This week, we sit down with Jed Conklin — photographer, outdoorsman, and now host of the new series Field to Feast. As more people grow curious about where their food comes from, fewer actually take the step to harvest it themselves. Jed's changing that, one chef at a time. Send us a text2 brothers, 1 girl, 0 chance we're onboard with this love triangle. In The Summer I Turned Pretty, we follow Isabel "Belly" Conklin, who hasn't had much luck with boys finding her attractive, especially the one boy she's been pining over for forever, Conrad Fisher. That all changes the summer she turns 16, where not only does she catch Conrad's attention, but also the attention of his younger brother, Jeremiah. Add in a third love interest, Cam Cameron, and what follows is a messy summer for Belly where she's navigating her feelings, her newfound attractiveness, and her insecurities. In this episode, we talk about pretty privilege, the damaging effects of the broody guy trope and the depiction of female friendships. Heather clocks Jennie Han's age as a fellow Xennial (she's really not 60, guys), Hannah tells us about the Westermarck effect and we find out Hawa really doesn't read our group chat. We may not be onboard with this brother love triangle but the book gave us a lot to talk about. A month after the opening of this year's Venice Architecture Biennale, we've invited three critics to come on the show to help make sense of what was arguably one of the most content overloaded, and curitorially ambiguous biennales in recent memory.Since its inception in 1980, The Venice architecture biennale has set the tone for global discourse on contemporary design and urbanism, and yet the agenda of this year's exhibition, curated by the MIT professor and recent guest of this podcast, Carlo Ratti, seemed surprisingly muted and anodyne, calling for architects to marshal the quote intelligence of the natural, artificial and collective”Still there are more complex although perhaps unintended themes to the biennale this year, including the emerging relationship between unaccountable technologies and authoritarianism, quantatitve expansion as a proxy for genuine inclusivity, and perhaps most importantly, the exchange of an independent curatorial vision for an apparent new ideal of algorithmically determined experience. What is faith? It is believing in possibilities. If there were no doubt, there would be no need for faith. Faith is temporarily putting our doubts on the shelf and working toward our goals. Faith is trusting help and support will be there for us, even though they're not in view. It is looking at a map and choosing a new destination, getting on the road to go there, and trusting the marks on the map symbolize a real place that we will find. On this episode, Darrell and Ed drive home the fact that we all have within and around us a supernatural power for good. However, it can become power to us only when we recognize it as power. “Believe, just believe!” And, during the second segment, Creative superwoman Lois Conklin makes it clear that all the power is on the side of life with today's reading, “Believe It”. Peymon Mottahedeh - Founder of Freedom Law SchoolPeymon Mottahedeh, an Iranian-born Jewish immigrant, moved to the United States in 1977 and soon after became disillusioned with what he saw as discrepancies between America's ideals and its realities, especially within its financial and governance systems. This prompted him to delve deeper into American law and governance, ultimately leading him to establish the Freedom Law School in 1996, which aims to educate U.S. citizens about tax law and their related obligations. Holding a degree in Business/Marketing from the University of Long Beach, Peymon's earlier professional experiences in the mortgage industry and financial planning gave him unique insights into the financial mechanisms that underpin federal systems. Today, he is a prominent speaker and educator, especially known for his discovery and understanding of the history of the Federal Reserve and the IRS, and he actively promotes a better understanding of tax law through his numerous educational campaigns and seminars, empowering thousands to better understand tax law.Joe Banister:Joe Banister - Former IRS Agent and Tax Reform AdvocateJoe Banister, who began his IRS career in 1993 after earning an accounting degree from San Jose State University and working as a Certified Public Accountant, is now a leading critic of the Federal Income Tax. His transformation from an IRS enforcement officer to whistleblower was sparked by his discovery of systemic issues he perceived within the agency, leading to his resignation in 1999. Since leaving the IRS, Banister has made significant contributions to the public's understanding of the U.S. tax system through his book, "Investigating The Federal Income Tax: A Report To The American People." He remains actively engaged in the debate over tax reform, frequently appearing on radio shows and documentaries to share his insights and advocate for change.DESCRIPTION:Alfredo Luna Jr., a decorated Marine Combat Veteran and awarded the Law Enforcement Medal of Valor and survived 4 shootings as a cop. In this episode, Todd Conklin delves into the unique challenges faced by those in the safety profession, where success often lies in preventing measurable incidents from occurring. Reflecting on his experiences in Colombia, he emphasizes the moral duty and imperative of ensuring workers have the environment and support they need to succeed amidst complexity and change. Conklin argues that although the results of effective safety measures may be "nothing happened," this absence of incidents is indeed a powerful indicator of success. He advocates for a shift from focusing on statistical achievements to recognizing and valuing the quieter, immeasurable successes that occur when standard operations proceed safely and smoothly. This episode encourages listeners to appreciate the significance of their roles in maintaining safety and to educate leaders about the importance of outcomes that are not easily quantified, urging the community to take pride in the unseen impacts of their work.
