On this episode we have Derry-based journalist Leona O'Neill, who is a former Belfast Telegraph journalist, a columnist for the Irish News, the course director of journalism at Ulster University and now the co-editor of a new book entitled 'Breaking: Trauma In the Newsroom'. We chat to Leona about mental health and the once prevalent stiff upper lip attitudes in the newsrooms around the country. We talk to her about how this developed into conversations with fellow journalists that gave Leona and her co-editor Chris Lindsay the impetus to put down their experiences in a book. We discuss the horrific events of the night Lyra McKee was murdered and the ugly aftermath where Leona was targeted by online trolls. 'Breaking: Trauma in the Newsroom' published by Maverick House is out now and features chapters by Leona and Chris and a number of journalists who have covered some of the worst events in our recent history. Leona O'Neill witnessed the murder of fellow journalist Lyra McKee in April 2019, an incident that she reported on diligently, barely realising how it was traumatising her. Together with Chris Lindsay she has put together a book called "Breaking - Trauma In The Newsroom", in which some of the best journalists in Britain and Ireland relate their stories of how their work had massive negative effects on their mental health. Leona discusses that fateful night and talks about its aftermath, the need for proper supports for journalists covering traumatic events and how we have to make it OK to talk about trauma and to ask for help in modern newsrooms.
Leona O'Neill is our guest for this World Mental Health Day episode. Here she speaks with Hannah Storm and John Crowley about the horrific moment when fellow journalist Lyra McKee was shot dead as she stood next to her, while covering a riot in Northern Ireland. Leona shares how in the aftermath of that trauma, she became the target of violent online threats and how these episodes impacted her mental health. Speaking with humanity and immense bravery, Leona describes how she was motivated to channel her trauma to tackle taboos in our industry, and how the book, 'Breaking: Trauma in the Newsroom' came from that. The book, published this month and edited by Leona and the BBC's Chris Lindsay, combines the courageous testimonies of journalists who describe how their work has impacted their mental health. It's a tribute to their courage and to the determination of our podcast guest and her passion to move from a news culture that breaks us to one that makes better journalism.

If Aimee Mayo had never become a successful Nashville songwriter, her story would still be worth telling. Growing up in a dysfunctional family in Gadsden, Alabama, Aimee dreamed of a life beyond constant personal chaos and somehow, against all odds, she achieved it. Her book recounting that journey, "Talking To The Sky: A memoir about living your best life in a sh*t show" is available now and is an engrossing study in human resilience. It's also really, really well-written. That Aimee is here at all is a testament to her spirit, her talent, and her unwavering faith in a better life than the one she lived growing up. A successful songwriter of hits for artists like Blake Shelton (Every Time I Hear That Song), Tim McGraw (You're My Best Friend), Kenny Chesney (Who You'd Be Today), Martina McBride(This One's For The Girls), Kelly Pickler (Red High Heels), she is probably best known for co-writing the multi-genre smash, "Amazed" for Lonestar along with now-husband Chris Lindsay and Marv Green. That year Aimee ALSO won the BMI country songwriter of the year award – becoming one of only a handful of female writers to win both- putting her in the company of ladies like Dolly, Loretta and Taylor. Not bad for someone who doesn’t play an instrument and who, for a long time, could only dream of a different life far away from the life she knew growing up.
