Abby Cleckner is back to host this episode with your regular host as today's guest, and we'll be taking a captivating journey into early church history. Together, Craig and Abby shed light on the core beliefs of the early church, the lives, and works of key figures like Polycarp, Origen, and Tertullian, and the awe-inspiring resilience they displayed in the face of adversity. Join us as we delve into Tertullian's unconventional views on the role of the church and the state, and how his words resonate with Jesus' teachings about the Gentiles. Discover why Tertullian ultimately left the church, and how his perspective on the church-state relationship in his time pushes us to question the present-day status quo. You won't want to miss this stimulating discussion! Lastly, we'll compare the approaches of early church fathers like Polycarp, Origen, and Tertullian in handling the persecution of Christianity by the Roman Empire. Uncover the radical pacifism that set the early church apart and how their commitment to nonviolent resistance transformed the world. We'll also dig into their views on religious freedom, rooted in the belief that it was a gift from God, not the state. Don't miss out on this exploration of the early church's incredible legacy and its enduring relevance to our lives today. Are you going through a load of challenges and difficulties? Maybe it is a problematic relationship, disagreements, loss of a loved one, disappointment and disillusionment. When you're going through various life ups and downs.... where do you turn? Hear how James gives us insight on how to face the trials.
Three brilliant minds join us on this episode to talk about what made them decide Christian universalism makes the most sense compared to other theologies. They share their personal stories as well as Scriptures to explain why Hell cannot exist, everyone will be together with Jesus in the end, and what that means for our current life here on Earth. These three are Abby Cleckner, Scott Goldman, and Aree Spivey from Failed Kingdoms – the artist of our intro song. Find him on YouTube and Kindle Vella, among other platforms. God is love. God is just. God is infinitely merciful. God is not willing that any should perish. So, why do most Christians balk at the idea that God doesn't send people to eternal punishment or obliterate them after death? We've been trained in what the correct answers are and never to question what the pastor says. But have you ever even truly thought it through for yourself? In this episode, Craig and his better podcast half, Abby Cleckner, are joined by Peter Rollo, founder of the website and blog project Rival Nations. Pete shares the history of Rival Nations, why he started it, why he was anonymous for so long, and where the project is headed. If you've ever questioned if the world of politics, on any side, be it liberal, conservative, anarchist, or libertarian always seems prone to the ways of this world, to violence. This episode looks at why that is, and why we, as Christians are called to a different kingdom, and we must continue to abide by the ways of that Kingdom, the one Jesus showed us, rather than pursue earthly powers. Too often we find Christians falling into the fallacy that, if we just get more Christians elected into office things will change, and God's will can be implemented, with the right leaders, but this is the illusion we see Jesus reject time and time again in the Bible. How do we get to this conclusion? By looking at what Jesus has to teach us. In the second half of the episode, Pete breaks down his article, Christians Can't Be in Government, to show us exactly who is at the forefront of political power (hint: it is not God!). We see Israel fall when it turns to earthly Kings, and we see Jesus reject the role of Messiah, in an effort to show us God's way, not Man's. Rival Nations is a digital archive of Pete's theological journey, and it all started with seeing Jesus as a political force, not in his pursuit of political power, but, rather, in his rejection of it. In this episode, Craig is joined by (sometimes) co-host Abby Cleckner for a conversation with fellow podcasters, Nathan Chavoya and his co-host Tony, to talk about the power of memes, their podcast Reality Czars, and, of course, Jesus. We covered a wide variety of topics in this episode, from why we use memes to Amish communities and the pros and cons of Trump supporters. As always, it comes back to the question of: What Would Jesus Do? Whether we're considering people who don't want to listen, Canadian truckers, Ukraine and Russia, the Mexican border, war and Christianity, the indoctrination of the church, or conservative Amish communities – in everything, we must follow the example of Jesus. Nathan is the social media manager for the Bad Roman project. He makes a lot of the memes you see on our page. Keith Giles was once a pastor, but then he met Jesus. Now, he's a theologian spreading the Gospel of love through