Margaret Hillenbrand's On the Edge: Feeling Precarious in China (Columbia UP, 2023) examines the negative cultural forms that have emerged in response to China's exclusionary contemporary socioeconomic system. Hillenbrand considers the social strain exerted on members of the “underclass,” the 300 million migrant workers whose toil has underwritten China's economic rise since the passing of the command economy. She describes the socio-legal condition of disenfranchisement, an internal displacement or “civic-half life” experienced by marginalized workers, as “zombie citizenship,” a purposefully inflammatory definition that evokes both the workers' experience of civic suspension and their class others' fears of falling into similar abjection. In this compelling narrative, contemporary Chinese social, legal, and cultural life is wrapped in an ambient mood of jeopardy.  Through close readings of diverse texts, performances, and films that both amplify and diffuse the violent conflicts of dispossession and dislocation, she makes the case for culture's capacity to “intervene palpably in social experience.” The cultural forms Hillenbrand introduces and analyzes themselves teeter on the edge, on one hand, the edge of exploitation and aesthetic empowerment. The ugly feelings these works evoke affectively concretize the “ever-impending dissolution of that apparent boundary” between those already on the cliff's edge and those who may yet come to share this precarious space. I look forward to probing the complexities of this freighted and violent cultural work with our guest. It's amazing that art historians like Robert Hillenbrand got to study the “Great Mongol Shahnama” at all. 500 pages of Firahdosi's epic poem, with 300 illustrations, in a manuscript whose leaves are as wide as an ordinary person's arms. Never completed, never bound, smuggled out of Iran by corrupt dignitaries, and separated and padded out by an unsavory Belgian art dealer. Robert Hillenbrand's work collects all these disparate illustrations and puts them together in one book, which puts “The Great Mongol Shahnama” back at the center of a sprawling 14th-century Mongol empire. Robert Hillenbrand is an honorary professorial fellow in the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Edinburgh. In this interview, Robert and I talk about the Shahnama—and what makes the “Great Mongol Shahnama” unique—and how the Mongol empire gave this masterpiece's illustrations recognizable Western and Chinese influences. I can't trust you because you want something from me. You have to want something from me… But what I discovered when I pulled back those layers of the onion, the only reason why I couldn't trust other people is I couldn't trust myself." "People are struggling and stuck in a status quo because they don't do anything. Like it's, if you just do this and do this and do this, you're guaranteed success… It's just doing the little things every single day and creating resilience and belief in who you are and stirring up that hunger to keep you going through those days to where you wanna give up."  "We use excuses at our current situation to keep us where we are right now. Momentum is the key to life. The hardest part of momentum is getting started. The reason why people don't start is excuses and their current situation."  "Your excuses are valid. Those are your excuses… But even though you have those, you still have to take the action. You still have to go."  "You have to be able to hit the curve ball. You have to be able to pivot what makes you unique." "The only way you'll find abnormality, the only way you'll be unique is discovering who you are at the core."  "So many of us can't just show the world who we truly are in fear of people thinking you're weak." "How do you know what you want if you don't know who you are?" "If you wanna create wealth, do something you're passionate about." "Each one of us has been given a voice … God doesn't reveal that to us. But it's our responsibility to keep training and keep growing and keep doing, not to compete, but to speak." They don't require ability. They require commitment. They require dedication. They require sweat and tears and blood." "You have to put the work in. You have to do it. You have to allow yourself to fail. You have to allow yourself to jump outside your comfort zone. You have to allow yourself to go out there and do it over and over again because you have to create resilience through the process." "What do 97% of people do? They give up. They allow that failure to conform, to define who they are, rather than refine who they are."  "Playing minor league baseball is extremely difficult. But I didn't give up… So when everybody said it was too hot, they were tired… I never gave myself that opportunity, that option. I trained that mindset, that MLB mindset to go out there and persevere and do it and pivot all the way to the top."  "Life is about momentum. We could argue and discuss politics, COVID, and religion, but life is about momentum. And once you get into momentum, stacking little wins on top of each other, what's gonna happen is you will get rewarded." "The most important conversation you ever have in your life is the conversation you have with yourself, not anybody else." "The biggest thing that you could do for yourself is fill up yourself first, work on yourself, your personal pillars… Then your private pillar, that's your interpersonal relationships and people close around you, your family, your parents, your spouse, your kids. When you do that, your professional life will explode to a level that you didn't even think imaginable." In a Special Bonus Mini-sode, host Susan Guthrie is joined by returning guest Molly Dare Hillenbrand, the dynamic founder of HillenBRAND Media and the host of "On Air with Molly Dare."  They discuss Molly's recent viral TikTok post with well over 1.5 million views that caused a media sensation nationwide with features in the New York Post and on NewsNationLive among others! In a post captioned "Dating in Your 40s be like . . . " that must be seen to be believed (click here to watch!) Molly used a audio thread from a voicemail from "Dimitri" to highlight the sometimes treacherous waters of dating for women.  Although Molly's TikTok videos are always popular (follow her at @mollydareofficial) this one went almost instantly viral with more than 1.5 million views and over 17,000 comments.   While many of the comments were supportive and commiserated with the sometimes "narcissistic" dating pool out there, there was also a flood of misogynistic backlash and vitriol.  Molly has since posted more videos in response and shares some of the lessons learned along the way so tune in and check this one out - you won't believe your ears!  Trust us, if you are in a relationship, after listening to this episode, you will turn to your partner and say "thank you!" On today's episode Anthony Casablanca shares the importance of understanding the emotional side of change and how to lead your team through times of uncertainty. Listen in as Deborah and Anthony discuss the impact of change on a team, creating a communication strategy to navigate change, understanding the role of grief at work, and how to address emotions before they impact performance. Anthony Casablanca is an accomplished senior executive, having spent thirty-one years in various leadership roles. Anthony earned his undergraduate degree from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and a master's degree from Kettering University (formerly GMI). Anthony spent most of his leadership career working for Batesville Casket Company, a recognized leader in the funeral service industry. There he served as the vice president of human resources and then the vice president of manufacturing and logistics. Anthony is a former Human Resource Executive of the Year in the State of Indiana. Anthony would go on to become the president of another subsidiary of the Hillenbrand family of companies. Anthony spent his entire career studying the art of leadership with an emphasis on purpose-driven leadership principles. Anthony has spoken at various industry conventions, was a featured speaker at an international sales, service, and operations meeting for Batesville Casket Company, and has led cultural transformations and conducted leadership training classes helping leaders prepare for and navigate change. These experiences also taught him the very real and emotional impact change has on people. After retiring from Hillenbrand Inc., Anthony began consulting to help organizations and leaders discover their true purpose. In 2019, Anthony and his brother Guy, a dually licensed funeral director, co-authored “The Dying Art of Leadership” and launched their leadership training company, GriefLeadersTM to help organizations Change How Change is Implemented.
