In this episode, Stephen and Mark visit "The Bright Sword" by Lev Grossman. One of our favorite authors, we are so excited to read his latest novel about Camelot after Arthur's final battle and all that was left undone and unfinished. For such a story, it's only appropriate that the boys continue their journey of the 2XO Bourbon label with the French Oak expression.

You can't help but notice that when Jesus chose a group of disciples to change the world, He did not choose a bunch of “Super Heroes”. He chose a motley, common, ordinary, self-centered, and very human group of men to follow Him for three and a half years. He chose ordinary men to do the extraordinary! In Luke 9, Jesus is in the last stage of His three and half years of earthly ministry, especially preparing His disciples for the time He will leave them after His death, resurrection, and ascension. Jesus is sending the twelve on their own (vv. 1-11), He is feeding the multitude (vv. 12-17), He is teaching them about His person, His sacrifice, and His kingdom (vv. 18-36). Now in Luke 9:37-62, Jesus is going to give them some lessons on endurance and perseverance. What is it going to take to keep going as a disciple when the going gets tough! In Luke 9:41, Jesus asked His disciples, "How long shall I stay with you and put up with you?" You might expect that lament to come from an overworked kindergarten teacher, or an impatient army drill instructor, but it was made by the sinless Son of God! We are prone to forget how long-suffering our Lord had to be while He was ministering on earth, especially with His own disciples. When you analyze this section of Luke's Gospel, you can better understand why Jesus spoke those words: (1) He was grieved over the failures of His followers. He had given His Apostles authority over Satan, yet they were too weak to cast out a demon (Luke 9:37-45). (2) In feeding the 5,000, Jesus gave them an example of compassion, yet they persisted in manifesting selfishness and lack of love (Luke 9:46-56). (3) He taught clearly what it meant to follow Him, yet the volunteers turned out to be "me first" disciples (Luke 9:57-62). No wonder He was grieved! Notice how on this occasion the nine disciples lacked the power to cast out a demon in a boy (vv. 37-45). We dare not stay on the glorious mountaintop when there are battles to fight in the valley below. Here was another "only child" needing the help of the Lord (Luke 7:12; 8:42), and even more so because Jesus' own disciples had failed. Remember in verse 1 of this chapter they had been given power and authority over demons, but they did not have success. Why? When you study all three reports of this event in the Gospels (Matthew 17; Mark 9, Luke 9), you discover what was lacking in their lives. First on the list was faith (Matthew 17:19-20); they were part of an unbelieving generation and had lost the confidence that they needed in order to use their power and authority. (Maybe these nine were upset because the Lord didn't take them up the mountain with Him as He did with the three.) Secondly, prayer and fasting were also lacking (Mark 9:29), which indicates that the nine men had allowed their devotional disciplines to erode during their Lord's brief absence. No matter what spiritual gifts we may have, their exercise is never automatic. The devil tried one last throw (a wrestling term in the Greek) over the man's son, but Jesus rebuked the demon and cast him out. The Lord lovingly gave the boy back to his father (see Luke 7:15) and then took the Twelve aside for another lesson about the cross. After all, it was at the cross that Jesus would give Satan that final blow of defeat (John 12:31-32; Col. 2:15). Hebrews 12:1-2 reminds us that if we are to be extraordinary world-changers that will have perseverance and endurance when we face the difficult situations, we must remember the sufferings of Jesus on the cross and keep our focus on Him and His victory! “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us,... looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” God bless!

This week, Mick and Jen are focusing on two stories gripping most women they know: the horrific mass rape case currently going through the French courts (and the astonishing bravery of Gisèle Pélicot), and the brutal murder of Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei. We'd apologise for it being so grim, but it's hardly women's fault, eh? For balance, there's not only one but two slices of good news, a phenomenal feat of athleticism, and an incredible Jean-Michel Jarre impression to enjoy. Learn more about your ad choices. What if what is perceived as a negative thing by some here on earth turned out to be a superpower "out there" in the universe somewhere? Jared N. Michaud has taken that idea and soared with it. Listen in to see how an autistic boy is the long-awaited prophecy in another galaxy! note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Every once in a while, I get to talk to someone who is clearly brilliant. I usually enjoy it, but once in a while it's frustrating (and then I usually use the experience by writing a novella to deal with the frustration). But even more rare, I chat with someone who is both brilliant and capable of not "talking down" to me or too far above me. Some people just have the gift of interacting with everyone on their level. Jared Michaud is definitely one of those rare gems. I had a blast talking with him, got encouraged in my faith, got excited about his Energmatrice6 series, and walked away thinking, "Wow..." It was, a bit I think, how people who chatted with C. S. Lewis probably felt. He had the gift of being able to converse at nearly any level as well. Don't miss out on Jared's podcast, Modern Apocrypha. Jared mentioned a couple of books, and I wanted to list those here: Evolution 2.0 by Perry Marshall--a looking at Darwinism and Intelligent Design in a new light. Ordinary Men by Christopher R Browning--his take is that it's rough but a good read. Brightstar: Energematrice6 – The Epimyth Begins by Jared N. Michaud “Only the void is content to wait in peace.” Brightstar is the beginning of an epic space adventure that introduces readers to Nate, a boy desperate to escape the prison of an ordinary life made unbearable by his autism. When he is unexpectedly transported to another universe, Nate's perceived disability is transformed into a near superpower. In the Aurora Galaxy, where his arrival has been prophesied for thousands of years, Nate finds the weight of expectations difficult to bear. After being greeted by an ancient ally, Nate begins gathering a misfit group of “odds” from every corner of the universe. Nate's odyssey, which starts in the most prestigious school in civilization, will end battling monsters from the darkest imaginations of an ancient, captive Earth. Coping with greater and greater adversity, Nate finds himself confronted by enemies who all seem to be connected in suspicious ways. In the end, Nate must stand before the Lightmaker Himself, who sent Nate to the Aurora Galaxy in the first place. Brightstar is the beginning of a myth in the tradition of authors like C.S. Lewis, written to introduce young people to the most important stories and values of Western Civilization. Rich language and an epic story provide the backdrop for an exciting, yet thoughtful space fantasy. Learn more about Jared on his WEBSITE and follow him on GoodReads. Like to listen on the go? Historian and author Christopher R. Browning joins Tim to talk about his study of the Holocaust and the “Final Solution” in Poland. In this episode, Christopher discusses his book, “Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland” and how a group of otherwise average, everyday men turned into one of Hitler's most prolific killing squads in World War II. This episode was first released January 24, 2022. