The Bad Roman Project explores the entanglement of Christians with the State. It was created out of a firm belief that, as Christians, we are supposed to follow Christ—not the state. All Christians are dual citizens, requiring them to choose which allegia
Think you understand taxes, citizenship, and your legal identity? Think again. In this mind-bending episode, Craig sits down with legal researcher and educator Brandon Joe Williams to explore the provocative world of legal loopholes, sovereignty, and tax-free living. From squaring off with the Employment Development Department to establishing foreign trusts, Brandon's personal journey is as unconventional as the legal theories he unpacks. Together, they dive deep into topics like: Why Brandon believes taxation is optional How credit cards might actually be tools for generating currency Whether you're truly a U.S. citizen—or just think you are But don't worry—this isn't all dense legalese. Brandon blends complex ideas with humor, analogies, and pop culture references that make the fringe feel surprisingly accessible. You'll hear wild terms like “fleshy currency manufacturing devices” and come away questioning things you've always taken for granted. Whether you're a legal theory junkie, a freedom-seeker, or simply curious about how deep the legal rabbit hole goes, this episode will challenge your assumptions and expand your perspective on sovereignty, money, and personal power. Disclaimer: This isn't legal advice. It's a radical exploration of alternative viewpoints that sit at the edge of mainstream understanding. Proceed with curiosity—and maybe a healthy dose of skepticism. Ready to rethink the system? Press play and prepare to see the legal world like never before.
What happens when immigration policies clash with Christian values? Craig sits down with Larken Rose to dissect the complexities of immigration, focusing on the criticisms of past and current policies across administrations, what is novel about Trump's border approach, and the inconsistencies in how some Christians approach these issues. The conversation challenges listeners to scrutinize their beliefs and the language surrounding immigration. Key Topics: Demonization of Immigrants Under Trump: Larken Rose highlights how Trump's administration has intensified the demonization of immigrants, creating a category of "undesirables." He draws parallels to historical tyrants who gained power by instilling fear of a common enemy. Libertarian Inconsistencies: The discussion shifts to Dave Smith, a libertarian figure who supports Trump's immigration policies. Larken criticizes libertarians who abandon their principles on immigration, pointing out the hypocrisy in supporting authoritarian measures while claiming to champion individual liberty. Christian Perspectives on Immigration Laws: Christians' support for harsh immigration policies and "Jesus would follow the law" are examined. Do such stances contradict Jesus' teachings? Self-Reflection and Consistency: Larken concludes with a positive note on the power of self-reflection. He suggests that significant positive change could occur if well-intentioned people critically examined their beliefs for inconsistencies, rather than trying to change the minds of those with opposing views. Notable Quotes: "Obama and going back forever the immigration thuggery…it's not at all new. Trump didn't invent that. But what we're seeing a lot more of right now is the demonization of a whole category of people, those ‘illegals'." - Larken Rose "One of the first things where it really dawned on me that maybe I was thinking about this differently is the fact that we're calling a person “illegal” because they crossed a border that was created by corrupt elitist." - Craig Harguess Join Craig and Larken as they navigate these topics, and reflect on liberty, ownership, and the state control and power that can be seized amid public outrage. In the full episode, you'll find a thought-provoking discussion that questions the status quo at the intersection of faith and immigration.
Craig welcomes Claire Staples (The Clarity Podcast) and Sarah Perry (Voluntarism in Action) for a deeply honest conversation about chronic illness, church hurt, and what it really means to follow Jesus. Drawing from their personal experiences in the LDS Church, Claire and Sarah unpack how institutional religion—particularly within Mormonism—can create a culture that sidelines the suffering instead of stepping toward them. The episode doesn't shy away from hard truths: how church systems can often mirror state structures, how chronic illness is misunderstood and neglected, and how church members are sometimes conditioned to fear rather than embrace the suffering. But at its core, this is a conversation about Jesus—how He touched the untouchable, sat with the rejected, and showed us a better way. From the Good Samaritan to the story of Job, this episode is a call back to the Gospel's heart: love God, love your neighbor, and never forget the people Jesus was most drawn to—the overlooked, the hurting, and the left behind. God set us up to learn how to love. So let's do it.
