We could bury our heads in the sand, or we could force a course correction with Trump before it's too late. Nobody is discussing this, but earlier this week, Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, shocked the world and pressured Israel to accept a deal to essentially rebuild Hamas and release 1,000 terrorists in exchange for only some of the hostages, who might not even be alive. I explain what this represents, where it's coming from, and how there is a shadow Cabinet around Trump that is tied in with global special interest money, including foreign Arab money tied to Qatar, that will subvert even the views of Trump's relatively good Cabinet. Trump also has a desire to be seen as a nonpartisan deal-maker to solve left-wing goals. That's why the global Left's opposition to him has essentially evaporated. If we don't demand a course correction now, you can expect us to get rolled by the same people for the same reasons on spending, immigration, social issues, and every other priority that has even less support among Republican elites than Israel. Mr. Lazarus discusses how this is likely not feasible, since this would mean amending the Constitution. Instead, he proposes the elimination of the "winner take all electoral votes" in those states that have this pattern. Instead, he proposes that all electoral votes be counted for whichever candidate has them. This is true only for a few states now. In recent years, the legal profession has increasingly prioritized diversity in law firm hiring and litigation leadership, driven by demands from corporate clients, alumni, and judges. Efforts to increase the representation of women and non-white lawyers have become so integral that they are now reflected in proposed formal rules, such as the FRCP 16.1, which would require judges to consider identity characteristics when selecting leadership teams for multidistrict litigation (MDL). This potential codification raises important questions about the legality and implications of identity-based preferences in the legal profession. How should client preferences for diversity be balanced with Title VII commitments, and what role should diversity of background play in law firm hiring and the selection of MDL legal teams? This panel will explore these issues, examining both the legal and policy arguments surrounding identity-based preferencing in legal employment.Featuring:Dean andré douglas pond cummings, Dean and Professor of Law, Widener University Commonwealth Law SchoolProf. Darrell D. The case of former Stoughton Police Detective Matthew Farwell, who is accused of murdering Sandra Birchmore, has sparked calls for additional charges under the Unborn Victims of Violence Act. Farwell, 38, allegedly killed Birchmore, 23, in her Canton apartment on February 1, 2021, after she revealed she was pregnant with his child. Farwell's indictment includes charges related to the murder of Birchmore, who was about two months pregnant at the time. Prosecutors allege Farwell strangled Birchmore and staged her death to appear as a suicide. The disturbing details of the case have led some to argue for the inclusion of an additional charge related to the unborn child. “It is hard to imagine a more clear-cut case for enforcing federal law for protecting unborn children than this one,” said Roger Severino, Vice President of Domestic Policy at the Heritage Foundation. “The very existence of the unborn child was the very evidence against this monster.” Birchmore had shared her excitement about the pregnancy with Farwell through a text message, including a photo of a handmade card that read, “Congrats, we are going to be parents!” However, Farwell allegedly reacted negatively to the news, leading to the fatal incident. Assistant Special Agent in Charge Steve Kelleher from the Boston FBI emphasized the severity of Farwell's actions: “Matthew Farwell's gun and badge did not grant him authority to violate the Constitution and certainly didn't entitle him to sexually exploit, abuse, and rape a child before killing her and her unborn baby in an attempt to cover up his alleged crime.” The Unborn Victims of Violence Act, also known as "Laci and Conner's Law," could be applied in this case. The law, enacted in 2004, allows for separate charges if an unborn child is harmed or killed during a federal crime. Activists, including Colbe Mazzarella, president of the Pro-Life Legal Defense Fund, and Autumn Christensen of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, are pushing for the application of this law to Farwell's case. “The accusation that a police officer killed his former student and their unborn baby strikes horror in every feeling heart,” Mazzarella said. “This law was passed by Republicans and Democrats to punish and prevent many abusers who kill pregnant women or use violence to force a woman to abort their child.” Critics of the law, including the American Civil Liberties Union, argue that it could undermine a woman's right to make decisions about her own pregnancy. The ACLU has expressed concerns that recognizing the unborn child as a separate victim could threaten reproductive rights. Despite these concerns, the FBI's Kelleher noted additional evidence that Birchmore had no intention of suicide, including recent attempts to book a newborn photo shoot and purchase baby clothes. “Our investigation also uncovered evidence inconsistent with someone choosing to die by suicide,” he said. The federal prosecutors have left the door open for additional charges, and the possibility remains that Farwell could face further legal repercussions. Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy has indicated that any new evidence will be thoroughly investigated. As legal and political debates continue, the case underscores the complexities of applying federal laws to crimes involving unborn children. For now, the focus remains on obtaining justice for both Sandra Birchmore and her unborn child. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? On this episode of The Alex Pierson Podcast, we first start out talking about high schools, and if students really benefit from taking final exams to apply to post-secondary schools. There is a growing argument to ditch them completely, but how will that help the students? Alex Pierson speaks with Paige MacPherson, the associate director of education policy at the Fraser Institute who explains why students need to learn about being tested and failing before getting into the real world. Next, after Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown revealed Ontario's first "mobile x-ray" to check shipping containers for stolen vehicles, Alex Pierson has an important question that needs answering...why do we only have one...and why in Ontario? To help make sense of it all, Alex speaks with Bryan Gast a former OPP Officer and the current VP of Investigative Services at Equite Association. Bryan helps to explain just how useful this tool is, and how it ties in with the new National Auto Theft Plan. And finally, Alex talks about the one thing many people in this province have been asking for years now...should we consider privatizing the LCBO considering another strike is likely to happen? Aaron Wudrick is the Director of Domestic Policy at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute and is well-versed in this issue. Will it be good, or bad for taxpayers? Would privatizing the LCBO increase or decrease liquor selections? Tune in to find out all the answers.