several podcasts, including Heretic Happy Hour, Second Cup with Keith, and Threads, as well as numerous blog posts, and many books. In this episode of the Bad Roman podcast, Craig is once again joined by our beloved contributor, and Keith Giles fan, Abby Cleckner for a deep dive into the question that titles one of his articles, “What if Jesus isn't Coming Back”? The Church's Christianity isn't very Christ-like. The way Christians behave is often influenced by their beliefs about the end of time. Keith joins us to talk through a blog post he wrote about the second coming of Christ, which led him to later pen the book called Jesus Unexpected. Jesus never intended for us to live in fear or anxiety, isn't it time we start acting like Christians again, let's turn the world on its head and be a force of love, peace, and joy once more. In this episode, we are joined by long-time Bad Roman contributor, Abby Cleckner, to discuss her article from July 2020, Never Follow Orders. We are all capable of horrible things. With this knowledge in mind, It is important that each of us take responsibility for our actions, consider carefully why we are doing what we do, and don't blame those in authority over us for our actions. Studies have proven that the majority of people will do anything, even harm another person, if someone in authority demands or instructs them to. Understanding that we are all susceptible to committing atrocities if we find ourselves in positions of power or under the command of those with power, enables us to be honest about the consequences of allowing individuals and organizations to acquire too much of it. When we deny that we are capable of doing horrible things, we erroneously begin to respect the authority of another person more than that of God's or our own values. Abby Cleckner has contributed several articles to our blog and is now co-host for The Bad Roman Podcast! This episode was recorded before she accepted that position. Most people wouldn't include the ideas of pacifism in the same thought as contemplating gun rights, except possibly to concur that those things are opposing ideas on the spectrum of peace. Abby Cleckner does an excellent job of explaining how the two can naturally coexist in the same paradigm. In this episode, Craig tackles this topic, as well as digging into what defines a human right. The term “right” is tossed around a lot in today's society, but what truly is a human right? And how can someone who advocates for peace and complete pacifism also advocate for the right to own a gun? Can the same Jesus who says “blessed are the peacemakers”, and commands us to turn the other cheek and to love our neighbor, be the same God who created us with the right to own a weapon that has the ability to bring to fruition the opposite of all those things? Abby addresses this along with other related topics in this episode. For show notes and to learn more about this week's guests please visit thebadroman.com/episodes

Today we were blessed by Guest Speaker Steve Cleckner. He shares today on an Unexpected Encounter, reminding us that "Jesus loves us in the middle of our mess."
In this episode Craig is joined by Keith Giles, author of Jesus Untangled, and our contributor Abby Cleckner. The conversation centers on Keith's book and his entire Jeus-un series. Keith helps us reframe our perspective of Christianity from that of worshipping a book about Jesus to moving into a growing and personal relationship with Christ Himself, or what Keith refers to as being Jesus-centered instead of Bible-centric. Jesus is who we have been called to follow out of fear and into love— not the state, not the pastor, but Jesus. When I think of an army sniper, I usually think of Bob Lee Swagger, tough, gritty, All-American and not giving a crap. But I was surprised when I spoke with guest that he not only was a sniper, but a lawyer, professor, writer and app developer. Ryan Cleckner is an US Army Ranger Sniper and served two combat deployments in Afghanistan. Once he left the Army, Ryan took a different route and went to law school. Along the way he also worked for the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and Remington Outdoor Company. Ryan also started teaching Constitutional Law at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Ryan is an author who not only writes articles online but he published two books: The Long Range Shooting Handbook and There’s Only One You, which is a gun safety book for children. Both are very successful. Finally, Ryan has a significant online presence with his Mayday Safety app which is meant to get your list of people to know when your in trouble and Rocket FFL, which is an online training course to get your Federal Firearms License. With his little bit of free time Ryan also produces two podcasts. Welcome to Gun Funny, Episode 53. Today we’re going to chat with Ryan Cleckner, make a prank call about which fruit is best for training, and talk about 224 Valkyrie.