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/223_-_Ordinary_Men_Making_a_Kill_Squad.mp3 Long before the world heard the term “Holocaust” in connection with the Second World War, and even before the mass killing started, it all began with an atmosphere in Germany that supported the expelling of Jewish people from territories controlled by Hitler's Germany. At some point, instead of expulsion, the movement would turn into the mass executions of millions of Jews in places like Poland. Historian and author Christopher Browning wrote the landmark book on how such horrific events could take place. It's called “Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland.” To set the stage for the larger story of the book, Browning tells us how it began. This passage is part of the opening chapter that book: “Pale and nervous, with choking voice and tears in his eyes, (Major) Trapp visibly fought to control himself as he spoke. The battalion, he said plaintively, had to perform a frightfully unpleasant task. This assignment was not to his liking, indeed it was highly regrettable, but the orders came from the highest authorities. If it would make their task any easier, the men should remember that in Germany the bombs were falling on women and children. He then turned to the matter at hand. The Jews had instigated the American boycott that had damaged Germany, one policeman remembered Trapp saying. There were Jews in the village of Jozefow who were involved with the partisans, he explained according to two others. The battalion had now been ordered to round up these Jews. The male Jews of working age were to be separated and taken to a work camp. The remaining Jews – the women, children, and elderly – were to be shot on the spot by the battalion. Having explained what awaited his men, Trapp then made an extraordinary offer: if any of the older men among them did not feel up to the task that lay before him, he could step out.” These were the major's comments to the battalion of mostly middle-aged men on the morning of July 13, 1942. They weren't Nazis. They weren't even members of the German army. They made up a police battalion of working-class men too old to serve in the army. Those men would round up and shoot 1,500 Jews in that Polish village on that one day. That battalion would eventually kill upwards of 83,000 captives during the war, making it one of the most efficient German killing squads in the war. But as the title of Christopher Browning's book suggests, before the war, he says these were considered Ordinary Men. A deeper dive into Nehemiah's story with a focus on his method of inspiring his followers.
Without looking, how many of the twelve disciples can you name? We may quickly answer with 4 or 5, but struggle as we get further down the list. Dr. John speaks today of Jesus selecting these twelve men to be His apostles. There was nothing outstanding about them, and the potential for internal conflict was great. But when Jesus called, they said, "Yes." Just like you.A Firm Grip on the Gospel: Anyone who has read the four Gospels is struck by how different they are. These accounts focus on the life and death of Jesus, yet they each have a particular theme and emphasis. In this four-week series, Dr. John Neufeld points us to the Gospel of Luke and traces the intent of the only Gentile writer of a New Testament book.
"Angles And Ordinary Men" Back in the late '90s Wendy Lands' debut album Angels and Ordinary Men landed on my desk in the form a package from Canada and I dove right in. Falling somewhere between Beth Orton's Trailer Park and Sade's Stronger Than Pride, the album was a revelation. It was soulful, it was atmospheric, it was melodic, it was rich, and it was filled with musical finesse and jazzy textures that made repeat listens more and more rewarding. So who is Wendy Lands and what in the devil has she been up to since her marvelous debut album? She's going to fill you in far better than I ever could, but let me give you some quick details: In the early '90s the Montreal-born, Toronto-raised Wendy Lands cut her musical teeth doing theatre adn playing in a pop band called Double Dare. Her debut album spawned two top 40 hits and landed her a Juno nomination for Best New Solo artist in 1997. She toured with Jann Arden, grabbed two Canadian Radio Music Award nominations and as a side hustle, she recorded a series of commercial voice overs. Remember that last bit...She moved to LA to be a songwriter, writing numbers with Paul Williams and Melissa Manchester, then moved back to Canada where she released two more fabulous albums Mumble and Altitude. This is a partial list, Wendy is going to fill in the blanks, but her main gig now is being a widely respected voice actor. Is there new music simmering? Of course there is, but I'll defer to her on that one, too. Look, Wendy Lands is wonderful. Her voice is smooth and stunning, her vocal poise is otherworldly and aside from her gifts behind the mic, she's one of the nicest people ever. www.wendylands.com (http://www.wendylands.com) www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alegreenbooks.com) Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
Luke 6:12-16
The Israel-Hamas war has provoked an angry, bitter debate over the meaning of genocide as partisans on both sides of the conflict invoke the memory of the Nazis and the Holocaust. The new Netflix documentary "Ordinary Men" -- based on the 1992 book of the same title by historian Christopher Browning -- may help place this use (or misuse) of history in its proper perspective. "Ordinary Men" confonts us with unsettling questions concerning humans' capacity to inflict cruelty on others. In this episode, historian Thomas Kuehne discusses the psychological aspects of mass murder and the difficulty in drawing comparisons between, for instance, Hamas and the Nazis.
God uses ordinary and dysfunctional people to usher in the Kingdom of God. There is no plan B. The twelve disciples who became apostles were no exception. Today, we meet these men. Today, Jesus turns disciples into apostles. What's the difference? And how do these men impact your life today. Let's find out!