What does it mean to pledge allegiance to Jesus over earthly governments? Craig is joined by Jason Porterfield, author of Fight Like Jesus: How Jesus Waged Peace Throughout Holy Week, to explore the complex relationship between Christianity and the state. They address four topics often considered "too political" but essential for Christians seeking to faithfully follow Jesus's teachings, encouraging believers to examine where their true allegiance lies. Point by point, Craig and Jason discuss: Jesus spoke of the kingdom of God. The Gospels speak of giving one's pistis (allegiance) to Jesus. The New Testament writers declared Jesus, not Caesar, to be Lord. The early church refused to display any national flag. Through personal stories, biblical insights, and looking to early Christian perspectives on political involvement, the pair trace how government influence has shaped the church and consider what that means for believers today. Key Topics that come up in the conversation:

Once trapped in childhood obesity and a 15-year methamphetamine addiction, Elaina has emerged as a living testament to resilience, intentionality, and self-governance. Her story is one of reclaiming bodily autonomy—a core principle for those who reject the systems that seek to control our lives, whether through addiction, consumerism, or coercion. We dive deep into the realities of addiction and recovery, particularly the devastating effects of meth and fentanyl-laced substances. Elaina speaks candidly about the spiritual and psychological battle of addiction, the way it severs personal freedom, and the importance of rebuilding trust with oneself and others. If you believe that true freedom starts with taking responsibility for yourself, this episode is for you.

What if the teachings of Christ were at odds with the political movements some Christians support? In this thought-provoking episode of The Bad Roman Podcast, host Craig Harguess welcomes Stephen Sizer, a retired minister and expert on Christian Zionism, to explore this very question. Together, they unpack the complex history and theological misconceptions surrounding Christian Zionism, a movement that often uncritically backs policies in the Nation State of Israel. Key Topics: Defining Christian Zionism: Discover how this political movement, driven by Christians, predates Jewish Zionism and often contradicts Christ's teachings. Personal Journey: Reverend Sizer shares his transformation from a conservative evangelical to a critic of Christian Zionism, inspired by his deep dive into biblical history and geography. Biblical Interpretation: Challenge the common view of modern Israel as biblical Israel. Sizer argues that scripture defines Israel as a community of faith, not a nation-state. The Good Samaritan Parable: Gain a fresh perspective on this timeless story, emphasizing compassion for all, regardless of identity. Facing Criticism: Learn about the backlash Stephen has faced for his views and how it has only strengthened his resolve to challenge what he sees as the heresy of Christian Zionism. Notable Quotes: "Christian Zionism is a political form of what they see as love for Jewish people, philosemitism. But in reality, it's today a movement that uncritically endorses the worst excesses of the Israeli regime." - Stephen Sizer "The best defense is a good neighbor. But building walls and killing people in the surrounding nations is not the way to win friends. It's not the way to bring peace." - Stephen Sizer "The question is, are you going to stop or not? What if the key to a harmonious society lies in the ancient practices of early Christians? In this captivating episode, Joseph Macolino returns to unravel his vision of voluntary Christian communities, inspired by the communal living described in the Book of Acts. Picture a world where cooperation replaces coercion, and rulers are a thing of the past. Joseph paints a vivid picture: "Imagine a society where bartering goods and services is the norm, and conflicts are resolved through conversation, not force." We journey into the realm of fantasy with Joseph's book series set in Everath, where Marfta Port exemplifies a voluntary community. This fictional world serves as a powerful allegory for how Christians might live peacefully today. Joseph shares, "Through Marfta Port, I wanted to show that a different way of living is possible—one where faith and community go hand in hand." The discussion deepens as Craig and Joseph tackle the nuances of Christian pacifism. They explore the idea that pacifism doesn't equate to passivity. This thought-provoking dialogue challenges listeners to reconsider their views on self-defense and retaliation. But what about the inevitable challenges of community living? Joseph candidly addresses potential pitfalls, such as dealing with bad actors, emphasizing, "Open communication and shared values are crucial to overcoming these hurdles." Is the world turning a blind eye to the plight of Palestinians? Grace Batchoun, a Christian and Co-founder of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, joins Craig for a deeply personal conversation about the ongoing Occupation of the Palestinian people and genocide in Gaza. Grace shares her journey as a Palestinian Christian and highlights the dire situation in Gaza, challenging the narrative of Israel's self-defense. The conversation unpacks the complexities of everyday life brought on by the Israeli Occupation of Palestinians, urging listeners to reconsider their perspectives and recognize the humanity of