Ryan and Jason are back on a schedule! The Cleckner boys talk about S&W's newest product, the new NSSF videos rolling out with the first one being a 22 minute one-take continuous shot of Ryan setting up a rifle, and they answer some live listener questions.
The Cleckner boys talk about Jason's new rifle project and venture into the cerakote world and then they drift off into story time. Ryan talks about being "Koalafied" and gives a military example of what the Range motto "If you're not cheating you're not trying, and if you get caught cheating, you're not trying hard enough." means. He shares his learned strategy for succeeding in the "stalking" exercises in special operations sniper school (SOTIC). Jason and Ryan then dive into Boy Scouts vs. Cleckner Boy experience to include how they thought Jason's brother and Ryan's cousin was going to die from a "bear" attack and how Jason's dad dealt with him...in a tree. If you're one of the listeners asking for more stories - here you go. :)
Ryan and Jason catch up from missing last week. Jason gathered dope on his rifles to 850, Ryan shot some more videos with the NSSF, and the Cleckner boys discuss Jason's progress, answer questions (as many as they can) and discuss the many "Rocket" businesses.
Jason's back and the Cleckner boy discuss the horrible tragedy in Las Vegas and talk about some emergency mindset concepts such as making ANY decision now instead of the best decision too late and how defensive training should be focused on as much as offensive training.
Jason FINALLY gets Ryan to talk about the Canadian sniper record shot, the Cleckner boys discuss Jason's latest experiences in the precision bolt-gun world, and a few projects are teased and discussed.
In this podcast, Ryan discusses the update on Jason's precision AR-15 rifle build and he announces the winner (on price, at least) of his and Jason's "El-Cheapo" AR-15 build. Spoiler alert: one of the Cleckner boys built the AR-15 for under $400! Ryan also talks about some of his preferences for eye and ear protection and answers listener submitted questions concerning how to paint rifles and bipod and bag selection. In this episode, Jason shares a story about how he almost killed Ryan as a kid and Ryan and Jason revisit some of the topics already explored in previous podcasts - spin drift and 1st vs 2nd focal plane scopes. The Cleckners then explore what headspace is, how it is measured, and the implications of incorrect headspace and then they dive into proper trigger control. They both share their techniques and ideas on what good trigger control is and there's a good bit of discussion about dry firing for good feedback on trigger control. Last, they answer a question relating to a topic from last podcast about whether a shooter could reload .30-06 Sprg to be more forgiving instead of converting a rifle into a long-action 308 Win and they introduce an idea for a project and a series of future podcasts - follow along in future episodes as they build an AR-15 and explore the different parts and steps as they go!
For the first time, Jason Cleckner (Ryan's cousin) joins us for the discussion. Jason is an avid outdoorsman and hunter (he is a Cleckner, after all) but he is just getting started in the world of long range precision shooting. By having Jason join us, we hope to have a break from Ryan talking the entire time and also have a buffer where Jason may ask the questions that your thinking as we explore each episode's topics. Please give us feedback on the format. In this episode we discuss whether you should customize and/or convert an old hunting rifle into a precision target rifle or whether you should sell the old rifle and start new. While discussing this, Jason and Ryan explore the pros and cons of different barrel mounting systems and their costs. The Cleckner boys also discuss what spin drift is and briefly how to compensate for it. A deeper discussion will be had in future episodes. After the podcast, Jason and I discussed these sights some more and we talked about the gradual shift left that can be seen in the picture below. During the podcast, I called it a curve which threw him (and possible you too) off - he has confirmed that the rifle he was looking at (1895 Mauser) also has the slight shift left.
Paul Cleckner speaks on the topic "What I Wish I Knew When I Was 30."
