Welcome to Season 5 of Education Empowered! Kicking off the new season, we are joined by Chris Lowery and Jordan Skeen. Chris is the Senior Vice President of Workforce, Careers and Adult Strategy, at Ivy Tech Community College. And Jordan is an academic coach at Central New Mexico Community College. Both Chris and Jordan have a passion for helping students achieve their highest potential and the best, most-rewarding careers possible. Today, they share how they do just that at their respective schools.Looking outside of normal channels, and finding ways to stay connected with their students and communities were critical for their organizations to stay strong in the last year. Imagine a bridge spanning a river, with all of the structural elements—including the cables, deck, and piers—working in concert to provide sturdy support. Metaphorically speaking, at one end of the bridge you can find relief—food, shelter, safety, daycare, healthcare and other needs; crossing the bridge you find opportunity through training and education that provide pathways from jobs to better jobs and careers; and on the other side of the bridge is transformation, with meaningful employment supporting social and economic mobility. The bridge can only stand and be truly sturdy for people in their journey if all three elements are working in concert – relief, opportunity, and transformation…or, community- and faith-based organizations, Ivy Tech, and employers. Associate Head Coach Chris Lowery sits down with us for a great interview on the climate of college basketball. Growing up in Evansville, Indiana we talked about him being inducted into his High School Hall of Fame while playing with two other NBA players and one NFL player during that era. Coach went on to have a great career at Southern Illinois for long-time Salukis' head coach Rich Herrin and quickly made the transition to coaching soon after. Coach spent one season at SE Missouri State before joining Bruce Weber's staff at alma mater SIU in 2001. He stayed with Weber for three seasons, including Weber's first as the head coach at Illinois, before returning to Carbondale in 2004 as SIU's new head coach.Won 145 games in eight seasons as SIU head coach, going to three straight NCAA Tournaments to start his tenure which included a trip to the Sweet Sixteen in 2007.Twice named MVC Coach of the Year and won2 league titles and the 2006 MVC Tournament. To bring things full cirlce Coach Lowery was hired to rejoin Bruce Weber, this time as the Associate Head Coach at Kansas State. What a great career for a great man. Chris Lowery is the senior vice president for workforce alignment for Ivy Tech Community College. Prior to this role, Chris served as Chancellor for the Columbus/Southeast Region of Ivy Tech. Over the course of his career, he has worked for Hillenbrand, Inc., the Association of Indiana Counties, and was an aide to former Indiana Governor Robert D. Orr and Senator Dan Quayle. Chris chairs the Career Coaching and Navigation Action Team for Governor Eric Holcomb’s Workforce Cabinet and is Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Sagamore Institute think tank. He received his master’s degree in management from Indiana Wesleyan University and a bachelor’s degree in public affairs from Indiana University.