Palestinians. Are we truly grasping the essence of Revelation, or have we merely relegated its message to the past? In Part 4 of our series "From Eden to Empire," we invite you to see Revelation as a lens for understanding all empires, not just Rome. Discover how its profound teachings can guide Christians in navigating their relationship with worldly powers. We'll reexamine the imagery of beasts and Babylon, often interpreted as symbols of Rome's might, revealing their relevance to any empire marked by oppression and idolatry. What does it mean to bear the mark of the beast? We'll explore this as a symbol of allegiance to earthly powers over God, contrasting it with the divine mark of believers. Plus, we'll dive into the origins of the notorious number 666, uncovering its historical context and broader implications for complicity with imperial power. Revelation's urgent call to "come out of her" challenges us to disengage from the ways of empire, urging believers to live as citizens of God's kingdom. We'll also redefine the concept of the antichrist—not as a singular figure, but as any force opposing Christ's reign. Join us as we unpack these themes, fostering a historically grounded understanding of how Revelation speaks to the intricate dynamics of power and faith. In Part 3 of our series "From Eden to Empire," we unravel the complexities of Romans 13 and its implications for Christians living under governmental authority. Was Paul truly advocating for unwavering obedience to the state, or was his message more nuanced? We explore the context of Paul's letter to the Roman church in the 1st century, revealing that his words were tailored to address specific circumstances rather than offering a blanket endorsement of government power. Our discussion delves into the idea of living peacefully within the empire while maintaining allegiance to Christ as the ultimate authority. We examine the distinction between submission and obedience, highlighting that the Greek term used by Paul suggests a voluntary yielding rather than blind compliance. This episode challenges listeners to consider when submission to earthly authorities aligns—or conflicts—with their commitment to Christ. We also touch on the topic of taxes, suggesting that Paul's references may have been more about local dues and neighborhood authorities than the overarching Roman government. By contrasting the teachings of Romans 12 with the directives in Romans 13, we uncover how embodying the principles of the former can help navigate the challenges posed by the latter. Join us as we dissect these themes, encouraging a deeper understanding of how Christians can faithfully engage with worldly powers while staying true to their spiritual convictions. This episode promises to provoke thought and inspire meaningful reflection on the intersection of faith and governance. In the second installment of our series "From Eden to Empire," we delve into Matt's dissertation with a focus on the teachings of First Peter. Building on the foundation laid in our first episode, which explored the "Deuteronomy 32 Worldview," we now turn our attention to how these themes are expanded in Peter's writings. Peter's teachings challenge us to reconsider the nature of submission—not as mere obedience to human authorities, but as a voluntary act for the sake of Christ. What does it mean to live as exiles and strangers, maintaining a distinct identity from the world's systems and authorities? This episode invites you to explore these questions and more. We also discuss the transformative power of baptism, which Peter presents as a declaration of allegiance to God's kingdom. This act of spiritual warfare signifies a break from worldly systems and a commitment to a higher calling. How does this shape our understanding of spiritual identity and community? Join us as we explore the call for Christians to live as witnesses, leading lives that not only silence critics but also draw others to Christ. Rather than seeking to fix or overthrow worldly systems, Peter's teachings encourage us to embody a different kind of revolution. Tune in for a thought-provoking discussion that deepens your understanding of First Peter and its relevance today. Explore the profound intersection of faith, spiritual governance, and political power with our guest Matt Mouzakis. Matt provides insights from his research, guiding us through a deep examination of Romans 13 using the "Deuteronomy 32 worldview." Together, we reflect on the early Christian perspective of state authority, highlighting the importance of prioritizing Christ over earthly powers. We also delve into the role of spiritual beings like seraphim, cherubim, and angels, and how their actions influence human affairs. The discussion continues with a fresh understanding of God's nature—not as a strict authoritarian but as a collaborative partner in divine governance. Key topics include forbidden knowledge, the significance of the three falls in Genesis, and the portrayal of Satan as more than a singular evil entity. We also unpack Psalm 82, which depicts a divine council and God's judgment, offering a fresh perspective on justice. As we turn to politics, Craig challenges reliance on human governance and argues for a return to Jesus' teachings. This leads to a thought-provoking discussion on how modern political systems clash with the early Christian conviction of having "No king but Christ." Join us as we explore these transformative ideas and reconsider the role of faith in the modern world. Are libertarians really sticking to their principles, or are they just playing the political game? In this episode, we're getting into some tough questions about the Libertarian Party and the choices they've been making lately. Our guest thinks a lot of libertarians are backing people like Donald Trump and Argentina's President Javier Milei just to stay relevant, even if it goes against what libertarianism is all about. We're calling out the hypocrisies within the Libertarian Party and taking a hard look at the policies of some of the big names they've been supporting. Do these people actually stand for libertarian values, or is something else going on? Our guest isn't holding back, especially when it comes to pointing out the harmful stuff Milei, Musk, and Trump have been up to, and how echo chambers are shutting down real debates in libertarian circles. Then, we take the conversation in a whole new direction: Christian anarchism. Should Christians be rejecting the state altogether and following Christ instead of any political figure or party? We get into this radical idea and what it means for both your politics and your faith. And we're not done yet—we also dig into where the money's coming from in libertarian movements. Are libertarian groups losing their way by taking cash from billionaires and big corporations? Our guest thinks this kind of funding could be selling out the very principles these groups are supposed to stand for. Let's question everything together—hit play and join us! Craig welcomes back Mike Maharrey for an engaging discussion on the intersection of Christianity, government, and economics. Ever wondered how inflation and taxation really impact your daily life? Mike breaks it down, tracing the effects of monetary policy from the Great Recession to today. Ever wonder what happens when political figures start getting treated like religious icons? Well, buckle up, because singer-songwriter Josh Nichols is here to chat about just that. We're diving into the unsettling trend of comparing Donald Trump to Jesus, especially when election season heats up on social media. These comparisons aren't just off—they're seriously problematic. Josh's powerful song "God vs MAGA" takes a stand against this dangerous idolization of political figures, shedding light on the toxic rhetoric that equates Trump with Christ. We'll explore how these false comparisons mess with our faith and distract us from the true essence of Jesus' teachings. American nationalism often disguises itself as Christianity, but what's the spiritual fallout? We're breaking down the troubling habit of mixing faith with national pride, and how this can turn patriotism into a form of idolatry. Josh's song "God vs MAGA" calls out the manipulation of religious beliefs by political players, showing how these actions can lead to a misguided faith in political leaders. We also draw some interesting parallels between Trump's portrayal and the biblical figure Barabbas, highlighting the need to find truth amid all the political noise. We'll talk about the clash between personal rights and biblical principles of humility and selflessness, digging into the theological implications and contrasting earthly citizenship with eternal values. Josh's powerful lyrics, including the line "God doesn't want to make America great again," remind us that our loyalty should be to God's kingdom, not a nation. Critical thinking and independent thought are key to navigating the noise of corporate media and political propaganda. We discuss the liberating power of letting go and having faith, and how critical thinking helps us form confident, independent opinions. From addressing the idolatry of political beliefs to calling out the hypocrisy within pro-life stances, this episode urges us to elevate our faith above nationalism and strive for greatness rooted in God's infinite and unconditional love, not a nation's past. We'll wrap up with personal reflections and broader societal critiques, highlighting the tension between national identity and spiritual integrity. Was Jesus crucified for challenging the empire or for atoning for humanity's sins? Joined by Reverend Caleb Lines this episode tackles age-old theological questions through a fresh perspective. Caleb, who hails from a progressive Christian background, shares insights from his compelling sermon, "Jesus was crucified for standing up to empire and not to atone for the sins of humanity." Our conversation digs deep into the historical and political contexts surrounding Jesus' crucifixion, urging listeners to reconsider traditional interpretations. We then move on to dissect the concept of atonement as presented in the New Testament, revealing the contrasting depictions of Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels and John. Does the New Testament present a unified view, or are there significant theological discrepancies? Caleb and Craig challenge the later development of penal substitutionary atonement and bring to light the often-overlooked complexities within the New Testament. This segment is sure to provoke thought and aims to foster a nuanced understanding of Jesus' messages and their implications for Christian faith and practice today. Finally, we broach the subject of progressive Christianity, emphasizing its roots in Jesus' teachings on peace, justice, and inclusivity. Caleb helps us navigate the delicate balance of faith and politics, touching on modern humanitarian crises and the role of pastors in guiding their congregations through these challenges. Joseph Macolino is a masterful storyteller whose love for fantasy began in childhood. Joseph shares the evolution of his fictional universe, Everath, and the tales that populate its thousand-year timeline. Drawing inspiration from literary giants like Tolkien and Orwell, Joseph crafts narratives that resonate deeply with themes of governmental skepticism and the pursuit of a society aligned with the teachings of Christ. His trilogy stands as a testament to the power of fiction in challenging our beliefs and illuminating the path to Christ's kingdom. Throughout our conversation, we thread the needle between fiction and reality, exploring how the characters in Joseph's fantasy series confront the winds of change, transitioning from a structured monarchy to a society where Christian anarchist principles reign supreme. This isn't just about creating another world; it's about challenging the status quo, questioning the reader's long-held beliefs, and presenting a tapestry of upheaval that resonates with both historical and contemporary political movements. The tales shared offer more than escapism - they invite introspection and boldly propose a life governed by faith rather than fear Wrapping up our expedition into Everath, we delve into the lives of characters who are as multidimensional as the world they inhabit. Villains reveal vulnerabilities and heroes grapple with the unforeseen repercussions of their deeds. Through them, we glimpse a society in flux—a monarchy giving way to a republic, and ultimately an anarchist community living out these principles. It's more than just a fantasy series; it's a reflection of libertarian turned anarchist ideology and the perennial quest for a harmonious existence. Join us for this imaginative and thought-provoking episode that's sure to provoke discussion and maybe even inspire a reevaluation of the way we view our world and the powers that govern it. In this special episode of The Bad Roman, we take an atypical yet gripping detour into the sinister world of true crime, religious beliefs, and their troubling convergence. Cristy Ramos, the voice behind the budding podcast Cristy's Chronicles, where she discusses the finer details of real-life crime stories. Having worked in law and health insurance, she has deep knowledge of how the system functions. Cristy offers a fresh perspective on understanding the motivations of criminals and how the government deals with them. In this conversation, we explore both infamous and lesser-known cases like those of Casey Anthony and Israel Keyes. With a past rooted in Christianity, Cristy offers an enlightening perspective on how religious upbringings and interpretations of scripture can intersect with and potentially influence criminal behavior. Even though we're talking about True Crime, this topic helps us, as Bad Romans, understand how the government catches and punishes criminals, and if our justice system is doing a good job. It challenges us to think about what ‘No King But Christ' means when faced with horrendous acts, how do we punish people in a voluntary society? Conversation Highlights: The role religion can have infamous crimes. The trial of Casey Anthony and the unanswered questions. How serial killer Israel Keyes planned his crimes and whether his religious upbringing had any role. The impact of crime on society and how the government responds, like in the case of Memphis. How common people and technology can help solve old mysteries. Fun topics like ghosts, UFOs, and conspiracy theories in our real-life crime chat. Whether we're studying about criminals or pondering over statism, The Bad Roman is always here to help you learn and think differently. Join us for this episode and others as we continue to explore what it means to live as a follower of Jesus in the 21st century, Christians' entanglement with political forces around the world, and the mystery of being alive that intrigues us all. When Casey Perez walked away from the Mormon Church, he didn't just leave behind a congregation; he discovered a tapestry of anarchy and voluntaryism hidden within its teachings. In this profound discussion, we find unexpected solidarity with anarchist thought, as Casey unveils how the Book of Mormon's scriptures and doctrines mirror the principles of societal autonomy and individual freedom. Our exchange traverses religious and ideological frontiers, inviting both Mormons and non-Mormons to embrace the underlying values that bind us together as a global family. The conversation shifts as we contemplate the personal changes spurred by political disillusionment and debates over the constitution, intensified by the pandemic. As we consider the emotional impact of mandates on both individuals and communities, we delve into the debris of societal pressures. In doing so, we discover a widespread desire for a support network and a community that values individual choice, and we explore the role of authority and governance from a perspective of spiritual enlightenment, not political will. Wrapping up, we look beyond the horizon of today's interpretations of LDS texts, questioning traditional views on government, war, and America's place in divine providence. We explore the notion of modern slavery within our own societal structures and discuss the frustrations of many modern Christians with the current state of affairs. We question divine providence in the American founding and probe the implications of the government's hand in modern slavery. Our quest for understanding takes us from the battlefield of American history to the heart of Christian anarchy, culminating in a call to action for the Mormon community to consider the anarchy threaded within their beliefs. Could the intertwining of faith and state authority be warping the very soul of Christianity? Unlock the complexities of Christian nationalism as we sit down for a round table to dissect the idolatrous juxtaposition of faith and governance. This episode dissects the potential hazards of conflating faith with state authority and how this can distort genuine religious practice and the core tenets of Christianity itself. Join your host, Craig Harguess, along with friends of the show Chris Polk, Cody Cook, Paul Parayil, and Darren Freidinger, who help us peel back the layers of entanglement to reveal the true call of Faith. Witness a bold examination of Christian nationalism's historical claims and current implications in the realm of politics and social justice. As echoes of January 6th reverberate through the national consciousness, we scrutinize its portrayal as a Christian nationalist insurrection and the subsequent impact on political landscapes. The breach, the media's narrative, and the political fallout are dissected with a critical lens, contrasting the motives behind these actions with the broader implications for American society. We confront the seductive pull of cultural identity and the struggle to prioritize important global issues over trivial cultural squabbles. Through this dialogue, we strive to foster a deeper understanding of how a desire for a 'Christian nation' impacts both the spiritual body of Christ and our broader societal fabric. With a laid-back yet critical approach, we discuss the importance of curiosity and questioning in religious communities, advocating for meaningful action against social injustices rather than getting lost in cultural distractions. The panel lays out a thought-provoking journey through the contradictions of Christian nationalism, inviting you to reflect, question, and expand your understanding of faith in the public square. The digital age has transformed the battleground of ideas, and we explore the challenges of engaging in meaningful discourse on social media amid generational technology. As we draw to a close, we advocate for deeper awareness and action, urging listeners not to be sidetracked by fleeting controversies but to remain steadfast in the pursuit of no king but Christ. Are we forgetting the rebellious, defiant nature of Jesus? Have we overlooked his active resistance to the political and religious hierarchies of his time, and his challenging calls for us to be good neighbors rather than good citizens? That's what we'll be unpacking in our fascinating conversation with our guest, Domenic Scarcella, author of the book "Good Neighbor, Bad Citizen". Domenic provides an intriguing reading of Jesus' teachings, bringing to light the elements that often get overlooked in contemporary Christianity. We dissect the Stations of the Cross, Jesus's nonviolent resistance, and how to use his book as a tool for contemplation. As we journey through these narratives, we confront the controversial topic of police violence and its relationship to the Christian faith. This episode holds some challenging viewpoints that question the traditional support of law enforcement and military by modern Christians. The non-violent teachings of Jesus and his brutal treatment by the 'good cops' of his day serve as the crux of this discussion. We highlight that violence, be it personal or outsourced, remains a contradiction to the teachings of Jesus, and is thus a sin. We also carve out time to talk about the unfathomable nature of God, and the significance of the Holy Spirit, offering some new food for thought on the intersection of faith and politics. Domenic gives us a glimpse into his new sub-stack, extending an invitation to join the ongoing conversation about Christian ethics. As we round off, we reflect on the essence of community, shared faith, and why being both a good neighbor and a bad citizen, as Jesus was, might just be the unconventional perspective we need today. Tune in for an insightful conversation with Jeffrey Stevens, an independent journalist and director of the Azarius Project, as we take a hard look at the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory and the impact it's having on the Christian and other communities within these borders. Hear firsthand about the misinformation circulating among Christian Americans and learn about Jeffrey's own transformation from being pro-Israel to acknowledging the impossibility of supporting both Israel and the sanctity of life simultaneously. If you're one of us, or you're new here, you should know that there has always been a personal journey at the heart of The Bad Roman Project. It's been one that's demanded a complete overhaul of previous beliefs. A path paved with discomfort while challenging long-held perceptions and demanding an honest reassessment of Christian values. As always, there's so much more to the story than what's on the surface and what's important is that we talk about it. While mainstream media often skews the reality on the ground, our conversation challenges those narratives and scrutinizes the role of the US and Israeli governments in perpetuating the inhumane policies of the occupation. In this uncompromising discourse, we're asking the hard questions, discussing who gets to define terrorism, examining the treatment of Palestinians (both Muslim and Christian), and unlocking the transformative power of relationships to remedy bias in our perspectives. But our journey doesn't stop there. In this episode, we're bringing the focus back home, because change starts on your doorstep. We discuss the importance of evangelizing in our own neighborhoods and fostering a personal relationship with Jesus. Be prepared for a lively debate on what Jesus' stance would be of his birthland today and the recognition that the world is indeed larger than just the United States. Get ready, as we are joined by Jason Bassler founder of The Free Thought Project and Police the Police for a candid conversation about political corruption, digital activism, and the profound impacts and reach of war. Listen in as Jason shares his transition from libertarian to anarchist, spurred by his experiences during the Occupy Wall Street which also helped catalyze his subsequent dedication to police accountability. He offers an intriguing behind-the-scenes look at the Free Thought Project, its evolution, and its unexpected shutdown on major social media platforms in 2012, and its uphill rebuild. We don't shy away from the hard truths in this episode. We scrutinize the alarming effects of war, corruption, and propaganda on our society. This includes a frank discussion on the startling death toll from the post-9/11 war on terror and the profits made by US contractors. We take a deep look at the Ukrainian War as a potential proxy war, the implications of the military-industrial complex, and the ripple effects of these conflicts across different generations. The power of the internet in how different generations are countering these narratives is a key focus. Lastly, we expose the uncomfortable realities about the US' militarism, its lack of accountability for war crimes, and the fleeting anti-war stance when candidates ascend to power (and their subsequent escalation of conflicts once they have that power). From Lockheed Martin's sponsorship of a pride parade to the $2300 expat exit fee from a free country, we lay bare the government's blatant hypocrisy. Jason's reflections on the strength of the internet and the value of criticism as a sign of tough love conclude our conversation on a hopeful note. How would our perspectives shift if we truly understood the power dynamics that govern our world? In a dynamic and insightful discussion, the Bad Roman Project welcomes back Larken Rose to the podcast, as we delve into the thought-provoking themes presented in the Jones Plantation film. Why is it that religious revivals often spark controversy within the very community they aim to uplift? And how can we bridge the chasm between differing interpretations of faith within Christianity? Join host Craig Harguess, as he sits down with theology major and Christian anarchist, Cody Cook, for a thought-provoking conversation on the Asbury revival and the stir it caused among fellow Christians. We delve into the fervor of the event, its resistance among some Christians, and its relation to the Great Awaking and other revivals, examining why Cody and I found ourselves more than okay with this revival. In our discussion, we draw parallels between the Asbury revival and the Great Awakening from the 1740s. We ponder on the nature of revival and what it could mean when God moves amongst a group of people. As we sift through the criticisms and controversies surrounding these revivals, we grapple with the reactions of different Christian sects, questioning the rigid definitions of revival. We unlock insights into why the Asbury revival resonated with so many, and the potential implications it holds for us today. Finally, Cody and Craig put the spotlight on the importance of inclusivity and respect within the Christian community. We challenge our understanding of the Christian faith and the ways to reconcile our differences. We reflect on how we can extend an open invitation to newcomers to the faith without stymieing their spiritual journey. This episode of the Bad Roman Podcast invites you to contemplate faith, revivals, and Christian controversies in a new light. Jared Wall of the Best Practices podcast joins Craig for the series's latest installment, where Craig invites guests with their own podcasts to discuss their projects. Jared's podcast offers listeners interviews on expert ways to own and operate their industrial facilities and commercial properties. While they do discuss the Best Practices podcast, some of the most interesting parts of the conversation are when Jared shares his insights on starting a legal cannabis enterprise and what it is like to be an anarchist and then meeting Jesus in the gospels. Jesus' teachings were so exciting and inspirational that people dropped what they were doing and voluntarily followed him in the thousands; no wonder the Romans killed him. The conversation begins with his journey from Republican to Libertarian Party activist, then to conceptualizing freedom as personal development, entrepreneurship, and earning wealth to become geographically free. It moves on to how he befriended anti-war activist Scott Horton and worked as a researcher on a few of his books. Jared tells about how hard it is to run a business that focuses on cannabis, as even when it is legal, it is difficult to find stable financial institutions that will work with you. Jared talks about looking for a mentor who could teach him to be a better father and unexpectedly arriving at Jesus. Then they finally discuss the Best Practices podcast content and what any would-be listeners can expect from it.
